Yeah, that one has always bothered me, too.

I also can't stand: "I'm fixing to...." (Southern thing)

Online, I hate to see "huzzah!"- that drives me insane!

And "kudos to you..."

Gah.

When men say "The Wife"
Women "My old Man"

My boss does not know the correct use of come/came. He will say things like "The wife come over yesterday, we worked in the yard and got 'r' done."

The one I cannot stand is "blah, blah, blah." My sister-in-law, who I love dearly and is one of my best friends, says it ALL the time. Every single time she tells me a story about something she uses "blah, blah, blah," at some point. And as soon as she says it, it totally distracts me from the story because I hate it so much!

"Guesstimate" GOD, it's like nails on the chalkboard! I HATE that "word" so much I can't even explain. And, I agree with so many that people have already mentioned. Could/would/should "of" -- read you're freakin' 6th grade English grammar books, please! And when people say "ideal" when "idea" is the correct word and they think by adding the "l" it sounds sophisticated. No, it makes you sound like a dumbass because you have no clue what the hell you're talking about.

I'm sure as the late night drags on I will think of some more that grate on me!

Oh, here's some more. When people don't know the difference between your and you're...similar to its and it's. And good vs. well...Oh, and two/to/too. Is it really THAT hard to sort those out? I think it's laziness more than anything. Just take a second and think about what you're about to say/write, and you will save yourself from looking like a total ass.

Sorry to sound like a complete asshole. I just take a lot of time/pride when I write, and it kills me to no end when people destroy the English language.

Just thought of another one which I see so much it's ridiculous. "Loose" Like, "I hope I don't 'loose' all my money in Vegas." It's "lose." I've seen so many "educated" people do that, and I hate it. It might be one of the most common spelling errors I've run across.

ooohhh.... I just thought of something that IRRITATES ME TO NO END: When people have a rash, bug bite, etc. and talk about "itching" it.

Look people, get a friggin' dictionary already. You don't ITCH an itch. You SCRATCH it.

Arrgh! I hate that too. "I was itching my rash all night, Doc, and I don't know what to do about it." I would love to see how one goes about "itching" themself!

Gotta run to get some food...I'm sure I'll be back with many more phrases to raise the hair on the backs of your neck!

Brad,
Not to sound like a b***h (or my mom, who always corrected my English), but your post gave me a good laugh, because you mentioned people who don't know the difference between your and you're. Reread your first paragraph. Should be "read YOUR freakin' 6th grade..."

I'm sorry. I just had to point that out!! Too funny!
