Coldplay trying to top U2?

Whats up with Chris Martin and his ego trip about trying to become bigger than U2..? Anyone have any idea where that is coming from? It's making me not like the front man. I mean, sometimes competition is healthy, to a certain degree.

I think U2 is in a class all it's own. I don't think anyone can touch what they've done. You might not agree with that statement, but there's no arguing the fact that those four Irishmen conquered the world.

I am a fan of Coldplay, but I was also disappointed with the new album. I feel they didn't take a step forward, but they also didn't take a step back. Plowing their sound into the ground so to speak. Ah well. What the hell do I know anyway.

I don't know. Can't blame him for having a goal. I mean, why would you expect him to say, "hey, I wanna be big - but not as big as U2."

DrummerDeanna 06-20-2005 11:42 AM

It's bad news when any band makes a statement like that...like when Oasis claimed that they were or were goign to be bigger than the Beatles...uh where are they now??

NaiveMelody23 06-20-2005 11:45 AM

I dont know, but i do not get the same vibe. The band itself shoots of u2 stardom vibes, but i really dislike Bono, so elts hope Chris doesnt try to outbeat him

ShangriLaTroubl 06-20-2005 12:17 PM

They were advertised in a commercial for their tour or something the other day on Dave FM as "a band critics are hailing as the new U2"

Ughh, they wish lol

Chris

Playing a sell out UK tour... Plus, unusually they sold out Madison Square Garden in 90 minutes.. Maybe they will get it right in America this time.. Unlike the Formula One World Championship.. :distress:

U2 are the most overhyped band ever in my opinion...

WizNicks 06-20-2005 01:04 PM

They may be like the new U2, but losing the #1 in England because of a crazy frog is also something that they wont add in their 4-pages biography!

Ah - didn't know they were still around - but STILL they are not and will never be on par with The Beatles...:p

No they won't ever be The Beatles.

But The Beatles were overrated in my opinion too (sorry Chili!) apart from George that is...

I have a major soft spot for Oasis, and their new album is great. They're playing a few shows in the U.S. (Chicago tonight!) and they pretty much sold out big venues across the board. Mainly, I love to hear me some Noel rants, like today's:

http://bestweekever.blogs.com/best_w...ates_ever.html

I really dislike Coldplay. There are three or four songs of theirs that I LOVE (Yellow, The Scientist, Don't Panic)- but I find them to be so off-putting and... well, boring. I work part-time in the music department at a bookstore, and every time I put that album on to try and understand what the big ****ing deal is, I practically fall asleep before I can start to contemplate it.

I think I'm the only one who ****ing hates Coldplay (on edit: I notice Hayley is in my camp a bit). Talk about overrated, my gawd.

xdreamsunwindx 06-20-2005 02:37 PM

I hate Coldplay. Like, a whole lot. I love "In My Place" and "Trouble," but I cannot stand them other than that. I think they're vastly overrated. The fact that anyone can compare them to U2 even slightly is a ****ing joke, in my opinion. Coldplay's music just puts me asleep. It's so.. tiring.

mylittledemon 06-20-2005 02:48 PM

Nice thoughts from everyone. I dont know how you can dislike Bono. The guy uses his fame to try and help people across the globe. How many musicians do that? He has a genuine love of people stricken with AIDS and the hungry and dying in Africa.

I will admit, sometimes he sticks in his nose a little too deeply into politics...and it makes me wanna say "Bono, just shut up, and sing your music and make great records." But I think the man is doing what he feels led to do, and that's use his fame for the better of others.

On a side note, Bono said he thinks The Killers will be as big as U2 (or something to that effect).

Oh GOD, let's hope not. -_-

I don't know why I ever liked them. They're so.. mallpop. Fake new wave. Lame.

That? Makes me laugh.

I like The Killers as much as the next person. For now. Give me a week or so, I'll be sick of them. They lack a little depth. And how about we get another album before we decide they'll be as big as a band that's been around for decades, mmkay?

He said the same thing about Franz Ferdinand (who I hope are as big as U2) and gushed over them at the Grammy's. Bono's a twat. I loved it a couple of weeks ago when he gushed over Dubya's wit and dedication to AIDS and Africa.

On another note, I ****ing hate The Killers as much as I hate Coldplay.

Coldplay is *eh* but since day 1, it's been obvious they've been striving for the U2 sound. Didn't know they were trying to actually be U2. Insecure much, Coldplay? Get your own sound, your own groove, your own style and stop copying your idols.

Bitchy mood today..

I thought the same thing when I read it. I like Coldplay, but they still have to survive at least other 20 years to start making comparisons.

toooo funny, i loved oasis when they 1st came out, & the statement they made was so ignorant of them~ i stopped listening them, becaues it seems their onstage antics & in-fighting between the brothers were ridiculous you heard more about that than any new music from them  ~

Hmm. Well, I thought Gwyneth and Chris used the "apple of my eye" excuse?

dreamongypsydkm 06-20-2005 08:42 PM

It's true that Chris Martin is influenced by U2. I read somewhere that he played "A Sort of Homecoming" for his daughter Apple every day before she was born. And then I read in the Entertainment Weekly with them on the cover (the cover says "The Next U2?") that their new album is supposed to be like "The Unforgettable Fire", a statement which I couldn't disagree more with. I don't hate them, but what a ridiculous comparison! Chris Martin hasn't come close to achieving the same recognition as Bono.
Oh, and Bono says a lot of things - he thinks The Killers and Franz Ferdinand will become the next U2. He's high, in my opinion.
To say there will be another U2 is ridiculous. Things shouldn't be compared like that.

THAT must be why they're charging close to $80 for tickets! I couldn't believe it when I tried to get tickets for their tour this summer... I was expecting the tickets to be about $30. Totally outrageous!
