I saw it at the movies on my eighteenth birthday and couldn't believe my eyes and ears. What I found even more bewildering at the time was Ebert, hack extraordinaire, giving it four out of four stars; bandying about the words and phrashes "magical," "Allen's funniest," "inspired," "wonderful," "absolutely wonderful," "fanciful," and "the best film Woody Allen has ever made," as if he was some fifties housewife who had just seen her very first musical and wanted to rush home to rub her spot over Gene Kelly & the unusual feelings that the movie had stirred within her. I reread his review as soon as I had gotten home and was nothing short of astounded by it. His taste is as good as Drew Barrymore's singing.
