Arctic Blitz 2007/Ice Storm/whatever it's called in your area ??

Things are looking bad for us right now - today was a holiday, but my boss just called me and said not to risk coming in tomorrow morning if it's icy, which it looks like it will be....the temp right now is 32, and it's gonna get lower overnight and thru Wed. Sleet and freezing rain on the way and possibly snow!!

I haven't gotten out of my jammies/sweats all weekend. I've got 3 fire logs left and I'm gonna save those in case I lose power...drinking lots of hot tea and just tryin' to keep warm.

What's going on in your neck of the woods? Stay safe, everyone!

There is an estimated 225,000 Oklahomans who have lost their electric, and still 122,000 without it at this time (7 people on the way from Arizona to North Carolina, died not far from here when their minivan skidded on ice, crossed the interstate median and was hit head-on by a semi-truck).

My hometown Muskogee was pounded by the ice, up to 4" (!!!) of it and the whole town lost power for a time over the weekend (Still 9,900 left in Muskogee without electricity). McAlester suffered the same fate, and is still without electricity.

The temp here is about 25 and will dip to 7 tonight, with windchills way below 0 (trust me, I was out in it today and it feels MUCH COLDER than the temperature makes it appear to be). Tomorrow night it will be even colder.

Sadly, the 6 PM news says another possible ice storm could be shaping up for this weekend (Which could be worse than the 1"-2" ice/sleet we received this weekend)...At least Deb is off this weekend so she wont have to stay the night over at the hospital as she did this weekend (We live 45 miles away from the hospital, and when the weather is bad I drive Deb to work & she stays over in patient rooms saved for employees during inclement weather.)

I can drive in the ice/snow/whatever, so I have no problems as others do...Hell, I was doing between 50-55 MPH today when most people in SUV's/pickups/hay bailers were driving about 30-40 MPH ( The only time you will see me driving faster than anyone is in winter weather...I am not intimidated by it.)

As long as I wont have to do anymore transmission work in the ice/sleet like yesterday I am happy (Thank God my Dad was an auto-mechanic of a higher caliber)

markolas 01-15-2007 08:15 PM

My workplace doesn't observe MLK, but we did close because of the ice. Looks like we may be closed tomorrow, too. I've basically just been playing Sims 2 all day...though tomorrow I'll probably be bored as hell.

amber 01-15-2007 09:05 PM

We're freezing too, California's farmers fear for the crops, etc. etc. It has been in the forties in the day, and late 20's/30's at night. Brrrrrrr!!!!

gldstwmn 01-15-2007 09:09 PM

17 degrees here with intermitent snow and just plain frozen.

It was 80 degrees in Savannah, GA today...had the A/C cranking! Too freakin' HOT! Can anyone say "Global Warming" ? :distress:

ryan8472 01-15-2007 09:47 PM

So far it's only raining here. And I'm praying that that's it. This weather had BETTER not disrupt my glorious return to college! :p

sara1998 01-15-2007 09:55 PM

Rain, rain, rain. I'm so sorry for the other states, but I'm glad we didn't get hit with it. Light flurries in the forecast for tonight, but that's about it.

goldustsongbird 01-15-2007 09:59 PM

I woke up to freezing rain and a bunch of snow...

JazmenFlowers 01-15-2007 11:10 PM

of course our meteorologists are going apeshizzz over any possible exciting weather news. so far, just rain.

It was 70 degrees here last week. I was running errands Friday nite without a jacket, and wearing sandals!

All the schools are closed tomorrow, including UT, which almost never happens. They're calling it a "conveyor belt of moisture," coming in over Mexico, until tomorrow evening. Since I'm gonna be cooped up another day, I wouldn't mind seeing some snow!

macfanken 01-16-2007 04:47 AM

It's been the winter from hell here... we've had a major storm almost every week. In November we had the rainiest month ever recorded, in December we had a snow storm and then the worst wind/rain storm in 10 years... leaving over a million people in the seattle area without power. Last week we had another major snow storm... the temps have been in the 20s ever since... today is the first day above freezing in 4 or 5 days. I think this is the same storm that is causing problems in the rest of the country right now. Weird weather.

DavidMn 01-16-2007 09:10 AM

We got about 7 inches of snow yesterday. And it's cold as hell right now! ABout -5 Fahrenheit!

sara1998 01-16-2007 09:20 AM

Well, so far, we have a dusting. It's still snowing, but they aren't predicting anything major. I had to bundle Sara up for the first time this winter. It's about 25 deg. with the wind chill around 15 deg.

Livia 01-16-2007 11:39 PM

Looks like tonight and tomorrow may be a little worse than last night and today. With our low temps, the roads (not just bridges and overpasses) are now getting ice accumulation, and the freezing rain/sleet isn't gonna stop until around noon tomorrow, so they say. We may get some snow overnight too. I'm getting cabin fever! I did go outside and walk around the neighborhood this morning, just after the really big snowflakes were falling, which was pretty, but it switched back to sleet after a few minutes.

No call from the boss today re: work tomorrow, but I'm assuming the same rules still apply, and I'll be staying home again.

estranged4life 01-17-2007 12:13 AM

Expecting...

between 3"-6" of snow on Saturday/Sunday, So winter continues here in OK (Thank God it is cloudy outside at this time or the temp would get very close to 0 tonight...Ah Oklahoma, near 0 in the winter, about 110 in the summer - Gotta love it!!!)

I feel for those 92,000 who are still without power at this time.

DrummerDeanna 01-17-2007 12:23 AM

It's been f**king COLD here. Right now it's -8 with a dewpoint of -26

wondergirl9847 01-17-2007 09:40 AM

Wow!

It is sneeting (snow/sleet) here today!! My mom woke me up at 7:40AM to tell me and it had already come down pretty heavy. Had to get up and take pictures/video. Hey, I live in Texas folks...this is rare.

I really feel for all the people who are without power. It SUCKS to not have power. :( Everyone stay warm and safe out there!

markolas 01-17-2007 10:59 AM

I am off work for the third day in a row due to this ice business. I am so ****ing bored right now. I may walk to Target.

Tarzay! I love that effin store.

we have gotten not a damn drop. to the north and south of us are getting some, but we haven't. they say it may sleet some today, but I don't think it will. I'm so pissed. I want some days off work!

SuzeQuze 01-17-2007 11:26 AM

We didn't get the ice, it was supposed to come Tuesday but it missed us. Today it is 11 here in Boston. The ocean partially froze over night.

BTFLCHLD 01-17-2007 11:29 AM

All I know is I live in California and it is as cold as witches tits here. For the past three nights I have worn two pairs of pjs and socks. :p

estranged4life 01-17-2007 12:37 PM

Well...

there were some snow flurries this morning, and again it is cloudy outside (Thank God for that).

The sleet on the ground this weekend has turned into a "hard ice-rink" like setting. It very slippery just going out to retrieve the mail from the mailbox (I used the rake and cross-patterned a path to the mailbox & to the trashbin to avoid either Debbie or myself biting the wenie on the ice)

The weather forecast keeps changing because the latest (Before the upcoming Noon broadcasts) is that this coming weekend will be worse than last weekend...God I love winter!!!

Livia 01-17-2007 01:30 PM

Just heard that 6000 people here are without power due to more ice accumulation on trees over power lines. I flipped when I saw the tree in my front yard this morning - yesterday, the ice was just on the tops of the branches - now they are fully encased in ice. Icicles around my roof are longer today and there appears to be ice on my driveway, yesterday it was just wet. I'm gonna bundle up and check out the neighborhood again, and then take a nice, hot bath!

Our temp is supposed to get above freezing today...we'll see....

a friend of mine told me that the only thing in Austin that was open was Wal-Mart..."even Starbucks is closed"

and I thought of you. take care!

estranged4life 01-17-2007 06:23 PM

The news...

just showed a stat that there is still 90,000 people in Oklahoma today without power, Most in the rural districts will be without power for the coming weeks (Some could possibly be without power for months, as was the case during the 2002 ice storm).

I feel for those folks, 'cause this approaching storm front (Which is over Los Angeles at this moment) this weekend will dump between 5"-10" of snow onto the already frozen ground.

It will be awhile before anything thaws out in these here parts...Just think, in a couple of months it will be tornado season.

amber 01-17-2007 06:39 PM

Most of Cali's citrus and avocado crops - froze, ruined.
Farmers lose billions and all that. :(

Yeah. I was watching that on the news last night. That's a disaster. Produce is going to be expensive for a while.

This morning they reported milk with be on the $$ rise as well due to the lack of natural feed from farm fields. Cows will be feed purchased hay which is apparently on the $ rise too. :distress: Of course, this is cali so I would imagine there are even worse issues elsewhere.

gldstwmn 01-18-2007 01:48 PM

Well the sun is shining here today even though it's only 24 degrees. I think I'll make it another day.

estranged4life 01-18-2007 01:50 PM

Hay...

is the most sought after item for ranchers in this part of the US.

What's worse is that the drought had already made hay scarce, but the winter blast has made it even more rare. Ranchers are selling off their herds since it is less expensive than trying to obtain hay/feed for the herds.

Today is the first day since last Thursday/Friday that the temp has been above freezing, Too bad that will be short lived.

I saw that. How awful. It's pretty cold here (yesterday I think the high was 25 or something, low at night around 10), but I'm used to it. I feel bad for you guys who aren't. :xoxo:

Livia 01-18-2007 02:06 PM

We're starting to thaw - the ice and icicles coming off the roof of our office sounds cool - and it looks like it's raining, w/ everything dripping. However, anything turning liquid now could re-freeze tonight.

But, damn, why don't people thaw their vehicles before driving them? I saw giant sheets of ice flying off rooftops and hoods of vehicles going over 35 mph. I was smart enough to keep my distance, and lucky I didn't get hit w/ anything!

:wavey: *brrrrrrr! I actually have to wear something other than a tank top in my house in the winter! *

It's not that bad, we're not dying. For me it's like the winters in the place i grew up, and I hardly think 35 degrees or so will kill me.
But since we grow so much produce compared to other states, that part does suck really hard. That is gonna cost us.
It has been really sunny and clear, though, so that is pleasant.

35 degrees is virtually a heatwave for me!! I love reading these boards but a combination of the time difference and the logistics of getting a decent internet connection between here and the UK (where my internet provider is)make it pretty impossible for me to post. However I'm just about to leave for work and it is just around minus 25 degrees now (out of the wind). It will get a bit colder in a few hours time. You just don't know what cold is!

S

Does Stevie get played any further North than this?

No, I've never experienced that kind of cold. WOW! Stay warm!
