Match Point

Anyone see it yet? I loved it, although it was a little too similar to another Woody Allen film (which I won't name, so as not to spoil).

I particularly enjoy Woody Allen films without Woody Allen in them, and without the neurotic factor.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers: Could he be more beautiful? I'd love for him to play Nick if they ever make a movie from The Line of Beauty.

Scarlett Johansson: Gorgeous as always, and another stellar performance.

I thought it was really great and it was a wonderful change of pace after all of those slight comedies he's been cranking out for almost a decade. Can't say that Rhys-Meyers impressed me, though. I particularly liked Brian Cox and Johansson.

Ha, I thought the same thing. I read a review that said it was his best movie since that one and I thought "No wonder, it's almost the exact same movie." It wasn't nearly as good as that one, though.

SPOILER

You are talking about Crimes and Misdemeanors, right?

It's next in line for me to see. I'll be back with my review this weekend. I've been really disappointed with Woody Allen movies the 15 years or so. I miss the Annie Hall and Crimes and Misdemeanors days. I think that was him at his peak. Starting with Shadows and Fog it was all down hill and I haven't liked a movie of his since before that. I do however have high hopes for Match Point. I agree with you Rickypt - I'm especially looking forward to it because of the lack of the Woody Allen neaurotic factor. I think I'm over that. Especially looking forward to Scarlett's rack!

Really? There have been some real turkeys (The Curse of the Jade Scorpion anyone? Celebrity? Everyone Says I Love You?), but I've liked quite a few of his movies over the past 15 years or so. Husbands and Wives, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Alice, and Small Time Crooks are particularly good.

David 01-11-2006 02:56 PM

I love Shadows & Fog. It's like playing monster with the kids on your cul-de-sac in the winter evenings. One kid was the monster & had to hunt down the other kids & then "kill" them. But then while the monster is chasing you, you stop to have a brief conversation about Kierkegaard with one of the other kids running from the monster. But you realize that the monster is gaining on you, so you stop discussing Kierkegaard & run like hell.

(I had kind of a special childhood.)

Woody Allen took a dump with "Everyone Says I Love You."

I saw it at the movies on my eighteenth birthday and couldn't believe my eyes and ears. What I found even more bewildering at the time was Ebert, hack extraordinaire, giving it four out of four stars; bandying about the words and phrashes "magical," "Allen's funniest," "inspired," "wonderful," "absolutely wonderful," "fanciful," and "the best film Woody Allen has ever made," as if he was some fifties housewife who had just seen her very first musical and wanted to rush home to rub her spot over Gene Kelly & the unusual feelings that the movie had stirred within her. I reread his review as soon as I had gotten home and was nothing short of astounded by it. His taste is as good as Drew Barrymore's singing.

Drew Barrymore didn't sing. She was the only one who refused to do it and Allen used Olivia Hayman's voice. Anyway even between horrid moments like Roberts - Allen , I liked all the homages to Marx Bros, An American in Paris... and Goldie Hawn. :)

Which is why I said his taste is as bad as Barrymore's singing. If I remember correctly, Allen said in an interview around the time the movie came out that she pleaded with him by saying that she doesn't even sing in the shower.

Of recent films (post Shadows and Fog...which was just OK), Mighty Aphrodite really cracks me up. Of course Bullets Over Broadway and Manhattan Murder Mystery. I actually enjoy Everyone Says I Love You. Small Time Crooks was enjoyable thanks to Tracey Ullman. Hollywood Ending was amusing.

Stinkers:
Celebrity
Husbands and Wives (not the dialog but the photography. Hated the cam style)
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (Hunt is no Keaton)

Yet To See (but soon)
Melinda and Melinda

I still don't know if I like or not Celebrity. Kenneth Branagh was a bad idea, but there's a certain frailty in some of the characters that makes me intrigued.
I think Husbands and Wives is his most misogynistic movie but Judy Davis gave such an incredible performance that makes me love it, and I always like to see Sydney Pollack as an actor.
I totally agree on The Curse of Jade Scorpion, the idea was great but very poorly executed and I don't know why, Helen Hunt on the big screen grates on my nerves.
