View Full Version : In My World - 1st Buckingham/McVie single

On Friday we will all have our first taste of Buckingham McVie with the availability of "In My World" on iTunes.
According to various resources, this one is penned by Lindsey Buckingham.
That surprises me for a few reasons:
1. It's been longer since the world has heard new Christine
2. Christine is generally identified as the band's hitmaker
3. It's a "duets" album so I kinda thought a co-write would be first
So I'm intrigued to find out just how much presence Christine has on this track: vocally, on the keyboard.
Also, I'm intrigued to find out how it SOUNDS -- Because of the nature of the recording I don't know how much time Lindsey has had to tinker. Will this be a more polished sound than the new tracks on SWS and GoS?
How will the buying audience respond to this track?
Will it be something I hear in drug stores the way I still hear "Peacekeeper"?
WILL IT BE ABOUT STEVIE??!
The suspense is killing me.
I'm not at all surprised they went with LB's song. Judging from the info inside the sleeve, this (like almost every other FM release since 1979) is a solo album that got tweaked along the way. Hopefully it's more of a rocker than "Peacekeeper" was, but it'll probably be a similar, mid-tempo jam with prominent backing vocals from Christine.
And it better be polished as hell; he's had more than enough time to tinker. ;)

I'll bet they enjoy this small tour more than any they've ever done. I hope so, anyway.

The clutch of Lindsey songs stretches back quite a few years now so he's had plenty of time to tinker with them and get them just right. Though its deemed to be duets album, its clearly more of a Lindsey effort so I don't blame him for wanting to release one of his songs. Anyway, he might just have a great song with In My World that he thinks will go down particularly well as a single. Perhaps we'll get a Christine song a bit further down the line.
What I'm keen to know is what the promotion will be like for this single... are they going to be making any TV appearances???

I'm assuming Christine has a VERY bit presence on this song A la Hold Me, Think about me, Don't stop. Just because he wrote it doesn't mean it isn't a duet.

nope, exactly the opposite. from everything we know about these songs since 2012, it's a Fleetwood Mac album that got tweaked into BuckMcVie. those songs were all composed specifically for Fleetwood Mac.

She wrote those songs.
So you mean she will have a similar amount of presence on this song as he had on hers?
Interesting... possible!

i'm not sure what their relationship with the label is, but with LB's solo albums on WB he was very clear that he didn't understand why label picked certain songs as singles and that he had nothing to do with that... so who knows who picked this.

Just to add- historically speaking, its not really a surprise...
Go Your Own Way, Tusk, Big Love and Peacekeeper were all the lead-out singles.
Obviously Chris was always going to have the first single for the white album and LB just didn't have the material on Mirage.

LOL. Ever since I heard the new songs title, I can't get The Beatles title, "In My Life" out of my head.
Hey everyone!
Its also possible that this could still be a Christine lead vocal. Just because Lindsey wrote it doesn't necessarily mean he is singing lead on it. I'm thinking its possible it could also be a co-equal lead vocal, to emphasize the partnership.

Does it have a Christine presence?
It has a sense of intrigue about it - Christine's keyboards are atmospheric and almost menacing. Lindsey and Chris are in perfect synch again after all these years. It's a lovely, simple production with pristine harmonies and in my opinion, has hit written all over it.

Nope, it does sound softer though, not as harsh as Linds can tend to be. I feel this would be Christine's presence.
Christine appears to harmonise in the choruses but it's a subtle harmony. I hate to say it, but there are segments that would have been ideal for Stevie to slip into - a bit of a shame.

this is so funny ...you lucky Aussies!
Lindsey lead vocal on all the verses and subtle backing vocals from Chris during the choruses. However, Chris is all over it instrumentally - they blend extremely well.
Some of the instrumentation is reminiscent of the "Straight Back" production from Mirage.

With flourishes of Tango production.
It's too early to analyse the lyrics but there could be veiled references to farewelling Stevie and the people in Lindsey's world remaining loyal to him. A few backing vocals in the bridge are similar to the love grunts in "Big Love".

I wouldn't be so fast to assume all the keyboard parts are Christine's. Particularly synth parts. Lindsey played keys on Mirage and a lot of the synth / keyboard parts on Tango were Lindsey's. The piano and organ parts most likely Christine, but the more synthy, programmed things might be Lindsey, or Mitchell Froom, or a session player.
PS I bought it from iTunes Australia as an album track. "Red Sun" appears to be the next track released - it displays in blue whilst the remaining tracks appear in faded grey.

Just downloaded it from iTunes Philippines. At the risk of being a wet blanket/wowser I will admit to being unimpressed. It sounds like a less catchy version of You and I Part 2. It even has Big Love style grunts  at the 2 minute mark. Sad Angel was miles better than this.
There are a couple of 'hushed tones' here and there, but nothing as overtly annoying as the 'wispy, whispering vocals' we've become accustomed to hearing in recent times.

I doubt that would be the case on a duet album. Although, there is a lot of trickery with the guitar, keys, drums, bass through the producers.
She played a lot of the synths on Tango. It was they guitar voices (that sounded like keys) that he processed on Tango that you hear.
I can always tell if it's her by the style and listening to the left hand.

What strikes me is how clean and relatively 'unproduced' the track is, at least by Lindsey's standards. It's quite slick and radio-friendly but not bogged down in production. I'm liking it a lot at this early stage.
I liked "Sad Angel" a lot but it was clunky in parts whereas "In My World" tends to flow more easily, perhaps because of Christine's contributions.

Lyrics:
Fare-farewell
Heart of gold
Maybe we're lost
Without the cost
With stories that we've told
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world
Fare-farewell liberty
Maybe we're lost
Without the cost
Of who we used to be
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world
(love-grunts...)
Lay-lay down
Fall about
Take your time
To cross the line
All without a doubt
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world

Just heard it from iTunes preview on the Australian iTunes. I will say this. It's a good upbeat tune but if Stevie was singing on it then it would've been a hit. It's got that potential, it really has.
This just makes me even more frustrated at her absence.

First listen (VPNs are worth the investment!): I'd have expected to have more of Christine in the vocals for the first single so the lack prominent vocals is a surprise.
It's sonically softer than SWS, which is a good thing. That works for Lindsey solo but wouldn't mesh with Christine.
The chorus is super catchy.
Lindsey is still using the varispeed vocals that were on SWS. I like it here and on SWS but I know some people didn't (sorry, elle!).
Production notes: Lots of hard panning going on. It sounds like everything is close to left-centre-right. It's very wide when you listen on headphones. This is something I really, really like since it comes close to my day-job's niche.
On second listen: If Christine is here, she's very buried. I do agree that she's more present in the instrumentation in a very good way.
Probably more notes to follow.
EDIT: On third listen and I'm grooving away with a massive smile on my face :D
EDIT 2: It makes me think of Did You Miss Me from GOS as a lead single. It isn't that similar musically but both are good pop songs with enough of a quirk to keep them interesting. The only thing I could do without are the Big Love grunts, but I wonder if they aren't intentionally recalling that song for some reason. I haven't dug into the lyrics yet to see if there could be some reference.

Argh about varispeed, I really really hoped he'd grow out of that. Hate that he didn't and that Christine didn't make him stop with that. Also dislike possible similarity to DYMM, that song sounded like cheap pop formula to me... I really hope the parts of it reminds you of are not the parts I strongly dislike- such as DYMM chorus. This is not promising I was hoping for something more like sad angel or that's the way love goes, musically.

It's not as prominent as on a lot of the SWS stuff so maybe it'll be ok?
The song is definitely not a rocker like either of those but it is darker than DYMM. It's maybe more like End of Time. Or a mix between the two.
All I know is I've listened to it 17 times and I'm still enjoying it

It's really promising if you are enjoying it, hope that's not just because you've been deprived of new lb music since 2013! Darker than DYMM is good, although I was ambivalent on EOT - it is too adult contemporary sounding for my taste although I like the lyrics. Can't wait to hear!
Oh I suspect lot of keyboards in this one is Froom, not Christine, since this is one started in 2012, but who knows.

I think bass is John. It's a great bassline either way. Drums is a mix between drums that are potentially Mick (they're not too explosive) and wee percussive hits that jump left and right. Could equally be Mick or Lindsey-loops.
Overall, I lean to it being Mick.

What do you want to know and I'll try to answer.
My summary is that it is like the more poppy things from Lindsey's last two albums. I'm almost certain Christine is absent from the vocals. I think all of the backing vocals are Lindsey. Sounds like there are 3 of him in the chorus - lead vocal, a delayed/echo version and a slightly manipulated version further back.
Instrumentally it is driven by the rhythm section with a acoustic guitar picking over the top. There are synth/keyboards in the background and some piano licks in the instrumental sections.
It is really surprising Christine isn't prominent but you can feel her influence.

There is a Mick-esque beat going the whole time. I'm listening to the middle section where the vocals drop out and there are fills that sound like Mick.

I don't think it sounds much like something from Tango. It's much more organic than that. It's much more like Lindsey's recent stuff but with something new so that it wouldn't easily fit straight onto one of his albums.

What I'm hearing from people is that it sounds like a Lindsey solo single and not like a Fleetwood Mac single. If that is true, I will be very disappointed. Also, I was really hoping for Christine to b the lead singer on the first single. However keep in mind that Little Lies was the 3rd single off Tango and it's biggest hit.

I never got the impression that Stevie didn't want to participate because the music on the album sucked (which I very much doubt). She didn't want to be part of it because of record sales.
She said she was sure the music on the album was fantastic because it was Christine's. She never said anything about Lindsey.

Yup, it is a mediocre Lindsey solo single. It's not Countdown or even Trouble or (now for nostalgia de la boue) Holiday Road. And no Christine whatsoever. So much for it being the lead off single of a duet album. At least on Say You Will Lindsey let Stevie sing on some of his songs.

Its quite catchy and very dreamy. Christine definitely instrumentally but I can't hear her harmonies. As Fleetwood Maccy as much a LB can be....Big Love grunts a big turn off, but I quite like it.....certainly dont love it. Great to have new music nevertheless.

I'm just now listening to it. I HATE the Big Love grunts, miss Christines voice. It's mildly catchy, but nothing special or memorable.
EDIT: I just felt the need to listen to "Mystified", a song that I avoided like the plaque for nearly 30 years now.... That's not a good sign.
Still I'm hopeful that this one is just a teaser and good things will follow.
EDIT II: Mystified is still really bad, lousy and myleast favorite song. Bäh!

I've only heard a minute and a half clip, but I have to say what I heard was blessedly much better than anything from Extended Play or the This Is 40 soundtrack. Definitely a very Tango vibe to it, but still current sounding. I listen to lots of indie rock/pop, and this song definitely synchs up with what's currently en vogue in that realm right now. I find myself suddenly heartbroken this music didn't receive the Fleetwood Mac branding, though.

Good news! It's been added to the A playlist on BBC Radio 2 which is the most listened to radio station in the U.K. for those of you who don't know. That basically means it'll be played A LOT for the next week at least. It'll probably be on the A playlist for a few weeks.

I think the melody is beautiful... I love the chorus. ........ in my world... everybody stays.........
The love grunts sound like LB and CM from Big Love... I love the throwback..
oh ah oh... the ah being christine...
It's very bouncy (Christine) ... I can hear Mick on drums because he does the shuffle...
Listening to the keys, I can hear Christine all over this. Sounds like her melody, too.

Lyrics:
Fare-farewell
Heart of gold
Maybe we're lost
Without the cost
With stories that we've told
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world
Fare-farewell liberty
Maybe we're lost
Without the cost
Of who we used to be
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world
(love-grunts...)
Lay-lay down
Fall about
Take your time
To cross the line
All without a doubt
In my world
Everybody stays
Nobody wishes for words they couldn't say
Bless my soul
Let the night unfurl
Dancing, spinning, dreaming
Singing in my world
I think you'll find in verse one it's "the cost OF who we used to be". But thanks so much for transcribing it for us.
I like the first verse - a clear reference to being dogged by the shadows of Rumours (I think) and the refrain is a perfect picture of dreaming of an ideal world either while sleeping or drifting off.
But I have to agree, the production sounds way too much like a Tango B-side. Musically speaking it's Lindsey-lite and I only the rest of the album has more wellie as we say in England.

Yeah I heard that Red Sun was the next single.. Or, I read that on here a bit back..
Actually, upon first listen, I also heard elements of "Trouble" and "Peacekeeper". "In My World" seems to be a hybrid of many Lindsey tracks and this may well have been intentional. It's difficult to tell whether Christine is providing backing vocals or not - initially I thought she was, now I'm not so sure. If she is, her vocals are definitely mixed way down, which seems rather odd given the duet concept. I do think this track could have been beefed up with a strong Stevie harmony vocal, but I still like it very much.

Argentina... I wonder when it will be released there. Check your itunes.
Disclaimer: this is not an attempt at Stevie bashing.
I understand Stevie's reasons for not participating in a Fleetwood Mac recording (albums don't sell/she can't work with Lindsey/she doesn't want to be in a studio for a year or more/she wanted a break/she had an album to belatedly tour after putting her plans on hold when Christine unexpectedly returned etc) and respect her right to do as she wishes. I may not agree with her reasoning but obviously it's her decision whether she records with the band or not and I don't believe she (or anyone) should be coerced into doing anything against their will.
That said, I am simply disappointed that Stevie hasn't embraced the opportunity to create with the Mac once more (possibly the last chance), particularly since Christine has returned. Hearing the first taste of the Lindsey/Christine (ie unofficial Fleetwood Mac) album has made me pine for what could have been. Without allocation of blame or ill-feeling, I just think it's a shame for the band and their fans.
I truly hope Stevie will reconsider her position and opt to record one final album with the Mac next year. Time is running out and who knows what the band members' individual circumstances may be a year or two from now. In any case, I wish them all well.

Ok, so i've had this track for 12 hour now, and I'm still as giddy as I was on the first play as I am on the 20th. The complaints I'm struggling to understand. The production is stunning, the space and lushness of the track is reminiscent of the best parts of Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey's vocal doesn't sound overly processed, which is a move in the right direction for him. Listen to TTWLG to understand what he sounds like when he shifts keys in post production. The oh's are a clever way of adding substance and variance to the track and the cowbell flourishes are very cool. :blob1::blob1:
Whilst i agree that Christine should be more present in the vocal mix but this isn't unusual for Fleetwood Mac to have only one members vocal on the track.
My god how great it it listening to Mick and John do their thing. ROCK. SOLID.
The poster who mentioned Empire of The Sun understands it, I think this is Fleetwood Mac really showing the millennials how it's done, Lindsey and Chris invented this sound.

Ultimately: I love it -- if it were for an upcoming Buckingham album I would be OVERJOYED with the production .. it's like a combination of Stand Back and Love Minus Zero and SWS

Just listened to In My World...
It's a pretty harmless slice of pop music. It's quite nice and I can see why people have said it could have been on Tango In The Night (perhaps this particular song has been released as a nod to the TITN 30 year anniversary). Overall I'm feeling slightly underwhelmed though. I'll echo the disappointment about the lack of Christine on the song (I thought this was supposed to be a duets project- what sort of message does it send releasing a single with half of the act completely absent?). I was also hoping for something a bit meatier and rock-orientated. The repeated jangly guitar motif is a bit irritating. I'd at least like to have heard a rock guitar solo in the outro, perhaps. The Big Love-type oohs sound a bit odd... on Tango In The Night most listeners at the time assumed they were Stevie- it makes it a bit weird on a Stevie-less song. The best part is the instrumental interlude from 2.14-2.30 (nice drum fills Mick). Overall I'd say this sounds like a good album track rather than a hit single (yes, it does remind me of You and I part 2). I don't think its going to set the world on fire but it's nice enough.

Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie – “In My World”

Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie -
Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are releasing a collaborative full-length together. Recorded at LA’s Village Studios with fellow Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the 10-track duets album Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie will be out in June, and the duo will head out on a brief tour of the US shortly thereafter. First single “In My World” has just arrived, and you can hear it below.

Funny somebody mentioned a Straight Back vibe, don't get that AT ALL. I think before the release on June 9th a Chris song will be available! YAY! while i'm extremely happy they are releasing this album, i reserve the right to not like everything they release, and to express it too . and i'm also still unhappy that this was not released back in 2014. we could have had 2 albums from them by now if they haven't waited for the person this song is pointed at. and from what we hear now when they got over the wait, they both are planning on releasing more albums, some possibly even this year. so yeah, very excited about actually hearing and getting all this new music, finally!
Is it now fair to say there isn't an accompanying music video with this single? If so, they'd be unlikely to release one with any future singles. That's a real shame- I'd at least like to have had some artistic footage of them in the studio or something.
good point. Lindsey had that for SWS songs, on his website, and it was cool. would be really nice to have some footage of them in the studio! who knows, maybe closer to the album release date?

Listening to it right now for the first time, earl in the morning.
Very very very recognizable as a solo Lindsey-song. A bit of the Big Love voice-samples in the middle. This song could have perfectly fit on Out of the Cradle. No sign of Christine though ...

I find the oh ah oh in the middle annoying. I don't like when Stevie cannibalizes herself and I don't like when LB does either. Nothing really new. Really, really, really, hoping the rest is much better. Everyone knows Chris is the best single writer of them all.
Just heard it. Its definitely catchy, bouncy and I can hear Christine in the keys... but what this song really needs is lush layered harmonies from them both. (Especially Christine.) I find myself singing trying to sing along in the harmony...
Very organic sound, which I like. Not bad... but I want Christine harmonies...
I'm just wondering if I've been way too spoiled by Tango and the lush Christine harmonics there?
Bring on the other songs please! ;)

Was prepared not to like it from some of the posts on here but I do.It's melodic and atmospheric with good lyrics.I do agree with those that feel that Chris should be on it kind of odd that she wouldn't be. I hope that is not a harbinger for other Lindsey songs on the album.

I will reserve my judgement until the album comes out and I've had an opportunity to listen to ALL the songs. I'm especially excited about new material from Christine and agree it's a shame she's not utilized more on this first single, which is underwhelming to me, personally.
Not sure why they thought it would be a good choice of "lead" single. I just don't hear anything special here. There's no hook. The lyrics are lackluster.
But again, that's merely my opinion. As a song, it doesn't speak to me or get me excited. Seems like "filler". Here's hoping the rest of the album (especially Christine's material) blows this song out of the water.

I wish it had more/any Christine, but she wasn't especially present on "Big Love" (to which this song pays homage), and TITN had a lot of LB/CM collaboration, so I'm not reading anything into it.
However, it IS an odd choice for a lead-off single.

I downloaded it and listened the whole way through. It's quite catchy. Good song. Very good, in fact. That said...
I'm not nuts about his processed vocals. And I'm REALLY annoyed that Christine is not singing prominently on it. She would have sounded terrific harmonizing on the chorus. Why oh why was she not singing here? My assumption is that it was largely recorded prior to her rejoining. Okay. But then GO BACK IN and sing background! As a teaser for the album, they could have picked something they were both singing on.

sounds like a leftover that didn't get used on any one of his recent solo albums. I don't think it's an 'homage' to any FM album -- Tango or Mirage-- it sounds like something he's written within the last decade that didn't make the cut on a solo album. And I agree with whoever said they don't hear Chris on keyboards at all.

I agree with everyone here that it's an odd choice of lead single. I was expecting a Hold Me/Don't Stop style split vocal track.
But I'm really happy with the song. I'm especially glad about the production. Lindsey's solo stuff has been getting thinner and thinner in a way that I don't think would translate to Fleetwood Mac, though it works well for solo stuff. SWS was particularly anaemic on the bass and really hyped in the high frequencies. Either Lindsey changed approach here or the fact that he didn't mix it himself has been a big factor.

What the hell is that drivel? This is the worst Lindsey single ever. And that is saying something with Peacekeeper and Family Man in his stable. I just listened to it. It really wasn't what I expected. I too wish Christine was more present on this track. It's just makes sense to me to have the first single be a duet. I'm really curious now to what the rest of the album is like. I'm not really into Lindsey's solo stuff since I've only ever listened to Law and Order, but this first song really seems more like what I imagine his solo style is. I guess what I'm trying to say is it is very Lindsey Buckingham. I will say the chorus is pretty catchy. However, I'm enjoying the instrumentation much more than the vocals. The rhythm section is really good and very reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either.

I've just worked out the chords (see another thread) and I think there are a lot of variants Lindsey doesn't use a lot. Maybe ever. It's ok, definitely not bad - I need to hear it within the context of the album, so I'm trying to hold back from judging it too much.
I was hoping for more Christine, but as someone else said in this thread, it's not unusual for Fleetwood mac songs to be dominated by only one of the songwriters.
To my ears, it sounds as though it would fit perfectly on SYW with Stevie vocals - I'm just so aware of the space where Stevie's voice would be :(
It's sad she's not on this album (As Lindsey's face perfectly demonstrates on the cover), but it wasn't to be. Good on them for releasing this music and I'm looking forward to hearing the album as a whole.

Interesting. Think About Me is probably the only "commercial" song on Tusk. Its perfectly radio friendly. Usually strong album sales help singles. But Tusk ran out of gas and unfortunately Think About Me was the sacrifice.
If you pretend you never heard any song from Tusk and picture yourself listening to Tusk for the first time in 1979. Its a no brainer Think About me would be your lead off. But Lindsey wanted to show the world "Tusk". The limelight of Rumours put the single Tusk in the top 10. You NEVER hear it on the radio today. Imagine if the singles were reversed and Tusk was the 3rd single. It would not have even cracked to top 50.

So the song finally popped up on Spotify for me to listen to obsessively on the way to work this morning. A few observations:
1) After listening to an HD version of the song in my car a few times, everyone is right: absolutely no Christine backing vocals on this one. I'm okay with that- not every Fleetwood Mac song featured other members backing vocals.
2) I'm in love with this fresh, crisp, yet classically spooky FM sound. I really didn't know what to expect sonically from this project or what I even hoped to hear, but this managed to satisfy my desires all the same.
3) The guitar solo at the end is kinda lame. I suspect it was recorded as a throwaway item with radio in mind. Radio stations invariably cut off end of song solos, no matter how epic they are.
4) My car apparently thinks this is a Lindsey solo song. Typically my car pulls an album cover and song information when I'm listening to HD radio, satellite radio, or streaming through Spotify like I was in this instance. Not only did my car get the artist wrong, it also pulled this random picture of Lindsey up instead of the album cover. Bizarre.

There is some truth to this .Look at Tango it appeared to be running out of steam after Seven Wonders barely made the U.S. top 20 and did far worse in the U.K. ..then Little Lies hit the pop top 5 in both places followed by Everywhere.I also think Tusk is a great and interesting song and it still played on some of the SF stations.

Here is my review of it:
This is a hugely disappointing single.
It's bland and has no hooks or catchy beat. The lyrics are impossible to relate to and even nastier to sing along to.
The arrangement of the song has forgotten about any form of intro, bridge or solo or outro. All we are given is a verse veres chorus verse chorus fade.
And as duet album I would have at least expected home harmonies from Christine or a keyboard and I hear neither.
Lindsey, our "worlds number 2 greatest underrated guitarist" had only two strings on his guitar. My 5yr old daughter could learn it in less than 10 minutes.
I find it hard to say where the talent lies with this song.
It's one of the very very few Lindsey songs that falls into this category . But it is right up there with flying down juniper and most of the law and order efforts.
Stevie dodged a bullet with this one.

I initially felt quite underwhelmed and disappointed by this single. I really do find it quite bizarre Christine is seemingly completely absent.
That said, I've found myself singing this song in my head for about 6 hours straight. I have to take issue with the people that say there aren't any hooks... I'd say this song is very hooky. I had hoped for something more along the lines of Sad Angel but its still a decent song.

After sleeping on it and a couple more listens this morning, I've gotten over the fact "In My World" is not what I hoped for, accepted it for what it is and can appreciate it on that level a little more. I don't think the song is so much directed at Stevie. They have sung at and about each other before, this is something different. This is Lindsey getting inside her head concerning her ambivalence toward Fleetwood Mac versus her solo career.
The verses represent FM - the solid foundation from Mick and John with Lindsey's irritating and dissonant guitar on top that does not change or resolve melodically. The chorus is obviously representative of her solo career - in my world everything is hunky dory - but Lindsey can't help but give his opinion by locking her thoughts in an echo chamber.
Lindsey believes friction is vital to FM's creativity and Stevie does not. The "love grunts" are actually giving voice to the push/pull tug of war between them.
I bet this is one of the songs that Lindsey wrote for Stevie to sing around the time of the EP. I could also see her - understandably - refusing to sing it and give him the perverse thrill of him hearing her sing what he thinks is going on in her head. It reinforces her resolve to not work creatively with Lindsey. His response is to release the song as a single, duet album be damned.
Or I could be reading way to much into it...

Here are my thoughts and feelings about it ...
Firstly, let's take care of the great big elephant in the room: Where is Christine?
Christine is nowhere to be found or heard on this first Buckingham/McVie single. Sort of like "Big Love" announced the big return of Fleetwood Mac only it featured exclusively Lindsey with Mick and John. A very, very bizarre choice for a first single.
All that being said: The song is SUBLIME! The chorus makes me cry as I can SO RELATE to the lyrics! I have a girl who's been singing backups for me since 2001 and lately, the magic is gone - we can barely look at each other and talk unless we've had wine and the singing together is NOT what it used to be and so when I heard him sing those words - I got SO emotional.
I absolutely adore the instrumental bridge - at some point, his humming and guitar effects combined sound like some brass patches (like a more subtle Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind).
He's talking about "take your time" - oh, that precious time! One of Lindsey's lyrical obsessions.
I adore the guitar solo - it's very similar to what he ends up doing on "End of Time" - just plaintive, repetitive and emotionally charged despite its simplicity and sparseness.
I have listened to it, I kid you not, about 100 times already. I not only stayed up past 2AM listening to it on repeat, I kept in on repeat throughout my sleep ... it is in my blood and soul at this point and I absolutely ADORE it. My tough music critic side would give it a 4 out 5 (which is EXCELLENT) but my Buckingham lover side gives it a firm 5 out of 5. It is heaven.
... but where in the hell is Christine?

I think it's just ok. Surprised Christine wasn't on it at all, but then again, not surprised.
Maybe to them, a duet album means, you do a song, then I'll do a song, then you do a song, then I do a song.
The effects he put on his voice are annoying to me. He's going for a certain vocal sound, obviously. I think it's kinda cool that he added the "oh-ahs" to it as an homage of sorts. The guitar parts are underwhelming, especially for Lindsey.
As far as this song being pointed at Stevie...not so sure. In Lindsey's defense, I don't think every time he mentions lost loves in his songs it's about her.

Wow - I absolutely ADORE his 'This is 40' songs - especially 'Brother and Sister' and 'Sick of You'. I had no idea some people were less than absolutely CRAZY about those songs. And what can be said about his gorgeous harmonies on 'Always Judging'? Wow.
Also DreamIsOver said: "...the solid foundation from Mick and John with Lindsey's irritating and dissonant guitar on top that does not change or resolve melodically". You're right, the riff doesn't really change or resolve musically but "irritating" and "dissonant"? How? They are in key, beautifully subtle and the fact that they don't resolve adds to the absolute poignancy of it.
Man ... am I the only one that is absolutely IN LOVE with this song?
And Mick's unmistakable drum fills which recall Ringo ... love them!

Let's remember that "Do You Miss Me" was probably the lamest song on GOS and it was chosen as the single. Even Lindsey made comments on tour about being slightly stumped by the decision for that song to be a single.
I doubt this is officially the single, more like a teaser until the real promotion kicks in. I like it, anyone can spot that rhythm section a mile away. Classic drum fills.

Let's remember that "Do You Miss Me" was probably the lamest song on GOS and it was chosen as the single. Even Lindsey made comments on tour about being slightly stumped by the decision for that song to be a single.
Exactly, agree with every word.

Hearing the preview now. It's a mix of Trouble and Peacekeeper if you ask me. Though I hated Peacekeeper.
I don't hear "Trouble" in this new song but I def. hear "Peacekeeper."
I loved "Peacekeeper." But I hate this new song.
i liked Peacekeeper from SYW, and i thought i liked Stevie-Lindsey harmonies on it. but then i heard original Peacekeeper, not slowed down SYW version, and without added Stevie vocals. the original one was heaps and bounds better song.
I often prefer the demos to the released versions.
Actually, upon first listen, I also heard elements of "Trouble" and "Peacekeeper"
Ah, you've got something in common with secondhandchain.
Firstly, let's take care of the great big elephant in the room: Where is Christine? Christine is nowhere to be found or heard on this first Buckingham/McVie single.
I have only heard the snippet given to us on Spotify and Rolling Stone. I played it 4 times. From the get go I instantly Loved it. On the 2nd listen I thought this song sounds like it could have been on the Tango album. Then I was preparing my morning coffee while the tune swirled around in my brain and I said to myself, "where have I heard this song before?" About 10 minutes later and during my first cup of coffee it hit me. PEACEKEEPER!!!
I total agree with everyone when we wonder why Christine is not on this song. It just makes no sense whatsoever to be a duet act and have only one singer. And even though I said I loved this track, I don't like that it is not some new unheard of mind blowing song, like it should be for a classic rock artist who has had YEARS to perfect this music. So I must separate this knowledge and just let this song stand alone for what it is and on first listen was enjoyable to my ears. I have heard many Mac songs over the years that I didn't like on first listen that took repeated listens for me to like. And that is because I WANT to like every FM song I hear.
Just heard the whole single courtesy of YouTube.....
I like it and it does remind me of Peacekeeper....which is a favourite of mine.

I had Time Bomb Town going in my head all morning. I don't know if this is a good or bad sign.

Sorry, but I gotta say it.....this song would sound way, way better with some Stevie background vocals!

I think it's a great song.
It wouldn't have been out of place on Under The Skin,
Gift of Screws or Seeds We Sow.
Or the Fleetwood Mac EP. (Production-wise - a huge improvement from Say You Will)
For me the John McVie bass is the best part of the song.
Nothing groundbreaking, but it's a solid Lindsey track and
bodes well for the rest of the album.
I can't think of a single artist or band from their era
who are still making interesting "current" sounding music.

I think the best would have been a 3 part harmony.

I love Lindsey -- but there's been soemthing thin and processed about much of his work since the 2000s. Songs like "What's the World coming to" and even what he did to "Goodbye baby" have this artificial computer percussion going on in them that just zaps them of anything organic. What he was doing on Tusk, Mirage and his first 3 solo CDs was great. they all sound so lush, weird (in a good way), and human. "Say You Will" was really 9 Linds songs and 9 Linds-prodcued Stevie songs. It felt like a solo LB ablum with 9 SN songs added in. The vocals mostly felt overdubbed and disconnected. I can perhaps understand why Stevie didnt want to join in on this venture. But I am still hoping this new album is NOT like "Say you will" and i actaully feel like Chris and Linds are in the same room working and playing together — as opposed to 5 Linds songs and 5 Chirs songs, processed and overly perfect.

I think that's the part I dislike the most. It does sound very current. Maybe I'm in the minority but I love when a song sounds "dated". That's why I primarily listen to classic rock. I can appreciate Lindsey going for an updated sound, it's just not really my cup of tea.

On Spotify it's down as Lindsey Buckingham. Apart from it showing the album cover with Christine there's no mention of her. Weird.

I agree with you, but even on SYW there were prominent background vocals. This song just seems like solo Lindsey to me.

I see Welcomechris/Joe Seerj has put In My World on his 'official' Fleetwood Mac Youtube channel. Be aware that isn't an 'official' FM Youtube channel.

Thank you for the heads up.
Now that I have heard the whole song my opinion is wayyy different than just hearing a snippet.
This song lacks more than it gains.
The whole world essentially is waiting for a new Christine McVie song and to lead out with a LB song was a big mistake. But I can understand why it was done. This project was LB's baby from the get go. But this song is too repetitive to come in at 4:24. This ditty would have been more perfect if it was cut down to the 3:00 minute marker. I can picture this song getting some airplay but I predict will be long gone from the airwaves in under a month.

After I bought it the initial listen I liked, but was not overly jazzed about. The second listen vastly improved my opinion for some reason. I do wish there was an identifiable guitar solo though. Did they really recycle Sleeping Around the Corner as the opening track on this album??? I like the song, but it's an interesting choice.

But it's now a duet project (or at least that's how they're talking about it in interviews...). Now I'm sort of worried that the other 4 LB songs are going to be like this one, that they will have little or no audible Christine involvement, and that the only collaborative stuff will be on Christine's songs. If "In My World" is the only song on the album that doesn't feature her, why choose it as the first song to be released, when they're playing up the idea that this is a duet album?
