View Full Version : What can Stevie do to win back the many long time fans she’s lost the last few years?

I actually thought those lines were about the deaths of his father and brother. In his world they wouldn't have died and he wouldn't be left with things he wished he had told them while they were still alive.
You may well be correct, however I think the beauty of the lyric is in its potential to be interpreted in a range of ways.

On the topic of Lindsey's violence, I can't help wondering what his kids must think when they hear these things about their father. It must be so awkward. I wonder, have they ever discussed it?
As for the father of Stevie's children, we know Don Henley was the dad at least once and I've heard from multiple sources he's a major jerk and womanizer.
Many on these boards would not object to an equivalent description of Stevie Nicks - you know I am sure some of the haters would love to brand her as a bitch and a woman guilty of misandry.

In the same way you’re portraying him as a man responsible of his own sacking because of his..... lyrics and comments????

That's your interpretation of my comments. It isn't true to the spirit of what I was trying to say, but hey, I realise things are not always interpreted the way the speaker intended them to be.
All I was saying is he was actually sacked for substantive issues. No, it was not fair, and I would believe it or not, prefer that he was out currently touring with his band of 43 years with his ticker intact. But was he an innocent angel preyed upon by the evil witch who wrote Rhiannon? NO, he was not.

The ethical question of wife-beating is a binary one. Abortions are also quite binary for me, but not all and I think the political debates it raises have been bandied about long enough here. This is not really the place for that discussion. It has been a fair topic in the Stevie section for many years as a reflection on her song lyrics and life at that time, but used here to win Lindsey points ... that ship has sailed. We can find other things to discuss about her.

That’s your interpretations of things. None of them actually said the reason of his ousting, so unless you have talked to Mick or Stevie or someone close to the band, you have no idea of the real reason. That’s what we’re all waiting to hear.

Regardless of the reason, whether it was that he let off a foul smelling odour at Music Cares, and could not be trusted not to fart on stage during the upcoming tour. Or whether he truly was trying to juggle solo and band projects instead of committing fully to the band and putting solo stuff on hold. It doesn't matter. In any scenario, for any reason, he cannot be a guiltless party. He is not perfect. Despite what you may think.

Do you not honestly think that they would love to broadcast what these substantive issues were??
They would love to have this stuff to say, esp Stevie.
Except all they have is that Stevie wants to dance and be happy, and then lies.
Lies lies lies.
So, I respectfully disagree that there is any substantive reasons. It’s more like petty reasons by a petty old lady who is lonely and miserable.

You think I was joking about his foul smelling farts. I could smell them twenty metres from the stage at On With the Show at Qudos Bank Arena in 2015. If that's not a substantive reason, I don't know what is. I could even, if I squinted, see Christine crinkling her nose in disgust. And she loves Lindsey.

Lindsey isn't perfect, and neither is anyone else in the band. To justify his firing, he would have to do something much worse than what anyone else in the band has ever done. Which has not been forthcoming.
Lindsey may be difficult to work with, but I don't think Stevie's a peach to work with either. Her diva tendencies have been getting progressively worse over the years, and she seems to be close to full-on Norma Desmond territory.
We're allowed to critique the band for their decision. The band was broken up, apparently because Lindsey and Stevie basically can't get along. But Lindsey didn't issue an ultimatum, Stevie did, and that's where she did something wrong. There's plenty of things on Stevie's side of the column to justify her firing, so how does she have the chutzpah to basically demand Lindsey's firing? And to not have the decency to tell him herself?
Apparently, the other 4 got along just fine without her, and I think BuckVie is a large part of what precipitated this. I initially took her comments to the press at face value, but I think now it's pretty clear that project rankled her.

From memory, Stevie's comments about Buckingham McVie immediately prior to its release were (not a direct quote): I'm sure it will be great, cos Christine's super inspired.
No remarks about Lindsey. Just, Christine is feeling inspired. No comment as to why she wasn't involved, except for an offhand remark that she is really busy with her solo tour.
Rankled? That's an understatement.

I think it really upset her. But maybe it wasn't the album itself. Maybe it was how Lindsey talked about the album. Did he bring up the fact that it was a Fleetwood Mac album without Stevie? I didn't get a chance to read all those articles at the time. Maybe Stevie wouldn't have cared if the album had been framed as a real Buckingham + McVie album, a side project. But if Lindsey said it was a Fleetwood Mac album with a missing Stevie, she might be mad about that. It paints her in an unfortunate light: a songwriter who can no longer write.

The fact that BuckVie was meant to be a FM album from the beginning was not mentioned until the lawsuit. We all had suspicions but that was the first time it was confirmed.
Christ, he couldn’t have been more considerate with her feelings. And she paid him back so nicely!

If you listened to anything I had to say, you would know that I enjoyed my perfect line up at Allphones Arena (now called Qudos Bank Arena) in Sydney, on October 24 (I think) 2015.
If you bothered to ask, you'd know that I am unlikely to go see "your perfect line up" as the ticket prices are ridiculously somehow higher than they were in 2015 for an inferior product.
Now David, he never said that. Lindsey and Christine tried very hard to frame their album as a duet, saying things like oh we just naturally thought of bringing Mick and John in to work on our album, not because it was Fleetwood Mac, but because they're just a great rhythm section.

The fact that Lindsey said in 2013 that Sad Angel, It Takes Time and Miss Fantasy were ALL about Stevie Nicks, leads me to speculate that In My World, which was first cut with Mick and John in 2012 at the same time as the three EP tracks he wrote... is also about Stevie Nicks.

Yes I named my account after a Stevie Nicks solo song, but I fell in love with Fleetwood Mac as a band before I even knew the name of their lead singer. So it upsets me greatly that they have disbanded the Rumours 5, but at the same time, I am very angry when Ledgies accuse "that woman" of causing Lindsey's heart attack, as that is BOLLOCKS. Without trying to draw too long a bow, saying she caused the heart attack would be a little like me blaming my ex-girlfriend for my bipolar affective disorder diagnosis.

I am tired of hearing about Stevie’s alleged abortions in this context. If you want to discuss abortions further, do it in Chit Chat.
I do not think the questionable Vox interview or the cat is out of the bag comments are off limits. They have been discussed ad nauseum in the Stevie forum. But enough of throwing abortions out there as proof of what an awful person she is. Make your points some other way.

It’s more like petty reasons by a petty old lady who is lonely and miserable.
Well... *was* lonely/miserable. In all honesty, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the woman happier. Anyone else who has gone to see this tour notice how upbeat she is? I’ve seen her (and the rest of FM) many, many times. And for the last few years, it’s almost always been from the very front row (was one of the girls they’d bring up to LB’s mic stand for the 2013 tour & OWTS tour). I’ve seen her look pretty f’in miserable at times, she isn’t great at hiding it. I’m sure it was not always due to Lindsey. I remember once we were front row for one of those early morning talk show concert tapings and she just looked absolutely unpleasant and grumpy the whole time, clearly wasn’t his fault, she was just exhausted. Hell, there were even some 24k gold shows I thought she seemed bored/tired/unhappy. But sometimes it was clear she was annoyed with LB specifically. You look at that rolling stone article from last tour when he’s pounding on the walls and sending representatives to tell her to turn her music down, and she’s just rolling her eyes and bitching about how she never wants to be nextdoor to Lindsey’s hotel room ever again. There were also times on that tour where he would be talking to us girls at the front and not listening to her talking, which she would react to in a very visually annoyed fashion (on a couple of occasions she’d call him out verbally - once literally just saying “are you even listening to me?”). It’s probably an equal part “because of Lindsey”/“because of other sh*t” ratio when it comes to the causes of her grumpiness the last few tours.
However, this tour is something else. I remember coming home from one of her shows years ago with a good friend. We watched her set from Woodstock 98 when we got back and we just kept saying to one another “damn what happened to *this* Stevie?” (I think her joy that night was more based on some kinda intoxicant than anything else lol, but still that was just a kind of happy smiley silly Stevie we hadn’t seen in ages). Me & that same friend just returned home from the current tour and we both agreed that for the first time in a long time, it felt like we had *that* Stevie back. The Stevie with the infectious smile who actually seems to think of the show as “fun” and not “work”. Honestly, everyone seems like they were having a ton of fun. Even Chris. And especially Mick.
I don’t really know what that means. Maybe Stevie’s really vengeful and is just invigorated and overjoyed that she finally “won” the battle of FM. Maybe it’s less dark than that and she’s just really having fun bringing her good friend Mike with on tour. Maybe everybody else just seems so happy because they’re used to a miserable Stevie, and when she’s happy it makes their lives easier and more fun. I suppose it’s also entirely possible that LB really was a kind of toxic presence in the band (or just toxic when combined with Stevie) and it’s a more carefree, peaceful atmosphere now with less drama.
I don’t claim to know what they’re thinking. And i’m sad that LB got the short end of the stick and is battling all these severe health issues. That being said, it did feel kinda nice to see the band having so much fun and Stevie actually being pleasant and joyful. Was kind of refreshing. I do hope the band and LB eventually mend fences though. This kind of split is not how I envisioned the band’s final years.

Some fans just act plain dumb sometimes. "She engineered Lindsey's firing and is now in complete control of Fleetwood Mac" Give me a break!
Do you really think STEVIE NICKS is in complete control of Fleetwood Mac? Have you forgotten about someone called FLEETWOOD and someone called MAC-vie?
Stevie was only able to see Lindsey get fired because of Mick Fleetwood's agreement, and John McVie's ambivalence. If John had taken a stand, and his ex-wife had backed him up, saying something like "the McVies will quit Fleetwood Mac if Lindsey is not reinstated"... then Lindsey would most definitely have been reinstated.
Blaming Mick and Stevie is the easy way out for fans of Christine and John. Let's face it, they are equally culpable. Yes Christine sent Lindsey a very kind hearted email apologising for what happened, but does that absolve her of all responsibility? I think not. And John sent Lindsey an email, too, saying simply "I am told that I cannot talk to you"... how cowardly is that?
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WM7-PYtXtJM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
"Well I've been afraid of changing... cause I, I built my life around you. But time makes you bolder. Children get older. And I'm getting older, too." Doesn't that sum her up? She built her life around Lindsey. And it nearly killed her. Something snapped. Like a child, she issued her ultimatum. A seventy year old child, having a temper tantrum.
But, it never would have been possible without the agreement of Mick, the ambivalence of John, and the weakness of Christine.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SdmuP915hCs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Hm, would it have killed her to throw in a line about Lindsey, if she couldn't bring herself to dedicate the whole song to him instead of a 12 year old bassist? That said, she looks even happier and more radiant in the 2019 version of Landslide than the 1997 version. Sure, she does look 20 years older in the 2019 clip. And her blonde hair ages her more than the brunette locks of The Dance. But she looks sad in The Dance. In An Evening With Fleetwood Mac, she sings Landslide almost joyously.

Like you said, I think the rest of the band is happy because they don't have to deal with bitchy Stevie, and there's no more bitchy Stevie because Lindsey's not there. I don't think the Brits care very much how to make her happy. If the only way to accomplish that is to fire Lindsey, then fine by them. That's how I perceive all of them right now. Whatever it takes to make her happy. It's truly her band now. They're all at her mercy now.
I think Stevie and Lindsey's relationship was and will always be toxic. So she's certainly happier now that he's not there anymore. But a part of me wonders what's gonna happen once the tour is over. I mean, you did all of this just to be happier while on tour? You ruined a 50+ years family relationship just to be happier on your last tour? Really?
She's clealy not thinking straight or she was faking it all these years. I think at this point of this mess all Lindsey cares about is to understand her reasons and to end his years in a civilized way with all of them, but especially with Stevie. This is more than just a band relationship, at least to him. F*ck the band and f*ck the tour.
But unfortunately, you can't underestimate Stevie's hate for Lindsey. And he learnt it the hardest way.

I remember my mom and I saw the band on their EP tour. Afterwards, she said she thinks Stevie is showing the beginning stages of dementia since she keeps forgetting things. My great grandmother had dementia and as it got worse so did her attitude. I dunno. Just something to think about.

1. Reanimate her aborted children.
2. Unfire Lindsey.
3. Give all of Tom Petty's bandmates heart attacks so they won't attempt to join Fleetwood Mac.
4. Cure heart disease.
5. Precede each song with a lengthy apology, but not TOO lengthy, because, jeeze, we don't want Lindsey smirking again.
6. Feed herself to her dogs.
7. PROFIT!

She’s always been like that though. Of all the people i’ve seen in concert, she makes the most mistakes by far. It’s not new. She’s forgetful and kind of ditzy, always has been. Lots of her bootlegs from way back in the day have tons of mistakes and screwed up lyrics. I remember the one tape from the Wild Heart tour, she ends one song with “and I actually don’t know what song is coming now, I need to ask somebody”. I loved a few tours ago when the lights went down after one song and the rest of the band walked backstage (as they were all supposed to), when the lights came back on she was still standing there (now alone) and just laughs and says “sometimes I don’t know where I am.” That’s just Stevie. Always spaced out.

Yeah, she’s always talked about the men in the band bending to the will of the girls just to pacify them and make life easier. She always made it seem like it was she and Chris as a team who were coddled and spoiled and made a priority. I remember in one of the limo tapes Mick is in a sh*t mood and Stevie keeps saying “well the girls are happy and that’s all that matters”. And then there’s quotes like “If there was a presidential suite the girls got it. Or two presidentials, we got them, me and Chris. That was the way of the world. I think the boys bitched about that, but in the long run it was like: Happy wife, happy life. Happy girls, happy world. Happy Chris and Stevie, life is easy.”
But i’ve always felt like while she includes Chris in her “we girls are the priority” lines, Chris probably wouldn’t have said the same or described it that way at all. I doubt she was ever the “priority” to the guys the way that Stevie always was (and is). I think Chris seems pretty easy to work with and isn’t as coddled and spoiled by the guys as Stevie. She probably just includes her in those stories because it makes her feel less b*tchy to say “OUR happiness is the most important” than to admit that in reality it’s all just Stevie’s demands and happiness that everybody is working around.

Indeed, there's a video interview in which Chris says something about being 'pampered' and then catches herself and says "Well, not really 'pampered' but they did carry the odd suitcase" for her. This was pre Stevie. You know Chris was in there mucking in and setting up her keyboards etc before Stevie joined. I'll bet my mortgage Stevie NEVER carried and amp or even helped set up her own mic stand even in the BN days. She's too precious.... and would have batted her eyelashes and flirted with the men to get them to do for her. Which makes a lot of her feminist ranting lately kinda hilarious. She was quoted back in the day re going out with Don Henley and being around the Eagles that she was just "quiet, and feminine, and tricked them to death".

I never intimated that the rest of Fleetwood Mac were not to blame for Lindsey's firing as well.. they are.. She is in control because of the greed of the others. She counted on that to get her way so yes she is control of the band as she is the difference between playing arenas or mid sized casinos and other much smaller venues for lower ticket prices. It is all about the $$.

For me there's nothing she can do to win me back, even if Lindsey got back into the band. She broke up the band, for me there is NO "new" Fleetwood Mac and I got her to thank for it. The legacy is all tainted now all because of her and her ultimatums.

I would like to agree that it wasn’t Christine to, especially because Stevie described how Christine had to sleep on top of the instruments in the backseat of the car in the early days. On the other hand, in the very beginning I don’t think Stevie had so much power that she could make demands on her own. And she was shy her then because she thought that if push came to show of and the band have to choose, they might still choose Lindsey over her. Second we’ve heard the rumors of Christine having a piano and champagne in her hotel room. I think she was coddled to, to an extent.
But you know Lindsey taking off in France and leaving them to do interviews and Christine whining to Daddy Mick about it is one of my favorite videos. Lindsey says he is hungry and they say have a cheese omelet and he yelps, “I don’t want a cheese omelette. I want French food” and he leaves with his gf draped around him like a scarf. They were all spoiled, except for John, maybe.

Well, if it were me, I'd do it because I would want to promote a current thing by focusing on the future of the new band rather than year old news. Is there anything she can do? She’s refused to record a new album, had Lindsey kicked out, has become a dictator...
Could anything redeem her in her lost fan base and Fleetwood Mac’s fanbase? The question needs to be asked.
Personally, I think she needs to show some humility. That might help. She seems like a taker and I think she needs to start giving, without wanting anything in return.
she needs to get rid of her girl!Posse ...particularly Karen
she needs to actually tell the truth
starting with the exact date she started "not" being the boss of the band.

Let’s face it, without The Dance, the five of them would be forgotten totally. Which is why it’s so preposterous and unthinkable that post-The Dance, any of the Rumours 5 would be fired and replaced in Fleetwood Mac.

Aussie shows always have abt 10 dates
this tour has 13
SYW had 11 shows
Unleashed (heap of junk tour) had 9 dates
OWTS had 13
i looked at tix for 2 days of each city/ all the 4 day shows
and tix aren't even remotely close to being sold out
in Melbourne especially, that is unheard of.
only the Saturday show is remotely close to being "sold out" and vaguely the Sat sydney show.

The Buckingham Nicks shippers have modified their fantasies over the years. It started with Lindsey and Stevie being in love with each other, but being unable or unwilling to consummate it permanently because things were so hot. As it became obvious to all but the most obtuse weirdos that Lindsey and Stevie were NOT in love with each other—as she chased down women friends and professional stature and he got married and started his family—the story transmogrified. They were deeply passionate about each other, but not in an entirely sexual way. It was a spiritual bond, a "partnership" of souls, a meeting of minds, a personal and career support network, whatever. Of course, the two of them backed it all up by saying these things in print and onstage. (Meanwhile, neither of them ever picked up a phone and called the other during off-season.)
you forgot the psychos that think Stella (and / or LeeLee are) is Stevie's kid.
I was (am) a BN shipper ... a fairly sane one but I don't think EVERY SINGLE THING was always an act. I also don't think that they NEVER picked up a phone and called each other. there are many examples of Lindsey saying something that contradicted something Stevie said (and I'm pretty sure they ALWAYS had a sit down to get their faux stories straight). I mean, why make an issue out of how CLOSE you live to each other. and he spent WAY more time with her on IYD than she admitted to. and there's a whole bunch of other suss stuff that I just can't be bothered typing about coz i have sadly, stopped caring.
In my deepest of darkest delusions I would love for this all to be an "act" and that Lindsey (for whatever fkn RIDIC reason) agreed to x amount of monetary payment and slamming in the press and hate ... to "leave" the band so the focus on the "band" wasn't SnL and they could carry on being BN *outside* of the public eye.
but even this ex chiffon!head knows that Stevie is VERY "woke" despite the airy-fairy fake persona she exudes. and that deep down, she is ... let's face it, a duplicitous @ssHole

In my fantasy, they would all 5 care about each other and The Chain would be true. But they don't really care.

You didn't mean to meet her you cry
Oh but the sun goes down every night
She came to you when you were alone
And yes she matters to you
that damn Carol...errrrr Kristen....

the one moment that didn't *seem* totally fake to me was her crying throughout Say Goodbye at the MGM Grand on the final night of the SYW tour. But I think it's just her getting caught up in that moment, and then snapping back to reality, which she did when it ended.

i still think her crying then was about something or other completely different than whatever all fans speculate.
i find it highly amusing that the same people happy about not having to watch anymore fake Stevie-Lindsey interactions are also all too happy watching same interactions between Stevie and Neil. and the band exuding fake happiness. yet somehow, these people are buying the happiness and completely incredulous Stevie-Neil interactions that even reviewers are going wtf about.:woohoo:
i also find it completely weird that while most of us, both Lindsey and Stevie fans, complained about stale setlists for FM shows and couldn't wait for solo shows of either for either new stuff or deep cuts, now some of those same Stevie fans are ecstatic seeing the same stale greatest hits set from Stevie, with even less of her songs and none of her deeper cuts, just a few covers thrown in.

She's a drama queen, and, I believe, works that sh*t up just for the audience. They lap it up, and the old goat knows that.
If i'm thankful for ONE thing, it's that I NEVER have to watch that RIDICULOUS hand holding/ fake romance on stage again. It was pathetic. They only thing more pathetic is the morons who ate it up!

I don't think SnL was all fake. But, at this point, that's cold comfort.Since the Dance, it's been a combination of a little play that they do onstage during certain songs, like Landslide and the Chain, where they act out their little erotic glances and glares, and a genuine sense of musical and historical connection, and because that connection is so old, it can't help feeling deep and abiding (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-exHBjy3Egw).
But the next day when the concert's over and the stage lights are off, it's a cold splash of water when Lindsey pounds on the wall because you're playing your JT songs too loudly.
It's a fractious connection; it's like two powerful horses tethered together, both magnificent, but always trying to yank away from each other.

you know, i'm always wondering about that one. the only story about that came Karen. she went out, there was a bang on the wall, and then Karen came back blaming it on Lindsey. do we even know Lindsey was really next door during that interview?:wavey:

except now she's acting it out with Neil, and that's just totally mucked up.
In fact, she's be re-enacting the Landslide performance from The Dance with any guitar player she can find. That has always grossed me out.

It only shows what a fantastic liar she is. She sold the stupid idea of how special Landslide is because it’s about Lindsey and she wrote if for him. But she has no problem playing it with anybody she can find and dedicating it to anybody but him on this tour.
That only shows how much she despises him.

Just remember that it has always only been an act. Fleetwood Mac long ago stopped being a real band and became more like a Broadway musical.
For the record, I could easily live without Landslide or any of the other fake interactions.

well what I hate is the whole posing onstage the exact same way--- the guitarist standing where LB stood, her looking over at whoever it is in the same way she turned to LB during the recorded show, the whole frigging thing.:distress:

Who knows why, but she probably only knows those scripted moves for each song. For instance, someone surely has told her the crack head dance is utterly ridiculous and embarrassing. Then again, maybe not??:shrug:

Yeah, you were on a stage somewhere with this same person in 1968. That has got to make you feel something, even if it’s not deep and abiding love.
Now, I don’t think I have ever seen them look at each other erotically, but looks of understanding, synchronicity, even though if it’s just about stage cues.
Then, they step off stage and it’s over.
When the stage is dead and empty
And the band had all gone home
When the lights go out what's it
All about sitting there on your own.

i don't think she was crying about anything related to the song or the moment either. but i don't like watching that video and refuse to because i think that's one of the only 100% genuine moments they had.

Everyone is so eager to burn the witch. maybe if Lindsey had just beaten her more or choked her out more or taken even more credit for her songs than he does already.....she wouldn't be so quick to react. I love LB, he's a genius. but he is a ****ing dick. He's a very talented man, but an asshole.
and frankly, the 3 brits could have said , "Stevie STFU! Calm down, oi!"
They are not that stupid to be bullied by her. They want the cash. I doubt John wanted to deal with him anymore. Mick has always been a hypocritical reactionary drama queen. he loves this ****.
she probably regrets it, but mid-tour you want her to be like , "i am sorry my voiceless, abusive ex lover. i caused yr hereditary cardiac issues! i told the doc to give you a tracheotomy so that you would have a voice like mine.....devoid of tone or warmth......this tour is a mistake, please forgive me America ....please go away you other two. you will never be my Lindsey...." give me a break. and who really wants buck/nicks remastered and finally released. LB would tweak and make it sound like ****. their tv appearances would be embarrassing.
he is a woman beater who refused to support his woman. he just wanted to play his guitar, hang out with waddy or olsen and talk about pussy while his old lady slung tables and scrubbed toilets. and then he wanted to **** around. "why can't the bitch accept that?? stevie take off yr shirt and show some titties! that sells records.....bitch".
sorry for the swearing.

You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel.
You're a monster, Stevie Nicks.
Your hearts an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul,

You're a vile one, Stevie Nicks.
You have termites in your smile.

Given the choice between the two of you,

You're a foul one, Stevie Nicks.
You're a nasty, wasty skunk.
Your heart is full of unwashed socks,
Your soul if full of gunk, Stevie Nicks.
The three words that best describe you

"Stink, Stank, Stunk."
You're a rotter, Stevie Nicks.
You're the queen of sinful sots.
Your hearts a dead tomato splot,
with moldy purple spots, Stevie Nicks.
Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing
with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable
rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots.
You nauseate me, Stevie Nicks.
With a nauseaus super-naus.
You're a crooked jerky jockey

You're a three decker saurkraut and toadstool
sandwich, with arsenic sauce.

REVIEW: Fleetwood Mac's farewell tour at Wells Fargo Center is great goodbye, bedeviled by details
PHOTO GALLERY: Fleetwood Mac's farewell tour at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center
John J. Moser John J. MoserContact Reporter
Of The Morning Call
First the distant view of Fleetwood Mac’s performance at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Friday, on what the group says is its farewell tour.
The show was a two-hour-and-five-minute evening of 21 songs that included 13 of Fleetwood Mac’s Top 20 hits – virtually all of which held up as timeless music. It also played, as would be expected on a farewell tour, tunes from throughout its 52 years as a band and some interesting additions.
And it put each band member in the spotlight.
But the devil was in the details, as they say.
Up closer, singer/guitarist/songwriter Lindsey Buckingham, who was fired from the band for resisting plans for the tour (and who was since incapacitated by open-heart surgery) was badly missed multiple times, especially on some signature songs. It showed how much Buckingham meant to the band.
Despite that, there was no mention of Buckingham at all through the entire night.
Replacement guitarist Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was a fine player, but never quite captured what Buckingham added to his songs, and was badly under-used for half the show.
Much the same could be said for vocal replacement Neil Finn of Crowded House, who in some instances clearly tried to replicate Buckingham but fell short.
The democratization of the spotlight also occasionally gave the show a stilted, trying-too-hard feel.
The show opened with “The Chain” – among seven songs from the band’s most successful album, 1977’s “Rumours,” and the only tune credited to all its members. It was as if the band was making the statement that, despite Buckingham’s absence, it was still an unbroken chain.
It was the first song on which Finn clearly tried to approximate Buckingham’s voice and Campbell tried to display his playing chops. Both were good, but not Buckingham. His vocals were especially missed on “Second Hand News.”
The show was loaded with hits from the start: “Little Lies” and “Say You Love Me” featuring Christine McVie on vocals and the huge hits “Dreams” and “Rhiannon” featuring Stevie Nicks.
Both vocalists sounded diminished, or at least tentative; Nicks singing in a noticeably lower range and in a much broader voice rather than her nuanced 2016 performance at Sands Bethlehem Event Center.
She was in better voice on “Gypsy,” actually hitting high notes, and got a huge cheer for a simple twirl in her lacy black dress, but even Buckingham’s echoed vocals were missed in that song. And Campbell played the distinctive Buckingham guitar chimes, but not as well.
McVie took center stage to sing “Everywhere,” which a third of the way through was the song that to that point best captured the entire essence of Fleetwood Mac.
But, as was the case through much of the night the songs were just so good they were very enjoyable – though not always as deserving of the lavish response the nearly sold-out ground showered on them.
Ironically, even with two guitarists replacing Buckingham, it was an added guitarist (extra keyboardist, percussionist and two singers also were added) who played the guitar line on “Little Lies.”
Six songs into the set, Campbell – strangely sidelined to that point – had a chance to cut loose on “Black Magic Woman,” which was a hit for Carlos Santana but originally a Fleetwood Mac song from the band’s Peter Green era.
Later, Campbell had even more space on Green’s 1969 tour de force “Oh Well,” and Campbell took it – and wailed.
In recognition of Finn’s career, he played a solo acoustic version of his Crowded House hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” that was a great song, but an odd fit for Fleetwood Mac – a point brought home when Nick joined him at the end and showed it was the wrong song for her.
But the pair’s performance of “Landslide” was among the best songs of the show, with Nicks holding a long, long note at the end to great cheers.
“Hold Me” and “Monday Morning” were two more songs that were great – the former another highlight of the show -- but were weaker without Buckingham’s voice. But Campbell’s guitar shined on both.
Drummer Mick Fleetwood was given the spotlight for a 10-minute solo and spotlight on the early (1975) “World Turning,” and while he owned it – even stepping out from behind the kit to play a bongo center stage – it felt a bit obligatory.
Christine McVie and Nicks each got the spotlight late in the show – McVie on “You Make Loving Fun,” which was payed tougher than the original and on which Campbell ripped and Nicks on her showcase: a 12-minute, foreboding and ominous version of “Gold Dust Woman.”
That song featured by far Nicks’ best singing as, donning a gold shawl, she wailed and spit lyrics. And it was hard not to think she was talking to Buckingham when she forcefully sang, “Can’t take me down/Can’t shake me.”
It made it obvious that the show could have been far more Nicks-centric, and perhaps would have been better for it (the show skipped her great songs “Sara” and “Seven Wonders”). But the group clearly made the effort that it not be.
And it was especially hard not to hear the song that closed the main set, “Go Your Own Way,” as being directed at Buckingham – although it was ironic that it was his song and was among the ones that most missed his vocals.
The encore opened with the acknowledgement of Campbell on Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” with Nicks on vocals and Campbell recreating his guitar part as a photo montage flashed behind them. It was a great version, but ironically also missed the original vocalist – Petty. (Also, a better choice might have been the Nicks/Petty duets “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” on which Campbell also played.)
And the night ended with what Christine McVie called “a little-known Fleetwood Mac song” – “All Over Again,” a 1995 deep cut sung by her and Nicks that McVie said was “about seeing changes and … celebrating it.”
It was a nod to all the changes Fleetwood Mac has been though in its career – including the latest one with Buckingham, and the band’s stated finale.
But the night’s penultimate song may have been the true statement of Fleetwood Mac. It was another “Rumours” hit that has propelled the band over the past 40 years: “Don’t Stop.”
And one couldn’t help but wonder whether Fleetwood Mac ever really will.
The band already is coming back to Wells Fargo Center on April 5.
