There's no story, really. The band never went into the details. Stevie said,

Mick said that in the beginning, he would hear from Christine and she could have joined in the early stages of production, but then as they got farther along that became impractical and he told Lindsey, he didn't think Christine's involvement was going to happen. Then, in another interview he said that he would hear Christine and Lindsey talk on the phone and he didn't think it was going to happen. He didn't say what they were talking on the phone about.
