We all know the audio and video footage of the "Red Rocks" video was cleaned up and changed before released. Here's "Talk to me" in it's original form https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5q_ZUbjkx8
"Stand Back" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDZNrSr0sRg
"Outside the rain." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpcHsJ4TwTI
"Dreams." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKdBgtN2cfY
You can hear the original audio is VERY different from what we have been hearing the past 30 or so years when watching "Live at Red Rocks."
Much of the vocals were obviously redone.
Please post your thoughts after listening to these.
I have read so much about this over the years but only found and listened to the REAL audio tonight.
Some of "Outside the rain" and "Dreams" sounds like the audio on the released video. "Stand Back" is dramatically different, although the ending sounds the same.

I know the vocals were redone because of the drugs, but I really don't like how they changed the pitch of Stevie's voice on the video. Her voice was deeper during the Rock a Little tour. So I actually kinda like these raw versions, especially Talk to Me.

Didn't she play Red Rocks twice during this tour? The poster says its from 1987 so there is definitely some confusion. I don't think Stevie sounds that great on the Red Rocks video. I hate the video because its so staged and fake....anything but a live performance. I would not be surprised these are the tapes from that concert but I am not convinced either.

When Showtime originally aired the concert, it was 1987.

Also, you can hear some of these vocals match the video. Very few, but a few lines of the vocals weren't dubbed

She performed three times at Red Rocks during the RAL Tour, the first two were the 25th and the 26th of June 1986, while the third was the 20th of August 1986 and "Stevie Nicks Live At Red Rocks” was filmed this last one time, however new close ups for the home video has been filmed in February 1987 before the actual release.

Yes
Could it be possible this audio is from one of the other Red Rocks RAL tour stops?
The RAL tour was a mixed bag. Some nights good and other nights not good. I did not listen to all of these but from the small parts I heard she sounds better than many other RAL tour stops that I have heard.
The RAL Chicago Rhiannon is so sad and the New York Stand Back sad too :( IMHO. I suppose I need to listen again because I did not think they were that bad.

It actually exists somewhere a bootleg of one of those June dates but I don't think this is it because from what I know that audio hasn't been circulating and these posts have been uploaded on youtube 5 years ago, while it also does exists and was circulating at some point an "unedited/uncut" version of the Red Rocks video concert.
Also as the original poster says and someone here noticed, the first two songs seem to have more of the lines that ended up on the finished product.

So many pet peeves about Red Rocks.
The annoying floating camera and the endless close face shots with Stevie posing to the camera
The annoying different hair style for the "real" concert and the "touched" close parts
The song selections could have been better.
The totally wasted look of Mick and Peter as they step out of the limo with Stevie (oops we did not know we were going to be on camera)
Although she had one of her best edge walks ever that night and her exorcism style yell during Edge
Stand Back is cool with her "its NOT alright" and her feline cat scratch "Stand Back!" at the end.
Her annoying drunk. sounding "standing in it well you will be standing in it" at the end sounds like she did not know the music ended HAHA
Macfan4life

Yes after listening more to Stand Back there are parts that are identical.
The "Its not alright" part and the ending
I think she sounds fine on these recordings
How crazy to think. OMG we just filmed a concert. No one can see you this way. No one can hear you like this.
Just crazy

I agree. They could have used the original vocals. Or at least used most of them. I went to 3 "Rock a Little" concerts in southern California, and she was amazing all 3 nights.
It's just strange now, as I have enjoyed the "Live at Red Rocks" video for close to 31 years, and really had no clue the audio wasn't from the original show. I knew the fake shots were there, but not the audio. I recorded the concert on my Beta Hi-Fi VCR when Showtime originally aired it. Then I purchased it when it was released officially on Beta(I was a die-hard Beta fan because of the superior picture and stereo quality and didn't get a VHS machine until they stopped releasing Beta movies in 1990). Then I bought a VHS copy of the concert. And then I purchased a DVD copy. LOL! I probably watched this concert 200 times over the years. But I never knew the audio was totally dubbed until a couple of years ago when I read about it online. So, it's fascinating to me that this concert I've watched for decades is fake!
And I expected the real audio to be way worse than it actually is after reading how butchered she sounded, according to various sources online.
It's not as bad as I expected it to be.
It's really interesting to read everybody's reactions on this thread.

coz she didn't just dub a few bad notes.....it was a LOT.
And the video is very fake....far, far too many studio shots done later because she was such a wasted mess during the taping.
It ends up being like a promo video, not a concert. the shots of her throughout the whole thing are her lip synching to the audio track. there not much 'live' about it.

Because the "concert" is barely from the concert at all.
The fake close-ups, the dubbed audio.
This was a very famous concert.
It hit #1 on Billboard's video charts, first on the Beta/VHS release, and then again when it was released on DVD over a decade later.
Most fans own this concert and have watched it for decades.
It's become a "thing," as you put it, because it's become infamous for not being real at all.

That "well well" shriek at the 2:00 mark is also on the "Live at Red Rocks" video. That part was not dubbed and shows that this is the original audio as it is used in the video release. One of the few pieces of audio that wasn't dubbed.

That's a cool version of I Need To Know. You can hear her vocal so well.

Many of the fans state they were paid actors and paid to cheer and clap.

I was surprised to know that the Tango concert was also lip synced. You can notice the far away clips are a bit different than the close ups. But my biggest surprise that we discussed year about a year ago was the band lip synced to Don't Stop for the 1993 Bill Clinton inaugural. Christine mentioned this during an interview that I posted. I guess because it was live TV it was a safe thing to do?
SisterNightroad

Also their 1997-8 performance at the TV show Wetten Dass was lip synched, watch it if you can because it's priceless.
Often in Live TV shows bands have to lyp sync performances because they don't have the space and time to rehearse beforehand or the acoustic isn't appropriate or even in some cases the place isn't "equipped" for some of the instrumentation. For example in my national's third channel show "Che Tempo Che Fa" Madonna and Adele could actually perform because much of their music was handled electronically or they singed with very sparse and simple instrumentation or even acapella but Muse had lip synched.
However returning to the Red Rocks show, I know the unedited/uncut version crculating should be an audience recording and I think this is the case since at some point in the audio you can hear very clearly fans shouting and cheering.

That's interesting about FM lip synching at the Clinton inauguration, as Lindsey's vocals sounded very rough. You'd think they would have used a better vocal.

It's not uncommon for artists to do this especially in the 80's. There were times during that tour where she literally looked on the verge of death. I'm glad she wasn't immortalized that way.

Have you ever been to Red Rocks? Everybody who was there (and I know many) were well on their way to being as high as Stevie. If you could handle the day long wait in the hot sun then it was a great big fun party complete with water balloons or water of any kind to cool off and a smorgasbord of substances to keep you hydrated and engaged. Then they would open the gates and you would run up those crazy stairs to get yourself and your friends the best seats, close, close, close! No one was bored or dissatisfied by any stretch of the imagination. Also there is a soundboard of No Spoken Word from August and she sounds just fine. You can't really use a low quality audience recording for comparison.
I should also note the tickets to the August show were free!

the fact still remains, it's not an authentic concert video. if you're ok with that, that's great. I find it sad.

The Tango video wasn't lip synched, it was a pro-shot filmed tour stop, but parts of vocals were re-recorded in the studio after it was filmed and all of Stevie's close-up's were redone, Red Rocks style. The actual performance was live though.

Both The RAL and the Tango concert videos are pro-shot actual performances with vocals partially re-recorded in the studio and additional re-shot of close-ups, in fact they have the same director.

I would say that any concert video isn't 100% authentic. They always go back and fix things. The Dance was culled from two nights of performances and was also overdubbed. Live in Boston same thing. In fact didn't they go to Switzerland to dub that one? Stevie Live in Chicago same thing. Now the songs from the master reel in Australia at the end of the RAL tour, those songs seems to be untouched. She doesn't sound bad at all, ad libs a lot and definitely forgets the lyrics at times. It's also eerie the way she says that it's her last concert.

yes, they do. but not to the extent of the Red Rocks video. they essentially decided that basically none of the concert close up footage of her was usable because she was such a mess. And she rambles at times and messes up and is noticeably out of it for a lot of it.
This is not your standard concert with a little sweetening to make it perfect for posterity.
This is video/audio of a woman sadly and sometimes embarrassingly wasted onstage. The tweaks are blatantly obvious (whereas most times they are fairly discreet). It's just such a blatant papering over of a drug fueled cluster**** .
It's very, very sad. I find it mostly impossible to watch. If you were a fan of hers from the 70s and recall how youthful and vibrant and California hippie girl she was, seeing her so wasted is just sad.

I think you're exaggerating a bit. As I said both the Red Rocks video concert and the Tango one have received the exact same treatment and in the latter Stevie wasn't a mess at all. I think the main reason why these two video concerts are touched up so is because of the main director's personal taste. I don't remember where but I've read that these shows were filmed purposely to look like music videos and not real concerts in true 80s style.
If it were really only because she was too wasted then they would have just not published the video, just like they've done for the Wild Heart one, now that was truly a mess. In the past Stevie has been often "sadly and sometimes embarrassingly wasted onstage" way before RAL. More than once during the Rumours Tour she risked falling off stage because she was too inebriated.

No doubt IMHO 1983 was when drugs started to affect her performance and probably daily life. She toured with Joe Walsh who said not long ago they had to break up otherwise one of them was going to die of a drug overdose. Her life in 1983 was out of control. Getting married and the reasons for marrying Kim. Then going out on the road with Joe and her boyfriend. She was still the beauty queen rock star so she could get away with those kind of crazy performances. For RAL she gained weight and by this time it there were physical changes you could see. But yes, her Wild Heart performances were definitely impacted.

Stevie did look a little heavy to me on the RAL concert video, but she looked fantastic when Tango was released and in all three music videos. So it's interesting to hear people say she was overweight during the Tango tour, too. I think the only time Stevie looked really overweight was around Street Angel, and even then she carried it well. She's healthy now so that's what's important.

Ouch! Unfortunately this is probably true. Stevie says he was the love of her life, but I heard when he was on Howard Stern show, he said Stevie was just a "road f#©<" to him (!!!!) Joe Walsh seems like a TOTAL douche bag. Crass, rude and a pig. But back to the subject of Red Rocks, I find that it's an interesting subject. And NO, I do not think most video concerts are 90% re-recorded and re-shot in the studio. Do I think most ones are cleaned up a bit? Yes. But not to the extent of Red Rocks. I still hold a certain fondness for this release still. I like the original footage that remained on it. The Edge walk. The dove. The show holds tons of great memories hanging with friends, drinking Zima and blasting it from my hi-fi 120 watt speakers in my living room :-)

I think Stevie is at least somewhat aware of Joe's past comments, since he is the only ex-lover with whom she isn't very close friends with.
However as much as I don't sympathize with Joe Walsh I have to say that in more recent interviews after he's changed his life he's been talking in a much kinder and more honest way about Stevie:
BACHER: Stevie Nicks has described you as the "great, great love of [her] life." What do you think of that statement?
WALSH: [laughs] I'm very humbled by it. She's a great songwriter, a great singer and a great person. We spent about a year together, and she helped me write a bunch of music, and I helped her write her music. We had a great relationship. Romantically, it shifted, but in terms of friends and respect for each other, that's all still there. She's really a great person. Anybody who knows her will tell you that. And she's a national treasure. Anything she sings, you immediately know it's her. If it's on the radio, you don't change stations, you listen to it.

Drugs fuel bad relationships. Stevie commented how drugs led to her and Mick hooking up for their brief relationship. She said that her and Mick were the big partiers and would be the last ones up when everyone else went home to the bed. So being the only 2 around drunk and high they just carried the party on themselves.

tbh i think they broke up because he was mostly over it more than anything else. every single time i've ever heard/read him talk about their relationship he was just really seems like he wasn't all that into it/her. he said he loved her like a sister and i cringed lol. ~cocaine~
In Joe's defense, he was married and clearly didn't want to answer that question on Howard Stern and was very uncomfortable having to do so. I think he was being as diplomatic as he could and saying that's how he felt about her currently. Imagine being married and deeply committed to someone and someone else you were with many years ago is telling the world that you're the love of their life. What do you say to that when you're put on the spot by Howard Stern? Other comments he's made have shown his deep respect and admiration for her. It's not always easy to talk about an ex and Joe's not necessarily one who wears his heart on his sleeve.

saying he loved someone in the past would in no way reflect on his current love for his wife.....
He has said in the past that while they were together on the road for WH they both were monogamous and clearly he felt that it was a relationship cocooned in that tour. Once the tour ended he went back to his life off the road. But Stevie was gaga about him and wanted to continue it as a deep romance. He clearly wasn't above hooking up with her off and on after that but in between hook ups he wasn't thinking about her and pining for her-- like she was for him. And she herself has said in more recent years that she became "needy" about it all..... clingy. And that made it worse and to me anyway it sounds like he did that thing of thinking "this chick just doesn't get it. Maybe if I treat her even sh&ttier she'll finally just let it go". Coz he really did treat her crappy IMO. And she kept taking it and thinking she could make it better. Maybe drugs made him be even more of a jerk about it, but it seems like a clear case of "he's just not that into you anymore" and she was all in a romantic haze about it. And maybe drugs made her unable to see it for what it was.
She said in a recent quote that she's been with plenty of nice guys who were happy for her success and not bothered by it and not bothered by the fact that she had to go away on tour and all that but she was always more interested in the big, drama relationships. So Joe fit that bill.

Where can I listen to the Aussie RAL master reel?
I would try YouTube. Also there's a bootleg called Unauthorized that's supposed to be from Australia. And there's Cloaks and Daggers. That one shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm still not going to judge him for that answer when he clearly didn't want to be answering it in the first place. His discomfort is obvious, at least I thought when I watched it.
Do you have sources for all of the info above? I'd like to read them because I've never heard any of that before. I'm much more interested in Stevie and Joe's relationship than I am with her relationships with Mick or Lindsey after all these years.

True but a wise man knows that it's not wise to wax poetic about an old girlfriend on the radio when married. It's disrespectful.

I don't think Joe Walsh is so naive that he doesn't expect these kind of questions by Howard Stern. Apart from the fact that Stern's inopportune questions are very well-known, he and Joe are long time acquaintances, if not friends, since Joe's been his guest numerous times during his career and they've always had a lot of fun talking about personal inappropriate things together on his show, and as we know there were many times in which Joe has eagerly answered very indiscreet questions about his relationship with Stevie.

She's healthy now so that's what's important.
if you compare her RAL self to WH, she definitely had put on some weight but yeah, on Tango she looked great. I think she looked really bloated and heavy on BTM! Also on SA but at least she was sober then so she looked a lot healthier and performed way better.

Here's where she said she was needy, an article in the UK version of Elle magazine in 2013. Someone linked to it here: http://www.fleetwoodmacnews.com/2013/09/stevie-nicks-original-rebel-my-whole.html#more
She and Walsh were together from 1983-1986. They did not write songs together – they took drugs. ‘I don’t know what my relationship with Joe would have been like sober. I remember days of misery waiting by the phone; me in my house, with him saying, “I’m going to visit you.” I would kick everyone out because I just wanted to be with him, and not a phone call, nothing.’ Why did she put up with it – she was one of the biggest female stars in the world? ‘Because I was in love with him,’ she says in an isn't that-obvious tone. ‘I wouldn't now. But we were doing a lot of drugs and drugs make you needy.’ She pauses. ‘And who wants needy?’
He talked about them being monogamous for the time of the tour but then it was over after that on Howard Stern. You can google the interview people have posted about it in lots of places....edited to add: there's a whole thread where people (some who are on here) talk about the whole Stevie/Joe relationship. Someone has a transcript of his Stern interview on there http://eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-209.html

For those who haven't seen it before, Stevie talking about Joe being the inspiration for Love is Like A River. sodascouts posted it from Ivory Keys on the Eagles thread linked in my previous post:
A few days ago, a 1994 interview with Stevie Nicks was posted on Ivory Keys (http://stevienicksivorykeys.blogspot.com/2013/08/stevie-nicks-up-close-07271994-radio.html). About 5 minutes in on the first track (http://www.mediafire.com/download/vkt6xdx4yd1chic/Up_Close_1994_Track_01.mp3), she says that Joe inspired the song "Love is Like a River (http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/sn/streetangel/loveislikeariver.html)" - she says about it:
"Well, that song is about one of the stranger male rock stars in the world today. And even though he's just a pain in my neck for years, when I think about him, I have to laugh. And when I think about him, I have to almost laugh so hard, I'm almost gonna cry, because the good things about our relationship always remain to me. And there were so many bad things about it... and I was so miserable and so upset and so heartbroken.
But at the same time, when I think about it, I think about, "Well, yeah, he used to call me wicked. I used to call him friend. He said that MY life was hard to deal with... 'Compared to what? YOUR lifestyle? YOUR LIFESTYLE? You're telling me MY lifestyle is completely crazy and screwed up? What about YOU?'"
But see, there's a double standard in rock'n'roll. It's not OK for me; it's perfectly perfect for all of them.
And so that's, you know, when I write my songs, I try to have... to end up with hope. Because if I can't end up with hope, then they'll kill me. Then I'm gonna go down in the onslaught, you know. So I try to at least reflect on that fact that yes, when I look back on his and my relationship, I do have to smile to myself, and go, "God, you know, there was some... such cool moments between him and me... that I'll never ever do that again. That will never be repeated. That was a first."
