This is the Gypsy demo I was talking about with the Lindsey backing vocals.

This doesn't start until 25 seconds in..

This is really cool....I love to hear them working the song out while they're running through it. That's the thing I like about demos and outtakes so much...the insight into the process. Thanks, again!

Now, if we just could get Stevie to understand that!

Thanks so much for posting these. This version has more of sense of sadness. It must be because of the simplicity of it. Thanks!

I know it....there is a slight guilt-factor there, b/c I know how she feels about it. I just think she wants to give us the best, most complete, whatever...but we LOVE every little nuance and grunt...she probably just can't believe that!

Most of the demos of Gypsy aren't very good but I do love this one. It's cool hearing them work through the song and I like Lindsey's backing vocals.

CrystalVisions 10-05-2005 10:33 AM

I love this. What really stands out on this, to me, is how good Stevie and Lindsey's voices are together. They sound so amazing. Thanks so much for sharing this! :wavey:

I will never forget you playing this for me in Madison as we were leaving Best Buy or Circuit City buying that camera - my jaw was on the floor at the sound of it. Then, FF to the Stang convt. in Detroit and we were belting it withy the top down on the way to the concert after a day a fabulous shopping

My fav. is when LB holds the "AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" for song long

dissention 10-05-2005 12:27 PM

If I'm not mistaken, this isn't a demo, it's from the Mirage tour rehearsals (at least that's how it was labeled when I got way back when). It was on an old cassette that someone had and converted two or three years ago. The same cassette also had Sara and Joan of Arc, amongst other things.

Perhpas true - but why wpuld she say she needed to hear more of what LB was doing - which hints that she was at the mic with the headphones on and they needed to elevate the level of his prerecorded vocal. If she were on stage, she seemingly could hear him and did not use an IED then.

As an aside, LB's quick Bow Bow Bow Bow Bow's went from a vocal to a guitar riff - which is very cool.

It could be one or the other, David would most likely know.

I would LOVE for them to have done it like that on stage

I love it! my absolutely favorite Stevie song ever!!

ragandbone 10-05-2005 04:51 PM

Lindsey's really showing some Beach Boys love here! I am with Stevie: I wanted to hear more Lindsey too.
Thanks for posting this, I also really enjoy hearing the songwriting and producing process in all of these earlier versions of songs.

I enjoyed that part of the Rumours classic albums Doc, where they broke down parts of songs and talked about decisions for mixing. It would be cool to hear Stevie play parts of demos, and then talk abuot choices she made in completing a song.

UndoingTheLaces 10-05-2005 04:54 PM

Gypsy is one of my all time favorites. I remember taping the video version off of the TV and just wishing they would release it. I don't know why they didn't. The whole part at the end about "your bright eyes, I can't find you" just breaks my heart. And I never give Lindsay enough props, so here I am saying that his guitar solo at the end is just breathtaking.

I really liked the one they put on the Chain but was a little dissapointed that there were two small Stevie vocals that were not mixed in for some odd reason. I finally got an mp3 of the video version in stereo and I'm a happy boy now.

Have you guys ever heard the demo where the beginning vocal is really different but the ad lib at the end is the one they used in the finished recording? It's really neat. It's very stripped down, just the organ, bass and drums I think, no background vocals yet. And you can really hear her voice in it. Very cool stuff. I used to have it on a cassette but not sure if I do anymore. I've lost a few of my cassettes over the years. I'll have to see if I still have it.

bikerchic 10-05-2005 05:26 PM

I can't stop listening to it. Thanks again for posting that. I want me some more Lindsey Loven! It really makes me want some more Buckingham Nicks. I just love how Stevie is around him. She always seems unsure of herself and needs Lindsey's assurance (not just in this demo, but back in the day). It's just the whole big strong man protecting his woman thing. I always feel this way when I listen to those two working together. I know, I'm a romantic at heart. Okay you can stop puking now

Alexbt 10-05-2005 07:16 PM

Who said his vocal was prerecorded? This was probably done live in the studio. Could have been on stage though. Stevie could have wanted more of him in her monitor.

I don't really like it... Lindsey is clearly just getting some ideas out that he never ended up using. ;)

Serrart 10-05-2005 07:40 PM

Is it the one where Stevie asks: "I need to hear more Lindsey... what he's doing" or something like that?

Romy

Wild_Heart03 10-05-2005 07:43 PM

Oh wow.... love love LOVE it. "Gypsy" is my fave of Stevie's FM stuff. :xoxo:

I love this! Thanks for posting. I wish someone would post a daily demo song for those of us who have not heard them all!

Macfanforever 10-05-2005 09:35 PM

Awesome, thanks, I don't remember this one. I love this version. I notice at the end , I hear the start of Sara.

Kelly 10-06-2005 08:05 AM

Thank you so much Danielle! I used to have this but lost it in some file someplace. Gypsy is on of my all time favorite LB produced Stevie songs.

I agree, Theresa. I hear the same thing when SnL work together. She always seems to want to please him or make him proud and we see a side of her in this type of environment that most people do not believe she has. She does look to him for assurance and confidence. I see it all over the DR doc and comments she made during TISl about her demos. She told that story about giving LB the demos and him calling her and telling her he liked them a few times. She also tells the story of how he got tears when he heard Illume. One of my favorites is her quote about the entire TISL album when she says he told her it was the "best thing she had ever done". She seems to want him to like and respect her work and tell her he is proud of her so much. It is an interesting dynamic. (I also like how LB would stick up for her and defend her work, even when they were at odds. The Dreams quote comes to mind when Christine sort of called the song boring, with two chords or something and LB said "she knows the RIGHT two chords and we will make it into something beautiful".

I am loving this demo. I just listened to it five times in a row. The bump, bump, bumps are so cute!

I just did the link for Gypsy and it's working for me. The OSOTM masters have been downloaded so many times that is why those links aren't working.

I guess it is the accountant in me...just gimme the "bottom line", I don't need to see "your work in progress".
