It's from Tennyson, I think. Stevie may have been reading this Tennyson poem for many years before writing Affairs of the Heart. Plus, it's really a very common saying that everyone has stored away mentally somewhere--Stevie may not even be aware of the Tennyson connection.

I didn't notice this for years, but someone (David, I think) brought it up here a few months ago that poor Elaine's shins get banged into the stage pretty hard on the way up. OUCH! She didn't mean to mind, though. :laugh:
