It is irresponsible for a physician to prescribe medication that has addictive qualities to a known addict. A doctor has training that a layperson does not, and therefore Stevie isn't wrong in saying that this guy has some responsibility for setting her back down the addiction path. Also, a prescription implies there's a need for the drug, a doctor has determined you need this and so you take it.

Listen, Stevie clearly consumed a wide variety of substances willingly, and suddenly living your life sober is a huge challenge. She's talked about this in some detail when talking about the tour after getting off Klonopin and doing concerts sober for the first time in a long time. So I'm sure when she got off coke she had the same concerns-- how will I do this without being high? Would make her more willing to go along with the Klonopin thing. But still, the doctor should have been worried about giving the drug to a person with known addiction issues and been monitoring her. And most importantly, Klonopin is NOT meant to be taken for more than a few months. That this guy kept refilling her Rx for YEARS is unconscionable.

Well put. I think I've posted similar sentiments in the past but perhaps not as well as you just did. I'm not saying Stevie should be absovled of all responsibility for her life, but regardless of her actions, what this guy did was malpractice. Prescribing an addictive drug for years on end and always having to up the dose and not recognizing the impact it was having??? Hard to believe he could be that incompetent. Makes me think Stevie was right, and he did just want a big rock star to come in and tell him crazy stories.

Wrap your brain around that one for a hot minute).
The fact that so many people misconstrued Stevie's comment about Reese really, really grates on me. Does no one have basic comprehension skills anymore?

Reese IS too old to play Stevie in a biopic.. because Stevie in a biopic would be Stevie when she was 25-30.. and Stevie when she was 25-30 looked about 15 for the most part. And by the time a biopic came to fruition, Reese would be 40. She wasn't dissing Reese. She was being realistic. Reese aged out of the potential role... Stevie HERSELF is too old to play Stevie in a biopic, too, obviously.

Thank you. I never understood the reaction to that comment at all. I actually thought Reese was too old to play Stevie in a biopic back when Stevie first brought up the possibility. That's not me being a youth-worshipping ageist or anything, it's just that a 30something playing a 20something just because she happens to be a BFF of the film's subject is going to end up looking incredibly silly.

Default Why didn't she adopt?

It's hard to believe that if she was really serious about adopting that she didn't just go ahead and do it. Ann Wilson did, so why not Stevie? Seems to me it was more of a pipe dream than anything else. I wonder if she loved the rock and roll lifestyle so much she just didn't want to sacrifice any of it in order to raise a child??

and we have a winner!

I think Stevie liked the idea of having a kid/being a mom more than the reality of it.

I was watching the last FM Behind the Music recently and Lindsey's brother was talking about LB becoming a dad, and how he (his brother) was surprised because being a husband and a parent requires "patience and compromise" and that those were two things Lindsey had a lot of difficulty with.

I kinda think it's along the same lines with Stevie... being a mother means NOT putting yourself first, NOT always getting your way, having to do things you DON"T want to do when you DON'T want to do them.... and Stevie's oft-stated "I don't like being told what to do" attitude would be a serious impediment to being a good parent. I got the feeling that her watching her friends and especially Lori go thru parenting (and the poopy diapers and tantrums and all that side of it) may have made her realize she made the right choice (for her).

I agree that the Dr is responsible to some degree but so is Stevie in all of this as well. She still kept taking the pills and she could've went for a second or third opinion in regards to taking said medications. Plus , I also don't think its helpful in putting it in the media all of the time. If she felt she was 'wronged' by said Dr. she should've sued him and be done with it in that fashion not the media fashion. That would've gotten the point across much , much more really. If Stevie said that she was wrong in continuing taking the medication herself, I think I'd have more sympathy for it all ---but I do think she does share some of the blame in this issue as well. Maybe this Dr. did go in with good intentions but than something went wrong? Who knows, but if it was all 'fan' crazed like Stevie states than he should've referred her to someone else and relieved himself of her treatment & or care. That wasn't correct either on his part. Though this Dr. isn't going to speak up--why should he? Stevie does enough talking for the both of them. He's probably retired by now. Stevie should've questioned taking so many med's in the first place. But this is a person that was addicted to cocaine so going from one drug to another was probably easy. She probably wasn't in her right mind anyway. But having her friend (sorry, I don't recall the guy that took all her med's , what she stated in an interview?) but having him take all those med's wasn't wise either. Of course , he should've said no that to experiment as well. I don't mean to say this to make anyone angry but Stevie was an adult at the time and could've questioned it or made another choice in the matter. She is part of the equation in this matter not just the Dr.

But that's kind of the point. You should be able to have faith that a licensed medical professional will demonstrate good judgement (which he did not) because you certainly can't expect a drug-addicted rock star to.

I do understand that, I work in a Dr's office have for over 23 yrs., I've seen patients come & go. We all have that choice. Some patients , not all tell me how disappointed they are in Dr. So & So and that is there right. So they change Dr's. Unfortunately, we don't know the full story only the one that Stevie tells us all of the time. There maybe a lot more to it? Who knows, I'm not saying' He' said Dr. doesn't own some responsibility in this matter, they both do period. But one of Stevie's family members or friends should've questioned the 'pills' if Stevie wasn't able to see what was in front of her at the time. If they could help her get into rehab than you'd think that say something about the amount of pill's she was taking at that time as well. Yes, we do put 'faith' in those we trust with our health, but as the patient we are part of that equation as well. No one knows everything , Dr's or pts. In the end we make the choices about our health. Sometimes we listen to our Dr's and sometimes we don't it is a choice. That's all I am saying. Unfortunately, Stevie didn't stop them sooner or leave this Dr sooner. Its sad but this is what occurred, or so it seems. Just some thoughts.

When you are prescribed a drug that impairs your judgement, it kinda......uh, impairs your judgement ie the ability to see that you are impaired is actually IMPAIRED. She only realized how messed up the whole thing was AFTER she went to rehab to get off it.

The doctor bears the responsibility for knowing the patient's history and prescribing accordingly. You do NOT give a KNOWN ADDICT on an addictive medication....and you DEFINITELY don't give a patient medication CLEARLY marked as short-term for a period of YEARS.

Yes, it's good to be an informed patient, but the dr is the expert-- otherwise what's the point of all those years of schooling and licensure??

Now, if you want to totally call Stevie out for giving her prescription to Glen, I"m with ya.

OK OK, you don't HAVE to YELL AT me please, I NEVER stated the DR in this CASE WASN'T wrong. Even so , WHY didn't someone IN Stevie's camp watch this and was more aware THAN she was at the time???? They could've called said DR out on the carpet about this. This is why I hate these discussions no matter WHAT your opinion is you get slammed for it. Stevie still took this medication it seems without questioning it even though she was an addict. So one of her family members or friends that weren't out of it on med's should've questioned her taking these pills than for her??? that's all I'm saying. Go ahead and be angry at me ---whatever. Both still have responsibility here no matter what. Yes, DRS should KNOW better but they are human NOT GOD , they still make errors like the rest of us. NONE of us is perfect period. Yes, it was wrong to give Glen that medication etc. but he should've taken them either.

whoa, I wasn't yelling at you... I was yelling at the DOCTOR. However, I can see now how you might have interpreted it that way, so I apologize for not being clearer in my meaning.

I don't get angry at people in this forum-- to me that's just silly. I don't take this forum that seriously that I would take offense or want to give offense to anyone. We all get passionate about certain subjects, but in the end it's just gossiping about people most of us have never met and don't really know at all. In other words, it's entertainment.

And I don't disagree with you that someone in Stevie's circle ought to have pointed out the problem. But I've always had the sense that Stevie doesn't want to hear what she doesn't want to hear, and rather than jeopardize their access to her, many people just keep quiet. It's a common problem around celebrities. I just don't think she was in a position to be objective about any of this, and a dr's first oath is to "do no harm". Given the patient's history, he totally should have known this was a bad call.

OMG, yes, yes, yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!

It's so hard to explain this to people who haven't experienced it. I was on a triple-threat of these drugs for 4 and a half years, and didn't realize anything was wrong. One problem was that I had no sense of consequences whatsoever; I could only see this moment right here, not beyond. For example, I would drive 90 miles an hour and not see problem with that. The only reason I can see now how drastically the drugs @#&%ed me up was that one day, I guess I had a split-second of clarity and I realized I hadn't laughed or gotten really angry in over four years, so I thought, "I wonder what it would be like if I wasn't on these?" and got myself off the drugs alone, all by myself. It was absolute hell. The withdrawal was unbelieveable. No, the doctor would not help; he just wanted to keep increasing my dosage. Then, once completely off the drugs, I looked back and thought "holy *&^%, that was me? What did I do????" But it was totally just a fluke that I took myself off, and only out of curiosity. That was five years ago when I got off them, but I would still be on them now if I left it up to the doctor, I mean, quack, I mean drug-pusher.

As for people around you not stepping up to tell you something is wrong, they wouldn't, because they don't see anything wrong. What they see is someone who used to be struggling and now is not. And since the person taking the drugs always answers "fine" (because they're in such an "even" zombie-fog) when asked how they are doing, other people don't see any problems. They think you finally got what you needed. In fact, I had friends and family questioning my choice to get off the drugs, becuase they thought it was really helping me.

Of course, now I blame myself for ever listening to a doctor in the first place. They're just a bunch of quacks. But I do have to share the blame with the quack, because I was at a point when I could not make decisions for myself, and trusted a professional to help with that.

One other note, you know, they throw you tranquilizers and seratonin and dopamine pills, but they never measure the levels in your body first to see if that's even the problem. If I had high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, they would run tests, and then prescribe based on the test results. For the psychotropic drugs, they just hand them out...."oh, here's some pills to increase your seratonin levels, even though we have no idea what your seratonin levels currently are...so take these, and don't forget to come back every month so I can increase your dosage, again, without testing you..."

Ok , thanks, cause really I didn't mean any harm by what I was saying. Thanks for hearing me out and I do agree that maybe Stevie's friends and family 'did' try to say things to her and she just didn't want to 'hear' them and choose to ignore it all. I can't begin to understand an addictive drug addict since I've not ever done that. Other than 'food' I guess can be my addiction of choice. So its not that I don't feel for her on some level. I do agree this Dr should've know much better and should've taken himself off of her case. Unfortunately he didn't. Thanks again for not being mad at me. I guess I recall the times in the past on this forum and others (Stevie & Mac related) that things did get of hand so to speak. Which I tried to stay out of all of that stuff. I do hear what your saying about the entertainment etc. I mean its nice that we can communicate in this way , I still recall the days of the paper fanzine's and you really didn't have a way except by snail mail or phone call. Thanks no harm !!
