The Box Set? '25 Years ~ The Chain'

What are your fave things about this collection?

What songs stood out?

:)

louielouie2000 05-12-2011 12:56 AM

My fav part is the unexpected outtake/variations on the songs which were included. For instance, I just *love* the version of Tusk with the marching band intro.

kick.inside 05-12-2011 03:20 AM

LOVE SHINES.
That will be all.

wildheart048 05-12-2011 04:31 AM

I actually love all of the unreleased tracks...Love Shines and Heart of Stone stand out and of course, Paper Doll ... and all the Alt versions are cool...the absolute best being Gypsy ("I still see your bright eyes...I can't find you...") I don't think I've listened to the original version since this came out...

The negative about the set is the info...I wish it were more correct as to what is an alt version etc...

I agree. The version of Gypsy is great. One thing though, does anyone else think that the tracklisting is just weird?! Not the actual tracks, but the order?

Yes, I agree. I don't get it.

Recently released was a Rolling Stones singles collection with each single packaged in a box set w/ all b-sides and (re)mixes--in CHRONOLOGICAL order. Wouldn't it be amazing to have such a box set for Fleetwood Mac from Peter Green's to Say You Will?

Heartboy 05-12-2011 11:07 AM

Things I love are the extended version of 'Gypsy', adding 'Silver Springs' to the collection, 'Stand Back' live & 'Paper Doll'!! ;)

bluefox4000 05-12-2011 11:18 AM

My fav thing is probably Gypsy on here. Also on the Live stand Back. Am i the only one who thinks the keyboard part sounds overly white..if that makes sense. Is it Chris? There's....like.....no funk....or soul.....ugh forget it:lol:

Might be just me:laugh:

Liked: The "new" ("Love Shines", "Paper Doll", etc) & "outtake" ("Goodbye Angel", "Teen Beat", "Trinity", etc) tunes. The original 45 version of "Silver Springs". The 45 mix of "Say You Love Me".

Could've been better: Instead of including 90% of the '75 album & Rumours sucking up disc space, they could've included the Tango singles' B sides, more unreleased tracks from the pre-'75 incarnations.

I like...

Newer songs
Love Shines
Heart of Stone
Paper Doll
Make Me A Mask

B-sides/non album/unreleased tracks
Teen Beat
Silver Springs
Goodbye Angel
Trinity
String A Long

Alternate mixes
Lay It All Down
Isn't It Midnight
Angel
Gypsy
Beautiful Child
Gold Dust Woman
Brown Eyes - but not noted, along with a few others

Deep Album tracks
Crystal
That's All For Everyone
Oh Diane
Walk A Thin Line
Only Over You
Warm Ways
Storms
What Makes You Think You're The One
Eyes Of The World

Live Songs
Stand Back (questionable)
Not That Funny - the edit tightened it up

I also have a lot of criticism about the box set. Should that be in a new thread? I'll start it!

So am I the only one who isn't overly crazy about the extended version of Gypsy? It's my favorite song ever, but the extended version just doesn't do it for me. Maybe just becasue I haven't listened to it as much. Hmm.

Ohhhhhhhh yeah so my favorite Fleetwood Mac poster is an ad for The Chain (looks like this one http://bit.ly/j28cqD) so that's another favorite thing of mine - they had cool posters. Stupid, I know, but whatever.

While I like all the unreleased tracks, Love Shines is by far, the standout track on The Chain.

GoldDustWoman22 05-12-2011 08:06 PM

So this compilation sounds awesome! I was wondering should I get it now...or listen to all the original songs first and then get the collection?

Heartboy 05-12-2011 09:35 PM

Love 'Heart of Stone'! Stevie's backup harmonies are great! ;)

I have a question about 'Make Me A Mask'? Did Lindsey record this track with the band? Was this a song that would of been on a solo album?

From what I've read it was an unused track from the Out Of The Cradle sessions. So, it pretty much is just a Lindsey solo tune.

He DID do some vocal & guitar overdubs to "Paper Doll", even though it was the Behind The Mask incarnation that recorded the basic tracks.

I've never seen that poster; it is very cool. It should have been the cover of the box set. If Gypsy is your favorite song, why on earth wouldn't you like the extended version? Very strange, because it's exactly the same song without the edits -- just a bit more to it. It doesn't "do it" for you just because you haven't listened to enough? That's crazy talk!

I really liked the new stuff that appeared on the set. Not a huge fan of "Paper Doll" but I can't say that I don't like it. "Make Me A Mask" is alright I supposed. Doesn't really do much for me.

The "Beautiful Child" version is just phenomenal! I actually prefer it to the "Tusk" album version. "Goodbye Angel" is another great track. The remix of the live version of "I'm So Afraid" is horrible. The version of "Brown Eyes" on this set is actually better (in my opinion) than the "Tusk" version.

Just my humble opinions.

MacShadowsBall 05-13-2011 02:45 PM

I really enjoyed the box set, at least the 3 discs I bought used last year at FYE. It really helped to expand my Fleetwood Mac collection and branch out into the Pre-Rumours era.

Favorite "new" songs
Why
Love Shines
Station Man
Say You Love Me (single mix aka the "kick a**" version)
Need Your Love So Bad
Hypnotized
Beautiful Child

I think they could of done a better job of the booklet of photos!

CreepingDeath 05-14-2011 12:15 PM

For me, this box-set is worth it just for that fact that Heart of Stone and Love Shines is on it. Those two songs are in my top 10 Christine songs ever.

Wow, I never knew that Lindsey did work on Paper Doll. Was this done during the Tango sessions?

"Love Shines" and "Heart of Stone" were my two favorites from this collection.

No, 'Paper Doll' is from 1992. :)
