I agree with all of your saddest, especially POTU. Let's throw in Mistaken Love as well.

None of your happy choices seem happy to me. They're all about reflecting on break-ups in a bittersweet way, IMO.

Again, I can see Juliet as happy, but none of the others seem very happy to me.
And IMO Nightbird doesn't strike me as very sad in relation to the tragedy of some of Stevie's songs. Can you explain your picks?

Destiny Rules does not sound happy to me. Can you explain the pick?
I agree about Storms. When I first heard it, I thought the "another test" line was "a matter of death."

This is hard because a lot of times Stevies lyrics don't match the mood of her songs or vice versa. So with that in mind...

Happiest:
Think About It
Angel
I Don't Wanna Know (it's upbeat, as for the lyrics, they're not too serious either)
Seven Wonders
SYW
Enchanted

Saddest:
Storms
Beauty and The Beast
Goodbye Baby
Belladonna
How Still My Love
Nightbird (because it's all about Robin's death)

She's singing about being with her love for eternity in another life, because her destiny right now doesn't have it in the cards. When they were together in a beautiful setting, however, it was bliss and nothing else mattered. Even though they're no longer on the same path as each other, neither regrets what they had because it was beautiful while it lasted; even though it's over, they still have the memories. Sounds happy to moi.

Just look at the lyrics:

Maybe we were together in another life
Maybe we are together in a parallel universe
Maybe our paths are not supposed to cross twice
Maybe your arms are not supposed to go around me

When I see you again,
As I always do
It appears to me that
Destiny rules
And the spirits are ruthless with the paths they choose
It's not being together,
It's just following the rules
No one's a fool...

Just following the rules... no one's a fool
Just following the rules... no one's a fool
Just following the rules... no one's a fool
No one's a fool...

Screw you, Jake.

Just kidding. I guess it's the music & delivery more than the actual lyrics that make me feel happy:

IDWK: her vocal sounds really happy to me, like she's smiling while she's singing them. Plus, there's CLAPPING, for God's sake, CLAPPING! (sorry, I'm a sucker for clapping. I also clap along to Jack & Diane and Take the Money & Run.)

SW: It sounds like she's remembering a great time in her life - like when you first meet someone & you get those butterflies, it's so exciting. And the video is great, love LB's antics & expressions.

That's Alright: Sounds pretty hopeful to me - "I hope you find a love, your own designs of love" Also empowering "I'm through waiting for you" and "I decided yesterday that I would leave you, I'm alright"

Yeah, but "Don't take me to the tower/and take my child away" just gets me every time. I guess it's hopeful by the end, but the first part of that song is a real tear-jerker.

I guess it could be read either way.

Happy Songs-

Say You Will
Enchanted
Everyday
Angel
Juliet
Violet and Blue (not for the lyrics, but for the beat)

Sad Songs-

Gypsy (sadness covered up by a pop beat)
Doing the Best I Can
Storms
Beautiful Child
Silver Springs
The Highway Man
Goodbye Baby
I Miss You
Sleeping Angel

Happiest:
Enchanted
If I Were You
If Anyone Falls
Sister Honey

Saddest:
Destiny
When I See You Again
Battle Of The Dragon
Kick It
Sara

I would have added Outside the Rain to the sad list but "Love is a word some entertain, If you find it, You have won the game" seems too happy/hopeful to make OTR one of the saddest.

1. Stand Back

Saddest: :(
1. Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You

I never knew you cared for the line "When I see you again." ;)

I still disagree, but I understand what you mean now. Interesting. I guess the theme of compromise (I don't get to have you here, but maybe some other me does somewhere) just isn't happy at all to me.

Wow, I think this one is pretty sad. Not as sad as The Tower, but still sad. Maybe it's that I can't separate it from the reputed backstory.

But my favorite is still the angry Petty version. I think the piano demo is sad. I think the album version is her sitting back reflecting.

I never thought of HAEWAFY as sad (just super-sappy) until I heard the Walsh story.

How in the hell is Enchanted a happy song?

"Crying in the morning
Trying to be strong
Waiting for the spring to turn into the fall
Love don't mean what it says at all
My destiny says that I'm destined to fall"

Makes me want to throw a party. ;)

Yeah, but the thing that gets me is that she doesn't regret anything, because she has faith that they'll be together eventually. And she doesn't just hammer it home at the end, she pushes it throughout the whole song. I think that's what it's all about; not grief, hope.

I was thinking about if Enchanted was really a happy song or not. True some of the lyrics are pretty depressing, but at least the music is really upbeat

Some people are going by the sound.

Again, in a lot of instances, there tends to be a disconnect between the mood/tone/emotion of Stevie's lyrics and the music that accompanies those lyrics. For instance, Enchanted is one of the bounciest seemingly happiest tunes I've ever heard, yet the lyrics are a total 180 of the music. Same with Gypsy, and The Wild Heart etc...

So maybe the question should be: What are the happiest and saddest songs in terms of music and/or lyrics? Stevie doesn't make it easy for us to lump the two together.

Johnny Stew 06-09-2004 07:49 PM

Stevie's saddest songs are easy to list... her happiest songs, however, require a lot of thought!

Happiest (Well, they make me happy at least):
1. Say You Will
2. Stand Back
3. Enchanted
4. Destiny Rules
5. Rooms On Fire

Saddest:
1. When I See You Again (is anyone really surprised?)
2. Battle Of The Dragon
3. She Still Loves Him (I know the feeling, Stevie)
4. Beauty And The Beast
5. Doing The Best That I Can

Hawkeye 06-09-2004 08:12 PM

Happy Songs.

Angel (This has got to be THE happiest song of Stevie's)
Think About It from reissue (right on Angel's ass)
Say You Will
Fireflies
Long Distance Winner ( a very uplifting song to me)

Sad Songs

Storms
Races are Run
Beauty and the Beast
Goodbye Baby (this is VERY sad)
Doing the Best I Can
Goldfish and the Ladybug (They just COULDN't get together  )

Goldfish should be a sad song, but to me it sounds like she's smiling all through the recording.
