The New York Metropolitan Area just got
slammed once again by a snowstorm.
Long Island is pretty much damn near closed
down for the day.

Ugh... I'm completely done with this nasty-azz winter. Nineteen inches in Central Park, and they were calling for 6-8". I knew something was up when I saw lightning in the sky around 9 last night. I'm not even thinking about driving out to Long Island this weekend and shoveling the driveway, which already had about a foot of snow on it from previous storms.

It's really happening. I'm finally redoing my room!!! This is something I've wanted to do the last 2 years. Yesterday my sister and I cleaned out my room and primed the walls. I'm not painting until Sunday so I'm moving back in to my room today and putting all my stuff including my mattress on the floor. I have a feeling I'm going to be listening to Gypsy a lot the next couple of days

Right? Ok, i'm not crazy when i was like what the hell is all this when I woke up to another foot and a half of snow this morning. I'm DREADING going out to shovel my car out again.

At the rate we are going, we should mark February 26th down as the next big storm. The two big ones so far were exactly 1 month apart. Which means we've had snow on the ground for 1 month solid. I cannot remember a time ever where we've had this in the NYC metro area...maybe in the 70s, but i was a little tyke then.

I've never seen it snow so persistently for so long.
I rarely check the weather because I live on campus, and it's kind of irrelevant to my two black walk to class. So every morning I wake up, see yet more snow, and go, "Seriously?"

In recent years, we might have 1-2 inches here, 2-3 inches there, some mixed precip one morning, but not 40+ inches in a month.

I hope your schools plows your walkways for you.

I took the Metro North train to work this morning, which is elevated once you go above 96th Street. It was eerie (but beautiful) to see the streets of Harlem completely deserted; usually 125th Street is abuzz. I can't stand the inconvenience, but I love those fleeting moments when the city is so white, pristine and quiet. I'm sure it will be all brown, slushy and manky by the time I get back home tonight.

...and then March 26th too while you're at it! That happens to be the night of the Two (non) Blondes tour at MSG, so it better not happen!

York Avenue? Isn't that somewhere up in Connecticut? Two days after the Christmas blizzard I had to dig my car out; it was parked on the street and literally buried to the point where I couldn't find it at first. Next thing I know, people were taking pictures of me as I was digging (for three hours!), as if to say "look at this unfortunate moron." At first, I was thinking of saying, "take a picture, it will last longer," until I realized that's what they were actually doing!

This winter is punishing, for PA, NJ, NY and CT. 19 inches of snow fell last night, on top of more than 2 feet still on the ground in my yard. Where the city snowplows push the snow at the end of my driveway, the mound is as tall as I am- 6 feet.
People not in the states affected don't realize how huge and unprecedented the storms are in this area- This was the 8th storm since Dec. 26 in CT, and it's unreal.
Driving, when one can, y'all can't see to take a left turn and cross traffic without being hit head on, the snowbanks are so high. Go the long way, or die
We need a thaw! My gutters have been filled with ice for weeks. The hanging icicles are monstrosities.
Like H. wrote, it is "eerie (but beautiful)", but is also hazardous beyond belief. (Sort of like my own self, har!)*
* No, I won't turn brown, slushy and manky by tonight- I hope!

They do--thank god! I spent three semesters at a college in Vermont, known for its Environmental Studies. It's a VERY eco school, and despite the mountains of snow they get, they don't even salt the walkways, because it's bad for the environment. I try really hard to be as environmentally friendly as I can, but that was totally ridiculous. It's a very hilly school, and kids broke limbs falling every year. I kept thinking that if they were walking alone at night, something really bad could happen.

I transferred to a school in NYC, where I grew up, and I really can't complain about the snow ever again!

I wish I could redecorate my bedroom, but unfortunately I just have too much stuff and the house is too small. But when I get my own place I am so getting handy with the paints and eclectic furniture. And I've already decided that I'm going to ditch the bed and go for a mattress on my floor ala Gypsy

yeah, eco-friendly good...eco-friendly in a place where it snows for months straight...not so good!! But see, you got the Vermont feel in NYC. What school by the way? I'm just across the Hud river from you in Edgewater.

I went to school in Indiana (IU-Bloomington) and I remember 2 distinct weather events. In my freshman year (winter 1994) the wind chills were like -40 or something and it was so cold cars and buses wouldn't start so they canceled classes. Then my junior year (winter 1996) the Blizzard of '96 occurred -- which affected pretty much anyone east of the Mississippi if memory serves. I remember flying over that storm and when I landed in Indy, the snow banks were just under the plane wings. It took me 2 days to dig my car out. Anyway, i just remember walking through campus a few days later and you could tell where someone in one of those Bobcats went through and cleared the paths. They were only wide enough to walk single file. I remember the snow was about 3 feet high and i felt like i was going to class in some sort of bobsled track. You couldn't see anything!
