I get frustrated sometimes
I'm not trying to lecture, I'm actually wondering if anyone else get frustrated with rude superficial comments.
Sometimes with people around me and sometimes reading this board. I see and hear comments like. Wow Stevie looks fat, or old. Or the worst one was "man Stevie got ugly" Or wow Lindsey has aged so much he looks worn out. And finally, Christine looks really old or "she was always the ugly one". It's one thing to criticize someone's musicianship, (which can be harsh to begin with) but another to slam on the way somebody looks. I don't have a complex or anything, I just shake my head at the some of the world's behavior sometimes. I hope I look as good as FM when I'm 50 or 60. And I hope I have the guts they do when I reach their ages..... If I never saw what SN, LB or CM looked like, I can only imagine how beautiful the images would be in my mind due to the beautiful music they have produced over the years. Yeah, I know it's the way the world is, but it's frustrating. Just some food for thought before the weekend  |
I can get frustrated, but never by brainless comments. The internet's a free space, so there are d*mb*sses everywhere. Every disadvantage has it's adventage. There are mostly sane humorous and interesting posters, too. Focus on them.

I do, but I was mostly referring to people outside this board. This board has some really intelligent FM fans. |
It is show business...
Well, it is show business and Look has always been there.
And since MTV arrived in the early 80s, look became more important for rockers. Though it is not big deal, we care about it anyway. If not, why did we vote for Stevie at People's magazine Most Beautiful People few years ago? And in that magazine, when she was in the list, her article said she said she can loose all her baggage in a flight but NEVER her makeup case. So she also cares about look. Why? Because she is human, like us. It is not the most important thing in a musician, it shouldn't be! But I don't find it wrong to talk about it. Of course, I do find wrong if somebody says "i don't buy the album because they look old". That's bullsheet. Yes, I think Stevie is a bit fat. Yes I wish she had Cher's body, but not big deal anyway. And Chris look beauty but very old in her latest pic. And to me that is... nostalgia. Nostalgia because I'm 37 and I'm getting older too. I miss the old times, the 80s. I'm happy now, but it's natural in humans to miss the past. I don't find offensive the comments about being old or fat (of course if they are not bad deliberated). It's natural, we are humans. It is not the most important, but it is there. It will always be. |

In this age of face lifts and botox, yes it does seem like Christine is ugly. That's a bit stupid. Just because she's letting the wrinkles in doesn't mean she's ugly. In fact, those with face lifts look awful most of the time.
|
there's def. a big difference in discussing Stevie's looks, and how they have changed (although I think the extra weight looks great on her at her age)...there is a difference tho in discussing and mentioning stuff and bashing her...you cant really put the two in the same category. Stevie's IS aging, she's aged a lot, and very gracefully might I add, but is there anything wrong that? No...we can be honest here...we dont have to look at Stevie through fog and mist to be real fans...just because someone mentions Stevie looking old, I don't think it's necessarily a negative thing

Chirstine will be turning 61 in July.

I've never understood why Christine is so often considered to be unattractive.
I've always thought her to be a great beauty, in much the same way as Linda McCartney, who was also always blasted for being "plain," and unattractive. Neither woman looked like Cheryl Tiegs (man, am I dating myself), but they were both always extremely beautiful in their own way... which wasn't an "in your face" kind of way. It was more of an earthy, warm, friendly, approachable way. So "ugly" is not a word I'd ever think of in regards to those women. Besides, ugliness is relative. For me, "ugly" is someone with a nasty disposition or a malicious personality. I also think Christine looks marvelous for someone who's nearly 61 years old. And the same can be said for Stevie being 56 soon. To me, both look about ten years younger than their physical age, without obvious signs of face-lifts, botox, colagen, etc. If either has had work done, it's definitely been subtle, as they both look like you might expect those ladies on the back of the 'Rumours' LP to look, 27 years later. Unlike other celebrities from that era, who are nearly unrecognizable these days. :) |
well, add me to the Chris Is Beautiful fanlist:), but is that what this topic is about? What does that statement say about how I rate her music?
I think there's an element of sexism in rating women in music (whether young or older) on their looks rather than their musical qualities. There are a lot of women in music who make good use of that, too. Christine mcVie is not in that category (meaning, she doesn't use her cleavage to sell records :D), and I applaud her for that. |

I think... I don't like people trying desperately to look another age. I just like a natural look.
But who knows I'll talk differently about this in thirty or so years ;) |
I suppose that if you're going to bring up looks at all, it cuts both ways. Some people gush about Stevie's and Lindsey's looks, and that's cool. Some people criticize Stevie for being heavier and older, which is stupid of course, but that's the risk with talking about looks. Everybody's going to get older and many of us, if not most, are going to get heavier as we age. That's just the way it is. To bash Stevie for that is somewhat shallow, but so be it.
To me, she looks pretty damn good, even if she's done a little work. I don't really think about it. Don't care. I cared when I was 14 and had posters of her on my wall. She could go on stage in a wheelchair now for all I care. As long as she's belting the songs with passion, that's all that matters. I think Lindsey looks great. He probably couldn't go on stage in a wheelchair. Not unless it were one without arms, otherwise it would be pretty damn hard to play the guitar. |

I too, have always thought that Chris is beautiful, and still do. In high school, people would wink and say, "Oh, I know why you like FM" (referring to Stevie's sexuality). That was never it. I'll take the Songbird anyday. Talent is the ultimate aphrodisiac. |

There is now a Christine board here on the Ledge as of today. Marty is still working on it. As of now it is accessible only to supporting members. |
I frankly and honestly couldn't care LESS about looks in a band. Most of the time I'm actually listening to them, so most of all I would think about their voices and their musicianship, of course. In any way I think Christine is a beautiful lady and Stevie looks great for her age. I'm not in the group of people whom you'd see criticizing Fleetwood Mac because of the looks of their members. I don't think it's a valid argument.

I agree with not caring about the looks of any artist. MTV is/was bad. Very bad. Image over substance. :( |

Those comments you mentioned above are actually kind of funny. Maybe it's because i've heard these for so many years. My favorite was when my stepfather said Christine used to be a man! Oh i love when people say "so and so got old". Umm, yeah, duh! Like you would hear "wow, so and so got younger!" Reality check - people do get old and look tired. Wake up people! Not everyone grows old gracefully nor opts for botox or cosmetic surgery. I think people make those comments because it's a natural reaction mechanism we use to compensate for the shock we experience when seeing something or someone change due to natural processes. On the other hand, maybe those of us can't handle those comments ourselves because a part of us believes them to be true and we can't deal with the truth? I'm just speculating here. I know that i'm one of those people. It's like when i hear someone say FM, Stevie, Lindsey or whoever else got old, there's a part of me that acknowledges the statement's accuracy but i don't want to believe that. There's a little voice within me in disbelief and sorrow: "No, they're not old. It's still 1977. They're never going to die. They're going to be around forever." It's crazy but it's because of my own insecurities about life that makes me weary. But i do this with my family too. We fear change or loss about the things we love. It's too early in the morning for me to be philosophical (probably too late for that), but i think life is all about balances. there's good/bad, ups/downs etc....the negativity you feel you encounter occasionally on the board here should open up a platform for which you should express your own point of view, and possibly fathom some victory and satisfaction from that. On the other hand, when you're talking about people outside of the boards that aren't necessarily fans that make those comments, that's kind of a different story. If people know you like something (in this case FM) and they blurt something out that is opinionated or scornful, that irritates me to no end. Why do they do it? If their opinion wasn't asked for then what's the point? And i don't buy that it's a free country and "i can say what i want". I just think it's an excuse to be ignorant and in complete disregard for others. Not too long ago, some girl i ran into said she liked Whitney Houston or something to that effect. Now, personally i have nothing against the woman. She IS a good singer but i'm not a fan. Drug problems? Big deal. Like Stevie and 75% of my rock idols haven't been there? Of course, they hadn't been scrutinized by the media to the same effect. Anyway, i could have made some rude or sarcastic comment about her, but why? To rain on her parade? On the mere chance that my opinion would sway and convince her into not buying Whitney's records anymore? And that eventually everyone else would buy into my propaganda and Whitney would be ruined forever! Wow, i can't believe that i could be so powerful and convincing from one little comment. Then again, should i feel like i'm just exercising my freedom of speech and it's my "right" to express my opinion even though it might hurt others? I think too many times we use free speech as an excuse for being lazy and selfish. I've been in similar situations with FM/SN. Not too long ago, i was at work and someone had posted the "Big Love" from Letterman. I was playing it and the woman next to me, who, mind you, has told me that she liked FM and wouldn't mind seeing them live, said something to the effect of the performance sounding really bad. She knows i love them and would say something like that? On the other hand, she's an idiot because that performance rocked. It's one of the best ones of that song. Now, let me digress, i have to tell you what was going on in my head...I was instantly pissed when she said it. Now, regardless of whatever baggage i may have, the translation of what she said was "you shouldn't like it and it's wrong to listen to it because it sounds horrible." I think anytime we hear a criticism of something we like we hear that translation. Now, even though opinions of all forms of art are subjective, maybe she was right...i didn't examine that possibility. Maybe it did suck and i was so brainwashed by FM that i didn't see it. Even if that was the case, it's ok. Maybe i want to like a bad performance and i'm not a horrible person for it! Essentially, i didn't argue the point with her. It's her opinion. Do i have to explain to her the reasons why she thinks it might suck? No. And i didn't. I could have gotten defensive, and at one time i might have. She's a negative person and I would be sucked into that by letting her and her unwanted opinion win. I have more control over the distribution of my own energy than to do that. Sometimes saying nothing is just more effective. It's very minor in the grand scheme of things. I hope you're catching my drift. I guess it boils down to not taking things to heart that much. I've had to learn to do that over many years. I'm still trying to do it but i'm a lot better as i've gotten older. I don't get mad at the comments as much but i still get frustrated with people's lack of insincerity and concern. People just lack respect and don't think before they speak. It's a shame. |
I notice that the media is very cruel when it comes to looks.
For example an AM talk radio station here in Providence was giving away tickets to the Mansfield, MA show on May 28. They said that they would give them away to the 15th caller. Then they made a 'joke' about how they should ask a 'math' question like how many sandwiches can Stevie Nicks eat in an hour? It was not that funny! I wanted to call up and give them a piece of my mind but I never did. I thought that it was very rude of them since they were giving the tickets away. I never won the stupid tickets from them anyway. |

But if she eats too many sandwhiches will she still be able to Walk a Thin Line.

Only if they save her a place at Weight Watchers. Only then will she know that she was not wrong for eating them sam'iches.
