Which Stevie "Voice" is your Favorite?
This may be a weird question, but you know how Stevie's voice changed over time? Which is your favorite????
Examples: Buckingham Nicks (not too confident with her voice) Rumours (hitting high notes; very delicate) Bella Donna/Wild Heart(starts to get low...vibrato) Rock a Little/Tango( all of a sudden her voice got high again! And kind of youngish - "When I See You Again" and "Joan of Arc") Early 90s - low again The Dance----TISL---SYW(pretty strong) Unleashed/Crystal Visions(a tad higher) my vote is for Bella Donna/Wild Heart......love all her performances from then...but when i hear songs in the likeness of "Joan of Arc" her voice is haunting! I love it! |
I'd go for from Rumours right through until The Wild Heart era. Everything from the Rosebud Rhiannon, to the Tusk-doc Angel, The White Wing Dove Edge Of Seventees - her voice was GREAT!

Honestly, I like them all in their own special way!
However, I hate it when she doesn't put enough breath behind her sound and goes under pitch. That has happened at various points! |
Mirage - Wild Heart
|
Like others have said, I tend to like them all for their own merits.
That being said... I guess I'd have to chose Rumours if I could only pick one. She kind of sang from the back of her throat on that album, which gave her a tone which hasn't been seen before or since. |
It's a toss-up for me between "Rumours" and "Wild Heart". Her voice was quite something in the Rumours era...totally unique, capable of going from the delicate vocal of "Dreams" to the pyrotechnics of the live "Rhiannon" at that time. Her vocal on the original "Dreams" has never been topped IMO...it had a sexy, just-got-out-of-bed quality that totally suited the imagery of a conversation with an emotionally distant lover.
The Wild Heart era was the peak of "raspy voice" Stevie. The suppleness of the Rumours era was gone, but she made great use of her deepened lower range and was still able to hit some decent high notes. The vocal on the title cut was a tour-de-force and seems to be somewhat overlooked...it's rarely discussed on these forums. The only sign of trouble were the verses of "Nightbird" where her voice sank into her sinuses, foreshadowing the problems that would be more prominent on RAL. It's pretty amazing how her voice audibly changed on virtually every album. The only "steady state" periods that come to mind are FM's GH ("No Questions Asked") through TOSOTM and BTM, and TISL through SYW. |
I going with all of them as well. However, I am a sucker for Rosebud Rhiannon....and I like her young voice on Louisa Joy (Fritz)..it's just cute..lol
Her voice is one of a kind! I have always said, no matter when or where, I can pick that disitnct voice of hers out of a crowd! |
I'm gonna go out on the limb and say the Rock A Little era. I love the craziness of it all!!! The random wails during the concerts and everything! I love the RAL voice!!!

Tusk tour through Mirage.
|
I like Stevie's different voices at different times, for different situations.
Right now it's '95 to '01. But I'd probably say my favorite is '76-'77 |
RAL was pretty nice.
But i loveee hearing the SA bootlegs! And the TISL ones. Her voice is so strong to me during that time period, so that gets my vote. 94-01 |
For me, her voice was at its zenith from Bella Donna through Mirage. Tusk and The Wild Heart are close seconds.
|
I like Fritz all the way up to Wild Heart.....
|
I really donīt prefer her very young voice, which I hear the most on Silver Springs audio version. I love her low voice in those three new Timespace songs, and also on OSOTM or BTM album (include No Question Asked). And I donīt have to forget, she has amazing voice in Trouble In Shangri-la... awesome. And on Street Angel too... well letīs see... from ī87 to ī01 :).

Having become a fan of Stevie when Bella Donna was released, I remember going back and buying all the previous releases from Buckingham Nicks through FM Live, and though I loved the songs, Stevie's early voice esp. BN through Rumours was an acquired taste. I eventually grew to love it, but very much preferred the supple and gritty belting on BD to the fragile, soft tone's on 73'-77' recordings.
Tusk - Wild Heart was practically flawless for me. Stevie became more confident and bolder with each successive release. RAL - Tango was wild and unpredictable. Seven Wonders was the last thing she recorded in the studio before rehab...and was the end of this era of delectable screaming vocals. FM-GH (NQA) through BTM - the most boring and lifeless vocals eva'....cept for a few bright spots on "Long Way To Go" and "Doing the Best I Can" The Dance - Present are unique in their own way...I have learned to adapt and accept that Stevie's instrument is ever evolving, but her persona, charisma and unconventional songwriting style are timeless. This is why she has become a legend! |
White Album tour through the recording of Mirage.
I really can't pick just one era to be my favorite. I love the wails through out the white album tour. I love the high notes she could hit during Rumours. And then there's Angel and Sara for Tusk, and the perfection of the HBO Special for Bella Donna. Mirage gave us Gypsy and this is going without mentioning all of the incredible unreleased demos we have from these years. I love it all. |

White album to Mirage tour for me, with the emphasis on the Mirage tour.
|
I know this has been discussed many times but my favorite periods are 78-early 84 so that would be late Rumours /Tusk to early RAL (or what would've been the Mirror,Mirror period)....I esp love the Tusk-WH eras....thats the 'voice' I love as well as the style of stage clothes etc.....those were the times....not that I don't love others as well.....like others have said each has there on style for that time. But those are the times I love the most......:D:nod:

What does everyone think about her voice on the Enchanted tour? I think it should also be a separate category! It was different than The Dance, and much different than TISL. I think it was a lot stronger in 1998 than just prior and after.

I like all of Stevie's voices, everyone is unique.

Buckingham Nicks through to Mirage I'd say is how I enjoy her voice the most.. Have to admit I heartily dislike her voice on TISL..
|
I think all up to Wild Heart. BUT I love her RAL voice kinda very much too xD But I think between BN and WH xD

Personally, I prefer her Dance voice because it had more dynamics and nuance (really, the last we would hear of those types of vocal dynamics from Stevie). |
