tell me if this is white trash

o.k. So I think everyone here pretty much knows I am from Kentucky (and if you didn't, now you do :D ) so this may not come as such a huge surprise to everyone. I went to a wedding reception last night. About half way through, the DJ played Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman". It started off fine, but about 1/3 of the way through the first verse, a little four year old girl got on the stage and started singing into the microphone- With her mother right beside her. For those of of you that don't know the song, here are the lyrics:

Well, I ain't never been the Barbie doll type
No, I can't swig that sweet Champagne, I'd rather drink beer all night
In a tavern or in a honky tonk or on a four-wheel drive tailgate
I've got posters on my wall of Skynyrd, Kid and Strait
Some people look down on me, but I don't give a rip
I'll stand barefooted in my own front yard with a baby on my hip
'Cause I'm a redneck woman
I ain't no high class broad
I'm just a product of my raising
I say, 'hey ya'll' and 'yee-haw'
And I keep my Christmas lights on
On my front porch all year long
And I know all the words to every Charlie Daniels song
So here's to all my sisters out there keeping it country
Let me get a big 'hell yeah' from the redneck girls like me, hell yeah
Victoria's Secret, well their stuff's real nice
But I can buy the same damn thing on a Wal-Mart shelf half price
And still look sexy, just as sexy as those models on TV
I don't need no designer tag to make my man want me
Well, you might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore
But in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door
I'm a redneck woman
I ain't no high class broad
I'm just a product of my raising
I say, 'hey y'all' and 'yee-haw'
And I keep my Christmas lights on
On my front porch all year long
And I know all the words to every Tanya Tucker song
So here's to all my sisters out there keeping it country
Let me get a big 'hell yeah' from the redneck girls like me, hell yeah
I'm a redneck woman
I ain't no high class broad
I'm just a product of my raising
I say, 'hey y'all' and 'yee-haw'
And I keep my Christmas lights on
On my front porch all year long
And I know all the words to every ol' Bocephus song
So here's to all my sisters out there keeping it country
Let me get a big 'hell yeah' from the redneck girls like me, hell yeah
Hell yeah, hell yeah
Hell yeah
I said hell yeah!

O.k. Now I know just the song itself is white trash  , but I kinda like it. The first time the little girl exclaimed "Hell yeah", it was kinda funny and cute. Many people were looking around thinking and asking people they came with.."did she say 'hell'??" yep..she sure did. But like I said. First time it was cute. Then we moved on to the second verse re: victoria's secret and sexy and blah blah. Am I just overreacting here?? We were all completely stunned and it became a little uncofortable. But hey. To each his own. HELL YEAH!!

Yes, that's pretty white-trashy. :sorry:

anyway-no, I agree! It totally is. I just felt so bad with my jaw dropped to the floor because I was afraid she was gonna be the bride's neice or something. So I tried to keep my comments to myself, but as soon as we were out of that place I couldnt' stop laughing!!!

White, Black or Hispanic - it's always trashy when people teach their kids and encourage them to do innapropriate things like that.

amber 07-30-2006 03:26 PM

I don't think it's bad. kids always learn songs, and mimic - she was just singing the lyrics. And that song had been everywhere.
It would be bad if she used cuss words in another context (which almost all kids do at sometime, anyway) and her mother didn't explain there were places where it isn't appropriate to use those words. But that wasn't the case here. I think it's cute she was singing. I mean, it's just "hell", which isn't even a bad word. It isn't any worse than when I was three I was singing "lousy lovers, pick their pray but they etc."? Also, last time I checked, "victoria's secret" wasn't a bad word.
I think you'd have to be pretty uptight to take offense at that, especially taking into account the nature of children.
Also, I like that song. I actually think it has somewhat of a good message. And people are supposed to have fun at a wedding, and sing and stuff.

I have a friend who when her little girl was that age (about 3 or 4) taught her to sing "Are you strong enough to be my man" (that song was really popular at the time). It was the cutest damn thing ever.

I couldn't agree more, and I have seen my share of kids in this place (and believe me...I don't even like going there unless my friends persuade me!) until it turns my stomache! Dads sure are proud when Junior notices the female anatomy...

I am a true Southern gal...born and bred...but, I have my limits! When it comes to kids being exposed to this behavior it sickens me...

I agree. I mean, if saying hell is the worst thing the kid does, mom's got it pretty good. I dunno. I was raised by pretty liberal parents, and I was allowed to express myself. Not at 4, but like AMber said, she's mimicing a song.

On a side note, I say ya'll, and am always bare foot in the yard... am I too, a Redneck Woman?

On a second side note, this song is my mom's ringtone!

i think the 'redneck revolution' is just plain sad. people can lead happy and productive lives no matter what station they're in and to try and make light of living at the lower end of the economic scale or in a rural locale by rallying around the term 'redneck' just makes me roll my eyes.

i think that song is tragic. and i'd call gretchen wilson a talentless sell-out long before i'd call her a redneck anything.

as far as the child singing that song... nothing surprises me any more.

JMHO.

What makes me roll my eyes even more, though, are those who must have $1000 Prada bags, and won't take any less then flashey "look at the money I have" clothing, cars, etc. I could relate to the down to earth rednecks better then I could the head in the clouds rich types. What's so sad about it?

Because you and I are hiding, among the inbred, toothless, KKK hood wearing folks!

I suppose there's nothing wrong with it, IF those are your values. If I had kids, especially young(under 10 or 12), I most definitely wouldn't want them to be running around singing songs about "doing it", and getting drunk. I believe that's laying the path for their future. JUST MY OPINION!

ITA that people who flaunt their wealth, or try to portray themselves as wealthier than they are, induce eye rolling.

if one could define a redneck without using the words barefoot, beer, or trailer, i might not be as opposed to the term. i've just never heard a definition that didn't sound mocking.

There are millions of worse songs that kid could be singing/hearing. But to stop a child from singing would be the worst thing of all. I think the child eating some of the wedding cake is more dangerous than her singing that song. You have to teach your child the proper way of life, not censor every single thing they could hear or see. Some things, yes, that song? plz. Incredibly harmless. The real thing, is not letting media totally raise your child. I heard all kinds of stupid songs when I was little, all it taught me was how to sing, or carry a tune, or rhythm, or whatever. For instance, another on the radio from when i was 3 had the phrase "I climbed up, on barstool mountain" - it really didn't inform me other than musically, as I was taught the ways in which drinking was not glamorous, and was harmful. What about Stevie singing "It's Late" with her grandpa? That song has innuendo.
Ridiculo.
And I agree with Maria that glorifying conspicuous consumption is far worse.

carrie721 07-30-2006 07:23 PM

I don't think it's white trash ... I sang and listened to so many songs that I now realize were "risque," but I literally had NO idea what they were about. I knew all the words to these songs, but I didn't know what they meant, and I don't think it's made me a trashy person or a less useful adult.

foxyluva 07-30-2006 07:26 PM

It must be an American thing - I have never heard that song before......
