The last four or five lines of 'Love Is' kill me. To me, it was the greatest way to end TISL. When she wrote/sings the following lines:
"Am I happy, yes I am... Do I know you love me now, yes I do... Do I know you cannot stay, I know...all about love ...all about love" To me, she is answering the first two questions directly to her lover (who is jilting her at that moment). But, the last question, it seems like instead of addressing his question head-on, she is instead answering it with a sweeping, general answer. So instead of saying to him "I know you cannot stay" she is saying 'you' as meaning all the men in her life who said the same thing about her rock and roll/touring/recording/press lifestyle. And when she says "I know", she's not saying 'I know' about him directly, but she's saying 'I know' about love in general. And how love goes, and how it sometimes never works. It's no longer in the context of that particular relationship which was ending. It was about all relationships. Or am I reading it too deeply. |
