I think that great ending would be way too ambivalent for movie audiences today to understand,("I didn't get it. So what happened to him? Why didn't it have a happy ending? This movie sucked.") I saw an interview with Jack Lemmon and he talked aboput making this movie. He said he got so wrapped up in his character that he almost had a nervous breakdown in real life while making the movie. Remember the scene where he is giving the speech and he keeps seeing his buddies from the war sitting in the audience. Powerful stuff.

MUCH to my regret, I haven't been able to see it all the way through yet.
But I've seen enough to realize how good it is, including that scene
when he's hanging out with the young girl and playing a little "game"
where they're listing all these people from their lives - singers etc. -
and neither has heard of the other's heroes, and he gets very emotional.
VERY well done, i.m.o.
