I don't know that I can properly respond to this thread. When it comes to most artists from the 60s, 70s, and even 80s, I don't own or listen to actual "albums." I buy "greatest hits" and "best of" packages. Only if I find myself really in love with the music of the artist will I move on from compilations to actual albums. Thusly, my favorite 70's albums all come from a select and very predictable few.
Damn the Torpedoes - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (gee, what a surprise!) Fundamental Roll - Walter Egan (Now there's a real shocker!) Bombs Away Dream Babies - John Stewart (I wonder what curly-headed guitarist could've prompted my interest in this one...) |

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed what Nick said. True, of course. The first single was '76 and the first album was '77. |

and the loose but serving bandperformance...It touches deep everytime I hear it. For me it's a unity, not a collection.

She very accurately caught the whole meteoric rise and abysmal fall of many a rock star, most notably Janis (I heard the movie was loosely based on her life) good call! |

Often I find an artist's most popular tunes (or hits) aren't necessarily an indiction of their best work. Tusk is a perfect example of that - that album only really had two proper hits, Sara and Tusk, and yet as an album its utter perfection.
