SYW (the song) is very clearcut too. Some people don't like its unlayered quality. But I marvel at how easily she stepped up to the Christine plate when the situation called for it. And the simplicity of the words almost makes them more exquisite, because when you speak in language so unadorned, you seem to make yourself more vulnerable. I mean it's harder to do a Prufrock and say, "that's not what I meant at all" when your words aren't gauzy. There's so much less to hide behind, so many fewer ways to escape the pain of rejection, when you just lay it on the table in plain talk. So, when a love song is composed of that, it brings home both the charm and risk of romance.
I wouldn't want her to write like that all the time, but it certainly works for a change of pace. Michele
