I think it's a great line that was somehow very much a perfect hook that came at the end of the song on the original LP and single version- 'dreams unwind, love's a state of mind'- It just worked, and like viv said, it can mean whatever anyone wants it to, but it was the trippy 70s and I don't think anybody even questioned 'dreams unwind'- it just sort of made sense to listeners without them thinking about it, and sounded cool!
Since last year when I heard the esteemed 'Is That What You Want' 1980 ending to Rhiannon, I've often wondered if a meaning of it could be:
'Dreams unwind, loves a state of mind, is that what you want'--- did she mean in that super-trance-y performance that the question was did Rhiannon or Rhiannon's would-be conquestor want love only to be a state of mind, is that what you want, and nothing else, actual love realized would be more than what you want, the reality of love isn't always so lovely, but the the state of mind of love could promise you Heaven. It adds another dimension to the song, I'd like her to revive that line!
I think many listeners may have thought the 'is that what you want' line was Stevie asking the audience if they wanted the by-then already legendary big vocal finale to Rhiannon, but I think the question of whether real love is actually desired or if one actually prefers love just to be a state of mind is very deep, lyrically!
But, back to the thread starters query, I think 'dreams unwind' just sounded good and maybe didn't have any real meaning, at the time.
