I was under the imperssion that you don't necessarily need the original artist's/writer's permission so long as you pay the right fees?

This is correct. Anyone can cover anything as long as the proper people get their dough.

On a related note-

Did anyone happen to see Lindsay Lohan on The Ellen Degeneres Show singing (if you can call it that) her new song from her new album???



Granted, she had enough courage to sing it live.... but, holey-moley was that chick flat and outta tune allllll over the place. It was quite embarrassing.
