hi guyz, Im new here..but am very into FM and Stevie,
I have to say I adore both the WOS and SYW versions, but SYW is better...I feel that the remix is too slow and the backup melodies are not particularly unique to FM. Now, i would LOVE to hear the live version of Thrown down a la SYW tho!!! The Shaking the Faith verse is fantabulous (lol) on the SYW version.... Russ ![]()

OK I agree that I like the "shakin' the faith" verse and that I loathe the goofy backup singers on the WOS version. But I still prefer it on the whole.

I like both versions cause they are fairly different from one another, but the true test came after having both for a looong time. I find myself skipping over the wall of sound version at times. The album cut never gets skipped, I like it that much. I think it's probably my fave on the whole album. I love the added verse too, it breaks it up. Making it not so routine.

Stevie's vocal on the WOS version has that kind of spacey, inanimate, distant quality of her Street Angel, aka Klonopin, Days. And this is a perfect example of less being more. I suspect that Lindsey took the relatively drab demo and tried to fashion it into something interesting by adding layer upon layer of instrumentation and vocals. And ultimately it just sounds too busy and detracts from the true timbre of the song, which is about one woman and her struggle with rejection.
The SYW version is SO much better in conveying this lonely, pained feeling. The sparse, melancholy arrangements and the guitar riff are the perfect foundation for Stevie's much more impassioned, stronger vocal. |
