The Inside Scoop on the 2019 Rock Hall Ballot
October 15, 2018 08:04 PM Filed in: 2019 Ceremony | Rock Hall Politics
Nominating Committee member Alan Light joined DJs Nik Carter and Lori Majewski on SiriusXM to announce the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees last week. Light revealed fascinating information about the discussions in the nominating meeting that led to this year’s ballot. Here are some of the highlights:
Alan Light personally used his two picks to advocate for Janet Jackson and The Cure, and got both on the ballot.
Light felt that Janet Jackson deserved one more chance on the ballot this year because of increased exposure as a result of her tour and other awards.
The Nominating Committee has been rotating through The Cure, The Smiths and Depeche Mode on recent ballots, but Light felt the time was right to give The Cure another chance because of their 40th anniversary shows and other publicity.
When asked why Judas Priest wasn’t nominated again after doing well in the fan poll last year, Light revealed that they had done “horrendously” in the actual Voting Committee tally, so they decided to shift the focus to Def Leppard.
Majewski mentioned that the Nominating Committee now has 30 members -- 23 men and seven women (up from six last year). Light said there were 28 people in the room this year (Seymour Stein was calling in from L.A., as revealed on the Who Cares About the Rock Hall? podcast.)
Light stressed that the Nominating Committee crafts the ballot in a way where they try not to nominate artists who are in a similar lane, so as not to split the vote.
Alan Light regarding the Stevie Nicks nomination: ”In the Nominating room, Pat Benatar came up, Cyndi Lauper came up, The Go-Go's came up and the Eurythmics were in this conversation, and not that it comes down to this, but the women in the room really did start to coalesce around Stevie and push things that way out of the mix that was there. That was the one that --and it's silly to say that women are one piece of what's here-- when it's women of the 80s, I don't think you put Pat, Cyndi and Stevie on a ballot together in the same way that you don't put The Cure, The Smiths and Depeche on the ballot together. It was actually the women in the committee who sort of led the focus to Stevie out of that list.”
Alan Light said that Dave Grohl was responsible for getting Devo nominated this year and Paul Shaffer is behind The Zombies appearances on the ballot.
Light admitted that the Nominating Committee did in fact take the Rock Hall Museum’s Voice Your Choice visitor poll into account when considering the nominees. Stevie Nicks and Def Leppard were the top two leaders all summer and both were nominated. Rock Hall Foundation President Joel Peresman for some reason tried to deny the poll’s influence to the Plain Dealer, "The new in-museum voting system does not factor into the nomination process as the members of the nominating committee aren't made aware of that. And we rely on their independent thinking, which in this case happened to match up.”
Light mentioned that David Fricke has previously advocated for The Guess Who and that Stevie Van Zandt tries to nominate Procol Harum every year.
Rock Hall Museum President Greg Harris and Rock Hall VP of Education and Visitor Engagement Jason Hanley both joined the show to discuss the nominees. Each separately mentioned how cool it was that Stevie Nicks would become the first woman to be a multiple inductee.
Despite having written a book about him, Light didn’t think Jeff Buckley should be inducted into the Rock Hall.

Today on the Sirius XM channel Classic Rewind, DJ Kristine Stone played Silver Springs. When it ended, she mentioned that Stevie will be making history as the first woman inducted into the RRHOF twice. Then she added, "Take that Lindsey!" followed by a fake apology, "I'm sorry, but he has just rubbed me the wrong way for years."

I think that’s kind of funny,
I don’t know the dj in question and am not a taffetahead or whatever you are if you say a word against Lindsey...

I must say I'm still a rabid Stevie fan. I have an uncanny ability to erect a wall between the music and the person. Accordingly my enjoyment of her music has suffered not a whit.
Are we that scared of LB fans? LOL
Oh yeah....I’m quaking in my boots...
Seriously I’m a Stevie fan, I’m a Lindsey fan, but most a FMac fan..
And it’s funny to watch both sides.....sometimes stupid too.

so this doesn't shed any light on the actual calculation process regarding what are the hard criteria someone must meet to get in. Indeed, it seems to highlight that it is more of an emotional process, with the voters on the committee picking and advocating for people they "feel" strongly about and then persuading (or wearing down) the other nominating committee members to include that person. Not an objective, fact-driven process. :sorry:

Indeed, it seems to highlight that it is more of an emotional process, with the voters on the committee picking and advocating for people they "feel" strongly about and then persuading (or wearing down) the other nominating committee members to include that person. That's my impression. There might be a few guidelines (like the 25-year guideline), but these entertainment awards are mostly emotion-driven and fraught with alliances and other political gripes. (In that sense, they can be quite interesting as models of human behavior.) There is really no other way to hand out awards in the arts, whether it's the Oscars or a Nobel for literature. There's no objective measure of merit in the arts, as everyone knows by now. Novels and plays and pop songs aren't strings of programming syntax that either render or don't, and they aren't litmus paper that either turns blue or doesn't. We're stuck with our subjective responses to art—although we can document those responses persuasively or not. It's a lot more interesting to hear why people like or dislike Stevie or Debbie Harry than to give those artists a plaque. The former is intellect at work, the latter is a sales stack.

The character from "Sunset Blvd," Norma Desmond, is described in a sypnosis: "Ushered in by Max, the butler, Joe recognizes the woman as long-forgotten silent film star Norma Desmond."
The character is long forgotten, no longer popular and is a recluse in a run down dilapidated mansion.
Stevie is not forgotten, still sells-out concerts and not psychotic.
Just because her speeches are lengthy, a bunch of anti-Stevie members from the "Rumours" board call her Norma Desmond.
It's like another world on that board.
Some even blame Stevie for Lindsey's heart attack.
Soon she'll be blamed for global warming.
Yes, dear, the witch is gonna get'cha.
Evil Stevie.
That's mighty flattering that she takes up so much of people's time and energy on the "Rumours" board honestly.
hundreds of threads by the same group of people, saying the same thing over and over.

I wonder when she's had time for rehearsal? I know she has two days off, but she's also been touring for a few months. She must be exhausted.
I'm really hoping for the Wild Heart/Bella Donna medley. That arrangement is fresh, it sounds good with her current voice/range and its such a great representation of her career for this kind of event. Then she can do a monster hit after. I'm excited to see this!

But she really needs to be at the top of her game, on key, and energetic. The audience will expect it. It'll be a tougher audience than in 1998, when Fleetwood Mac was just coming off a No. 1 album.
She could wear some color, too. You have to sparkle on TV.

Not a single thing after 1983, and 3 out of 4 released in 1981 all from same (first) solo album. Doesn't suggest any breadth or depth to her solo work .... the 'newest' thing on there is 36 years old, even though she had 6 more solo studio albums after 1983
Speaks to the detrimental effects of drugs on her creativity. Instead of harboring a grudge against the doctor who gave her Klonopin and bemoaning the albums she could have made, she should look in the mirror accept responsibility for all the lost songs and albums she could have made if she'd stayed even reasonably sober.:sorry:

Yeah ..she is pretty much the Elizabeth Taylor of rock stars ..she doesn't have to do anything new creatively to be famous.. Liz was a much better person though.

Liz did a lot of fabulous charity work... she raised MILLIONS for AIDS research.. and then raised more after her death with the auction of many of her fabulous jewels. Not saying iPods full of your music isn't nice........

Again ..she is not getting in as a solo artist for her body of work.

Hence why many think the RRHOF is a bit of a joke..... I mean, if it's not based on your body of work.... Otherwise it's just a popularity contest or a bribery contest.

Stevie's setlist for tomorrow...
1."Stand Back"
2."Leather and lace" (with Don Henley)
3."Stop Draggin' my heart around" (with Harry Styles)
4."Edge of seventeen"
I thought she was getting in as a solo artist?
If Prince and Tom were still here that would be
three out of four songs. If you know what I'm
saying.

Blondie, Journey, the Pretenders, Lindsey Ronstadt, Heart, Kiss, and many, many others haven't had hits in a long time but were still inducted. Does anybody know what FM played at their induction? I'm pretty sure whatever they performed, it was several decades old, too. How about the Rolling Stones? Did they play the #1 hit from their last album? No, because their last album didn't have a song that went to #1.

Agreed. After all, I'm sure nobody has ever leaned heavily on a 42 year old album *cough, Rumours* for their setlist. ;)

Yeesh... I guess 1 out of 3 isn't bad. I loved the redone version of SYLM for The Dance, but the other two seem like very selfish choices. I mean, the BAND was being inducted, and they picked 2 songs that are guitar-only... Not to mention the fact that the only reason SnL were able to be inducted in 1998 was because the band formed some 7+ years before they even joined.
Oh well, no sense getting annoyed about something that happened 21 years ago  but I had forgotten that was the setlist. I should know better though, the RRHOF live performances pop up on Spotify all the time. I guess I would have expected the Rhiannon-GYOW-Don't Stop mix they did for the Grammys, just not a medley.
As for Stevie's, it's not really a surprise. She's playing the hits. The only high-charting song of hers not on this list, Talk to Me, didn't age very well, IMO...

I agree, Go Your Own Way and Dreams would have been more appropriate choices. Big Love and Landslide, as performed by FM, come across more like solo songs.
I love Talk to Me, but she didn't write it, so I can see why she chose the songs she's doing. And yes, I'm aware she didn't write Stop Dragging My Heart, but I can see why she's singing that. First solo single and as a tribute to Tom Petty, who I have no doubt would have been the one to induct her in the Hall if he hadn't died.

It was a really strange set for them to do for the hall of fame. They had just finished a tour and could have played Go Your Own Way and The Chain in their sleep. Why they decided to do the two acoustic numbers (with three of the five members out of the picture) is a mystery we may never solve. Another big mystery that year was why Green (who was inducted as a Fleetwood Mac member) only performed with Santana (on Black Magic Woman). It was a weird situation all around, and Fleetwood Mac came out of it looking like freaks. That hall of fame is supposed to be a loose, fun celebration, but Fleetwood Mac's bad judgment turned it all dour. They are often their own worst enemy—have you noticed?

It would have been nice to hear them do “Oh Well,” with Peter and Lindsey.

It was the only one that didn’t have a post-induction jam.
That said, The Mamas & The Papas were even weirder. John Phillips wanted nothing to do with the others.

I couldn’t help but read some stuff on twitter. Apparently Stevie said that Harry Styles was a member of NSYNC, not One Direction and he inducted her!!!! LOL!!!!!!!

They have her full speech up at Rolling Stone. The usual cringeworthy stuff. Does she ever prepare at all?

Here's the part about Lindsey. He's really just mentioned in passing:
The second I called my mom and said, “I have to quit because me and Lindsey have to move to L.A., because the music is in San Francisco, and record deals are in L.A.. We have to go tomorrow.” My mom said, “Okay, that’s fine, but we will be withdrawing all financial support.” I said, flat out, “I know mom. I know, and I’m up to the challenge. Three waitress jobs, two cleaning lady jobs, it was cool.” Lindsey worked on the music, I worked on food and carrying glasses. I rather enjoyed it because I could get out of the house and go into the real world instead of being in the cave with all the guys who were just laying around smoking pot and messing up my house.
It’s like I go, “Excuse me? Excuse me? Can I just step over your feet and your pot and everything so I can straighten this place up?” I don’t get paid for doing this at my own house, but I will do it for you because I know you guys work hard. That’s just a little bit of a moment of how we got before Fleetwood Mac.

While introducing Leather and Lace, she said she wrote the song for Merle Haggard and Jessie Colter. I just cringed. It's Waylon Jennings Stevie. I hope it's fixed in post production. I also couldn't finish watching her speech.
When she got to the part about moving with Lindsey to California, I thought oh Lord, this is rambling along. I feel like she is just doing her onstage schtick.
I want authentic Stevie and I don't think we got it. But I will say what I have seen of the performances, she nailed it. Sounded great.
