It's not the skinny person's fault that you aren't skinny. I'm also sick of people blaming the media for their low self esteem about their weight, but, that's a complex issue. I'm not saying it isn't valid, I'm saying I'm sick of it. Quit watching the damn TV, and go out and exercise! That way you kill two birds with one stone! Quitcher whining!
Also, it is unhealthy to be more than a few lbs. overweight, and people should feel bad about that - Though not necessarily about the way they look.

My aunt was doing this at my party, she was really coming down on thin people. A few days before, someone said she looked younger than her husband's neice, who is actually younger. His neice is thin and into designer everything. But my aunt isn't. She went on and on about how rediculous it is to be that way (thin and designer). Meanwhile my roommate is sitting across the way just looking at her like, "Do you even know what you are saying?" It was bad. I hate that too.

You can be mad that someone else can eat a lot and be thin while you can't but you can't be mad at them. It doesn't make sense. Although I sometimes am mad at my roommate. Seriously, you should see the size of those bowls of ice cream!

I think that the media influence on self-esteem is very real. But you're right, people are ultimately responsible for their own self-image. Kids aren't though, they are heavily influenced by the images they see. Therefore these images have actually shaped who we are in some ways. We are a product of all of our experiences, including what we have seen and heard in the media. You can't help but internalize those images in ways you aren't even fully aware of. Media people should be more responsible but I don't think there should be regulations or anything. Oh hell no. Just have a conscience people, I mean "heroine chic"? That was just ass.

Lame. She must feel really bad about herself.

I guess. But really, it's kind of a blessing in disguise. Ice Cream still isn't healthy, even though she doesn't gain weight from it. So, even though you may be "forced" to eat more healthfully to keep your weight down, at least you are eating healthfully. My dad is the same way, with ice cream, too - he is skinny. Still can have high cholesterol, or blood sugar issues, or whatnot.

Yeah, that's why people should turn the damn TV off, and not let their kids watch it until they are older. It won't filter out all images, obviously, but it will filter out a hugenormous amount of them.
Also, the media to a large degree shows us what we want to see. Yes, heroine chic was ass. But talking about conscience, how people can, in good conscience, allow their young children to watch TV in great volumes - like most do - is beyond my comprehension.

O, preach it!

When I was in my teens, I was repeatedly accused of being anorexic because of my weight, or lack thereof. I would seriously gorge myself and not gain a thing, not until college. Even up until then though, older girls, or my mother's friends would say I was lucky to have such a problem, but I really didn't see it that way. Anyway, as I got older, I have put on a healthy amount of what, because, well, that's just how the human body works.

Anyway, my point is, the vast majority of women in Hollywood, who are sticks, never admit to crash dieting, or an unhealthy lifestyle...when, although it may be possible for a few, women in their 30's just do not weigh 100 ponds without effort. They just don't. And visible bones aren't attractive. On anyone. Blablabla.

And for the record, I don't have a hate-on for the skinnies...I'm at a slim but healthy weight myself. But I don't like the bone-racks that claim ignorance on how they got that way.

Okay, but I think Pompeo is really just like that.
I agree, it would be great if it was widely known some of the more unhealthy practices of hollywood slimmers. But would that make people do the same thing, or the opposite?

Hmm, hard to say. I just hate all the fibbing. I remember Patricia Heaton (from that Raymond show that everyone seems to love) said once in an interview...after Mary Hart fawned over how much baby weight she had lost so rapidly....that she wasn't going to lie and that she was on the horrible cabbage soup diet. She had had nothing but cabbage soup for weeks. And she said she was starving. And I thought, "well, at least she's honest".

Man you sure do love your Pompeo, don't you Amber? What gives? Is it love of her character on the show? I've never seen it, so I don't know whether she's loveable or not.

I find Pompeo's "Meredith" to be one of the least likeable characters on the show. She gets on my damn nerves.

No, I just feel bad for her because she's naturally thin and everyone is ragging on her. It's lame.

No, tard, it was a big long story about her and her life in some normal magazine. She told the story about how all the other old Italian ladies (besides her grandma) in her neighborhood called her some word in italian that means really skinny, or tiny noodle, or something when she was little/growing up. It was all involved and stuff. Then the article went into this whole thing about how she has to watch what she eats to make sure she gets enough calories, etc., and it's tough because they work such long hours for the show, etc. If you don't want to believe it, fine, but it was a pretty fricking involved story to be a lie. It seemed pretty darn true. You seem oddly resistant to this story, though you are a skinny bean yourself.

When I was 16 I was 110 lbs and a lot of people told me how skinny I was. I wasn't particularly thrilled with my body at that time though. Plus people always said that with snark, you're so skinny. I had been naturally thin before that but the reason I was so thin (I'd lost 10 lbs) was I was depressed and could not eat, except dinner, for almost a year. That was a very sad time. So to get back-handed praise for being thin just felt awful. I can identify with that feeling.

But it seems even worse when it's the other way. Like when my grandfather told me how much weight I'd gained. Or my grandmother asked me if I drink beer cuz that has a lot of calories. Etc, etc. If you've been overweight you know how difficult it is. I think it's harder for them than for the skinnies. So if they don't have much sympathy for them I can see why.

Calista Flockhart used to claim she was naturally thin too but she finally admitted to an eating disorder. They always deny them. I'm not saying EP has one because I have known naturally skinny people who eat healthy. But you just never know.

I think you just argued with yourself, to wit:

How can we be ultimately responsible for our self image when that very self image is forumulated while we are kids (and watching TV or listening to radio or what have you)?? You're apparently saying that at some magical/mythical point, our self image should improve merely by virtue of aging? I cant think of anyone who was able to do that to any degree

And speaking for myself, I was ALWAYS skinny, a size 3 or 5 (and even THEN didnt have a good self image) until my mid to late 30's and then I got heavy relatively quickly. Talk about a real head trip!! Im trying to make peace with who I am at this moment and not stress about trying to recapture my glory days. Truth be told, when I WAS skinny, I had no end of men troubles because they wouldnt leave me alone and I couldnt differentiate between a decent man and a not so decent man, and because of my low self esteem anyway (thanks to my dad and my grandparents) I needed a man's attention for validation. Any man, even a bad one. Now that I am heavier and mostly left alone (except for the boy toys!!), Im HAPPY for the first freaking time in my life! So, these issues are pretty complex and I think the dynamics are more important than a cursory statement about "get out and exercise" or "change your diet". Im a firm believer in baby steps. Do what you can manage and take it in increments.

I didn't contradict myself because once we are mature we can change our beliefs and improve our self-image. We can choose what we see and what we buy into. However, it would be a lot easier if we were exposed to millions of healthy images instead of sick ones, wouldn't it?

I'm also happier single than I've ever been with a man, except for the first couple of months with my first BF and the first couple with Sean. Until they really revealed themselves. My self-image is also better now that I'm heavier but that is a result of maturity.
