haha, no I grew up in the South.

But no, I agree... there are d*cks everywhere - it's just a generalization that Southerners have. And there are certainly southerners that are not mannerly and not friendly and should be ashamed to call em-selves suth-urn.

Dude, you have. I think you were at an event - a parade or something? Seriously, it was you with another person or group of people. I had no idea you were an Asian male until I saw it. Maybe another board?

In my experience it's mostly older people (although I'm a Yankee. ) Mostly not meant to be derogatory - that's just the term(s) they knew growing up. Still offensive.

That's not actually a pic of Ed. I don't think.

Lol! That's funny because generalization because in the south, northerners are viewed as having less manners & being less friendly.
Yes, but maybe we're more PC.

Saying someone is Oriental isn't really derogatory, it's just incorrect. There's not "Orient" anymore - it's called ASIA. Objects should be called Oriental; people should not.

We grew up five minutes away from each other, and I just have to chime in that I think our "tolerance" is not necessarily a good thing. When you teach a child to be tolerant of someone else, you're teaching that child that someone's race and sexuality are something that you have to accept. The wording makes it seem like their differences are a problem, but like the good little white people we are, it's a problem we can pride ourselves on overcoming. I will be such a happy woman when we stop being satisfied with being tolerant and aim towards acting like decent human beings to other decent human beings.

yeah thats why I was making the point to show the "general" differences... haha... which would you rather have? More PC-ness equals less friendly? A bit silly really.

I remember when we moved from Texas to Tennessee in 1992... the kids in TN thought we were from "New Yaw-rk" because of the way we spoke. We had moved around so much as kids that, our accents were really muddled. I remember find that really funny even as a teen... that coming from Texas (such a country state) and moving to the other most well known country state and getting accused of being new yorkers. *shakes head*

I completely agree with this.
If I could go back and edit "tolerant" with "accepting / embracing" I would.

My hair as been blond in the past, but never curly. And I swear on all that is holy (Stevie) I have never posted a picture of myself online. Not just the Ledge, but any message board.

Maybe you saw me at a concert. I would have been high school age, though...

I grew up in Vermont, where everyone speaks with a Northeastern accent.

Today I was doing a debate on the legalization of prostitution in my argument class. Well, I referenced Nevada.

Everyone in my class, with their Pa accent's thought it was hilarious the way I said.

Na, Vaa, Da instead of how they say it Ne, Va, Da.

It's like that with Aunt too. I say Aunt, while everyone else within this area say "Ant."

OMG, THAT'S NOT ME!!! No, no, no, no... I just used a random image from Google to underscore the Facepalm-worthy comment. Ugh.

Thank you. Where were you when I was in school? I was teased mercilessly for being too shy, having no friends, etc. I know it shouldn't, but it bothers me to this day.

BTW- You may have my hair. When I get a haircut, I'll send you the clippings.

^^Proof that I did not post a picture. HejiraNYC does not do parades or groups or other boards. And as far as I'm aware, I did not get snapped by the paparazzi at the B&N signing. If I sense a snapping camera in my midst, I will duck or run. I'm just not a fan of photography at all.

And I looked like total, and complete sh*t that night. I wasn't too fun, either. I left early because I'm a pathetic addict and didn't want to be around friends that were drinking/having a good time, and be a Debbie downer. My excuse for leaving early was, I had to work the next morning.
