It definatly is played a lot on the radio. I think the reason it didn't chart is because they, of course, never released a commercial single version of it. :rolleyes: I wish they'd get that we'd buy anything they'd release! :laugh:

I believe the live version of Silver Springs released in 1997/98 charted and thus was nominated for a Grammy. It was all over the radio but I recall it back in 1977 too - the B side but I don't think that one charted.

No the song never did chart on The Billboard Hot 100...although it did get a LOT of airplay on pop and adult stations, and continues to...the Landslide single was actually released as a commercial single (you can buy it in stores)....but with airplay alone its hard for a single to chart on the Hot 100...

The 1997 version of "Landslide" made it to #51 on the Hot 100, but "Silver Springs" never cracked that chart.
Someone once explained it to me this way: Back in '97, only songs that were commercially available as singles qualified for the Hot 100. There was no commercial single for "Silver Springs," so it didn't qualify, but "Landslide" DID have a single, so it made the chart.
There are different rules today: Album tracks, too, can hit the Hot 100. If today's rules had applied back in 1997, I'm sure "Silver Springs" would have made the chart.
In fact, it may well have reached a higher position than "Landslide." On the AC chart, which did consider album cuts in '97 and was based purely on airplay, "Landslide" peaked only at #10, while "Silver Springs" reached an impressive #5.

thanks for the info guys- I had no idea SS didnt' chart in 1997 as it was ALL over the radio. I didn't realize those rules but that's interesting to know as here I thought it had charted just due to the airplay. Too bad - I bet it would have hit the top 10.

Speaking of charting - how high has both Peacekeeper and SYW gone? I wonder what the 3rd single will be? My bet is on "What's the World Coming to."

I agree with your 3rd SYW single choice, Lauren. WTWCT is a good tune, and it is also in the concert set list making it a front runner. I would like to see something more "popish" like Miranda or Thrown Down because I think it would chart better, but I doubt that will happen...

I've got a Silver Springs CD single with a radio edit/album version and then a promo single that was given away at Camelot stores. Doesn't that count as 2 singles? SS was released as a single to radios...whether it charted or not was one thing. But I do remember hearing it on a fairly regular basis in 97/98.

Okay, let me try to chime in without causing more confusion. The Billboard 100 singles list was always based on sales of singles, like the Billboard 200 albums list. So, if there was no commercial single available, like Silver Springs, then it couldn't chart because no one could buy it. I believe this to be the reason that FM only has one #1 hit...everyone just bought the whole albums, which is where that line of thinking comes in today. I mean, from what I'm aware of, GYOW was all over the place and charted at #10. NOTE: The rest is speculation --

I suppose the music industry saw that singles didn't sell as much, and probably because of that, artists weren't releasing commercial singles. So, they changed the format so that airplay could be a factor in determining where the single would chart on the Billboard 100.

What you have are promotional singles, that the record companies send out to the radio stations they're hoping will play the song.

At the time, there needed to be a commercially available single (in stores, for purchase... not give-aways), for a song to chart on Billboard's Hot 100.
