A week ago I made an impulse purchase of a pair of Skechers Shape Ups sandals. I know, I know... they're beyond fugly. Perhaps the ugliest shoes ever made. But I was quite taken aback when I tried them on for the first time. They fit perfectly and they had this irresistable spongey/springy feeling about them with each step. But the best part? I was instantly two inches taller. Sold! I assumed any presumed fitness benefit was total bullshirt and a gimmick. Other than the fact that they were extremely comfortable and put a spring in my step, they seemed just like any other shoes to me.

I wore them a couple of times that following week to run errands- short jaunts. Everything was hunky dory. However, this past weekend, I went on a more extended excursion wearing these shoes and attended a garden party with no seating whatsoever; I stood the whole time (admittedly I would normally never wear such ugly shoes to a party, but it was outdoors in the blazing heat). On Sunday morning every joint in my body was singing out in pain- not an entirely unpleasant pain mind you, but the kind you get when you have worked out hard. My knees, my a$$, my back, my shoulders... I was initially wondering whether I was coming down with the flu, but I had no symptoms other than the overall body pain. Then I figured, oh well, this is what happens when you get old. But then it finally occurred to me that it could possibly be from those freakin' shoes, even though I never really felt that different wearing them. I googled around for an answer, but there is so much conflicting information out there. Some people developed joint pain, others experienced relieved pain.

Does anyone else have any Skechers Shape Ups anecdotes to share?

I've genuinely been thinking about getting something like this for when I walk the dog. We go on quite long walks so I want to know if they'll make my legs and butt look a little tighter. I'm no fitness freak but I'd like the top of my legs that little bit more toned. My posture would probably thank me, too.

Well, I bought the Sketcher Shape up sneakers. I have only worn them while working out and notice it feels a bit more challenging. I plan on wearing them as we hike in Colorado next week. Will let you know!

You know I value your input on this crap Ed I definitely won't let my decision with England change because of him, but he is, hands down, the most genuinely kind person I've ever dated. I'm surprisingly taking this all in stride so we'll see how it goes!

Do not! I believe these monstrosities are supposed to be worn only on level surfaces. You need something that gives you sure footing.

The first time I wore them, it seriously hurt to walk down the stairs for the next two days. I was fine walking flat, but as soon as it came to walking down the stairs, it hurt like hell and my quads felt like jello!

Heart

(Warning - "Harry Potter spoiler" below!)

I'd just like to share that a greater love hath NO man than he that layeth down
his life for the son of a woman who wouldn't even give him the time of day.

Except maybe an actor who rips out his own heart and shows it to the entire world
while it's still beating. . . . .

Just a thought, Miss Dennis: There's 3.5 BILLION guys in the world.
Kindness occurs in greater abundance than you might think.
It should be a GIVEN that he's kind if he's dating you.
Don't sell yourself short, some guys would DIE to be with you;
and some of those live in England and cast some pretty fancy spells,
themselves.

You like Harry Potter, so just to make an analogy with my post above -
I'm not sure who's the bigger fool, Severus Snape or Lily Potter. Her husband
was an ASSHOLE, at least when he was young. I'm not saying the ex is - - -
but look at what she missed out on. And you KNOW that Rowling "knows of what she speaks" -
seriously, listen to Alan Rickman's performance, that was as REAL as it gets. Whoever she is, she's
KILLING herself that she didn't give him a chance - but now it's too late.
Trust me, it happens every day.
And Dannie, NO ONE cares that she's kicking herself or is concerned about "what might have been."
She's just some old chick on line at the supermarket or snoring away in front of her tv.
Seriously, think about what Rowling said - I've seen this happen so many times in real life -
both women and men missing opportunities 'cause they think they have the best deal they're gonna get.
He was willing to DIE for her and she wouldn't even give him the time of day.
That's true of Severus Snape in the story, too. . . . .

that's never wrong. i pretty much experience life through a filter of 30 rock quotes.

on the topic of shark week, i stopped watching years ago because even though it claims to spread education and understanding of the misunderstood shark, every single show is about horrific shark encounters. no thanks.

Wait, what? Atrocious footwear is already taking up too much real estate in my suitcase. I need the Sketchers for the fitness room and now my old Timberlands for hiking?

The important thing is that you went somewhere for the help. You are a strong person. Checking yourself into the facility proves that. It won't be easy, but it's important that you are somewhere that can help you through it.

You are wise, Carrie721. Like a genetically modified shark.
