I couldn't agree more, and I have seen my share of kids in this place (and believe me...I don't even like going there unless my friends persuade me!) until it turns my stomache! Dads sure are proud when Junior notices the female anatomy...

I am a true Southern gal...born and bred...but, I have my limits! When it comes to kids being exposed to this behavior it sickens me...

i think the 'redneck revolution' is just plain sad. people can lead happy and productive lives no matter what station they're in and to try and make light of living at the lower end of the economic scale or in a rural locale by rallying around the term 'redneck' just makes me roll my eyes.

i think that song is tragic. and i'd call gretchen wilson a talentless sell-out long before i'd call her a redneck anything.

as far as the child singing that song... nothing surprises me any more.

JMHO.

What makes me roll my eyes even more, though, are those who must have $1000 Prada bags, and won't take any less then flashey "look at the money I have" clothing, cars, etc. I could relate to the down to earth rednecks better then I could the head in the clouds rich types. What's so sad about it?

ITA that people who flaunt their wealth, or try to portray themselves as wealthier than they are, induce eye rolling.

if one could define a redneck without using the words barefoot, beer, or trailer, i might not be as opposed to the term. i've just never heard a definition that didn't sound mocking.

There are millions of worse songs that kid could be singing/hearing. But to stop a child from singing would be the worst thing of all. I think the child eating some of the wedding cake is more dangerous than her singing that song. You have to teach your child the proper way of life, not censor every single thing they could hear or see. Some things, yes, that song? plz. Incredibly harmless. The real thing, is not letting media totally raise your child. I heard all kinds of stupid songs when I was little, all it taught me was how to sing, or carry a tune, or rhythm, or whatever. For instance, another on the radio from when i was 3 had the phrase "I climbed up, on barstool mountain" - it really didn't inform me other than musically, as I was taught the ways in which drinking was not glamorous, and was harmful. What about Stevie singing "It's Late" with her grandpa? That song has innuendo.
Ridiculo.
And I agree with Maria that glorifying conspicuous consumption is far worse.

I don't think it's white trash ... I sang and listened to so many songs that I now realize were "risque," but I literally had NO idea what they were about. I knew all the words to these songs, but I didn't know what they meant, and I don't think it's made me a trashy person or a less useful adult.

Well, I consider myself sort of an expert in this department...why? Because I am from a small town in rural Georgia that is composed of 3 classes of people: your true rednecks (they have no idea they are actually that bad, and don't care at all!), the ones who are aware that they are rednecks and are bettering themselves, and the ones who have risen above and beyond that status.

When you look the term up in the dictionary or online, it is defined as: a poor white person in the southern United States or in modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

The term redneck originated from the farming community usage of the term farmer's tan, which of course is when your neck is red and your arms or whatever skin is exposed to the sun from the long, hard days of working in the sun. All the men in my family have this farmer's tan, but I don't consider them ALL rednecks as such...because they don't farm for a living and most of them don't have the idiosyncracies and characteristics of the term. I do find some things endearing about my true redneck cousins, but some of them are just plain gross and uncultured...and that is not just me being a snob.

What country music (I love country music, and have met most of these musicians, so I'm not hating here!) has done to glamorize and capitalize on some of these behaviors and mannerisms that I grew up witnessing in my own backyard that probably should not be revered is really interesting to me. I know it is probably funny for some of ya'll (yes, I know my roots! I say such things!) to poke fun at the "backwoods backwards" ways...but it is a way of life for many. I still have a problem with kids thinking that it is cool...but hey, I think the RAP COMMUNITY is way more of a problem we must deal with - so this is small potatoes compared to this!

two things:

1) She'll forget all about that song by the time she's 5 (and will have moved on to another current tune)

and

2) singing in public at 4 is how Stevie got her start. Gawd only knows what Grandpa had her singing in bars

in conclusion, I dont think this little girl singing that song at a wedding will damage her psyche, granted it wasnt the most TASTEFUL of songs but at least it wasnt RAP.

is this the same as black people using n----r? if you use it to describe yourself within a community, it's not offensive? maybe i am too PC for my own good.

not everything should be glamorized

ITA.

i'm not going after anyone, i just really hate that song. maybe i read too much into it. as for the kid singing the song, eh. i'd rather my child learn other things. i knew every word to 'why don't we get drunk and screw' by the time i was seven or eight and i turned out all right.

Eh. I think it's cute & funny. But I know what you guys are saying too. A few weeks ago we went to my niece's (4 hour long ) dance recital. Ages 2 through senior citizens, all colors & sizes, several different styles (jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, free form, etc.)

The hip hop group, ages 8 through 10 maybe, was incredible. One little girl especially. At one point, she did that butt shaking dance. I don't know how else to describe it - like when you jiggle your butt really fast? And another move where you're moving the butt up & down? Not grinding, not humping, not freaking, nothing that bad.

It wasn't vulgar, but part of me thought "whoa, should that little girl be moving like that?" Then I thought "well, if her teachers & mom feel that it's OK, who am I to judge? She's having a great time & she's damn good too."

What do you mean by "rap community?" The artists? the fans? and what kind of rap are you referring to? (it's not all gangsta rap)

I think ignorant, drunken rednecks are as much of a "problem" as any other stereotypically "hell-raising" group in society .

Right. I think a kid singing along to Getting Jiggy Wit It is not a big deal whereas a kid singing along to "shoot up ma ho's" is not so good. There are some in the "rap community" who are working against the negative stereotypes and don't put loads of garbage into their music.
