'I will go to my grave angry at that man': Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks opens up about the psychiatrist she blames for ruining her chances of having a family

She was as famous for her drugs battle and rock and roll lifestyle as for her distinctive voice during the height of her fame with Fleetwood Mac.

And as Stevie Nicks returns on tour with the band, she reveals that she holds a 20-year grudge against the psychiatrist she claims prevented her from marrying and having children when he treated her for over eight years in her thirties.

The 65-year-old star accused her psychiatrist of being a gossip-hungry groupie who fed her high doses of valium to keep her coming back into his surgery.

Miss Nicks became addicted to cocaine for 10 years but following her treatment at the Betty Ford clinic in America in the 1980s she then started seeing a psychiatrist.

She said: ‘When I came out of Betty Ford I was in great shape and then I went to see the psychiatrist that everybody was seeing at that point and I think he was just a groupie.

‘He just wanted to put me on something that would bring me into his office whenever I was in town, once a week for an hour, so he could get all the scoop on what was going on in the rock and roll world.'

The star has been married once – to her best friend’s widower Kim Anderson after his wife, Robin, died from Leukaemia, however the couple split after eight months and she has not re-married.

The singer, who once had a brief relationship with band mate Mick Fleetwood, said she blames the doctor for her lack of a family.

Speaking on the Radio 4 Woman’s Hour programme, she said: ‘I say to people I’ve chosen not to have a boyfriend, I’ve chosen not to have kids, I’ve chosen to be an artist and follow my muse and all that and blah blah blah.

‘But during those eight years, that was late thirties to 45, who knows what might have happened during those eight years? I might have met someone, I might have even had a baby.

‘So I will go to my grave angry at that man [the doctor] for that, because he took eight years of the prime of my life away.’

In April, the band, whose only original member is Mick Fleetwood, began its first tour in three years with a concert in Columbus, Ohio.

On Monday Stevie appeared at the Fleetwood Mac party at The Arts Club, London alongside Mick Fleetwood and former Eurythmics musician David Stewart.

She dressed in her signature ethereal style, wearing a floaty sheer black top with cut-out shoulders teamed with chain-trimmed boots, leggings and turquoise gemstone jewellery.

Miss Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 – three years before the release of the band’s best-selling album Rumours, which sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.

The four-piece band, which comprises Miss Nicks, Fleetwood, Buckingham John McVie, will perform three gigs at the London O2 Arena from September 24.

Stevie also confirmed that singer Christine McVie is also set to rejoin Fleetwood Mac at two unspecified shows on their forthcoming European tour.

I know John is quiet, but sheesh.

Anyone know if this publication from the United Kingdom is considered to be of the gossipy kind, like the National Enquirer magazine in the U.S.?

He's technically not an original member of Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green formed the band and made Mick & John it's namesakes, hoping to lure John away from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. This stunt ended up working, of course. But John McVie, despite his namesake in the band, was not a founding member of Fleetwood Mac. He didn't join the band in an official, full time manner for some time after it was formed.

It is a tabloid, often called the Daily Fail, unfortunately it is read by many but it is known as a right-wing sensationalist rag.

Alas, Stevie finally tells the truth. I never bought that "married to my music/chosen to be alone" line at all. This may be the most truthful interview that she's ever given.

--Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame, and it sure sounds like she's blaming another person for choices that she, herself, might have made. How ... refreshingly upsetting.

See, the thing is, Stevie is a talented, legendary, 65-year-old woman who just can't leave well enough alone (no really, she can't; in one of her more recent interviews, Stevie claimed that Reese Witherspoon was "too old" to play Stevie in a Stevie biopic. Wrap your brain around that one for a hot minute).

Stevie just seems to have a hard time saying, "Yeah, I lived an amazing life, survived some pretty crazy stuff, made some really good choices, made some really bad choices, and at the end of the day, most things that happened to me were because of me." That'd be a normal thing for any reasonable person to say, right? And it's not too far a stretch of the imagination to consider the option that maybe -- just maybe -- Stevie's possible Valium addictions may have been, in fact, her own choice, and not the fault of her doctor. And if you could fathom that one for a minute, then you might be able to fathom the idea that if Stevie's addictions were her own fault, and not that of her prescribing physician's, then it might mean that Stevie is actually the one who screwed Stevie out of 8 years of possible motherhood.

Nobody's judging you, Stevie, but there is one thing that it seems you need to face up to -- and it's that not every single bad thing is the direct and only effect of one sole person. That's real talk right there. .

Totally agree! She only started saying that in recent years. She talked about wanting children & adopting for a long time.

michelej1 09-17-2013 11:39 PM

Yes, there was that time she said she would name the baby Lily Rachael or some such thing. Lillian?

I thought it was funny in Crossroads that Stevie told Hillary that she probably would have taken a year off if she'd gotten pregnant.

Lillian or Rebecca.

She told Jim Ladd that if she had a little girl, she would call her Sara. Of course, Sara is also "probably my alter ego."

This is what I've said for ages. One of the biggest parts of rehab is owning your behavior, accepting your addiction. Stevie has never accepted or owned her addiction to Klonopin... she's always offed the blame. I'll still never fully buy that she innocently sought a psychiatrist following her coke rehab, and he somehow tricked her into an opiate... one whose dose was taken for a decade, with ever ballooning doses. C'mon... she had to of known that wasn't legit or even okay. Since Stevie was then a veteran of rehab, she MUST have realized she replaced one addiction with another pretty quickly into her Klonopin stint. She either got wind of a Hollywood doctor who was liberal with tranquilizers for rock stars, or she simply turned a blind eye to the whole thing once she realized she was liking the opiates a bit too much. Either way, she had to of known a decade on Klonopin was just absurd.

For reference, I lived through a natural disaster several years ago where I lost most of my earthly belongings. It was a hugely stressful time in my life, and it was causing me to lose sleep, and my work performance to slip. I went to my doctor to see if I could be put on sleep meds just to get myself back into a normal rhythm. Instead, she prescribed me Klonopin. Let me tell you, you feel the effects of that stuff pretty quickly. You don't feel good at all on it... you feel like you have the flu or something. Headachy, no energy, your mind, body, and reactions are all blunted. All I could think about was how I wanted to stop taking it. As soon as I'd been on it long enough to reestablish my sleeping habits, I ditched the stuff. I cannot fathom staying on that garbage for a decade.

Oh. reallyyyyyy....... come on .....grow up... please !

Stevie...that's not the story you told a decade ago!!!
We take vallium for dental surgery and it is great!!!
But it's not for every day use, the poor dear woman is
all mixed up...so sad to read this trash! Very sad !!!

michelej1 09-22-2013 10:33 PM

This is what Stevie said in 1990. I also remember Mick saying that Stevie was planning on adopting as well.

Quote:

"I'm going to try to adopt a little girl in January when I'll have more time. I'm certainly ready for it and I'm good with children. And then I just may have one myself after that, if the right man walks into my life. I think I'll probably call her Lillian Rebecca. She'll be loved, and she'll be the most important thing in my life -- more than music, Fleetwood Mac, solo albums or anything else."
