Normally, on tour, George Hawkins took Stevie's part! He reached the notes, too. However, according to his Q-and-A, he said there was a night (possibly a couple nights--can't recall) where Stevie joined Loggins on stage and sang it with him at one of his concerts. Could you imagine how the crowd took that?!

There are pictures on the net where she is on stage singing with him.

In a fairly-recent YouTube interview with Melissa Manchester about the song, it was explained that the label pushed for Stevie. Loggins wanted Manchester on it, but Stevie was so hot at that time they knew they could get a smash with her...

Manchester confirms this in the interview.

Wow so it happened one time which explains the photos on the net. You would have thought they would have recorded it and it would have leaked by now. But back then it was just another day.

Thanks, that all makes sense. I’m not sure how famous Melissa Manchester was then, maybe Midnight Blue might have been out by then, but the record company would naturally want as much publicity and as big a name as possible for the song.

It is a very unusual song for Stevie, lyrically and vocally. I remember in 1989 during a field trip from school, and Whenever I Call You Friend came on the radio and some of my friends were really surprised when I told them that was Stevie singing with Kenny. It would have been nice if she had taken more chances like that, especially later in her career. As for why she doesn’t ever sing it live on her own tours, she probably really does see it as someone else’s song since she didn’t write it; it’s probably also very hard for her to sing.

Midnight Blue was out years earlier. I dont think the record company picked Stevie. It was probably Kenny. They toured together on that first Buck/Nicks Mac tour. Kenny saw her vocal range and she already had 2 monster hits under her belt with the Mac. Stevie was probably bigger than Melissa at the time too.
She could never do that song today. She's hitting really high notes even for her then. So many friendships lasted from that Fleetwood Mac/Loggins and Messina tour. Besides Stevie and Kenny. Sara was the wife of Loggins/Messina tour manager. Chris used George Hawkins on her solo stint. Chris also co-wrote Love In Store with Jim Recor who was married to Sara who eventually became Mick's wife and was Stevie's close friend. Mick used many of Kenny's musicians for his solo album too. If my memory is correct even Todd Sharpe was in the mix back then and developed a close relationship with Chris. If I remember correctly Sharpe worked with Hall and Oates who also toured with Loggins. In some ways that tour lasted throughout their career.

Stevie was most certainly more popular despite Melissa having had a longer career at that point. It cannot be overstated how much Stevie was the absolute new "It" girl during that time. It's also apparent that that un-ending attention and flattery had an impact on her.
