Mick and John weren't, but whoever was doing the vocals was, in a sense.

So like Steve said, when Lindsey does Oh Well, they become a FM cover band? When they do SYLM or Don't Stop now, IT'S THE SAME THING!!!!!!!

It never ceases to amaze me, the, how the Rumours fans view the band with rose colored glasses.

No, I agree with this. They're covering Peter Green's song and then they're covering Christine's songs.

Fleetwood Mac should be performing Fleetwood Mac songs. No solo songs or songs from other artists/bands.

I think that sometimes we get mixed up on what is a Fleetwood Mac song and what is a Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Peter Green, etc. song.

So, then, the people who back Stevie/Lindsey/Peter/Christine/Welch are just a bunch of cover artists? Stevie Nicks is fronting a Fleetwood Mac cover band when she does a solo show?

As a new member of Fleetwood Mac, performing Fleetwood Mac songs, how would that equate to a cover band?

Even if Christine toured with that line-up, Dave would have had his alotted moments, both for a new Time album song, as well a solo hit. I don' think he expected that the name of band was going to change to Fleetwood Mason.

I used to think that way. especially when Fleetwood Mac started performing Stand Back. I still have issues with that song, only because it's such a self-defining Stevie solo song, and so incongreous with Fleetwood Mac's style.

But I've come around that to see that it's nice when they can incorporate some solo songs. Unfortunately, their choices aren't the best. I think Lindsey's song Trouble would have worked well in a Fleetwood Mac format..(Go Insane was ok, but it was just Lindsey in an acoustic solo, with no band participation.) Also, there are numerous Christine McVie solo songs to choose from that would blend perfectly into a Fleetwood Mac performance. I have to think what solo Stevie song would be appropriate, but it isn't Stand Back.

I always thought it would have been cool if, during the middle of a show, Stevie, Lindsey and Christine, would each do a solo song, with the full band backing each of them.

Exactly. This is why I think it's strange that, according to the article, he felt it was a cover band as it is.

Given most of the fans never accepted this version of FM (I remember the discussions when Time was released and the SN fans really didn't take to Bekka), Dave Mason does have a point. If it wasn't seen as a legitimate lineup or a new Fleetwood Mac, then they were pretty much a cover band or another Elmer Gantry & co.

The fact that Mick and John were there gave the band a bit of credibility but not a lot. If Mick had joined Elmer Gantry, Kirby, etc back in the seventies would that have been enough for them to be the REAL Fleetwood Mac?

Dave's comments about the cover band are probably made in hindsight and from talking to fans over the years. He probably didn't think it was a cover band when he was there.

I think the Time lineup had great potential, especially Bekka & Billy. I'm not a DM fan though...

Apples and oranges between the Fake Mac and Time. The Fake Mac was trying to pass itself off as Fleetwood Mac. The Time band WAS Fleetwood Mac. Big difference. I really don't see much of a difference between the time band and other transitional versions of the band (Future Games, Penguin, the first Stevie/Lindsey album). The only difference was the scale.

Can we, with a straight face, say that the Time band was MORE radical than when the band went from being Green/Spencer/Kirwan to Kirwan/Welch/McVie in just over a year?

+10, Steve.

These people that can only see FM as the rumours incarnation, are the epitome of being myopic. Mason/Bramlett is NO different that Welch/Weston. Only the latter duo didn't have to follow the death knell couple of FM creativity.

I'm not saying it was right, just that I do see where Dave is coming from. The other difference was that the Rumours lineup was one of the biggest bands ever, and no amount of personnel changes would ever get that back.

I guess it would be like the Christian churches stopping preaching about Jesus and now preaching about a short fat guy called Frank.

That's the way I feel, too. Back in '93/94, I'm sure he took it seriously and put a full 100% into the new Fleetwood Mac. However without the proper backing of management/record label, there is only so much FM could have done.

After 15 years, one's opinion on something will most likely change so I don't fault/blame Mason for his "cover band" response. Plus look at what happened afterwards i.e Christine, Lindsey, Stevie riding in on their white horses to "save" Fleetwood Mac.

Don't forget the Dance reunion was just a year or so after the Time era.
