CHRISTINE MCVIE
Legacy Celebrated ...
FLEETWOOD MAC PAYS TRIBUTE
1/10/2023 8:30 AM PT
Christine McVie's life and legacy brought Fleetwood Mac together again to celebrate her memory.
McVie's service was held Monday night at Little Beach House Malibu -- and it was all about celebrating the life and career of the famed singer/songwriter and keyboardist.

Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and Stevie Nicks, who called Christine her "best friend in the whole world" were spotted outside the event as they paid their respects and shared some of their favorite memories of McVie.

As we reported ... Christine died in November at 79 after a brief illness.

When she died, the group put a statement out saying, "There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed."

Christine joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 ... 3 years after the group formed. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group in 1998.
there are new photos of Stevie and Karen and Lindsey and Stella exiting the tribute event.

also, looking at pics, i think it's her friend Mary and not Karen in the pic with SN, and i'm not sure who is the girl with Mick.

I’m sure he was there - he’s probably just stealthier when it comes to avoiding paparazzi.
It looks like Lynne and Ruby in the photos with Mick, and could that be Sharon standing right behind Stevie?
It’s so shady that paparazzi were there capturing these people in such a vulnerable moment of mourning a loved one, and that the articles spent so much time talking about what they were wearing. My heart is breaking all over again just imagining all the bittersweet emotions shared by Christine’s musical family that night.

I agree it is odd that the writer is commenting on what they are wearing. Its not a wake or funeral. It's a celebration of her life memorial.

I would think do, too, though the DAILY MAIL article suggests it was just Mick, Lindsey and Stevie. But I can’t picture John NOT going unless — god forbid — something is up with him, too.

I would honestly bet my life that John was not there. His health may not be fantastic but I don't think anything 'is up' with him, other than grief, and wanting to remain a private guy and keep Chris close to his own heart. This is not his thing *at all*.

Was this event just for mac members and their close friends/family?! if so, then in that case i would change my opinion about John not going.
I guess I jumped to the conclusion that it was like this big public thing with strangers and questions etc. But if the strangers/questions part was at the end, when mick, stevie and lindsey came outside, then john could have easily avoided all that and just gone home by the back door. So if it was just a group/family type of gathering, then yes, i could see him attending that in honor of chris.

Little Beach House Malibu is a members only thing. It’s kind of like a country club/hotel/event venue thing. It’s part of Soho House. They’re all over the world. I don’t get the impression that Christine’s memorial was a big open event. It was probably only for friends and family.

Nothing else that i heard. But some people have asked about this other question and I was waiting to make any comment. But now that the band has had their memorial/tribute for chris, i'm sure all of their associates/ guests that attended are aware of this info at this point. A former associate actually told me last night about this , so at this point, I don't think it is really any secret. So this all I will say...
I keep seeing on various websites 'why doesn't John make a statement??' etc etc'...and it kind of upsets me.
John and Chris had a lifelong love and friendship, although their close relationship was always overshadowed by those other two. But John flew to London to be with Chris. Dragged himself back afterward in time to attend that nightmare day of the juliens auction. He doesn't need to say anything, to anyone.
As i have always said, they adored each other. And he was with her.
That is his statement.

I don’t think John has social media. Fleetwood Mac made a collective statement so I assumed that was part John’s statement. I didn’t know John went to London to be with Christine, that is very sweet. Stevie said in her tribute she posted to Instagram that she wanted to go to London, but was told to wait. I wonder why John was there and Stevie was told to wait? Was Mick there? Mick and Christine have always been good friends as well.
I’m just curious about the details from Christine’s memorial in Malibu. Who was there? Who gave speeches? What did they say in their speeches?

I don't know details about speeches...I'd be curious too. I assume it was band members and their family and associates, probably sharing memories.
I don't think Stevie and Chris were in touch after the tour ended. I think they were close when they were working but had not been in contact in last 4 years. Stevie tends to exaggerate a little, imo...I'm sure she loved Chris, but best friends might not be an accurate description of their relationship.
Stevie did not have same sort of relationship with Chris that John did...J and C were extremely close. They were like family.

that looks like LB's daughter (Stella) next to him, and looks like a blonde is behind him, but no clear if it's his wife or his other daughter Leelee. Looks like Mick has a daughter with him also.
If the paps were there, that suggests they had a tip from someone. You wouldn't just randomly be parked outside that venue expecting a memorial service or FM members.
I totally get why they would want to snap pics, though, because, aside from Chris being a newsworthy person, the whole SN/LB drama and 'will we see them together or in any way interacting" would be a draw. Not saying I agree with that, just saying from a news/pap perspective, that would be a worthy get.
ETA: The tall, dark-haired person just visible over Stevie's head sure looks like Karen. The shorter blonde to the right of the pic is hard to tell coz she's wearing a mask. Could be Mary, or someone else...
I love that Lindsey wore his standard Lindsey uniform.... (frankly, so did the others)

agree re all the questions and insistence on John statements. people are nosy and self-righteous. if they stop and think, they would know half of the answers to their insistent questions. John has no social media, never gives any interviews, and FM made a statement. if someone expects a separate statement from John, they have not been paying attention to this band.
same with questions why Stevie was told not to fly in, while John went. he's a family and a close friend. she is not.
that all said, i am just as nosy when it comes to finding out more about the memories shared by the band at this LA memorial. and i'm happy they were able to celebrate Christine and start their own healing over losing her.

I don't think they never really had a time when they didn't talk for years. It was maybe some awfully rough months of silence during Rumours, and then they managed to figure out how to kind of move forward. Chris always said it was because they 'did it in a lot more humorous way' than stevie/lindsey.
I also think a big part of it was that they were such good *friends*!!! i don't think stevie and lindsey were ever friends in the same way.
just recently read an article from February 1978 where Chris admitted they had just gotten divorced, in February, because John/Julie had set a wedding date for April, and they had to get it done.
But she also said they had told everyone/the press that they were divorced in 1976! and apparently that was all just bull**** lol, they were still married for all that time.
maybe that explains Chris's wandering wedding ring, which was switched between her left and right hand A LOT in those days.

And, it was probably the second such song she’d written during their marriage. The first was “Just Crazy Love” which I think was about her alleged affair with Martin Birch. Even has the similar “You know you'll always be the only one” line. It’s such an upbeat song from the time she was writing material like “Remember Me,” “Dissatisfied,” “Did You Ever Love Me,” “Believe Me,” and “Why” that I don’t think it was about John.

As a couple, but I also think they were able to contextualize their relationship. The whole “we spent more time together than couples who been married for thirty years or more.” They were divorced, but they didn’t stop thinking of each other as family. Christine wrote a song about his boat The Challenge and named her tour bus after it. When he did his solo project, she lent him her keyboards. When Molly was born, John made Christine her godmother. It’s so fitting that the one wedding vow that kept was “til death do us part.”

that's beautiful. and true. 'in sickness and in health' would be another one. anyone else recall how mick was the one that had to tell chris about John's cancer diagnosis ? Or how often chris mentioned john's health after his cancer treatment? she brought it up in several interviews, how he was 'healing really nicely now' and he was 'dancing around like mickey mouse' when his 6 month check up or something came back clear.
btw john went to switzerland to visit chris when she did her solo album. he visited his parents in London and then conveniently popped over to see chris for awhile. i believe George Hawkins actually told me John even brought his dad and stepmom to see chris also lol, which is very cute...then sent them home after a few days.
In the late 70's/early 80's they hung out together *quite* a lot. i was told by someone who worked with them around Tusk time 'you could not work with Christine in any capacity without John being part of the proceedings.' i always loved that quote.
Also I adore those Chris photo shoots that john crashed .... the one in 82 where he's looking for her ring, and the one in 87, where they're wearing the awful matching green jackets.
John wore his 'penguin ring' from Chris every day for 17 years, when it suddenly disappeared. probably alcohol related, i'm guessing it got lost. But in any photo from 1976 about 1993, he was always wearing 2 rings....the wedding ring to Julie on his left hand, big gold penguin ring from chris on his right hand.
(If this had been lindsey/stevie, there probably would have been entire websites devoted to this fact alone....)
I have a tons of old audiotape interviews with chris where she gushed on and on about how wonderful her relationship was with John. i wish i knew how to upload them to youtube or something. she said she considered herself 'the one that had the luxury, of being able to rediscover the friendship in the man you were married to.'
i could go on and on.

I agree nobody, especially John, has to make a public statement, but this is Fleetwood Mac we’re talking about. Social media? Fleetwood Mac made a career of being very public about their lives long before the internet. “Man of the World,” “Showbiz Blues,” “Child of Mine,” “Dissatisfied,” “Bad Loser,” “Go Your Own Way, “Dreams,” “All Over Again,” and “Sweet Girl” stick out. that's beautiful.

It’s part of the band’s brand.
Talking about their interpersonal relationships may be a thing with them, but why in the world would you need to make a statement saying you're sad someone died you've known for 50 years died. The closer you are to someone I think the world should expect you to say the LEAST. Why can't people grieve in peace?
I remember when John Lennon was shot, I kept waiting for Paul McCartney's statement. But I was a schoolgirl then. That's the way I thought. I thought a press release was necessary to validate pain. I don't think that way any more and I really wonder at these people who write things like, "You didn't even congratulate Suzie about the baby." Well, Suzie is my sister. I was at the hospital when she delivered the baby. I really didn't see the need to congratulate her on Tik Tok. Human beings who are strangers to us actually communicate with each other outside of social media.
It meant nothing to me that the band make public statements about Lindsey's heart surgery when they didn't take the time to call him personally. I'd like to take their public statements and smack them with the paper they're written on.

Lis — thanks for sharing that insight into John and Chris’ friendship over the years. I feel like we knew in our hearts that John was a true friend to Chris, without the self promotion and fanfare that some other members of the band engaged in. But I’m glad that he got to be there with her and her family and that it’s not been part of the public discourse.
I’m glad that the other three were able to attend this event in peace.

That's just tip of the iceberg from what i could pull from this brain. Yes they were indeed true friends. It's a good thing I can't post any photos here or there would be an endless stream of j/c pictures, too!
John was there at memorial with the other 3, btw. Just didn't come out the front for photos etc. No surprise on that.

I feel a strange way, like I miss her in the world, even though she wasn't part of my world. It's not like I could see or talk to her. She's not even like other celebrities that I see regularly in magazines or on tv. If Anderson Cooper died, I watch him every night, so it would make sense that I miss him. But I haven't seen Chris in years. And when she was out of the band, all of us went years without seeing or hearing anything new from her. But now, it's like I can feel her not being there. And thinking that the 5 of them can never be together again or that Chris will never know how the Songbird collection did . . . it's bonkers and kind of hopeless.
Did she really get sick suddenly? Was she cognizant long enough to realize that Everywhere was everywhere. Because it feels like she's no longer on earth, when I hear her songs I just tear up, now.
The funny thing is, with people I actually knew in my life, I don't feel this way. My dad died in 2005 and I still talk to him in my head and sometimes out loud. I still feel that he's . . . somewhere. But I can see Christine on video or hear her any time I want to. Yet, she's not there. And it seems unnatural. I'm not thinking she was 79 and lived a long time and "we all knew it was coming."
With a lot of these celebrities, you admire their work and think of it fondly, but you aren't really "sad" when they die. It's the course of life. But with her, my brain is reacting like the universe was interrupted, somehow.

I do think it was really quick. I mean there was all the auction info up on her Instagram up until pretty soon before she passed...I don't think her assistant would be putting that up if things had been looking so awful...? Unless it was kept from her as well.
I keep wondering if it was one of those fast moving cancers, that you don't even know you have until one day they realize it's there and it's spread all over and there's nothing they can do. I worked w someone years ago who I think was diagnosed with esophageal or throat cancer and they were gone in like 2 or 3 weeks. And honestly in Chris's last radio interviews, even in the BBC thing, her voice sounded awful. Just so hoarse and strained....i remember actually saying out loud to myself, 'wow she sounds terrible.'
But yes from what I've heard i think she was mentally cognizant until the end. I'm sure only the people closest to her know what she had. And they sure as hell will never talk.

It's like a living thing, this Fleetwood Mac. It's a source stronger than its various members.
Christine McVie

The 2014-2015 tour, Christine’s return. Didn’t every show sell out in minutes when tickets went on sale? And they had even just toured in 2013.
By chance, I got really into Fleetwood Mac in 2013. I had never listened to them much before but heard Everywhere from The Dance playing at my parents’ house and loved it and just dove deep into Fleetwood Mac. Coincidentally I saw that they were touring and they would be in my city soon (this was their 2013 tour). I debated buying tickets because Christine wasn’t with them anymore so I didn’t think they would play any of her songs. But I was like what the hell I might not get the opportunity again. So I got the tickets and saw them in 2013 and it was great. Then Christine rejoined and I saw them again in 2014 and 2015. I went to one of their earlier shows in 2014 when Christine was doing Songbird so that was really cool. The last time I saw them was in Los Angeles in 2017 at the Classic West Festival. I didn’t see them in 2018-2019 because I was butt hurt about them removing Lindsey from the band. I still wish that they made it work and Lindsey stayed with the band and the 2018-2019 tour should have been their farewell tour.

I don't think it sold out in minutes. I went to the NJ october 2014 show, and can't remember how fast I bought my ticket, but being in Peru, working on weekdays... I think it was after few days they were on sale that I bought mine.
And, yes... Christine's return was a huge event that makes the OWTS tour, magic. But the point was the Rumours lineup again. OWTS with Christine, but without Lindsey, or without Stevie, it wouldn't have been the same.

Technically, it was their farewell tour.
Although it was acknowledged there was uncertainty around how many tours were left in them, I don’t recall any sort of sentiment that the 2018 tour was a farewell tour. In the end it looks to be their last tour, although not planned as such.

I took that to mean friends, family, managers, assistants, mini-Mac…All of the wheels that keep Fleetwood Mac going. The actual members of Fleetwood Mac are just a small part of the overall machine/Fleetwood Mac family. It’s never just the four to six members of the group.

Mm I wonder what he means by that. Probably once they had gotten the news that things were looking really bad, maybe they all started texting about the situation . Maybe a group chat to share info or their concern etc? I doubt Stevie ran to Lindsey's house or vice versa. But one would hope this would make them all see how ridiculous It is to hold grudges over stupid stuff.

His use of "There was an immediate coming together" caught my eye. Like he was addressing that the focus isn't on a grudge, the only one is Stevie and Lindsey, and that we are all here as people who got to be on a team with Christine. But then Lindsey is not a band member.

I hope I'm wrong, I really do. I'm slightly doubtful that there was much interaction between Lindsey + Stevie. I'm betting they were able to sit in the same room together, maybe say hello, read their remarks and leave.
I could see Lindsey trying to extend the olive branch and be as nice as possible, but I can't see the ice thawing from camp Stevie. Perhaps I'm selling Stevie short, it's a guess as to how things went.
Also, somebody having a heart attack is a pretty clear signal that there is potential the Fleetwood Mac family was at risk of losing one of their own. Although it's debated exactly what their response was, I don't think anyone from the outside looking in got the impression they fell over themselves to wish Lindsey well. Again, I hope I'm wrong.
I also wonder if Stella went with Lindsey because Kristen was still upset about how they treated Lindsey and didn't want to go.

That’s so over the top and inappropriate for such a somber event (to barricade Lindsey like that), but that would be a classic Stevie move if there ever was one. She’s always insisted on having a bubble of people around her since the 70s.

Of course Christine, John, Mick and Peter will be the ultimate members of Fleetwood Mac.
But when I read the statement by Fleetwood Mac on November 30 that was signed Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac's members as of today to me are Mick, John, and Stevie.
I like Mike and Neil but they just did an oldies tour and that was all. Billy and Rick were true band members.

Christine McVie died. The people who knew her, worked with/for her, and loved her were celebrating her life. The band drama doesn’t matter in the least given the enormity of what’s happened.

Last year Christine said the band sort of broke up. Mike said he thinks the Fleetwood Mac ship sailed for him. Neil said he wouldn't lay claim to membership in the band if Lindsey were allowed back. Had the 2018-2019 band made an album (which I wish they had done) I would have said to keep it Present Band. I agree with you to merge it to Post-Rumours or I'd add 2018-2019 Fleetwood Mac Tour forum.

I love the moment in the Tusk photo shoot when Lindsey is trying to smooth Christine’s hair. The photographer kept trying to straighten it, when it was blowing and Lindsey tried too.

We’ll never know exactly what happened in that room, and it’s really not worth the effort to speculate. The only thing we know is that Stevie and Lindsey were able to put their differences aside enough to be in the same room to pay their respects to their fallen bandmate. That’s all that really matters.
Speculation is always worth the effort when it comes to FM.

well there was certainly a period where the remaining members were instructed by their lawyers to not communicate with him while the lawsuit was going on (LB mentioned this in an interview-- he was told this I believe from John)
Lindsey did also say in an interview that after the lawsuit he got a nice email from Christine, in which he says she indicated that maybe even Stevie was realizing it was all not a good thing and might as he put it, want him to "come back home"
Though I agree they likely were not communicating in any ongoing, personal way... like she would have been with Mick or even John, there could have been the occasional communication or touching base sort of thing post-firing/post-lawsuit

I wonder if there are any serviceable demos of unreleased Christine songs that could be worked into one one or two last Fleetwood Mac songs by Lindsey, to which Stevie (perhaps at a distance) might be cajoled into contributing some vocals, with Mick and John adding their touches. .
It would perhaps close the book on the band. I'm not sure I really want to see yet another iteration of Fleetwood Mac and something tells me that's not really on the cards anyway. The thought of the Finn/Campbell version being its very last activity doesn't seem like a very fitting coda to me.

No, they would have simply broken up. John wasn’t going to do anything other than an arena tour at that stage in life. He wasn’t going out on a theater tour, don’t be ridiculous.
ETA: To reiterate, the only choices were a Fleetwood Mac tour with Stevie or no Fleetwood Mac tour. Christine refusing to tour without Lindsey would have only broken up Fleetwood Mac. And for what? Another LBCM album? In the three years and two weeks between Fleetwood Mac’s last show and Christine’s passing, there was never so much as a joke about another LBCM album. Not even during a global pandemic that shut everything down for a year, giving them ample time to record a project, especially since they could electronically send tracks to each other whenever from wherever.
Mick’s talked about making an album with Lindsey since they reconciled in mid-2020.

I actually don't think it would have broken up Fleetwood Mac had Christine put her foot down.
Stevie would have been royally pissed, but everyone in the band would have been forced to calm the f*ck down and most likely wait a few months for the tour to start (which they wound up doing in the end, anyways) I try to give Christine grace, she was only a few years back into the band and probably felt unsure of how much weight she had in the equation. She had more than she realized.
What was Azoff going to do, find replacements for both Christine and Lindsey?
The whole band needed 10 minutes in the time out chair and cooler heads would have prevailed. So much drama over a simple play the hits tour, with no big project or PR to push (beyond the return of Christine) It's sad that Azoff played right into Stevie's tantrum and told her everything she wanted to hear because he had just pulled it off with The Eagles. He thought he had it in the bag, take Lindsey out of the band and he could tour them endlessly like The Eagles - there would be nobody there to speak up (i.e. Lindsey)
Ironically, it was really Azoff and Stevie that finished the band off. His involvement in combination with Stevie were probably the worst thing to happen to Fleetwood Mac since cocaine. Talk about a toxic combo.

I agree. If Christine and/or John had said no to a tour without Lindsey, cooler heads would have prevailed. But here’s the kicker everyone seems to minimize when discussing this- neither John or Christine said no to the tour. They both stayed with Fleetwood Mac and willingly toured without Lindsey. And they could have easily gotten out of the tour if they had wanted to. John’s battle with cancer and Christine’s age would have been enough to withdraw from the tour gracefully. No one was going to make them tour against their will.
I’m grateful they toured, and I’m beyond thankful I got to see them one last time. Christine was one of several highlights of that show for me, she was clearly having a blast playing with FM, much like I read she did with Lindsey on their tour the year before. I’m just saying Christine and John chose to tour with FM rather than stand up for Lindsey.

I agree. To pin this on Christine or John is unfounded. We don't know what happened (on that front) . Was she under contract? Did she threaten to quit? etc etc etc.
I believe they would have just canceled the tour which meant mega $$$ for everyone involved. It's really easy to say you don't need $$. However, a lot of crew, vendors mgmt, legal, are all involved in a big tour as well. There's a lot of information that points to the decision being made when Christine was away. But again, I don't know that for sure either.

if the choice was Fakewood Mac or no Fleetwood Mac anymore, that choice should have been clear.

Speaking of figuring things out, I seem to remember you fawning all over "new music" from the "new band". You'd expect such an expert to figure out by now that it was all bullsh*t.
Nice try, but if you go back, you’ll see that I said new music was possible, but I was never more than 50/50 that it would actually happen.
Ever.
I always had complete faith in Fleetwood Mac’s (Stevie’s) ability to screw up something like having Neil Finn and Mike Campbell in the band.

see, i think he would. i think he would tour FM with only Stevie and Mick, and replace Christine, Lindsey and John.
so i'm not sure that i'm buying Chris and John putting the foot down would lead to no tour.
if the choice was Fakewood Mac or no Fleetwood Mac anymore, that choice should have been clear.
Stevie, Mick, Neil and Mike could have toured as a band under different name, not as Fleetwood Mac. of course, the money was in FM moniker, so that was not gonna happen.
It definitely wouldn't have shocked me if Azoff tried to do that - hobble some sort of tour with only Mick and Stevie and call it Fleetwood Mac. John probably wouldn't have given a darn, but I could see Christine & Lindsey filing a lawsuit and being very unhappy with Mick and Stevie.
The Eagles will be on the road until only one of them is left. After that it's a game of poker of who will have ownership of the name.

My guess is he would have booked a “Stevie Nicks featuring Mick Fleetwood” tour, likely adding a few other Fleetwood Mac songs (BMW, Oh Well, Don’t Stop, and maybe The Chain) to her set, if it had come to that.
It's sad that Azoff played right into Stevie's tantrum and told her everything she wanted to hear
You spelled conspired wrong. I mean, it’s not like Lindsey didn’t take a massive shat on the festivals Irving invested tens of millions putting together.

No need to tour under a different name- they were Fleetwood Mac. I totally understand you have a, um, strong love for Lindsey, but the simple fact is, it was Fleetwood Mac before Lindsey was ever in the band… it was Fleetwood Mac when Lindsey quit the band, it was Fleetwood Mac when Stevie and Rick quit the band, it was Fleetwood Mac when Bekka and Dave joined the band, it was Fleetwood Mac when they reunited for the Dance, it was Fleetwood Mac when Christine left and Mick, John, Lindsey, and Stevie toured, and it was Fleetwood Mac when Mick, John, Christine, Stevie, Mike, and Neil toured.
Putting Lindsey on a pedestal by saying Fleetwood Mac is not really Fleetwood Mac just because your favorite member didn’t tour with them is, well, devotion at its highest. I actually like it when you say that, because it completely undermines your credibility, to say that a band with Mick FLEETWOOD, John MCVie, Christine MCVie, and Stevie Nicks is not really Fleetwood Mac, all because Lindsey didn’t get to tour with them.

To be fair, nothing about what Lindsey said about the Classic shows was wrong. They are total cash grabs. He said the quiet part out loud. Not a smart business savvy thing to do - but it was the truth. And it surely didn’t do one thing to impact anyone’s ability to make money off the show. I doubt anyone saw those comments from LB and refused to go because of it.
Speaking of bad business sense…if I was Lindsey or Stevie, I would’ve demanded ownership or a stake in the FM entity as terms for returning in 1997. I believe it did come out in the lawsuit that there really was no entity or defined ownership structure in place. Basically, once they aren’t out on the road, the enterprise ceases to exist. Although, having an equal third of Eagles didn’t prevent Felder from getting fired either.

The only issue I have with “Fakewood” beyond the fact the 18-19 had the three principals is that there was a fake Fleetwood Mac in 1974 put together by their ex-manager in a legal dispute over who owned the name. The band (Mick, John, Christine, and Bob) had to file an injunction preventing their ex-manager from using the name and ownership of the name wasn’t settled until after “Rumours” was released. So, “Fakewood” only comes across as a bratty tantrum from a fan base of a particular member.

That you would call a band that features Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie Fakewood Mac is so beyond disrespectful to them. i was surprised by your claims at the time, because i didn't expect the most powerful man in the industry to have such a thin skin. i guess thin skin really means a potential to lose any money for people like that. once i saw Azoff's bs statement that came out about a year ago in concert with Nicks' bs statement about LB's firing, i realized you were very right.
i'm not really sure why Lindsey ever hired him as his manager. for Azoff, i guess managing LB was the back door back to managing cashcow FM (that he was out of after pushing Stevie into rehab in the 80s).
That would have been a nonstarter. Not after what they went to get full ownership.
In 1996-97 if S&L said we each want 15-20% ownership in a newly created Fleetwood Mac entity, would they have resisted? If resisting meant more tours on the county fair circuit and never achieving the monetary success that Eagles were still enjoying 2 years into HFO?

I don’t think Lindsey’s stray remark — not exactly the shot heard round the world — did much other than tweak Irving’s nose.
But Lindsey should have said, “I recommend seeing the Fleetwood Mac lineup because it includes Earth Wind & Fire. They’re the band to get excited about, although bear in mind that they’re all old and well past their musical prime. Still, that more-or-less describes every band on both bills, so don’t overpay for your tickets! In fact, there is nothing wrong at all with just staying home and watching Breathless in 4k.”

But, what if LB tinkering with the 2018 tour: I.E. trying to change dates (postpone), having a solo show in there, being a bit too negotiative... gave mgmt a flashback from 1987. Then add $tevie in all her new found power itching to axe him and control the band. Add Classic East/West SteveMac theory ...
What if all that combined greased the wheels for a pink slip. From a business stand point, nobody is going to mess with a 100 million plus grossing tour. $tevie is Don Henley... And that's that..... it's all about money and power.
It's Fake in the sense that it wasn't a band anymore, it's an entity. I have to respect Lindsey for standing up for art, his art.. and somewhat the legacy. I don't think he's cutting edge or even out there. But, girl did know how to fall on a sword. And, he also didn't read the room when it came to just how much clout he had lost since 1987 or even 1997/2003. $tevie played to win, even if I meant destroying the legacy. I do think it's the same for FM too during lockdown, and before the 2018 tour too. Mike cranked out plenty of new music. I guess Crowded House too though I think CH's one album started recording in 2019, but still they got one out. Would have been great to hear a new FM sound. I don't consider Find Your Way Home a Mac song. It's a dreary Neil song. I do like Neil, including To the Island and Playing With Fire.
As I think you meant, Stevie is the one who won't record with FM. Just look at her 2022 Tour setlist to see what her interest is in playing new music to arenas and outdoor arenas. She didn't perform her lockdown creation after saying it's in the list with Edge and Stand Back.

Let me take a stab at this. The reason why the 2018 tour was so bitter and can be called fake was for several reasons. Its not the same to equate Lindsey, Christine, and Stevie's voluntary leaving the band with Lindsey's firing. No one had been fired from Fleetwood Mac since the early 70s. However the band was not firing just a guitarist like they did in the early 70s. Lindsey was the man behind the curtain, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. When he came back he kept the band rolling and touring with SYW and Unleashed. Without him, it would have just been one big Stevie road show. But it gets worse. He was fired for the dumbest reason ever. At first the band could not even explain why Lindsey was not there. Their story kept changing. But it gets worse. Lindsey already signed the deal to tour with the band almost a year prior. Sure enough just as the band was supposed to start tour rehearsals, he gets fired and they hire/replace him with 2 unusual people. One of them was the late Tom Petty's guitarist who Stevie felt great loyalty to. The whole think just stinks so bad. This was not Lindsey's choice. He was kicked to the curb on what would be Fleetwood Mac's LAST bloody tour. Its outrageous, dumb, and just plain silly. Wait, it gets worse. This incarnation of the band performed Lindsey song from the stage. They had no shame. For all of the reasons above, this court is ruling that its proper to call them Fakewood Mac.
Let us not forget that Stevie wanted to replace Christine with Sheryl Crow. She brought her back up singers to Fleetwood Mac. And she finally brought one of her guitarists to Fleetwood Mac. It really should be called StevieMac.
It's Fake in the sense that it wasn't a band anymore
For all of the reasons above, this court is ruling that its proper to call them Fakewood Mac.
and the verdict for the 2 of you:
Well, what can you expect from someone who worships Lindsey Buckingham?.

And here I’d been a pretty good boy lately and not getting cranky. I guess I just reached my threshold of the Fleetwood Mac/Fakewood Mac debate and threw my hissy fit. Now that I got it out of my system, I’ll be good for another two months or so, until I reach my threshold again and throw my hairbrush across the room and start posting cranky comments! But I don’t feel like everyone is disputing my logic. I mean, I have tickets for the concert I saw that clearly says Fleetwood Mac, so I’m good. My logic is, whether Lindsey quit or was fired, the end result was the same- FM toured without him.

I kind of wonder if John and Chris-- much as they loved lindsey-- were just sick of the constant fighting between L+S. In that BBC documentary chris says while she was gone, she didn't miss much, because those 2 were still 'fighting like cats and dogs, tearing each other limb from limb'...why would it have been different once she returned? maybe things were peachy for a little while but i'm sure it didn't take long before they were at each other's throats again. and on the road, that drama affects everybody.
All that stuff had to have gotten old, and they may have been just fed up w the negativity between L/S. there must have been 1000 things that went on that we are not privy to. and maybe in the end they wanted to tour enough that they agreed to let Lindsey go and continue w Neil and Mike. Chris said she loved lindsey, but that she was having so much fun w the new guys, that it was a happy positive environment. it broke my heart when they fired lindsey, and yes it pissed me off that they caved to stevie, but maybe they'd just had enough. as chris said...'you gotta look forward, mate.'

I mostly agree with all of this, but I don’t think Stevie was itching to axe Lindsey.
However, I think her tolerance for Lindsey dramatically changed after Tom Petty died. As we all do when someone we love dies, she reflected on her life and I think came to the conclusion that life’s too short.

except John and Chris had absolutely nothing to do with LB firing.
we've been hearing behind-the-scenes rumors at the time (couple of months before it became public). John disagreed when it was first brought up and Mick had to go after him and talk him into it. Chris left the band for a week, when she was told (they did it in her absence, while she was on the plane from the UK to US - or the other way around, can't remember now). they both refused at first and then Mick worked on both of them to talk them into agreeing.
that said, yes i believe SN and LB kept fighting on and off. and yes, Chris and Mick both played along for the PR that you mention, in Mick's case to a very annoying level. although Chris didn't at first, for that CBS interview, and they had to cut her remarks out for the piece that aired - Rolling Stone magazine later posted them.
i'm sure Christine and John both made the most of it once the tour started. Neil and Mike seem to be nice guys, and they both later made clear that they were told Lindsey left on his own accord, and not the real story.
Stevie & Azoff infused unnecessary band discord into Cristine's last years, broke dysfunctional FM family, and deprived Christine of her happy fruitful collaboration with Lindsey, creating and performing, which by all signs they planned to continue before that faithful day. and this actually hurts now, when Christine is no longer among us. but also, i am now really glad that she did tour in 2018-19, managing to make the best of the bad situation and live her life to the fullest.

Do you have a link to that Rolling Stone post of her comments that CBS cut, or could you please post them here? Thanks.
I didn't like Christine saying she "completely understood" why they had to part ways with Lindsey and agreed it had to be done. She would have been better to call in sick for the interview if she was prepared to say those things.

if you do a search here on the ledge, it should come up. it was posted here at the time, and we discussed it.
i may try to search later for you.
EDIT: i think this thread is discussing the article, but there was just a link to it and unfortunately i don't see the whole article being transcribed https://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=57827&highlight=rolling+stone+interview+Christine - maybe someone can do a better search?
EDIT #2: apparently i transcribed the actual article, if that's the one - here's the post https://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=1225095&postcount=128
looking through the discussion, i think the part that was cut out in CBS interview was when Chris said that she was flying to London and only heard about this when she landed. there are some other threads where the cutting out of some of Christine's statement(s) was discussed. that was surprising to people because the first statements were that the WHOLE band has decided they could not go on with Lindsey anymore. and then Christine came out and said she was not there, and was only told later.

There's a real sadness and restrained anger, perhaps, in Christine when she talks about Lindsey leaving in 87 and being replaced by Billy and Rick in the BBC documentary- just listen to the pauses...
"and we all decided we gotta replace Lindsey, and that's when we got Billy Burnette and Rick Vito and rehearsed frantically and went out on the road ...it wasn't the same .. obviously"
She was technically talking about Billy and Rick, but her body language and careful choice of words seem to indicate the 2018 sacking as well as Mike and Neil were on her mind.

you can't say you are good boy now - i didn't see your apology for hitting me with that brush in your hissy fit, while getting whatever your problem was outta the system. :)

Honestly I am too. I'm looking up old interviews on youtube, I'm watching the BBC documentary a few times a week, I'm listening to her songs a lot. I have Fleetwood Mac pictures sort of in various places in my house and sometimes I'll pass one and just have to stop and look at it for a while. I have a gorgeous picture of her and John as the lock screen on my phone. She's in my head a lot.

Seriously. The impact of her death continues to grow every day. A woman I never came closer than 100 feet of during my entire life. The world is a much worse place without her.

I miss her so much. I cried for hours on 11/30, but have been feeling just numb and dazed ever since. It doesn't feel real; part of me still can't believe it.
Even though I know logically my life isn't any different than if she were just retired, the world feels so bleak knowing she's not here anymore. It's fitting that so many of her songs mention the sun - it really hasn't been shining as brightly since she's been gone.

apparently i transcribed the actual article, if that's the one - here's the post https://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=1225095&postcount=128
looking through the discussion, i think the part that was cut out in CBS interview was when Chris said that she was flying to London and only heard about this when she landed. there are some other threads where the cutting out of some of Christine's statement(s) was discussed. that was surprising to people because the first statements were that the WHOLE band has decided they could not go on with Lindsey anymore. and then Christine came out and said she was not there, and was only told later.
Thanks........

Yes...this! I was going to post pretty much the same thing. It's not just the replacements that made the whole thing fake, it was the entire premise and how it was handled.
Mick's "new band" comments....fake
"We don't like to use that word(fired)"...fake
"We weren't happy" comments....fake. Stevie wasn't happy. Heck, Christine wasn't even aware when/where the axe was swung.
"I'm not the boss in this band"...bwahahahaha fake.
The Tom Petty tribute...fake. I'm sorry, IMO she's exploiting her friendship with Tom to use Free Falling as an easy peasy show stopper moment. Mike didn't even want to do it. People here can flame me for this, it's ok. They knew the set needed as many feel good moments as they could get.
The infamous Lindsey "smirk".....fake. It was the whole band.
"A new chapter to revisit our blues roots"....mostly fake. Most of it was cut from the setlist by mid-tour.
Filling the setlist with crowded house and split enz tunes....fake. Why not call it Mick Fleetwood and His All Star Band instead?
Back to the topic, it still seems surreal that Christine is gone and I think of her all the time. It's heartbreaking that she won't pop up in a new interview or the opportunity for all 5 of them to be together is now forever lost.

It also annoys me and many others Stevie's assumption and acknowledgement she is the lead singer and the masses will not attend concerts without her. Only a lead singer in a band could pull this off.
Let me explain. Bands fire members all the time. Bon Jovi fired their keyboard player when the band was almost at its peak. If you are routinely drunk, wont practice, or steal from the band, etc. Those are good reasons to fire someone. However imagine if only one member of the band wanted the keyboard player fired. They would have no power unless the rest of the members agreed. A lead singer like Steve Perry or Jon Bon Jovi can do that to their band. If you dont agree with my terms, I quit. The band cant perform without their lead singer. Of all those years of Fleetwood Mac trying to make it look like Stevie was not the lead singer i.e. only giving her 3 songs per album and never giving her a lead off single, etc came back to haunt them. The chickens came back to roost and the band wilted like a dead flower. Stevie really was saying, its my band, I call the shots, its my way or the highway. Worse still is she let Mick do the deed almost like a mafia boss.

That reminds me...I should add to my list:
"I'm not the boss of this band"...REALLY fake
I would have had way more respect for all of them had they just explained exactly what happened (I know, that was never going to happen) The PR spin job they attempted to pull off was so cringe worthy and not even done well.

She’s been in my head a lot for decades but, like you, she’s in it even more now. Decades ago, I bought a bunch of band photos of the Kiln House tour band, a couple of Heroes tour pics, and a couple of 1975 pics. The ones with her on them are displayed in my house. I stop and fade at them the way I would for a lost relative.

Even if I agreed with all the things you just said, the simple fact is that a band with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie is Fleetwood Mac. Regardless of who else is in the band. I don’t understand the logic that because one member of the band was fired means they’re no longer FM, especially considering said member wasn’t even a founding member; ergo, it was Fleetwood Mac BEFORE Lindsey was a member, so naturally it would be Fleetwood Mac after Lindsey wasn’t a member, whether he chose to leave or was kicked out.
The idea that Mick, John, and Christine should have changed the name of their band because Lindsey was gone is ridiculous. The Go-Go’s didn’t change their name when they fired Kathy Valentine (which was a good thing because they made up and she rejoined a few years later); Chicago has had a number of members quit or be let go, and it’s still Chicago. Applying that same logic, shouldn’t Mick, John, Stevie, and Lindsey have changed the band name when Christine left and they recorded Say You Will? Why don’t folks call that incarnation of the band Fakewood Mac. It’s the double standard that perplexes me.

I was listening to Classic Vinyl yesterday driving and they played Over my Head. After the song, the DJ said it's still a punch in the gut that Christine is gone, and then also mentioned Jeff Beck and Lisa Presley.
It's just surreal and I can't imagine what John and Mick are going through.
I know Lindsey respected and loved Chris also, I am looking forward to his next album, Oh the stories he will tell. I'm never sure about Stevie. I know she is heartbroken, but I'm sure she is thinking about her own mortality. How long do I have? It's just beyond sad that Chris is gone and we never got a final Fleetwood Mac album. Her songs take on a whole new meaning for me. And Fleetwood Mac becomes more Christine to me every day since her passing. She's definitely not dead, she's flown.
What a beautiful body of work she's left behind. On top of that, she's not tarnished her legacy with power greed, fame greed. She just stood back, wrote songs, played her music and gave us gold and a bunch of sass. She's truly my hero.

They sang Don’t Dream It’s Over, Free Falling, and I Got You, and then dropped I Got You. So they’re not Fleetwood Mac because they sang two covers on the same tour? Like when they performed Blue Letter and the Farmer’s Daughter when Lindsey was with them? Those were cover songs as well. I think two or even three cover songs is pretty tolerable in a setlist of 22-24 songs, and hardly makes it a cover band. And for all the outrage people had about them singing cover songs, there were others who were just as outraged they performed any of Lindsey’s songs. The same reason they played “I’d Rather Go Blind,” “Get Like You Used To Be,” “Don’t Let Me Down Again,” and (briefly) “Frozen Love.”
Also, “Tear It Up,” “The Bigger the Love,” “We Just Disagree,” “Only You Know & I Know,” “Feelin’ Alright,” and “Dear Mr. Fantasy.”
ETA: And “Stand Back,” “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You,” “Go Insane” (OOTC tour acoustic version), and “Go Insane” (full band version).

It was a train wreck burnt offering conspiracy. If Lindsey punched Stevie in the face and he was fired, many could understand and handle that. But we got drip by drip falsehoods and lies about this "new" band. Eh, I’m not sure Mick wasn’t being serious about it being a “new band” (new chapter would have been more appropriate, but I’m not nitpicking something a 70-something says). I legitimately think he thought adding Mike and Neil would lead to a new album and maybe another run of live shows beyond the 18-19 tour. I mean, if I was trying to lure Stevie into the studio, I’d start with Mike Campbell, too. And Neil seems like he’d be easygoing enough to make it an enjoyable process.

Anything that would’ve given us another album of Mick, John, and Christine together would’ve been fine with me.
It’s just humorous to me that fans of the TENTH incarnation of Fleetwood Mac are calling the 18-19 band Fakewood Mac. At least the Peter Green fans had a credible reason for saying that anything that came after Peter quit wasn’t really Fleetwood Mac.

We definitely disagree on that one. IMHO Mick could barely say that with a straight face. He was saying that trying to prop up the big lie. He was trying to give credibility for his actions. DID NOT BELIEVE A WORD OF IT

The old damned if they do, damned if they don’t dilemma.
FM actually performed DDIO, IGY, and FF towards the end of the tour as well when the setlist was 20 songs.
Blue Letter was first released by Fleetwood Mac. It's like Talk To Me - that's a Stevie song. Blue Letter is a FM song. Farmer's Daughter is not an FM song.
I think those three covers should've been rare Stevie songs or even Billy or Rick songs instead. They really should have been new FM songs
Bottom line, there should have been at least one newly recorded song in the 2018 setlist. They were able to do it in 2013. No reason why they couldn't in 2018.
