RAL singles racing up the charts

I love old countdown shows. You can hear Talk To Me's debut on the top 40 charts all the way at #33. Then I Cant Wait jumps 10 spots landing at #25. The biggest movers on the charts these weeks. All the music on these charts always brings me back to that time. Casey says I Cant Wait is Stevie's 10th top 40 solo hit. That confuses me. Bella Donna had 4, Wild Heart had 3 and RAL had 2. Would it not be #9? Is he counting Whenever I call you friend? But that was not really a solo hit? Was he wrong or is there a song I forgot about.

Casey was definitely referring to Whenever I Call You Friend. I think the song is even included on Stevie’s Enchanted box set.

I’ve always considered duets to be hits for both singers, regardless of whose album the song originally appeared on. Another good example would be Islands in the Stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton; it originally appeared on his album, but is on both of their greatest hits catalogs.

I would not disagree with you. However she is not credited on the 45 record nor on the jacket sleeve. Its only "Kenny Loggins Whenever I call you friend"
You can google those photos and see. For as much singing as she did, you would think it would at least say "featuring Stevie Nicks" So American Top 40 was being more generous than Kenny. Maybe that is why Stevie sort of talked tough on him years later.

I'm wondering if Casey could also be referring to the top 40 single "Needles and Pins" (Live) by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers featuring Stevie Nicks.

"Needles and Pins" only reached number 37 on the Top 40 charts, but it was released in December of 1985, the same month as "I Can't Wait".

If I recall correctly, both "I Can't Wait" and "Needles and Pins" were in the upper reaches of the Top 40 chart for 1 to 2 weeks. I remember Casey discussing on his show that Stevie had two singles in the Top 40 at the same time.

Whatever the case, I guess "Needles and Pins" would be Stevie's 11th Top 40 hit.

You are so smart! You absolutely could be right. I had no idea Needles and Pins cracked into the top 40 (barely). Yes both I Cant Wait and Needles and Pins were on the chart at the same time.
Thats a great trivia question and you got it!

Now on with the countdown. Casey Kasem calls a Chinese restaurant

I don’t need to check, I believe you

Yeah, I seem to vaguely remember someone saying Stevie thought Kenny was difficult to work with in the studio or something like that, which kind of made me laugh. It’s hard for me to imagine the guy who made so many pop songs as a strict taskmaster LOL but maybe he really was a tyrant in the studio

Anyone who dares to tell her to do something is a tyrant. That mean old Lindsey is, too.

bombaysaffires 08-12-2023 05:21 PM

Stevie said she called him "Kenny 'slave-driver' Loggins" and the reason she gave was that "he knows exactly what he wants in the studio... and boy he gets it! My hat is off to him because I am NOT easy to work with when people start TELLING me what to do". (Doubtful she would have called him that to his face)

So rather than let her wing it, it would seem he knew exactly how he wanted her to sing those lines and likely made her do take after take telling her what to do to make it exactly what he wanted.

This would have been the time when she was, in her words, "maybe just a little teeny bit conceited". Translated: when she realized she was now STEVIE NICKS, ROCK STAR with hit albums and a Grammy and all sorts of people wanting to work with her and she could snap her fingers and get whoever to get her whatever she wanted in her newfound fame and power and woe be to those who forget it.

By 1978 Stevie was a big star. I wonder why she was not credited. Perhaps they thought her name would overshadow Kenny? Many people were not aware it was her because she was not credited. I would expect on the album she must have received credit. But the single record and the record sleeve: NO. Maybe Warner Brothers would not allow it? Did she not lose the soundtrack to American Gigilo because Warner would not allow it. Blondie blew it out of the park but I would have loved to have know what lyrics she would have put to that song.

Although Kenny is very praising of Stevie today. He admits his solo career was going nowhere and that single made radio take him serious. I think its been debated before here but have the two ever performed the song live together? There are plenty of photos of them on stage together by mics. However you would think if true at least one recording would have made it to youtube after all these years?

Wait. Are you telling me Kenny would say that to Bob Dylan?
Please stick to the lyrics and proper tense sweetheart.

Yes, it is a little odd she wasn’t credited. Melissa Manchester wrote the song and she wrote in the liner notes for the version she sang that she was hurt and disappointed Kenny didn’t ask her to sing it with him.

Did you know Debbie Harry was the only member of Blondie to perform on Call Me? The music was played by studio musicians, not Blondie. When they heard the song for the first time on the radio, they were surprised when the DJ said it was the new song by Blondie.

How dare you! I'll have Karen set up a perimeter around my presidential suite and forbid you from even looking at me!

Yes. That is what I meant. I typed Blondie instead of Debbie Harry. The musical track was specifically written for Stevie Nicks. However her new record contract Modern would not allow her to perform a song outside of Modern for the movie soundtrack. I posted a thread about this over a year ago. It would have been Stevie's first solo single before Bella Donna. My first post said it was Warner that did not allow it but I knew it was some record company. She had just signed a solo deal and Modern was not going to lose Stevie's first solo song to someone else.

"Call Me" was composed by Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder as the main theme song of the 1980 film American Gigolo. It is played in the key of D minor with a tempo of 143 beats per minute,[9] with Blondie's vocals ranging from C4 to E5.[10] Moroder originally asked Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac to perform a song for the soundtrack, but she was prevented because of a recently signed contract with Modern Records. Moroder turned to Debbie Harry of Blondie, presenting Harry with an instrumental track called "Man Machine". Harry was asked to write the lyrics, a process that Harry states took a mere few hours.[11] The lyrics were written from the perspective of the main character in the film, a male prostitute.[12]

Kenny is cutthroat. He is credited with a top#5 solo hit. Stevie never got credited with anything in the Billboards books even though she sang half of the song. The song is a definite duet.

THIS EXPLAINS THE SONG.
