I understand "love's a state of mind" but what does "dreams unwind" mean?

I think it's a great line that was somehow very much a perfect hook that came at the end of the song on the original LP and single version- 'dreams unwind, love's a state of mind'- It just worked, and like viv said, it can mean whatever anyone wants it to, but it was the trippy 70s and I don't think anybody even questioned 'dreams unwind'- it just sort of made sense to listeners without them thinking about it, and sounded cool!
Since last year when I heard the esteemed 'Is That What You Want' 1980 ending to Rhiannon, I've often wondered if a meaning of it could be: 'Dreams unwind, loves a state of mind, is that what you want'--- did she mean in that super-trance-y performance that the question was did Rhiannon or Rhiannon's would-be conquestor want love only to be a state of mind, is that what you want, and nothing else, actual love realized would be more than what you want, the reality of love isn't always so lovely, but the the state of mind of love could promise you Heaven. It adds another dimension to the song, I'd like her to revive that line! I think many listeners may have thought the 'is that what you want' line was Stevie asking the audience if they wanted the by-then already legendary big vocal finale to Rhiannon, but I think the question of whether real love is actually desired or if one actually prefers love just to be a state of mind is very deep, lyrically! But, back to the thread starters query, I think 'dreams unwind' just sounded good and maybe didn't have any real meaning, at the time. Last edited by Nikolaj; 02-13-2010 at 12:56 PM.. |

I've always thought of it as your dreams can unravel.

Yes, I agree with unravel.
I think it means that dreams fall apart. Your hopes for the future dissolve, never come to fruition. You planned things one way, with one person and then everything changes, passes, moves on. Michele |

Dreams unwind to become reality?

That's exactly what I think it means. You have this dream of "love" but it kinda unravels, falls apart, and you realize love isn't what you dreamed it was, but rather just a state of mind.

"dreams unwind, love's a state of mind"...to me, this means, you dream of a perfect and true love, and maybe you find it, and that's great...but, the road to finding it is filled with many, many loves we only think is the "one". Then, we find out it's not to be, and our "dream" unwinds to reveal..love is a state of mind.
