Phrases you hate...

"than" when it should be "then" and vice versa.
I don't understand, English is not my first language but even I know those things
But correct spelling is a pet peeve in Dutch too.

And I'm with Krista on "culture of life." Hate that.

I also hate it when people use "anxious" to mean "eager," though it's technically correct. It used to be incorrect, but since it was so common I guess the dictionary changed the definition of "anxious," which used to mean tense and not eager. I used to just want to scream whenever someone would say "I'm really anxious to get started" or something like that. I've had to get over it to a degree because it is so common. I actually wrote a paper for a grammar class claiming that "anxious" should not be used to mean "eager" and found many dictionaries that backed up my claim but unfortunately they were all a little dated. My professor told me I had done my research but it was still wrong.

One of my pet-peeves is what I perceive as misspelling of the word "y'all." Why would someone say "ya'll" when the word (granted it's not a real word, but still) is a contraction of "you" and "all"? The only logical spelling in that case is "y'all." I don't know--perhaps the other spelling refers to "ya" and "all."

I can't stand it when I see signs in the front of establishments that say "CONGRADULATIONS GRADUATES!" I learned how to spell that word when I was a little kid and grown adults can't spell it correctly?

Ahhhhhhhh. I'm nearly finished with my school work so I'm taking a break. (Well, I mean, this phase of it, anyway). It's so good to go back to being Ledge-obsessed. And this book I'm reading about the Salem witch trials is just awful so I'm loving this board right now.

When people use the wrong tense of the verb "see". I now live in the middle of P-E-N-N-S-Y-L-T-U-C-K-Y . . .

As an example . . . "Well, I seen her yesterday at the Walmart".

God, it irks me to no end.

OR

"I need to red up the room". What the heck does that mean, and am I even spelling it right?!

Never heard anyone say "red up" or anything like that, but I live in California and LOTS of people say that they "seen him/her/it." People... the correct usage of the verb "see" in the past tense is "saw." "Seen" should only be used when preceded by "have" or "have not."

I HATE that too....when people use then rather than "than" - dare I say there's a Ledgie who does that a lot - and I ALWAYS have to hold my fingers from correcting

I don't get that there are people who can't differentiate between: they're, their and there; your, you're; and then and than. It annoys me to no end.

And I also hate the the "I seen them at...." mistake - SO annoying as well as people who say, "well we was going to go but couldn't..." URG!!! we WERE!!!! lol - I had a friend who always said "seen" and "was" In the wrong places - he's a teacher now

I may be wrong, but I think that's a PA dutch expression. My grandmother used that a lot when I was growing up in Harrisburg. Also "outen the lights," "rutschin around," (fidgety) and others I can't think of right now.

I grew up in the central PA area, and I also heard the "rutschin around" comment. I am sure that there are even more that I cannot think of now.
