Band Face Off - Round 6

It was a close round, but you prefered a band with an Appetite For Destruction, over the Master Of Puppets or big-haired bands Living On A Prayer.
Guns N Roses win with 14, beating Bon Jovi's 12 votes and Metallica's 10 votes.

So for Round 6. Three bands that gained success in the 70s and 80s, with more than their fair share of girl power. Which is your favourite?

Remember to defend your choice!

Results so far:

Round 1: Petty defeats Springsteen - 35 to 17

aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to be loyal and think of all the first songs I knew and loved and heard all the time, and how Magic Man captured my imagination from...well, I can't remember not hearing all those songs..

dissention 09-26-2005 01:53 PM

You're one evil bitch, Sharon. :p

I *looooooove* all three, but there's no contest. Blondie all the way. Creatively, they blow away the competition. The Pretenders come in right behind them, though.

DavidMn 09-26-2005 01:54 PM

Blondie- I remember seeing them in the rain for free in Minnesota back in 2002. Fabulous. Debbie kept on like a trooper!!!

I do my best. :D
I told you I had something special planned for Blondie.

I could have sowrn that I had a bootleg from 2002 in Minnesota when you mentioned that concert before and I haven't been able to find it. Maybe I was mistaken, who knows.

Did they play Golden Rod at that show? They desperately need to bring that one back.

CreepingDeath 09-26-2005 01:58 PM

The Pretenders

I don't really like any of them a great deal, but Chrissie Hynde is a cool bitch.

Yes she is

I vote Heart - though I LOVE the other two and could just as easily vote for them were it not for Nancy's voice, which is one of the best there ever was.

You meant to say Nancy? Not Ann?

ryan8472 09-26-2005 02:09 PM

You can't be serious. Blondie, Heart or Pretenders!?

I had to vote for Blondie tho. I listen to them more than the other two. That's the only thing I could go on in the decision process. :p

Blondie, though all three are fabulous.

how can that be a long story?? Oh, right, it's you....
anyway, we rock, we picked Heart. :woohoo:

Richard B 09-26-2005 02:16 PM

I like them all. Very hard choice here...but I decided to go with Blondie because I listen to more of their stuff than the other 2 and also that I met D. Harry personally.

Richard B 09-26-2005 02:26 PM

Funny you should ask...yes, she was a bit incoherent. She had quite the clammy hands...heroin days?

Anyway...it was during a private promotion for her solo release Def, Dumb & Blonde. A group of us loaded up on a yacht for the night in SF and floated around the bay area. She peformed a set on the boat (which was swaying all over the place). She wore a black leotard with a cat tail and was pretty amazing. Sang solo and Blondie songs...oh the Rapture of it all. I was standing right next to her. No place really else to be. Very small and tight and not designed as a stage. After the performance, talked a bit about her Rockbird album with her. She was cool even though a bit wasted.

skcin 09-26-2005 02:29 PM

Heart for me. No contest.

That is WAY COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have heard many "she is demanding drugged out diva bitch" sotries by people who have worked with her - some of it along the lines of "WAKE UP DEBBIE - HERE'S A BUMP - TIME TO GO ON STAGE - " Her performance at this years Night of 1000 Stevie's certainly did little to lessen that rumor  But, I like if not love her stuff.

Those outfits she wore back then were insane, I wish there was a pic of that particular one. I don't think she was doing heroin at that time, though, so it must have been something else. Cool story.

The most I ever got was to briefly shake hands with her and Roy Nathanson after a Passengers concert. If I ever got to actually meet her, I'd pass out and have to be revived.

Neal 09-26-2005 02:33 PM

Heart. The other 2 are just ok, imho...

Dreammms 09-26-2005 02:35 PM

I choose Blondie. Love Debbie's voice and stage presense. Not really a fan of Heart. I do like the Pretenders.

Now I'm in LA and worked a good year at Obey Giant for artist Shepard Fairey and he created this gorgeous Harry screenprint:
http://www.obeygiant.com/popup.htm?m...ebbieharry.jpg

Keep in mind his screenprints are limited to only 300 and they are signed and numbered. This screenprint is still available here:
http://www.obeygiant.com/main.php?page=posters

Enjoy!

That's hot, I'm buying one. Should go good with all of the other Blondie **** I have all over my office.

I'm going to get the Bea Arthur sticker, too. EDIT: Eek, the stickers aren't for sale. Dammit.

LiquidBlue5000 09-26-2005 02:51 PM

really really tough to choose.. I went with "Heart", only because I feel Ann Wilson is just an awesome vocalist and her voice is still just as solid now as it was 20, 25 years ago.. Can't really say the same for Deborah Harry.. although, i do love Debbie as well

I predict Diss will now respond with something about the fact that La Harry's voice is as good as it was, and may even be better.

Richard, I'm sure I've heard that cool story before.

LOL - I never really thought she had that great of a voice live - though and again, I like her.

Well, having seen her perform live thrice times in the past 6 years, I can say without a doubt that her voice is no where near where it once was...

I like it better now because it's richer and more flexible, but it's a matter of opinion. I think it's a better instrument than it was twenty years ago, especially on the Jazz Passengers material.

You're gonna love it. It's really, really a great piece.

He did a a few large format 3x4' format too of Harry for a kick ass show in LA last year. It was sold for 2K. It was unbelievable. The paper, the piece was a true original.

Yes! Were you there too? I was off forums for a long time after Burnish closed. Then found my way here and recognized some of you from burnish. I went by 'LoveBug.'

And I do recall telling that story there as well. It was quite an experience.

Two grand?!

There's a shop here in Boston that sells all kinds of movie memorbilia and when I was there last year, I found the old lightbox promo for her KooKoo album. Brand new in the box, never taken out for use, but it didn't have a price on it. I waited a week for the owners to look at it and price it, and they called me to tell me they wanted $1,700 for it. I obviously didn't pay that ridiculous amount and I ended up getting it off of eBay back in March for $20 shipped. The guy I bought it from even threw in a stack of promo CDs and acetates for "No Exit" and "Curse" for nothing.

I used to post there a little but not often. Lovebug, I remember you now!
I thought that story sounded familiar!
Wow, Burnish seems so long ago now.

The Pretenders, it's the band I've been listening to the most among those three. Besides Chrissie Hynde is a class act.

Yeah...2K. It is a fine art piece. He only handmade a few of them and they are slightly different from one another, but with using the stencil of Harry then building on top of that.

The one for sale is a screenprint, so it has some texture to it. Screenprints are such a fascinating process and a lot of work. Let me know what you think when you get it! And look forward to a lot of compliments from peeps who see it. Shepard Fairey is an artist to collect. Once the original 300 are gone, they're gone. No re-runs will ever happen. Some of his earlier pieces that you could buy for $30. and are now long sold out have gone into the thousands in value.

gldstwmn 09-26-2005 03:29 PM

While I love Chrissie and Debbie, Ann's got the pipes. I was watching Cal Jam 2 the other night and Heart was hot, hot, hot. Ann was wearing boots with higher heels than Stevie's. And I've got to give props to Nancy as well. Their set was a true snapshot of rock and roll in that time period. Their lead guitarist was plaing a 12 string, Nancy an acoustic and the stage clothes were fantastic. Not to mention Ann was hitting high notes that made my hair stand on end.
