the kingsmen version was released on 2 different labels.. one was a regional, pacific northwest label, "jerden". that particular 45 goes for big time bucks if you're lucky enough to find it.. ultra mega rare.

Yeah, you got me...I mistyped when I put "original" with the Kingsmen. Actually, not "...& the wailers"...the original recording was by The Pharoahs (1957) in which Richard Berry was a member.

Right on the Pharoahs, but there is another band between Pharaohs & Kingsmen.

After some googling, my memory has been jogged. Rockin' Robin Roberts & The Wailers. Whoever that may be.

Are you thinking of Rick Rillera & The Rhythm Rockers?

No. Rockin' Robin Roberts & The Wailers. I just remembered the "& the wailers" from an audiophile friend's collection.. we were going through 45s of the song one day after discussing songs that had been recorded time and time again. I just couldn't remember the "Rockin' Robin Roberts" part. For good reason.. could there be a more cheesie, generic late 50's stage name?

From what I can tell by research in the last 3 minutes, Rockin' Robin had been with another group, the Bluenotes, before leaving to record with the Wailers... their version of Louie Louie came from those sessions. It says they did enjoy some regional success though, so, who knows.

i liked it okay.it's one of those songs that it doesn't really matter who covers it or how they do it, it just can't live up to the standard set by the original.

imo, the vocal is the "worst" part about it; his voice just isn't as "on" as it maybe could have been, and at points, the timing seems odd compared to the steadiness of the guitar. i rather like the guitar arrangement... it's a buckingham-styled tribute instead of a straight up copy.

I was horrified for him when I heard it. But, to each their own.

I love it to death. But I can't talk about it. When I did before hell broke loose...so...I just stop by saying "no, you're not alone..."

He did Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" during the Mirage sessions.

And, let's not forget that "To Try For The Sun" from Under The Skin is a cover of Donovan's song.

Lindsey does some pretty decent covers, just keep him the hell away from the Beatles catalogue and no one will get hurt.
