Lindsey's vocals on Sisters Of The Moon - controversial...
Hey guys
I've watched the classic Mirage tour Sisters Of The Moon perrformance a few times oveer the past couple of weeks and one of the main parts that I really like is when Lindsey sings the few lines of the bridge. His vocals are great and really add something to the song. I'm starting to think that I'd have loved to hear him sing the same part on the studio version... thoughts? |
I wish I could remember where I read a review of
that performance. Possibly it was in Rolling Stone all those many years ago. Seems like they attributed Lindsey singing to Stevie's inability to complete the song due to the shape her vocals were in due to the length of the tour and her drug habit. Even with that, it's my favorite song of Fleetwood Mac's to ever be recorded on stage. |
I'm sorry to say this, but that's the only part of that performance that I don't like.

That doesn't make any sense (hardly unusual for Rolling Stone!) - if she couldn't complete the song then she surely would have vanished from the stage towards the end of the performance rather than take a brief break in the middle for 4 lines and then come back and do such crazy, shredding vocals for several more minutes until the song ended? Perhaps they're mixing it up with the time Lindsey had to take over the end of Silver Springs? |

Yes......... |
Aren't there earlier versions where he does that too?

I like that part as well. I wouldn't mind either way, but it's kind of refreshing to hear the male voice.

ETA not sure if "Illusions are her game" is grammatically incorrect, now that I look into it. The NYT ran a headline reading "crayons are her game." So I suppose it should be right. Sorry, Tusk-era Stevie! I still like "Illusion is her game" better. |

Oh well, I can't understand Stevie half the time anyway  |

In the Mirage video, at least, Lindsey sings "Some say illusion is her game." |

That part where Lindsey sings the bridge is extremely haunting to me. It adds another depth to the meaning of the song and gives the song another perspective. It's really cool to me how she leaves the stage and he starts to talk about her as if she's not there. It almost gives the song a story like quality...love it! Plus, he just sounds so damn good singing it. If they bring this one back on the next tour, I would love to see them do it this way again.

Maybe they just wanted to change it up?
Stevie sang the melody on the chorus of GYOW sometimes, did she not? It's a live setting, stuff can be changed. |

Lindsey is fine on SOTM. I'm always a supporter of Stevie & Lindsey singing on each others' songs (except when Lindsey doctors his voice, like on "Illume" and "Running through the Garden"). The interplay between the vocalists is a hallmark of FM.
It still kills me that "Crystal" was never recorded or performed as a duet. - Jake |

GoldDust, that was a cool video, thanks for posting. Some of those pics? I just kept staring at Lindsey's package. Nice!  |

I love the live versions of this song that I've seen. If on the next tour, FM starting playing SOTM, I would completely and totally lose my mind. I keep crossing my fingers with each tour. I think it's such an awesome live song.

I think the song was the highlight of the Mirage Tour and maybe even the Tusk Tour. Nearly thirty years later I'm afraid the song would become what Gold Dust Woman has. An inferior version making one long for yesteryear |

And I think some of the Mac's performances of GDW have been great in recent years...to me, it's a song that Stevie can still make great in concert. As for a song becoming inferior and making me long for yesteryear, I'd give that honor to Rhiannon any day over Gold Dust. |

was hard for her to do Rhiannon. Oh well, you can't stay young forever. She'd have to be a witch or something...??? |

I'd like to go on record and say this SOTM recording and performance was perfect. From the groovy Christine keyboards, to John's pumping bass intro. Mick's amazing chimes and drum sounds to Linsdey's finger pickin and lead riffs.
His vocals created that mysterious story tellin that picked up where Stevie left off. I love how she tries to play the percussive instrument and it gets caught in her gown near the sloppy video edit. I love the interplay between Mick and Stevie. And who doesn't love the vocal intensity Stevie delivers toward the end. In my opinion Stevie gets every other member to level up on this tune. I was left hanging with my mouth open when I saw this in hi fi stereo. Don't change a thing. Vote: Love him singing on this tune. |

Except for the horrible editing job. |

Sisters of the Moon (definitely one of my favourites of Stevie's) may sound good nowdays with a soft acoustic intro with piano something like the demo. She MUST sing the intro with a soft voice though:nod: and then into a rock version. Lindsey's guitar solo of the night must be on this song and not I'm So Afraid, and he must sing the line and let Stevie finish. Possibilities are there for live perfection.
