So they decided to do a duet album instead of a Fleetwood Mac album? I don't find it a bad idea, sounds like a good and fun experiment.

I hope this is true! When you think about it, Mac just really wanted Lindsey in the beginning, which would have kept them as a 4 piece as they were with Bob Welch. I've always loved the way Chris and Linds worked together, I can totally see a joint project being super. Chris has total confidence in the material, and I believe her.

I think they could do it for the art, not for the sales.

I love the idea but I firmly believe if you are a REAL member of this band you don't sign up for big bucks for a tour but also be a part of the creative process of the band for new material. I know Stevie signed up for the tour but I feel that if she does not contribute to the new album than she should not be allowed to tour. The band (mostly Lindsey) turned down Christine with this same offer. It was reported during the 2013 European tour that Christine floated the idea of joining the band for the tour only. Lindsey pretty much said you are IN OR OUT. You cant have it both ways and come and go as you please (i.e. touring in Europe but not the USA). I think everyone should be treated the same. We all know that Stevie is a huge draw and it will never happen but its just my opinion ;)

They could call it Fleetwood Mac - Buckingham McVie .....it would be hilarious as it's their 4 names, when you think about it...

While I'm heartbroken that Fleetwood Mac has been confirmed dead, there is something totally heartwarming and sweet about Lindsey and Chris deciding to do a duet album. Especially at this point in their careers- they could just be resting on their laurels or doing their own solo projects, but no- they're working together. It kind of proves the real love and respect the two have for one another and their respective crafts. I'd completely lose my mind if they did a small tour together. After all these years of Fleetwood Mac disappointments, I'm still concerned this album won't make it to full term... but this article does give me some renewed hope. We're all rooting for you Lindsey & Chris!

Actually since this is being called "Buckingham-McVie" and it's written that there have been only "collaborations" with other FM members I think this is sort of a side project by Lindsey and Christine more than anything else.

Yesssssss.
Really pleased it's confirmed. I'm a bit frustrated it wont be released under the Fleetwood Mac name though. Perhaps even if the album is titled Buckingham McVie it should still be released by Fleetwood Mac.
Thank god we can finally put all these 'will she? won't she?' discussions to bed.

This is great! Any new music from Mac members is good news, and seeing as this will probably include Mick and John anyway, it's the best we could hope for.

I don't see it doing too well in the charts without Stevie. But I'm glad they're doing it without her.

And the picture of them is cute at the end :D

Yes!!! I love the combo of Buckingham/McVie!! They have always had amazing chemistry... I'm so proud that they realize that they are artists, too!

It's important.

I love how they both said, "F3939 this shi##($(!!! " Let's make new music for us and our fans. Not some diva wanna be cash grabbing .."whaaaa I don't want to sit around and make new music because it doesn't sell... because I can't work with Lindsey.... "

She had a million excuses...

Good job Christine and Lindsey... you don't need any more sales or money... you need to create.. because.. uhhhhhhhhhh you're artists.. So happy!!!

My disappointment is directed exactly where it should be. At the person that brought up record sales being an excuse not to record.

You do have a point, but even Shakespeare said, "What's in a name"..

I'm going to focus on the positive and celebrate the rebuilding of burned bridges. :)

The most interesting thing for me is that Christine added lyrics to instrumentals Lindsey did with Mick and John. I didn't know that. I was worried half of the material would be Buckingham and the other half Buckingham-McVie which would have resulted in a lop-sided album. If, however, she's given lyrics to his music and he's added music to her lyrics then it really is a proper, full-on collaboration.
Hmmm, I wonder if they'll be naked on the album cover :distress:

I'm happy to be getting another album. However, I detest how cutesy they're being calling it a duet album.

It's not.

Mick and John are on it, too.

It's as much a duet album as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Mr. Wonderful, Then Play On, Kiln House, Mystery to Me, Heroes Are Hard to Find, Say You Will, or Extended Play were.

Just tell us that, due to contractual obligations, you can't call it a Fleetwood Mac album.

That they're not calling it Fleetwood Mac tells me that Stevie is still in the band, otherwise they would simply call it Fleetwood Mac.

I think they are contractually obligated to have Stevie in the band for the big world tour, and are not crediting the album and small tour as Fleetwood Mac as a way to avoid confusion and to not alienate Stevie.

How is it an experiment?

"Working with them are two familiar names: Mick Fleetwood, whose towering drum kit is in the next room, and bassist John McVie."

How is this any different from Heroes Are Hard To Find or Say You Will? If anything, this is what Mick though he would be getting on New Year's Eve, 1974.

The experiment is that both Fleetwood and Mac are present, yet it's not called Fleetwood Mac. Although it's certainly possible, I don't necessarily see the name Fleetwood Mac being omitted due to a committee of managers and lawyers. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the natural consensus of the musicians involved. John especially is a pretty pragmatic guy. Plus, if there is to be a tour behind this album, are Mick and John guaranteed to be involved? I am also curious, will every bass or percussion note on the album be played by John and Mick? I have my doubts. With a name like Buckingham McVie, these seem like legitimate questions.

You know this is just driving Stevie crazy. For her to know Lindsey is enjoying making new music with Christine is driving her up a wall.
I wonder what she will do when they play the songs live (if they do).
I see this only escalating the drama in the band with Stevie and Lindsey which is unfortunate.

I think it'd be as good as certain Mick would be on the/a tour. John not so certain but still pretty likely. If, as the article suggests Mick and John were involved in the studio with Chris and Lindsey as recently as December I'd guess they are raring to go. If they are all signed on for a world tour with Stevie later in the year, why wouldn't they also do a Buckingham-McVie tour if they were on the album? They've had an input in this music for several years- they are also emotionally involved in the music.

What the what?! For months I check the news everyday for new information. Today I skip and THIS emerges!!!!

Buckingham/McVie. AWESOME.

Am I upset or bothered that this project is not being called Fleetwood Mac? Not in the least. Make no mistake: regardless of it's title, this is a Fleetwood Mac album. The only thing stopping it from being called such is the contract they signed for the ensuing world tour. They don't want to muddy the waters with a 4/5 FM project and then go out as a 5-piece.

Who cares? We're getting that music. I couldn't be more effing thrilled!!!!!

Don't kid yourself, there were lots of discussions on how to release the album, because they recorded it with every intention of it being released as Fleetwood Mac. Even though they only casually mention the involvement of Mick and John deep into the story, they DID go out of their way to mention THEM and not others. If there were others involved, and they're trying to contrast this with Fleetwood Mac, wouldn't that have been the best time to do that?

I think they held out hope that Stevie might come around the closer they got to finishing the album. After it was clear that wasn't the case, they went with the option that keeps Stevie in Fleetwood Mac and are now going out of their way to call it a duet album so as not to alienate her.

FuzzyPlum

I think this will mean the supposed late 2017 World tour will be pushed back to 2018 after all.
If the album is released in May then they'll likely tour on the back of it. Not sure they'd tour and then move onto another World tour with Stevie straight away... their voices can no longer handle it.

Do we know what the arrangements have been in the past? I thought Stevie got a bigger cut than Lindsey for the Say You Will tour. If the four tour this album would it be 35%, 35%, 15%, 15% ??? I wouldn't have a clue about the album sales cuts but I don't think Mick and John have received much from albums historically. Can't see it being different to the previous FM arrangements.

Why would they feel the need to not call this a Fleetwood Mac album to not alienate Stevie when she's said that she's not interested in an album right now?
When in fact the band is named after Mick and John who'd been in the band long before any of the others and they never had any qualms to call their output "Fleetwood Mac" when nor Stevie, nor Lindsey, nor even Christine were contributing?
As I see it this is probably being called for all intents and purposes a duet album by Lindsey and Christine because they want to hold the reins on the project, otherwise they would have to involve the others in all the decisions.

Why wouldn't they want to involve the others in all the decisions? They're a band. Surely the same could have been said of the songwriters on any other album. Lindsey and Stevie could have called Say You Will Buckingham Nicks 2 but they didnt.

How is it not an experiment if it's never happened before?
It HAS been done before.

Then Play On didn't have any songs featuring Jeremy Spencer, who was one of the frontmen at the time.

Christine has fronted the band with only one other vocalist, Bob Welch.

Lindsey has fronted the band with only one other vocalist, Stevie Nicks. THAT was a weirder use of the Fleetwood Mac name since they had a prior band called Buckingham Nicks.

Lindsey and Christine co-fronted Fleetwood Mac together on five albums.

By not calling it Fleetwood Mac, it deflects attention away from Stevie. If they had called it Fleetwood Mac, Stevie would get a lot of questions about it.

The difference was the end wasn't in sight. This is probably the last big tour, and they want to keep the classic lineup in tact.

As I see it this is probably being called for all intents and purposes a duet album by Lindsey and Christine because they want to hold the reins on the project, otherwise they would have to involve the others in all the decisions.
Except that a lot of the songs Christine finished were started by Lindsey with Mick and John in 2012 with the intention of having Stevie finish them for what they had hoped would be a new Fleetwood Mac album. We got Extended Play instead.

When Christine came back, she did so to work with her musical family, not just Lindsey.

So, no, band politics is why this won't be called what it really is, Fleetwood Mac.

Why wouldn't they want to involve the others in all the decisions? They're a band. Surely the same could have been said of the songwriters on any other album. Lindsey and Stevie could have called Say You Will Buckingham Nicks 2 but they didnt.
I don't know, I'm not in their heads but it's possible not everyone of them wants to do the same thing now, it wouldn't be the first time. Maybe not everyone wants to do an album without Stevie? Maybe not everyone wants to tour this summer? Maybe not everyone wants to commit fully to the studio for the time being? Or maybe Lindsey and Christine wants to change a bit and they want the freedom to use different musicians for different tracks? Or maybe Lindsey and Christine just wants to experiment an album of which they really are the sole two creators? Maybe they want freedom from the bindings of record companies?

It HAS been done before.

Then Play On didn't have any songs featuring Jeremy Spencer, who was one of the frontmen at the time.

Christine has fronted the band with only one other vocalist, Bob Welch.

Lindsey has fronted the band with only one other vocalist, Stevie Nicks. THAT was a weirder use of the Fleetwood Mac name since they had a prior band called Buckingham Nicks.

Lindsey and Christine co-fronted Fleetwood Mac together on five albums.
And they were all unique experiments in their genre. People aren't interchangeable, different members=different dynamics=different music. Otherwise there wouldn't be any difference between the different eras of this band.

By not calling it Fleetwood Mac, it deflects attention away from Stevie. If they had called it Fleetwood Mac, Stevie would get a lot of questions about it.

I highly doubt Stevie won't get questions this way.
And the end of Fleetwood Mac was avoided by a breath in the 90's if it wasn't for the Clinton inauguration and The Dance, everyone thought the classic line-up and probably the band were to die at the time.
I just don't think at this point they really care so much about band politics.

I'm like 99.99% sure it's a case of them not wanting the weird publicity/awkwardness and angry Stevie and money questions of releasing a Fleetwood Mac album without her on it but they still want to get their work out so they're doing this instead.

whether it is intentional or not, Buckingham McVie as a title has such similarity to Buckingham Nicks....... I mean they could call it anything. Seems like there's some messaging there. Look who has a new partner.....AND they're writing together....

Oh it's TOTALLY intentional. I think they just wanted to parallel that title, not like rub it in her face or anything but I doubt she's amused. These people are too funny, the drama never ends.

Make no mistake...this is a Fleetwood Mac album. They've spent the last 3 years making it and have spent the whole time trying to convince Stevie to participate. The initial 7 songs were Mick John and Lindsey and it sounds as if the recent recording was MJL&C. If they'd been successful and encouraged Stevie to participate do you really think the album would have other musicians?

As somebody else has said it is probably more likely a contractual issue. They are signed up for a world tour as a 5 piece. If they release a Fleetwood Mac album now the'll have to tour it. Promoters probably wouldn't allow them to tour as a 4 piece band ahead of the full world tour.

They’re nearly done with the album they’re calling “Buckingham McVie.”

That is what the article says. They are calling the album “Buckingham McVie.” It says nothing about what they are calling the band. It seems at least possible that they will use the "Fleetwood Mac" name. The article doesn't say for sure they are not going to use it.

I also read that sentence as making it sound that the name is a working title. It's possible that the actual name will be different once the recording, mixing, and packaging are complete.

Anyway, WHO CARES???? I simply couldn't be more excited. The two songwriters in the band who still want to create new music are doing just that. Lindsey and Christine have always had a wonderful musical chemistry. Hooray!

I'm baffled by no Stevie, especially now that Chris is back in the fold. Truly baffled. The band has always been a bit dramatic, so this really should come as no huge surprise. And we've seen Stevie be distant from the band over the last year or so. But you know, I wish they'd just be a bit more stable and "boring." Be a band. Give the people what they want, or in my case need. Be the Rumours 5-some and put out a new album. But this honestly the next best thing. Maybe even a better thing. The vibe and energy on this album might be better than one with Stevie. It's weird... it's almost like when SYW came out and John was saying in the documentary there would be a pall over the whole thing (had Chris been there) because the band knew she didn't want to be there. I guess the same thing is happening with Stevie right now, and I never really expected this of her. But hey, bring on Buckingham McVie!

Not only did they NOT say they were working with different people, they went out of their way to mention that Mick and John were involved. In fact, they ONLY mentioned Mick and John. If they were trying to distinguish this from Fleetwood Mac, they did a lousy job.

And, Christine said in an earlier interview that the FOUR of them were planning a smaller summer tour.

And they were all unique experiments in their genre. People aren't interchangeable, different members=different dynamics=different music. Otherwise there wouldn't be any difference between the different eras of this band.
Okay? I'm not sure what your point is . . . I mean "people aren't interchangeable, different members=different dynamics=different music" didn't stop them from using the Fleetwood Mac name before, and these four people were 80% of a band over five studio albums, so there's nobody different in the mix. Calling this Fleetwood Mac wouldn't have been a stretch.

And the end of Fleetwood Mac was avoided by a breath in the 90's if it wasn't for the Clinton inauguration and The Dance, everyone thought the classic line-up and probably the band were to die at the time.
If the sales numbers of all the Fleetwood Mac-related output -band or solo- between 1992-97 were added together, I doubt it would hit 600,000 albums. Lindsey and Stevie tanked as solo artists after leaving the band and the band tanked without them. The only way they could have careers was reuniting.

I think the difference is now she really never got over her Say You Will grudge so she doesn't trust Lindsey in the studio anymore for a full album and now that she's older and doesn't think records sell anymore she doesn't have the will to put up with the power struggle and drama that comes with making an album for FM.
However, I truly believe that she was just expecting them to scrap the project and not release anything so I think the fact that they're doing this is something she's not happy about.
I know it was forever ago but I remember when she talked about how when Lindsey and Chris wrote World Turning how much it upset her. Of course a lot has changed since then but I still think she isn't going to be happy.

I wonder if they're calling it a duets album because literally every song is going to be a duet? I hope that's not the case, but it would be great to hear a lot of duets between Lindsey and Christine. Just not all of them!

I'm looking forward to the album, but I have to admit my expectations are low. I hated Temporary One and Sweet Girl, tolerated Bleed to Love Her and My Little Demon, and liked only a handful of songs on Say You Will, and most of the ones I liked were Stevie's. And I loved nearly all of Christine's songs she co-wrote with Eddy Quintela at that time (As Long As You Follow, Save Me, Little Lies, Love Shines, etc), but since they are divorced, I'm guessing he didn't contribute to her songs for this album. We'll all find out soon enough!

Realistically, all she had to do was contribute two acoustic songs. I bet they wouldn't have forced her to do background vocals. If she could have spared all of one day, it could have been a Fleetwood Mac album. She could even have blamed her lack of involvement on her busy schedule.

I had the opposite experience. I thought ITM was excellent, far superior to the 1984 record. As a whole it had catchy tunes, Steely Dan moments and bluesy overtones on a number of the songs. Her voice was in top form, too. The acoustic version of "Friend" (admittedly not on the album but on a limited iTunes offer) is incredible.

It's based on that album that I'm very excited about this new one.

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie Are Working on a Duet Album

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie have decided to make their first-ever duet project, having apparently tired of waiting for Stevie Nicks to join sessions for a new Fleetwood Mac album. Fellow bandmates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are also sitting in, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The upcoming studio effort is tentatively titled Buckingham McVie; it could be out as soon as May. “You know, a better thing’s never happened to me,” a clearly enthused McVie told the Times. “We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us.”

Initial writing sessions for a new Fleetwood Mac album began nearly three years ago, not long after McVie returned following a lengthy retirement. Back then, the band was hoping to release their first studio project with Buckingham, Nicks and McVie since 1987’s Tango in the Night sometime in the summer of 2015. But Nicks, who is about to resume an ongoing tour with the Pretenders, has remained occupied.

In the meantime, it seemed something clicked. “Because of Stevie’s absence, there’s been a very strong link musically between Lindsey and I, where we’ve actually been able to concentrate and co-write,” McVie told the Huffington Post back in 2014. She said even those early collaborations produced “some fantastic, quite profound, quite surprising emotions. … It knocked my socks off completely.”

They’re at work back inside Village Studios, site of the sessions for Fleetwood Mac’s 1979 double album Tusk. In fact, the band helped design the studio’s wood-paneled recording suite. “It feels like coming home,” McVie added.
The musical interplay between Buckingham and McVie played a signature role in songs like “Think About Me” from Tusk, as well as “Don’t Stop” from 1977’s Rumours and “Hold Me” from 1982’s Mirage. Over the years, they co-wrote “World Turning” from 1975’s Fleetwood Mac and a trio of songs from Tango in the Night.

I think they're not calling it Fleetwood Mac just to avoid any confusion to the casual fan or consumer. People's attention span sucks these days and they need to be spoon fed exactly what they are getting. Of course, this is just my theory.

casual fans would not be confused, they probably have no clue who's in Fleetwood Mac anyway, and they would not care what exactly they are getting - just as you said.

not calling this FM is a way to still keep Stevie in the band, instead of her quitting and then coming back all within a year.

After it was clear that wasn't the case, they went with the option that keeps Stevie in Fleetwood Mac and are now going out of their way to call it a duet album so as not to alienate her.

exactly.

Well, perhaps you should give it another go. I think its better than the '84 album, personally. Anyway, I was just thinking as you mentioned liking her material with Eddy Quintela. In The Meantime came after her split with Quintela and only one of the songs on that album involved him. Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham talk about making their first duet album

Although Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are also working on the album, it won’t be released as a Fleetwood Mac album. (Jan. 13, 2017)
Randall Roberts

Longtime devotees of the rock band Fleetwood Mac might be forgiven for letting out a gleeful yelp when registering the news that singer-keyboardist Christine McVie shared with The Times in December while sitting next to her band mate -- guitarist, singer and producer Lindsey Buckingham.

“I've been sending Lindsey demos in their very raw form,” she says, sitting in the Village Studio’s storied Studio D in West Los Angeles, “and he's been doing his Lindsey magic on them, which I love.”

The product of that magic is tentatively scheduled to come out in May, and the two are at the Village to work on vocals. Working with them are two familiar names: Mick Fleetwood, whose towering drum kit is in the next room, and bassist John McVie.

The album coming out of these sessions, however, won’t bear the Fleetwood Mac imprimatur.

Rather, the release with the working title “Buckingham McVie” will arrive as the first full-length collaboration between the pair.

For hard-core fans, it’s not news that, save band mate Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac’s members have been holed up at the Village. At various intervals over the past few years, the band has acknowledged working on an unspecified project thought to be a new Fleetwood Mac album.

In fact, during a studio visit in 2014, The Times’ Randy Lewis sat down with Christine McVie and Buckingham to discuss her return to touring after 16 years away from the band.

“I thought, I'm really missing out on something — something that's mine, that I’ve just given up,” she said to Lewis. “I'm not paying respect to my own gift."

Nearly three years later, sharing a couch in the same suite where decades earlier Fleetwood Mac recorded its epic album “Tusk,” Buckingham says that after her return, he and McVie generated an entire album’s worth of material during the sessions.

“We got in here, and it made sense to me with what she had given me and what I done with it. But we still didn't know how it was going to play out in the studio,” Buckingham says.

He quickly realized that he’d had a pent-up enthusiasm for this kind of collaboration. “I loved doing it, because it's something that I haven't had a chance to do for Stevie as much as I did in the past,” he says, stressing that he continues to compose for solo projects.

“Those are a little more esoteric and off to the side,” he says, “but that's not the same as doing it for somebody else.”

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie in 2014 at West L.A.'s Village Studios.

McVie says she reconnected with Mick Fleetwood prior to joining the 2014 Fleetwood Mac “On With the Show” tour. She’d been living a solitary life in rural England when the drummer traveled to London in order to escort her to Hawaii, the destination she chose to help her overcome her fear of flying.

“I'd been virtually doing nothing in the country in 16 years of being a retired lady. Being busy walking my dogs — actually not doing anything very constructive,” she says. “I made one little solo album in my garage.” (2004’s “In the Meantime.”)

Buckingham remembers Fleetwood calling him soon thereafter. “He said, Christine's been over here and, you know, she would like to maybe rejoin the band." For Buckingham, it was a no-brainer.

McVie lets out a big laugh. “It’s unprecedented!”

“Yeah, but a lot of things about Fleetwood Mac are unprecedented,” says Buckingham. “I left for a long time and you guys got two guitar players and went ahead and did that for a while. Then I came back.”

“Weird times,” McVie says.

“Yeah,” Buckingham agrees. “I mean it's a band like no other.”

A better thing's never happened to me. I've reconnected with the band and found a fantastic person to write with.
— Christine McVie on her new collaboration with Lindsey Buckingham
McVie, who is best known for writing and singing Mac gems including “Don’t Stop,” “Over My Head” and “Think About Me,” acknowledges that, early on in the Buckingham-McVie project, she doubted her ability to reconnect with her muse.

“I suppose I wondered if I believed in myself,” she says. “But I was like, 'Go for it, Chris. Go for it.' And, you know, a better thing's never happened to me. I've reconnected with the band and found a fantastic person to write with.”

Looking at Buckingham, she adds, “We've always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we've done between us.”

For his part, Buckingham’s initial songwriting contributions were the product of sessions with Fleetwood and John McVie, which Buckingham invited Christine McVie to augment.

“It was just pieces with no wording,” she says. “ so I put melody and lyrics on some of his material.”

“That was a first,” says Buckingham. “She would write lyrics and maybe paraphrase the melody — and come up with something far better than what I would have done if I'd taken it down the road myself.”

All these years we've had this rapport, but we'd never really thought about doing a duet album before.
— Lindsey Buckingham
Those up on the history of Fleetwood Mac might note in the Buckingham McVie moniker the echo of an earlier duet album, “Buckingham Nicks.” Released in 1973 by the two future Fleetwood Mac members when they were a romantic and musical partnership, the Nicks and Buckingham release led Fleetwood a year later to invite the couple to join his band.

Nicks hasn’t contributed to the forthcoming Buckingham McVie project. She’s been on her own trip. In 2016, Nicks embarked on her “Rockin’ 24 Karat Gold Tour” with the Pretenders as openers. That tour will continue with a few dozen more dates across early 2017.

Her schedule, however, had little bearing on what Buckingham and McVie were creating, says Buckingham.

“All these years we've had this rapport, but we'd never really thought about doing a duet album before,” Buckingham says. “There is that album that I did with Stevie back before we joined the band, but other than that, it's all been Fleetwood Mac or solo.”

Interrupting with a tone of bafflement, McVie says, “And why on Earth? It seems absurd after 45 years.”

“Sometimes,” Buckingham says, “it takes, oh, about 40 years of perspective to figure it out.”

True, but they obviously all love Mick, and touring with Ms. Nicks helps the attendance ($). I think they all enjoy the perks fivesome tours bring - private jets, huge arenas, the adoring large crowds, etc.

Oh yes, absolutely. That's why I think this album is quite bittersweet for them. Of course they are happy to get an album out and I'm sure proud of what they've created. They are probably quite frustrated its come to this though. Its certainly far from their chosen scenario.

I think Lindsey in particular has changed his attitude to the 'Big machine'. Though he obviously doesn't need the money I think it helps his ego within the context of his family. I'm sure he's proud his kids get to see their Dad as a huge star. I think that has as much to do with it as the money. Christine and John are just happy going with the flow.

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie Album Due

BFF’s McVie and Buckingham on the cover of 1982’s Mirage

Fleetwood Mac fans eager for a follow-up to 2003’s Say You Will will have to make due with the news today of the unlikely pairing of members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie. In an interview published in the January 13 Los Angeles Times, the pair revealed that they are collaborating on a studio album with the rather ordinary working title, Buckingham McVie. The paper says it’s expected in May.

And to further tease Mac fans, two of the quintet’s other members–the band’s namesakes, in fact–Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are participating in the project. That leaves one Stevie Nicks as the sole member of the band who’s not involved.

After her return to the band, following a long (1998-2004) hiatus, McVie and Buckingham began collaborating. McVie tells the Times: “We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us.”

Watch the band perform at her first concert back, September 30, 2014

Buckingham had apparently been noodling around with various songs. “It was just pieces with no wording,” McVie says. “So I put melody and lyrics on some of his material.”

“That was a first,” says Buckingham. “She would write lyrics and maybe paraphrase the melody — and come up with something far better than what I would have done if I’d taken it down the road myself.”

For Fleetwood Mac, McVie penned the classic rock hits “You Make Loving Fun,” “Don’t Stop” and “Think About Me” and co-wrote “Hold Me.” Buckingham wrote “Go Your Own Way,” “Second Hand News” and “Tusk.”

1973’s Buckingham Nicks album is long out-of-print

The collaboration’s working title is reminiscent of a 1973 release from Buckingham Nicks. Though a commercial flop, the two were subsequently invited to join Fleetwood Mac in 1975.

Related: The story of Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk”

Of the new work, Buckingham says: “All these years we’ve had this rapport, but we’d never really that about doing a duet album before.”

As for “the mother ship,” for those keeping score at home: since 1990’s Behind the Mask–a span of 27 years–the group has released a whopping two studio albums.

Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac to Release First Full-Length Duet Album
1/13/2017 by Lyndsey Havens

Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriters Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham have a long and winding shared history, much of which will be chronicled on the pair's upcoming duet album, tentatively titled Buckingham McVie.

“All these years we've had this rapport, but we'd never really thought about doing a duet album before,” Buckingham told the Los Angeles Times. “There is that album that I did with Stevie back before we joined the band [1973's Buckingham Nicks], but other than that, it's all been Fleetwood Mac or solo.”

While the album will exist as a separate entity from Fleetwood Mac, that hasn't prevented the rock band's drummer, Mick Fleetwood, and bassist, John McVie, from assisting in the studio, Los Angeles' Village, where the iconic Tusk was recorded in the late '70s. Stevie Nicks has not contributed, though, as she has been on her own solo tour -- Rockin’ 24 Karat Gold Tour -- with opening act the Pretenders, which extends into 2017.

Aside from Buckingham McVie being the first duet album to arrive from current Fleetwood Mac members, it will also mark McVie's return to music after over a decade of stepping back from the band.

“I suppose I wondered if I believed in myself,” she said. “But I was like, 'Go for it, Chris. Go for it.' And, you know, a better thing's never happened to me. I've reconnected with the band, and found a fantastic person to write with. We've always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we've done between us.”

While there is no release date set for Buckingham McVie, it could arrive as early as May this year.

Yep.

And I think it's quite interesting that they talk about how Christine came in and put lyrics and melody onto a number of his musical tracks. That's always Stevie's forte---given that she's not a strong musical composer-- taking someone's track and putting words and melody to it. "He never did that with me!!!" a la World Turning.....

also, when did her tour become "Rockin'" 24k gold?? Did I miss the "rockin'" title somewhere along the road? Oy.

yeah...

also, not calling this incarnation Fleetwood Mac (however much that's just plain inaccurate) frees them from any commercial obligations or expectations for the album and the tour. this is a purely artistic outfit now.

while the band that is now called Fleetwood Mac has been turned into just a non-creative moneymaking oldtimers touring machine. which sullies Fleetwood Mac name somewhat but whatever.

I wonder how much Christine and Lindsey have left in their creative tanks. If it's only this album, and not calling it Fleetwood Mac doesn't rock the boat as far as Stevie is concerned, which gets them across the finish line with the classic lineup in tact, then I get why they're not calling it Fleetwood Mac.

However, if there is a future with this, if there are several albums in them, then have Fleetwood Mac go out as creative entity. That's what people will remember.

Nice omission of Go Your Own Way and Don't Stop . . .

Anyway, the only reason people don't think of them beyond those albums is that they really haven't given people a reason to. Three studio albums in thirty years isn't a way to stay relevant. If they went out with five albums in three years (which isn't that hard to do these days, even at their ages), people will talk about that years after they're all gone. Nobody will remember that they decided to do another greatest hits tour before calling it a day.

People remember that with Johnny Cash.

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie Plan Duet LP
Duo, as Buckingham McVie, aim to release new album in May

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are working on a duet album together that they'll release under the moniker Buckingham McVie. Richard E. Aaron Redferns
By Daniel Kreps

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are working on a duet album together that they'll release under the moniker Buckingham McVie.

Four months after Mick Fleetwood hinted to Rolling Stone that McVie and Buckingham "could probably have a mighty strong duet album if they want," the singers formally revealed the project Friday in an interview with Los Angeles Times.

"All these years we've had this rapport, but we'd never really thought about doing a duet album before," Buckingham said. "There is that album [Buckingham Nicks] that I did with Stevie [Nicks] back before we joined the band, but other than that, it's all been Fleetwood Mac or solo."

The album, tentatively scheduled for release in May, features musical contributions from fellow Mac members bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood. However, McVie and Buckingham were clear that the LP would arrive under the Buckingham McVie name and not the Fleetwood Mac.
Since McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac following a 16-year sabbatical from the band, it's been rumored that members have been hunkered down in Los Angeles' Village Studios working on their first new LP since 2003's Say You Will.

However, as Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone in an August interview, while the band recorded a "huge amount" of new music since McVie's return, "None of it's with Stevie… or very little."

"Some of it is very, very old stuff that Lindsey maybe did with [Nicks] years and years ago. We're not quite sure what will happen with it," Fleetwood said at the time. "Stevie has her own life and career and I think … you know, she just doesn't want to spend the time right now. And we're quietly saddened about that but also I sort of understand."

Fleetwood added that "when Christine came back, she came back with a bag full of goods. She ****ing wrote up a storm."

The following month, McVie told Rolling Stone, "We cut seven songs in the studio already for the start of a brand-new studio album... We shelved that temporarily and then went on the road and did the tour. And now, actually, I think we're going back in in October to try to finish it off. Stevie hasn't participated yet, but hope springs eternal... But Lindsey and I, we have plenty of songs. There are tons more in the bag that we have yet to record. And they're fantastic. So we're going to carry on and try to finish the record."

There's a certain irony in all of this. Had they not had to fight for the legal right to the Fleetwood Mac name, they wouldn't have moved to Los Angeles. Had they not moved to Los Angeles, they wouldn't have met Lindsey and Stevie.

I also find it funny that Mick didn't have a problem using the name with Billy, Bekka, and Dave Mason fronting the band, but won't use it for an album that features 4/5 of the band's most recognizable lineup.

Have to agree with you.....they were fine with continuing on, and putting out new music, without Lindsey and Christine, but they can't/won't do the same without Stevie? If the four of them are on all the tracks, then it IS a Fleetwood Mac album!
It's almost like they're playing it safe, and keeping the door open, just in case....but, sadly, I think that ship has sailed!!

Really looking forward to this collaboration.
Seeds We Sow was easily one of Buckingham's best solo albums; and Christine's music deserves to be brought into the 21st century with a modern sound.

I think it's going to sound a lot more current and interesting w/o Stevie.
As much as I love her voice, I like the idea of something unpredictable and unexpected.

As we've said before, doing it without Stevie itself garners a lot of automatic publicity. Everyone will want interviews because of that aspect, which might alert more people to the album. I don't expect them to buy it, but just getting the public to hear a single or two would be great.

Taking that one step further, if they pushed the release date closer to the tour, called the album Fleetwood Mac, and fired Stevie in a very public way, I could see it being a marketing goldmine for the album and tour.

Not sure they can kick her out at the moment as they are all signed up for a world tour as a 5 piece. If they fired her before then they may find themselves the target of legal action by the promoters. That is going to be one seriously uncomfortable tour.

It's wonderful news! I sort of wish they would call it, "Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham McVie" (crediting the band members that are participating) and then maybe try to get that old "dinosaur of an album out" and call it "Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham Nicks" and have John and Mick spice it up. We would get TWO new albums and finally be able to stop asking for it to be released. Whatever they do, I hope it comes out soon!

I'm not bashing on Stevie but at some point she will be asked by the media about her feelings concerning B/M. I'm calling it now, she will say something like they don't listen to each other's work outside the band and will bring up that they have never been supportive of her solo career. While this may be true to some extent, B/M is not a solo project. It is essentially a Fleetwood Mac record without Stevie Nicks. I think it is gracious of the others (most likely Mick) not branding it for what it really is. I'm very interested to hear the Stevie camp's spin on this.

Right. And, if you want to use a name for the 'band', and if the four people involved are Fleetwood, McVie, McVie, and Buckingham, and contractually, politically or otherwise they can't use the last names of 2 of the people, makes sense to use the last names of just the other 2 people. But the fact that Buckingham McVie mirrors Buckingham Nicks just adds a certain other layer to it, at least for me.

if album is by Fleetwood Mac, they would need all current members to:
a) sign off on the release
b) get any royalties from it ((granted there won't be much, same as it wouldn't have from all 5 FM album, but legally).

so not calling it FM, unless they wanted to fire Stevie first, maybe purely a contractual thing.

not personal, just business.

I thought sole ownership of the name was to Mick and John, thereby meaning they legally could release an "FM" album even if it were only those two playing lyric-less drum-n-bass music if they so desired.

To my knowledge, there is no current recording contract or future royalty agreement between the members of the band, and no reason why this would've changed between 2013 (the last release of music under the FM name, and of course sans Christine, when they were under no recording contract) and now. I have no official verification of this, but I'm thinking this was done for reasons other than legal obligations. Just my .02 :xoxo:

My initial reaction is...wow, cool. So much of their combined music has been so good over the years, that there is no reason to believe that this won't be a really good release. A few questions though...

1. Is it really going to be duets? Like, they each take turns singing solo on every song? Because that would seem to be maybe not as interesting for a whole CD. I guess Don't Stop and World Turning could be termed duets, though I never thought of them that way, not in the way that Stop Draggin' My Heart Around or Leather and Lace were. But some of their best songs (i.e. Hold Me, Eyes of the World) don't have separate vocals.

2. Do you think there will be a tour? :) If so, what size venues do you think they'll play?

3. What will Stevie's reaction to all of this be?

4. Most importantly, will they reprise the Buckingham Nicks album cover with an updated but similarly posed shot of Lindsey and Christine?

4. Most importantly, will they reprise the Buckingham Nicks album cover with an updated but similarly posed shot of Lindsey and Christine?

To #1: I'd say yes and no, depending on the songs. Chris and Lindsey harmonize very well together so...

To#2: Probably smaller halls and theatres, about 2000 seaters, max.

To #3: She will likely make passive aggressive comments that pretend to be supportive. She is not alone in doing this. Chris, Lindsey, and Mick have all done this before, too.

To #4: Lord, I hope not!

My initial reaction is...wow, cool. So much of their combined music has been so good over the years, that there is no reason to believe that this won't be a really good release. A few questions though...

1. Is it really going to be duets?

those media outlets that termed it "album of duets" misrepresented what they said. they mean BM duet similar to how once upon a time there was BN duet. BN was not an album of duets right?

12. Do you think there will be a tour? :) If so, what size venues do you think they'll play?
hope so! immediately after album comes out in may would be great! i'm hoping for intimate venues like theaters and hopefully clubs like 9:30 and the fillmore. i'd hate arena tour.

13. What will Stevie's reaction to all of this be?

who cares.

Finally. Thank God. They got tired of waiting for "her" to show up for work and are releasing a Fleetwood Mac album. (If Mick and John are the rhythm section then it is a Fleetwood Mac album, whatever they officially call it. That duet album talk is just a way to lessen the number of awkward questions about just why "she" isn't participating.) At worst this can be considered Tango in the Night Part II; it may even sound better, since "she" is not gurgling through the motions.

Im big fan of Stevie and Im sad that she´s not gonna participate, but it´s her decision. I would be much more sad if that would be the reason to the rest of the band not to record anything new, even when they want. So Im very happy now, that they found a way to record new album without her.

But I have to say that it´s little unfair to Christine, because when she left and the rest recorded Say You Will, it was still Fleetwood Mac. So I dont see the reason why now it shouldn´t have been called Fleetwood Mac album when it´s without Stevie. There was so many incarnations of Fleetwood Mac in history, that it would not be so special... it certainly would have bigger potential of sales with the name Fleetwood Mac. So I guess that they feel that the popularity of Stevie and her being in Fleetwood Mac is so strong, that they need to call it diferently... but yeah, I think it would be more fair to Chrstine to keep the name Fleetwood Mac.
But anyway, who cares... there will be new music from these two and Im really looking forward to it.

I'm very excited about this! I do feel it's unfair to Christine to have to give the album and project a name that isn't Fleetwood Mac. But the comment regarding lawyers, managers, and going to the press seems accurate. Stevie has quite the ego, and it's a shame it's gotten in the way of being with her closest musical family for something special they haven't done since 1987/2, depending on who is asking. But I am looking forward to these present-day harmonies from folks interested in the music.

To be fair to Stevie, Christine retired. Christine didn't have any reason to sick the lawyers, managers, or press on the band, because she wasn't going to be in it anymore. Stevie is still contractually a member of Fleetwood Mac and has signed on to go out on the road with them.

Nobody here knows what words Stevie and Lindsey might have had between them during the last tour. They haven't gotten along for years and perhaps she has reached the point where she no longer cares to record with him. It's their business. Instead of being happy new music is coming, certain people on this board STILL have to resort to name calling and put downs. Outside of Fleetwood Mac, I haven't heard of people that work with Stevie having horrible things to say about her. Are you still pissed at Lindsey for bailing out on the TITN tour? Things happen. Be happy you are getting new music. They aren't going to call the new album Fleetwood Mac because the contract for all 5 is signed for an upcoming arena tour. Plain and simple. The Ledge is a great board, but also has a LOT of mean spirited hatefulness going at times. I don't understand it.
I doubt Stevie cares that they are putting out music without her as she chose not to be a part of it.
So, be happy you are getting the new album:xoxo:

As an enormous fan of this band and of each member (especially Stevie - I am not gonna pretend she's not my favorite) - I am incredibly happy to see this come to fruition. With all of the back and forth that has went on with this - I am happy to see the name Buckingham McVie and that all four are involved.

Would I have preferred all 5 - ABSOLUTELY - but, Stevie practically dared them to release this without her and they are. She apparently doesnt want to work with Lindsey and at this point in the game, she has earned the right to say no, despite what the rest of the band and the fans want.

As for what Stevie's response will be - I imagine she will ignore it completely as this has been one of her biggest complaints with FM as a whole is that they have ignored her solo projects.

I am disappointed as an ancient fan that the final nail in the coffin for one more album from the Rumours five is being hammered in. I do look forward to hearing this album. Christine without Lindsey is a solid pop songwriter and talented musician but with him she has reached the sublime. It is no coincidence that her 12 year run of extraordinary hit singles began with his entrance and ended with his departure from Fleetwood Mac.

No. He left the band, letting them go on as Fleetwood Mac without him. Same with Christine. And, they both came back to make more new music, which is what I want as a fan.

I get that there was probably a lot of pressure on Stevie to do the pending tour, and especially the album. My problem is that she didn't walk away from the band if she wasn't ready to be a member in full before committing to anything. She accepted no less from Christine when Christine wanted to record, but not tour, and while I hated that it had come to that, I agreed with it and felt it was the right call.

we were discussing on another board, they can easily release this album now in May, tour it as Buckingham McVie, tour as all 5 in 2018, and then take the rest of their new music, add couple of Nicks songs and release a Fleetwood Mac whole lineup album in a few years. this doesn't have to be their last album.

the only problem with that is that if we can learn from history, i don't see Nicks agreeing to it, unless something drastic happens to change her mind.

Dick Cheney must care. According to his Facebook page

Will never happen.....Stevie and Lindsey jointly bought the rights to BN years ago....they would both have to agree to release it, and I don't see that happening!

As a huge Stevie fan, I thought I would post my opinion on this recent news. While I am a fan of Fleetwood Mac as a whole, Stevie is my favorite singer of all time and the only Mac member whose solo career I truly follow. I'll admit I have never heard any of Lindsey's solo beyond his hits, but I do own and love Christine's 1984 album. That being said I am happy for Chris and Lindsey. I see a lot of other Stevie fans on social media that seem to think that this announcement is hurtful to Stevie. While I can see how the name thing is a little too similar to Buckingham Nicks, I'm not sure what else they would call it if they aren't calling it Fleetwood Mac. I guess many people see it as a jab at Stevie for her going on her solo tour. Had Stevie mentioned in interviews that she would contribute to the album after her solo outing, then I could see this as something against her. Although we don't know what was said behind closed doors between the band, Stevie's interviews seem to suggest that she prefers touring only with Fleetwood Mac. Sure, I would have loved to have another album with all 5 but I think this solution works for everyone. Christine and Lindsey are both so talented and I think it's great they have new music to share. I've also enjoyed Stevie's tour immensely and hope that she'll release a 24 Karat Gold Part 2 if this pushes the Mac world tour back to 2018. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

It's great to read that something new will now happen, instead of the same cycle of Fleetwood Mac drama. Lindsey and Christine can release their music and Stevie can be free to do what she loves. She's teaching us a great lesson here  Don't do something when your heart really isn't in it, no matter what other people think, or what other people want us to do. Stick to your guns, look after yourself and the others will figure it out between themselves.

I'm looking forward to hearing the new music and I'm glad the members can go their own way when they need to......

I would have loved an album with all 5 members, but if it's not going to happen that's fine, other good things will come and this album is hopefully just the start.

I do. I mean, she could just send demos and let the production get done without her, then come to the studio for 2 or 3 weeks, sing some background, do her stuff. Let herself be seen for a little promotion and sack in a big check. That's not much to do for making FM fans happy.

And honestly - if she can stand working with Dave Stewart, what could possibly be her problem, other than she wants Say-Yes-People around her at all times. I guess that neither Christine, nor Lindsey reflect too well on that adolescent nonsence of hers (examples: a freaking horse on the cover and some Vampire songs inspired by youth books) and she knows it. She'll have to try harder with FM and she is not used to try at all anymore, with her last solo "efforts" for reference.

This guy is a musician of some sort, been backstage at a lot of things, I've followed him on instagram and twitter for a while and he's met with Lindsey many times (he's signed guitars for him and everything, was part of a group that was with him and Neale at his hotel after a show on the last tour, etc) and has also met the other members, so he seems well connected enough to assume that he's fairly reliable about what he's saying.

Obviously the album wasn't done out of disrespect to Stevie, especially considering that some of the songs were originally intended for her to complete. They tried to get her to contribute, so why anyone would think this was done as a slam against Stevie is beyond me. If anything, by not calling it Fleetwood Mac, they're showing Stevie a lot of respect.

Exactly, why would they create music to spite someone else. That's not their style at all. They are artists that want to create and perform. And she didn't want that so they forged on without her. I don't see where any disrespect comes from. And calling it Buckhingham/McVie... well.. that's their names.. I love the concept. It has me very excited.

To fill in the gaps, I hope Lindsey does that voice manipulation thing he apparently does to his own voice on demos for the Stevie parts/harmonies. That would be fun!

Also, I wish I could JUST be excited about the new album, but I actually envision Buckingham McVie (w/ John and Mick) as an entirely new entity that hopefully will continue to release new music for as long as they are able to write and sing.

I'm not sure about this. I have read numerous interviews throughout the years and both Lindsey and Stevie have said they want Buckingham Nicks rereleased but that it's out of their hands; however, they didn't say why that's the case. Well, my dream would be if Stevie had cooperated with them in the same way, sending demo's to Lindsey, let him fool around with them, let her respond, also on instrumental sketches from him, and then take the results into the village recorder for definate recording. I'm not under the impression that Lindsey freaked the shut out of Chris during these sessions. Nicks backed out on old images. ITS a damn shame.

I do respect that you're feeling disappointed and even share the sentiment to an extent. An album with all five would be fantastic, but Stevie has a right to choose what is best for her, just as Lindsey and Christine have also done.

there are 180+ posts in this thread already, countless pages, with people celebrating that we are actually really getting this new music, and discussing how exactly it will all happen. and among those there are less than handful negative posts. most really don't care about Stevie at this point as she is not involved. yet all of the sudden several posts showed up just now lecturing and accusing fans of stevie-bashing. it was bound to happen knowing this crazy fandom. but i'm happy to see how enthusiastic and positive both here and all the social media reactions are. christine mcvie and lindsey buckingham are still trending on facebook, and it's been like that the whole day.

I'm not being negative. Although I'm not nearly as big a fan of LB and CM as Stevie, I'm very happy this album is coming out. I'm sure it will be very good, I'm sure the fans will be thrilled, and I don't see it as disrespectful or a slap in the face to Stevie in any way, shape, or form. I was merely pointing out that when someone questioned why the project wasn't being called Fleetwood Mac, it was suggested that Stevie threatened to sick lawyers on them and go to the press when no one knows that at all. Even you offered a more sensible explanation for the decision that wasn't personal or insulting to anyone. Maybe Stevie did do that, but I doubt it. I can't imagine you would stay silent if someone accused Lindsey of such off-putting behavior if there wasn't a trace of evidence to suggest it.

my point remains. huge majority here have been nothing but positive about this project, similar as on social media. it's a win-win situation and something we've been hoping and waiting for since 2014 tour started. i still can't believe it's finally happening and that something will not stop it, it's been a such a long and frustrating wait.

some peeps (not saying you!) come here just looking to stir trouble while trying to stick that label on others instead.

I agree that it seems unfair. But the decision appears to be a business one. When Christine left, she didn't want to tour at all. She wanted to work on a new studio album with them but not go out on the road, so, given the ultimatum, she left completely, without ever intending to return. Since tour money has always been a BIG priority in Mac, her decision seemed irrevocable.

Stevie is willing to tour all the friggin' time. So, there you have it...

Also, if Christine had stayed in 1998 and Stevie left for good, the ensuing album would have been Fleetwood Mac. They were all a lot younger then. They had hopes of a "new" era of more music, more tours. Here, at this time, they're all trying to tie a bow on the thing and put it to bed before they die. By calling the album Buckingham/McVie, they avoid disturbing a situation that is A LOT more delicate than it was in 2003.

Unfair? Yes. Realistic/pragmatic: yes.

I also agree with others who are saying that calling the project Buckingham/McVie gives the two a lot more artistic freedom to do whatever the heck they want. They get to call the shots, they get to determine the direction of the production, they get to essentially break free of some of the traps Fleetwood Mac has laid for itself since 1980.

Buckingham Mac

Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham McVie that has been reported as their working title actually works the best, and makes it very clear what it is.

all other iterations sound like a FM cover band.

I was thinking about that. Initially I thought the idea of Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham McVie would be a great idea as it would give credit to the band name without it actually being called Fleetwood Mac. The more I think about it though, the more I think it would be a bad idea. It tends to remind me of all the touring oldies bands that have broken up and splintered into more than one off-shoot. The ones that have one band member that has to add their own name for legal reasons and it always sounds a bit sad. 'Jeff Lynne's ELO'.As I write, I actually can't think of any other examples but you get what I mean.
Then there's the oldies acts that tour as '....from....'
Anyway, I don't think Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham McVie has been reported anywhere has it? Just Buckingham McVie.

Buckingham McVie's Fleetwood Mac (like Peter Green's FM).:angel:

they would not be trending all over social media if the headlines and tags were not "Fleetwood Mac's....". if they want the project to be heard, the fact they are majority of Fleetwood Mac needs to be very clear. what they did (or more probable, what headline writers for LA Times did!) was very smart.

As of now I am officially an ex fan of Stevie's. That being said I am extremely excited to hear this music. I only hope they get incredible recognition from critics and possibly some award nominations. We know it isn't going to sell, but that's ok. A grammy nod would just make my year. Stevie will not be happy. Please God let this album be great.

Sorry Elle, I don't know whether I'm just being a bit slow here...what are you referring to? All I see is the headline of the article;

Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham talk about making their first duet album.

And then the line embedded in the article;

The album coming out of these sessions, however, won’t bear the Fleetwood Mac imprimatur. Rather, the release with the working title “Buckingham McVie” will arrive as the first full-length collaboration between the pair.

I'm not seeing anything that mentions 'Fleetwood Mac's Buckingham McVie' or 'Buckingham McVie's Fleetwood Mac'

I think alluding to the fact they are both in Fleetwood Mac within the title of the piece is just a natural thing to write for the benefit of readers.

no, you are right. i'm just playing with some words. there's nothing to suggest FM's will be in the duo title. but they should definitely advertise it as FM's, just as that article and all that followed it did.

i've been in small towns following various Lindsey tours enough to know that if you mention his name people will give you a blank stare. but if you then tell them he's from Fleetwood Mac the lights immediately go on.

i suspect it may be similar with Christine's name, but might be different in the UK?

Well, they are already getting a lot of attention. They don't necessarily need to officially involve the use of the Fleetwood Mac moniker as the media are going to automatically point out they are from Fleetwood Mac when they are talking about/reviewing the album. In fact the intrigue created by the use of a completely different name seems to be making it news worthy and could be a good marketing 'angle'.

"Even you" was because you had already shared an explanation of why the project might need to be called something other than Fleetwood Mac, an explanation which is probably the most reasonable and likely of any we have heard, so I figured you would understand that we don't necessarily have to assume a worst-case scenario regarding animosity between the band members.

She's having a ball. No stress through pressure of having to write something new that has ANY quality, and no stress for having to work with The Impossible To Work With In A Studio.

Still, 3 others don't seem to have ANY problem to work with him.

But maybe she slowly will see that she, and she alone, killed her band as a creative force.

The band is bending over backwards to be nice to Stevie. They could have and should have called the album Fleetwood Mac. She chose not to participate. They did not want to piss her off to make it seem they kicked her out and recorded without her even though this was her decision. This really says a lot if you read between the lines. As someone else pointed out, the Say You Will album was called Fleetwood Mac even though Christine did not participate. It seems they are walking on eggshells

Christine left the band, Stevie is still in the band that is the difference. I do think that if they asked Stevie ( which they did) and gave her the time to contribute ( which they did) and Stevie decided not to record......The album should be a Fleetwood Mac album.

'Fleetwood Mac duet album to be released'?
I think that's an oversight on their part as they clearly refer in the body of the article to the fact that it won't actually be a Fleetwood Mac album.
I think the press are generally clear that it is a FM album that just wont officially be called a FM album.

You know, I'm warming to the idea that even if it were ever to be released as a Fleetwood Mac album, it would still be a good title for the album to call it Buckingham McVie. I think I'd like that over Carnival Begin or Red Sun or Too Far Gone or whatever.

FULL TEXT OF ARTICLE:

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are set to record a duet album together under the name Buckingham McVie. The moniker harks back to the cult duo Buckingham Nicks, which Lindsey and Stevie Nicks formed before joining Fleetwood Mac.

The singers told the LA Times that their new record should be released in May, with Buckingham commenting on the particular chemistry between the two: “All these years we’ve had this rapport, but we’d never really thought about doing a duet album before.” he said.

McVie added: “We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiralled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us.”

The partnership had been hinted at several months previously when drummer Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone that the pair “could probably have a mighty strong duet album if they want.”

However the project is slightly more of a group affair than the title suggests – fellow Mac members bassist John McVie and Fleetwood are set to perform on it. This is despite the fact there is still no sign of the first Fleetwood Mac since 2003’s Say You Will. Fans had hoped that when McVie rejoined the band in 2014 following a 16 year break, there would be a new album – but securing time with Stevie Nicks, who has been concentrating on her solo career, has been the stumbling block.

In October last year, McVie told the Guardian that the album was “half-finished … it’s just seven tracks that we’ve got, and they’re only with guide vocals”. Talking of its “fantastic variety of songs” she said she hoped to finish the album before last Christmas.

I'm not sure about this. I have read numerous interviews throughout the years and both Lindsey and Stevie have said they want Buckingham Nicks rereleased but that it's out of their hands; however, they didn't say why that's the case. I've even read Keith Olsen is the hold up. I have no idea why rereleasing it has been so problematic, but it doesn't seem to be related to any hard feelings between Stevie and Lindsey.

Lindsey wants to rerelease it as an expanded version....Stevie wants to release as it was originally put out. However, Stevie wants a new cover, since she's always hated the cover. Lindsey, however, loves the cover, and doesn't want to change it.
Next year is the 45th anniversary of the album's release...if they don't come to some kind of agreement in the next six years, this album will never again see the light of day!
