If I'm not mistaken, I don't think there has been a "vault" song (i.e., from the 1970s - 1980s) on a Stevie album in 20 years that hadn't already circulated in demo form previously (I don't count "Reconsider Me" since she did not write it). I would be surprised if there is anything written from that time period that we haven't already heard. For some reason I suspect that the vault isn't as deep as we'd like to think it is.

And If I'm not mistaken the only Stevie albums that do not contain vault songs are Rock A Little and OSOTM. Though there is speculation that Stevie wrote RAL before Bella Donna - but I'm not sure. I remember reading an interview after Wild Heart was released that August that she was going to call her next record RAL, and she had just written the song. That's why I am skeptical about her ever naming her 3rd album Mirror, Mirror I know it's shocking to the fan community to say that aloud. But all references in any Stevie interview or published music rag from 83' til it's release in 85' had Stevie's 3rd solo album titled RAL. I think a Stevie Nicks fanzine may have gotten the wrong impression when Ginny K. reported that Stevie recorded a song titled MM, and maybe for a split second they may have even considered it. But I aways go back to that August 83 newpaper article where Stevie named her next record Rock A Little, I remember vividly cause I though it was an odd non-Stevie sounding title. Oh just remembered "I Sing For The Things" could very well be a vault song. So that leaves OSOTM as the only album never to look towards the blue crystal vault. And I don't consider Juliet or WLT vault songs as they were both written after RAL was released.

It was also published in the random notes section of RS summer of 84' that Bruce Springsteen contributed "Don't Lose Heart" (as in BS demo "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart" ) but was not confirmed if it would be included. Jimmy was really going to town soliciting songwriters for material for Nicks' 3rd album. He hit up Zevon, Springsteen, D. Stewart, Bernie Taupin/Martin Page ("These Dreams") & rumored co-writer Mark Knofler (She Still Loves Him). He must have had reasons to be concerned that Stevie was not only having major writers block but decending into drug-adled delusions of grandeur. Being that only 3 self penned Nicks songs were unveiled upon RAL's arrival. I'd say it must have been true. If we could only get a great un-authorized Biography of Stevie one day.

"I Sing For The Things" was most definitely a vault song by the time RAL came round to be recorded. If you listen to the earliest of piano demos for it, you'll notice Stevie still has Rumours/Tusk high pitched voice.

The piano demo of "I Sing For The Things", the earliest known version, is Late 1981 (on the Masters Reel). Stevie & Ginny both have said "Rock A Little" was written in the Summer of 1981.

It seemed she had no name
She sat alone, and it seemed to him
That the light and the face were the same

Her hair shone, streamed blond and gold
He thought, "Maybe I'm going insane"
Her gown was no more than the water could cover
This time would not come again

And the white mares dance
And the lady asks
"Take my wisdom with you as you ride
If you kill the dark Lord of Death
Someday, I shall be your wife

And the birds are still singing
And the song is now sweeping
Like a silver, a silver shimmering flood

For you, Rhiannon
I would fight, I would fight the world

For you are in my blood
For you, for you are in my blood
This is not on there either.

This isn't on the record. if I see the lyrics I heard, I will confirm. Maybe she never demo'd the song I heard but I do know its old.

Well there ya have folks. No "Lady From The Mountain". As if this week couldn't get any worse...

...but it's good to know now, instead of when I grab the album of the shelf for the first time.

Julia

I will ride through the snow
In an old-fashioned carriage
Drawn by a small, golden horse
She runs like the wind, yeah

When I run through your door
I am freed from my slavery
And the fires will be burnin' long before
You return to me

For in my house, there's no teasing spirits
No false laughter
No one has to tell me to be there, no one
I'll be there
I would suffer for the love
I would suffer for the love
And I would cry to be moved

I do two things these days
These nights, Julia is no fool
People ask me, they ask me, say
"So, Julia, just what is it that you do now?"

She does two things
Oh, in the light of the sunset
She does the stars
She does you

I love the stars
I give to you what I love
Who is the child
Who disregards all your rules?
I would suffer for the love
I would cry to be moved

I do two things these days
These nights, Julia is no fool
People ask me, they ask me, say
"So, Julia, just what is it that you do now, do now?"

She does two things, two things
Well, in the light of the sunset, yeah
Stars...she does you

No fool....
She does two things
Woah, in the light of the sunset, yeah, yeah, yeah
Does the stars
She loves you

She loves the stars
She does two things
She loves the stars
Ooh, yeah, yeah
Ooh, now, Julia, yeah, yeah

I would suffer for the love
Suffer, yeah, yeah
Suffer for the love
I would cry to be moved
I would cry...And I would cry...
She loves the stars
And she loves you

My Heart

Shadows and the first sign of life
Lifted my heart, as if some kind of wings
Lifted me up, and so became
Your face, your name
After all these years, it's still the same
And you're not to blame

Well, my heart still stops when I stand before you
And my heart still breaks when you take my hand
And my eyes still close when someone speaks your name
You understand, it's all the same

Windows, like the eyes to the soul
From across the room, and the crowd fades away
You stand alone, like nothing's changed
Your face, your name
After all these years, it's still the same
You're not to blame

Well, my heart still stops when I stand before you
And my heart still breaks when you take my hand
And my eyes still close when someone speaks your name
And you understand
It's all the same

My heart still stops when I stand before you
And my heart still breaks when you take my hand
And my eyes still close when someone speaks your name
And you understand

Well, my heart still stops when I stand before you
Ooh, and my heart still breaks when you take my hand
And my heart still cries when someone speaks your name
And you understand
It's all the same
It's all the same

Are You Mine

Are you mine, all the time?
Stay up with me through the night?
Will the lovelight always shine
In your eyes, just like in mine?
Will you share the good and the bad?
Bring me joy when I am sad?
Tell me, darling, are you mine, only mine?

Are you mine?
(Yes I am)
All the time?
(Yes I am)
Are you mine alone?
(Yes I am)
All my own?
(Yes I am)

No one else would ever do
I'll be yours, I'll be true
Don't worry, dear
Have no fear
'Cause I'm yours

Are you mine, (yes) all the time?
Stay up with me through the night?
Will the lovelight always shine (lovelight)
In your eyes, just like in mine? (My eyes)
Will you share the good and bad? (Your eyes)
Bring me joy when I am sad?
Tell me, darling, (Tell me) are you mine, (mine) only mine?

Are you mine?
(Yes I am)
All the time?
(Yes I am)
Mine alone?
(Yes I am)
All my own?
(Ooh, all your own)

No one else could ever do
I'll be yours, I'll be true
Don't worry, dear
Have no fear
'Cause I'm yours

Don't worry, dear
Have no fear
'Cause I'm yours

Amber

When I was young, I can remember the day
When far off in the distance, I heard someone say
"You've a daughter, born a Gemini, name of Amber
Born today"
Always be Amber
Remember...look inside
Be forever, tiny lady
I remember...

Beautiful daughter, when you were mine
Gemini Amber, your color was brown
The sign that I gave you in May
It's Gemini, Amber, your arms open wide
Who'll protect you from the things that you say
Always be Amber
Remember to be kind
Be forever, beautiful daughter
I remember...

Brown eyes in Amber
When you were mine

Baby Doll

My girlfriend saw my husband
They're comin' 'cross town to get me
He's been gone five years or more
And expects me to be waitin'
Oh, Lord, help me buy the train ticket
Tell me, what have I got to sell?
Oh, a pink satin dress and a silver tray
And an abalone shell

Runnin' out the back door, tryin' to get away
Almost at the river, you'll never catch me now
Oh, say it all, say it all
So sad for you, sad baby doll
Oh, well, I watch you walk away
And I still hear you say, yeah
"Let the phone ring off the wall"

I could ask you to come back
It wouldn't matter at all
I could scream out that I am right
You could refuse my call
And I could cry in the middle of the night
Cry in the middle of the night
Cry in the middle of the night
Wouldn't matter at all

Out the back door, tryin' to get away
I'm almost to the river, you'll never catch me now
Ooh, said, say it all, say it all
So sad for you, sad baby doll
Oh, as I watch you walk away
And I, I hear you say
"Let the phone ring off the wall"
Oh, yeah, wouldn't matter at all

I could call you up
Wouldn't matter at all
I could cry, cry
I could cry in the middle of the night
Woah! It doesn't matter at all
No, it wouldn't matter at all
You say it doesn't matter at all
It doesn't matter at all
In the middle of the night
(What did you want?)

I could ask you to come back
But that wouldn't be right
(What did you want?)
I could scream out that you were wrong
(What did you want?)
You refuse to fight me
(What did you want?)
I could cry in the middle of the night
Cry in the middle of the night
Cry in the middle of the night
Wouldn't matter at all

Anybody Out There

Sittin' here and asking
Myself, "Where did I go wrong?"
Try to find the reasons
Somehow, I can't go on

Anybody there?
Any time, anywhere
Anybody's here
Close my eyes....
Be not aware

Livin' in a maze
Stoned out on artificial pleasure
Movin' through a daze
I can't seem to get myself together

Anybody there?
Any time, anywhere
Anybody's here
Close my eyes....
Be not aware

Tell me all the answers
This silence is killing me
Was it all a plan, Sir?
Good God Almighty
Set me free
Set me free
Good God Almighty
Set me free

Anybody there?
Any time
Anybody's there
Close my eyes....
Be not aware
Anybody there?
Any time, anywhere
