funeral songs
I apologize, first, for being morbid...but I've been thinking and I am almost sure I want the following played at my funeral or whatever I have:
Sand - The Lovemongers (aka Heart) Goodbye My Friend - Linda Ronstadt (still up in the air due to cheese factor) Meet Me On the Moon - Phyllis Hyman Rhiannon...since it's my favorite song of all time..ever yours? |
Umm... seeing how I'll be dead when it happens, I don't really care.
Also... since (I'm hoping) the event is many years away, who knows what music I'll be into by then. This whole Fleetwood Mac thing could very well be a phase. Maybe I'll end up being a Britney Spears fan? Or Celine Dion? You never know, you never know. |

I've already told my family I want this played at my funeral:
I am sailing.....by Rod Stewart. |
Hmmm...
"It Wont Rain All the Time"-Jane Siberry
"Dreaming Neon Black"-Nevermore "Storms"-Fleetwood Mac "Cemetery Gates"-Pantera "Estranged"-Guns'N'Roses And since I have a sense of humor: "Ode to Tipper Gore"-Warrant (This would definitely have to be played if my funeral was to take place at a church) |

I want Enya, Air and Moby to play. I just want easy listening mood music to put everyone in a mood...then I want everyone to get really drunk and toss my ashes in Europe somewhere.
|
I will have Return to Sender by Elvis played at my funeral
|
My mother once told me she wants Memory (from Cats, by Babs) played. Is that the title? Anyway, even though my mom is still alive (thankfully), I get teary eyed when I hear that song. We played Sailing by Christopher Cross at my dad's funeral because it was his absolute favorite song. Now, *my* funeral? I don't know. Cheesy as it my sound, I've always had a soft spot for The Dance by (GASP) Garth Brooks.
|
Great Gig In The Sky - Pink Floyd
Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix There's A River - Steve Winwood High Hopes - Pink Floyd :wavey: I'd want the wake/reception in a strip bar with champagne, cigars, a cold buffet, exotic dancers and sausage rolls. All funerals must have sausage rolls.. Somebody might as well have a good time. Its not like I'll be stuck will the invoice. |
Serious Songs:
"God's Garden" by Stevie "Songbird" by The Mac "You Gave Me A Mountain" by Elvis If I decided to get humorous, I'll play "Please Don't Bury Me" by John Prine |
The three modern songs that I've seen played the most at funerals are:
Vince Gill - Go Rest High on That Mountain(I've heard this one at like 5 funerals) Garth Brooks - The Dance Lee Ann Womack (?) - I Hope You Dance(is that the title?) I'm with Tynan though, I like Return To Sender! |
A Song For You - The Carpenters
My cousin died back in 1995. He was 28 and he had leukemia and he planned how he wanted his funeral. The songs her chose were: Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong Everybody Hurts - REM |

"Goodbye Baby" - FM
Don't take me to the tower And take my child away T'was I who was the hourglass And the sands of time like Shattering glass went past me Like a tunnel to the sea And I who went to sleep as two Woke up as one now only you remain You'll close your eyes and travel back To the time when the light went fading fast And the words you'll never, never forget, oh no As you slipped away Goodbye baby I hope your heart's not broken Don't forget me Yes I was outspoken You were with me all the time I'll be with you one day And I who went to sleep in tears Woke up in tears, for all of the years And I who never, never said goodbye As I slipped away Goodbye baby I hope your heart's not broken Don't forget me Yes I was outspoken You were with me all the time I'll be with you one day Yes, I'll be with you one day "You'll Never Know" - Barbra Streisand You'll never know just how much I miss you You'll never know just how much I care And if I tried, I still couldnt hide my love for you You ought to know, for havent I told you so A million or more times? You went away and my heart went with you I speak your name in my ev'ry prayer If there is some other way to prove that I love you I swear I dont know how You'll never know if you dont know now You said good-bye, the stars in the sky refused to shine Take it from me, its not fun to be alone With moonlight and memories... You went away and my heart went with you I speak your name in my evry prayer If there is some other way to prove that I love you I swear I dont know how You'll never know if you dont know now "I Never Knew You From the Sun" - The Innocence Mission What a time it was Was befriended and was a friend For the longest while You were here And I never knew you from the sun Snow is on the ground This is not my landscape now Where I find myself Without you Oh I never knew you from the sun Oh I had a friend I had a friend I loved Now I walk for miles Into dark forests of piano sounds I'm lost.... Deep into my sleeve Deep in my sleeves Pockets start where I always reach You are there Oh I never knew you from the sun Never, never knew you from the sun "Company" - Rickie Lee Jones I'll remember you too clearly But I'll survive another day Conversations to share When there's no one there I'll imagine what you'd say I'll see you in another life now, baby I'll free you in my dreams But when I reach across the galaxy I will miss your company Company I'll be looking for company Look and listen Through the years Someday you may hear me Still crying for company So now you're going off to live your life You say we'll meet each other now and then But we'll never be the same And I know I'll never have this chance again No, not like you So, I'll see you in another life now baby, I'll free you in my dreams But when I reach across the galaxy I will miss your company Company I'll be looking for company Look and listen Through the years Someday you may hear me Still crying for company... |
My songs would have to be
"Immortality" by the Bee Gees/Celine Dion "Landslide" by Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac |

I've seen him twice: once at the Ryman in Nashville, and once at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville. Both shows were just terrific! If you anyone on the board has a chance to see him you definitely should. :D |
One more to add...
would be the 42 minute epic "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" by Dream Theater (Which is divided into 8 parts)
Part I-Overture Part II-About to Crash Part III-War Inside My Head Part IV-The Test that Stumped Them All Part V-Goodnight Kiss Part VI-Solitary Shell Part VII-About to Crash Part VIII-Losing Time/Grand Finale I have good/bad memories of this song in 2003/2004, It was constantly played when Deb was in the hospital during her bout with cancer & septis...I can clearly remember driving home from the hospital daily, and when "Part VIII-Losing Time/Grand Finale" would be playing I would be on the verge of tears wondering am I going to lose my loving wife. Maybe someday those who attend my funeral will hear this classic progressive rock/metal classic. |
Some of my choices might be:
In My Life - The Beatles Let The Good Times Roll - The Cars Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin Champagne Supernova - Oasis In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd Message Of Love - The Pretenders Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads This Must Be The Place - Talking Heads Beautiful Day - U2 Bad - U2 I'd tell whoever was in charge to play their favorite 3 or 4 out of those. |
I want the Ode to Joy from the Ninth of LVB sung at my funeral. If there is any cash left, I want Kathleen Battle in the Soprano part
and I also want "Into the West" sung, to wit: Lay down Your sweet and weary head Night is falling You’ve come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping [Chorus] What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say: «We have come now to the end» White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping [Chorus] And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West SHEEBUS! |
IT'S A DREAM: Neil Young
In the morning when I wake up and listen to the sound Of the birds outside on the roof I try to ignore what the paper says And I try not to read all the news And I'll hold you if you had a bad dream And I hope it never comes true 'Cause you and I been through so many things together And the sun starts climbing the roof It's a dream Only a dream And it's fading now Fading away It's only a dream Just a memory without anywhere to stay The Red River stills flows through my home town Rollin' and tumblin' on its way Swirling around the old bridge pylons Where a boy fishes the morning away His bicycle leans on an oak tree While the cars rumble over his head An aeroplane leaves a trail in an empty blue sky And the young birds call out to be fed It's a dream Only a dream And it's fading now Fading away It's only a dream Just a memory without anywhere to stay An old man walks along on the sidewalk Sunglasses and an old Stetson hat The four winds blow the back of his overcoat away As he stops with the policeman to chat And a train rolls out of the station That was really somethin' in its day Picking up speed on the straight prairie rails As it carries the passengers away It's gone Only a dream And it's fading now Fading away Only a dream Just a memory without anywhere to stay It's a dream Only a dream And it's fading now Fading away It's only a dream Just a memory without anywhere to stay It's a dream Only a dream And it's fading now Fading away |

On a personal note - I was kind of asked to sing this at a funeral and I have to say I do not know if I could get through it. Fortunately, the person who asked me shows no signs of slowing down! |
I always wanted "Gyspsy" played at my funeral
I always wanted "Never Have I Been A Blue Calm Sea, I Have Always Been A Storm" printed on my Gravestone! |

So, the song I want played at my funeral? Probably Cyndi Lauper's Above The Clouds. There’s a place where the sun breaks through And the wind bites cold and hard Stings my ears and Tears my eyes When the day starts to shout out loud Stand tall And glide When you’re all alone in the crowd Don’t fall Don’t hide When you walk above the clouds When the light is against your face And your smile is soft and sound That’s when you tell me all your fears and all your dreams So proud Stand tall And glide When you’re all alone in the crowd Don’t fall Don’t hide When you walk above the clouds I try and tell you to keep your head upright Don’t swing your sword and shield against the night Don’t block your blessings, boy You don’t have to fight Stand tall And glide When you’re all alone in the crowd Don’t fall Don’t hide When you walk above the clouds C. Lauper |
