The last four or five lines of 'Love Is' kill me. To me, it was the greatest way to end TISL. When she wrote/sings the following lines:
"Am I happy, yes I am... Do I know you love me now, yes I do... Do I know you cannot stay, I know...all about love ...all about love" To me, she is answering the first two questions directly to her lover (who is jilting her at that moment). But, the last question, it seems like instead of addressing his question head-on, she is instead answering it with a sweeping, general answer. So instead of saying to him "I know you cannot stay" she is saying 'you' as meaning all the men in her life who said the same thing about her rock and roll/touring/recording/press lifestyle. And when she says "I know", she's not saying 'I know' about him directly, but she's saying 'I know' about love in general. And how love goes, and how it sometimes never works. It's no longer in the context of that particular relationship which was ending. It was about all relationships. Or am I reading it too deeply. |

^^^ that line and "love is....knowing you won't let go" are my two favorite parts of that song.
and i think in the beginning parts of the sectioned you mentioned, she's mostly trying to understand with the "yes I am" and "yes I do" but with the "i know" it just doesn't seem as effective or believable as the other lines. It's like she's trying to convince herself (and him) that she is happy and understands why he's leaving but in reality, she's just hurting. for example, when he says "you know that i loved you then" all she can say is "ooh well" like...."well, yeah, but that doesn't mean **** now, does it?" imo anyway. |

I just love this song so much. I agree, the song, and the last lines make for an excellent closing to the album.
