You have to remember - that was the first FM Album in YEARS and
to hear her sing in that voice was shocking to say the least!
Amazing that she sounds so radicaly different on each of her 3 songs here, she had the same thing going on on RAL.

I like the ravaged vocals they are so vulnerable and yet strong at the same time. Very intoxicating combination and not something alot of singers are able to acomplish.

Mirage is an appallingly boring album as far as I'm concerned.... Gypsy and the Hold Me video are its only saving graces!! I find it really dull; there's no sparkle or light to _any_ of the songs like there is on Tusk or SYW, which I find have really distinct atmospheres and moods. Mirage on the other hand is just kind of ... drone....!

TBH, I feel that The Second Time is far superior to this one. It has always really brought out emotions in me whenever I hear it. Really Poignant.

I am in the camp that loves this song. Yeah, Stevie's vocals aren't the best, but that sort of adds to the song for me, drives the sentiment home a little harder. And Lindsey at the end kills me. The sound of HIS voice, especially after hers in the shape its in, just makes the song all the more moving to me. It makes me wonder who's idea it was to have Lindsey come in at the end like that.

Stevie said it was her idea:

"That's one of my favorite things. I made him sing with me. I said, 'Lindsey, you're gonna sing on all my songs whether you like it or not. You have to sing this with me. So we went out and sang 'If I see you again, will it be over?' We sang it in unison, then I snuck in and took my voice off. Otherwise, I'd have never gotten him to do it. See, Lindsey's pretty shy and he's singing differently there than he is on anything else on the record. He wouldn't think to do that: to sing on my song at the end. He would think to sing with me, but he wouldn't want to end it. But that's what I wanted, to leave people feeling they are really talking to each other."

Beautiful song, beautiful lead vocal, beautiful "guest" vocal, & beautiful arrangement & instrumental performance.

I love WISYA. The sad, quavering voice, and the 'whatsmatta babys'. Lots of times, when I am very depressed, if some asks me "what's the matter?" I will just lose it. It's like, "Please don't ask me how I feel, or what's the matter, because it's all too much right now, and it hurts too much.."

My mom, many years ago, once told me that she herself felt that way, and 'understood' when I got in those dark places. She would never ask me "what's the matter", instead she'd try to make it better. And she told me "I know what it's like, when someone asks you what's wrong and you feel like falling apart". I love my mom..

Anyway, back to WISYA. It is (to me) the last of the old Stevie. I don't know when it was recorded compared to WTTR...S or SW or any of the other TITN tracks, but it is the last Stevie track on the album so in effect it ends the whole Stevie era. And it drifts off...slowly, and Lindsey's vocal and guitar...slowly fading into the distance...until they are no longer visible. Then, they're gone. "Again and again...over and over..."

End. Roll credits...end of an era.

And for me as well, it's Lindsey's part at the end that really gets me!!

It's the lyric change from "When I see you" to "If I see you" that's so tragic. I wonder whose idea that was, Stevie's or Lindsey's?

I think this alternate mix is better than the album version, though; the way the voices blend at the end and kind of answer each other just fits the whole thing better and brings out that sadness, in my opinion.

Would it be at all possible to get a repost of this version? I don't think I've ever heard it with both of them on the end....thanks in advance!

about the song...absolutely love it! I never understood all the negativity...I think the 'ravaged' vocal on it suits the song perfectly...I do think it's one of Stevie's saddest songs (along with, of course, Storms...) But THE saddest song has to be Planets Of The Universe, or as it was originally known, NO LIGHT... which basically says it all for me...There is no hope...of course, when it finally did see the light of day on TISL, it was given a modicum of hope...but that one still gets my vote...

I always think of The Second Time as a sort of a sequel to WISYA...I love them both ...

Do you have No Light? I want that so badly. It's one of the things missing from my collection. All of the Planets demos I have are different than the one I'm looking for. I'm looking for the piano ballad. At the end she says, "That is so intense". There is one that has really good audio quality, and I've been dying to find it. I agree that it's one of the saddest, and one of my favorites. I would really appreciate it if someone could post a download link.

I'm particularly struck by the sadness of these lyrics in No Light:

Now I know I was wrong
To live for a dream
If I had my life to live over
I would never dream
I would never dream.....
