Everyone should consider what just happened. A very famous
artist just died. And he just happened to be on the same label
as Fleetwood Mac.
With them not being prepared, as in having sufficient stock of
his music. The highest priority has gone to that artist music.
You would be shocked to see what's coming. And not just CD's.
Vinyl - vinyl - vinyl.
I'm quoting myself. And this might be the reason for the delay.
Remember there are only so many vinyl pressing plants.
The record company cancelled orders for this set for the time being.
The new date listed seems correct at this time. Don't worry.

Well it changed on iTunes. It now says "expected release date September 23"
I'm really bummed, I was really looking forward to listening to this over the summer. I hope there's a good reason for adding two months before the release. Like adding more live tracks. I'll be okay with waiting if they're adding more live tracks.

Could be. Hopefully there aren't issues with the vinyl like there were (are) with the Crystal Visions re-release. I purchased and returned 3 copies of that due to visible blemishes and skips on the "clear" vinyl.

Unfortunately we have just been informed by our supplier that the release date for this title has been pushed back and will now be released on 23rd September 2016. Please note that this date may be subject to change.

There were several albums that had their street dates
bumped on Warner's. But most did not have their album
orders cancelled like Fleetwood Mac's Mirage.
I find that interesting.
Matter of fact the only other album I saw with a quick check
was Soul Christmas (various artists) vinyl. And this title
went from a certain street date to TBD.
So hopefully like I've mentioned before it has to
do with vinyl pressing plants. The availability to
be exact.

Who knows. I was thinking they may have wanted it released right at the very end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth to boost their profits at the end of the year? Maybe because it's closer to the holidays and people spend more money?

First listen: Fleetwood Mac revisits 'Mirage,' inside the studio and out
After "Rumours" became the biggest pop album of the 1970s, Fleetwood Mac followed it up with 1979's shockingly different "Tusk" -- a critical success, but a relative commercial flop.
Where to go from there? 1982's "Mirage," which leans closer to the "Rumours" sound while maintaining a distinct identity. The band will "Mirage" in September with a new deluxe package that showcases the remastered original album, a full disc worth of alternate takes and B-sides, and a third disc of live tracks.
A month before its release, we had the chance to check out the deluxe version of "Mirage;" it measures up on all fronts, and should thrill fans. Here are six reasons why it works:
The original album itself: "Mirage" gets overlooked next to smashes such as "Rumours" or "Tango in the Night," or the audacious "Tusk." But "Mirage" stands as a strong album on its own merits. The band's trademark soft-rock harmonies ("Can't Go Back," "Love in Store"), deft musicianship and range of songwriting styles (from the country-tinged "That's Alright" to the folk-punk fusion of "Eyes of the World") are out in full force. Lindsey Buckingham's guitar prowess is on display in the five tracks he wrote or co-wrote. Christine McVie's pop craftsmanship and keyboard talents shine on her four tracks. And Stevie Nicks' trademark raspy vocals command attention on her three tracks. While the surface angst of "Rumours" may not infuse all of "Mirage," the creative tensions from five years earlier certainly endured and played a role in the end product.
The hits: Nicks' "Gypsy," a sentimental ode to the broke-but-in-love early days of her doomed relationship with Buckingham, is the album's best-known track. (Its music video was among the early trend-setters for MTV extravagance, and that extended version is found on the second disc). "Gypsy" remains an adult-contemporary radio staple today, but somehow failed to crack the pop Top 10, peaking at No. 12 on the charts. The album's top pop hit, reaching No. 4, was McVie's "Hold Me," a duet featuring blissful harmonies with Buckingham. ("Love In Store" also cracked the Top 25.)
Influences past and future: Buckingham's "Oh Diane" steps outside the band's usual sound and reflects the impact left on him by rock and roll icons Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley. The electronic sound that fuels his "Empire State" will be refined and surface more prominently five years later, and with bigger success, on "Tango in the Night." The buoyant "Eyes of the World" hints at the "Vacation" soundtrack success that Buckingham would see the following year. And McVie's sedate "Only Over You," with silky vocals and an almost-sparse arrangement, could have been plucked from the "Tusk" sessions -- it evokes the same sound as her other contributions on that album.
Production values: Richard Dashut (who co-wrote three tracks with Buckingham) and Ken Caillat share producer credit with the band, as they had done since "Rumours." Caillat handled the new 5.1 surround sound remix of "Mirage" this spring, and the result is superb. One example: On "Hold Me," Buckingham and McVie's breathy vocals shine distinctly as they harmonize, underpinned by John McVie's vibrant bass work and Mick Fleetwood's strong, steady hands at the drums. Blended together, it's easy to see why the track was such a big hit.
B-sides and outtakes: Hardcore fans will most appreciate the second disc of songs, which takes you into the recording sessions to see the evolution of some songs. The early, piano-driven version of "Hold Me" features backing vocals by Nicks that don't work anywhere near as well as Buckingham's in the final take. The early version of "Gypsy" keeps its charm in a simpler, stripped-down take. We briefly hear Nicks give instrument-tuning advice at the beginning of "If You Were My Love," an outtake that would have made the album if it was released during the roomier CD era. The second disc also contains the original vinyl version of "Straight Back," a track that was modified for CD and cassette releases of the album.
Live Tracks: 13 tracks from the "Mirage" tour's 1982 stop in Los Angeles round out the set. On stage, the band doesn't stray much from the versions played on radio; the audience is fine with that. But those studio versions are so expertly polished that one can be forgiven for preferring the them to the live cuts. On the live CD, the strongest moments come from the deeper cuts, like the nine-minute "Not That Funny," where the band's men -- Buckingham, John McVie and Fleetwood -- take over the jam. An extended version of Nicks' "Sisters of the Moon" adds vocals by Buckingham, layering more intensity on an already powerful track.
The deluxe version of "Mirage," released by Rhino Records, features 45 tracks in all -- 12 on the main album, 20 outtakes and B-sides, and 13 live tracks. Originally set to be released in July, it's now set for release Sept. 23 in a variety of configurations, including vinyl and a deluxe box set. The best bet seems to be the digital download, available for pre-order online for under $20.

I'm not sure why it was done. But early vinyl pressings of Mirage had the original version of "Straight Back" without Stevie's overdubs in the bridge. Subsequent pressings used the remixed version. I like the second version better, but it will be nice to have a clean copy of the original.

I bought the cassette, the day it was released. The guitar solo that's on the end of the song(on the CD) isn't there on the cassette. Not that the song was any shorter....it was just the music without the guitar solo on top of it.

Just to be clear (and stated many times in this thread), there is NOT A DVD VIDEO of a concert with this re-release. The set comes with a DVD-AUDIO ONLY disc that contains both the 5.1 Surround and 24/96 Stereo Audio mixes of the original album. The set also comes with an AUDIO CD of 13 songs from a concert filmed during that tour (same songs on the previously released VHS concert from 1982). You likely already know that, but just in case someone read your post and was going to pay $85 expecting to get a video, they would be disappointed.

Thanks you're right. Curious what people report on the audio.

For sure. To begin with I was excited about the Mirage tour audio, then disappointed, then excited again after listening to my crappy copy and realizing how amazing it's going to sound in the stereo. I am looking forward to shaking the walls with that epic rendition of The Chain.

Stevie really shines on the outtake version of "That's Alright" and sounds superb on both "If You Were My Love" and "Smile At You". Christine is rather embarrassing on "Put A Candle In The Window" - it's up there with "Butter Cookie".
The live recording has been cleaned up and sounds wonderful.

I love Stevie in this era.. It's the last era before she sounds like someone is holding her nose while she is singing.
That's Alright is one of my fav songs.
I've now had a full listen through to the outtake disc of Mirage and it's pretty fabulous.
"Love In Store" is actually superior to the released version except for Stevie's absence during the chorus but the shared backing vocals during the fade make up for this.
"Suma's Walk" is an instrumental version of "Can't Go Back" and is essentially the backing track Stevie sings "Wild Heart" to during the Rolling Stone photo shoot - it's actually quite beautiful.
The more acoustic take of "That's Alright" is simply gorgeous and on a par with the originally released version.
"Book Of Love" is enhanced by Stevie's harmony vocal during the choruses and is far superior to the final version.
"Only Over You" is the mess you'd expect it to be - aimless and awful.
"Empire State" is groovy and would not have been out of place on "Law & Order".
"If You Were My Love" showcases how effortless Stevie's vocals seemed during this era - it's rather superb.
"Smile At You" is a different take from the often bootlegged version from these sessions and features alternate, seemingly ad-libbed lyrics. It's rather fetching and reasonably fierce.
"Goodbye Angel" is a different take from the one released on "The Chain" box set and is rather lovely. Christine seems to feature more prominently on this version but it might just be Lindsey's manipulated vocals.
"Eyes Of The World" is sublime, with an emphasis on those brilliant shared vocals with Christine. It's far more stripped down.
"Straight Back" (Original Vinyl Version) is what it purports to be and sounds fine.
"Wish You Were Here" is not dissimilar to the originally released version but features strings and some lovely harmonies. It's quite beautiful, almost cinematic.
"Cool Water" seems to be the original b-side version.
"Gypsy" (Video Version) is truncated as has been noted from the running time of 4:51.
"Put A Candle In The Window" appears to be a quick run-through of an embryonic Christine tune and does not make much of an impression.
"Teen Beat" seems to be unchanged but to be honest, it's not a track I ever listened to much in the past.
"Blue Monday" is reasonably enjoyable - I'm not sure if it differs much from the bootlegged version.

Me neither. This is even worse than the CDs of Kiln House and Future Games coming out without writer credits. Here you don't even get them when you put the disc in the computer.
I have further quibbles with the packaging (am halfway into Disc 1 at present). Below is the comment I made in the FM Fanatics group on Facebook:
Just bought the Mirage remaster (2-disc edition). Sounds OK so far but a few quibbles with the packaging.
1. There are NO writing credits for the tracks on the bonus disc!!! OK so a lot of them are of stuff we know already but for previously unheard tracks (and there are a few) surely we should be entitled to them.
2. Larry Vigon's awesome penguin drawing has been miniaturised and reverted to grey on black outline.
3. The liner notes - chats with Mick, Lindsey and Stevie about the recording but no questions about the songs and their inspirations or how Chris came to work with writers like Robbie Patton on the album.
4. Also nothing about how the title, cover design etc came about. Come on Warners, I expect more for my bob than this when I buy a deluxe edition.

I am loving the early version of Empire State. He's trying to capture the sound of the city. I wish we could have heard a little more of that in the finished version. Fleetwood Mac sounds delightfully pop punk in this version.

My only complaint is that Only Over You is way too loud at least in the 5.1 mixes. Much louder than the rest. I haven't read back to see if anyone else has noticed it. Has anyone?
On a positive note, the sounds one can hear that were never audible before are mind blowing. One of the top 2 5.1 surround mixes I have ever heard. It's like a new album.

So...I just listened and I gotta say I totally agree with you. Perhaps Ken liked this one the most? Maybe it was for space considerations - the 'definitive' version we've been trading for years runs 5:40, and this one is a minute less - whereas the outtakes CD is 1 hour and 19 minutes and however many seconds - iTunes doesn't tell me - but there may not have been room for the better version. I guess this leaves Warner with more (and better) material for a future release.
I seem to recall though - back in the early aughts, Ken did a Q&A (on here, perhaps?) and I *swear* at the time he claimed to have no knowledge of the song whatsoever. Perhaps he truly wasn't familiar with the song and just picked whatever he heard first?
Here is what I would have preferred:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmGaJtn696o
Versus what we got (assuming someone at Warner will have YouTube cleaned up after this release?)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7c8tWds_H0
And then - there are the other, earlier (?) versions of the song that are presumably Tusk-ish era recordings?

the 5.1 IS a completely DIFFERENT ALBUM. "Only over" through "Straight Back" is like seeing through a microscope for the first time. These songs are the highlight of the 5.1 album. It's more htan just parts we've never heard, there's a vibe and a feeling that feels weird and connected.
"Cool water" at the end of the 5.1 album makes the BEST closer ever. The entire album now plays out like a cast album to a 50s musical!
Truly thrilling!!

Fleetwood Mac: Mirage (Expanded Reissue)
Written By Hal Horowitz // September 20, 2016
http://americansongwriter.com/2016/09/fleetwood-mac-mirage-expanded-reissue/
Fleetwood Mac
Mirage (Expanded Reissue)
(Warner Brothers/Rhino)
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Often considered the belated follow-up to 1977’s mega platinum Rumours, 1982’s Mirage was a clear retreat from the somewhat abrasive, occasionally commercial avant-pop of the controversial Tusk. While that album has, over the decades, come to be respected as Lindsey Buckingham’s creative zenith, it appears Warner Brothers was less enthusiastic about their star act’s detour into the artsy abyss. Perhaps Mac were tired of it themselves, because the slick, glossily produced Mirage seems a capitulation to an audience who might have found the dense, inconsistent, but bold Tusk a musical and drug-fueled bridge too far.
While Mirage was no Rumours, its dozen sophisticated pop songs include such near-classics as “Love in Store,” “Gypsy,” and “Hold Me,” the latter two appearing on most subsequent Mac hits packages. But there are other, often unappreciated gems here too. Selections such as Buckingham’s folksy “Can’t Go Back,” Stevie Nicks’ surprisingly effective foray into country “That’s Alright,” the frisky pop/rock and sumptuous harmonies of “The Eyes of the World” and the closing “Wish You Were Here,” one of the always dependable Christine McVie’s more affecting and least appreciated pieces, are well worth reexamining.
It’s not a great album but it’s a good one, especially for Mac’s avid pop fans, and ripe for rediscovery on this newly remastered and expanded edition. A second disc with 20 previously unreleased rarities includes early, stripped down demos, alternate arrangements and outtakes of nearly every tune, plus some that didn’t make the final cut, and is well worth the price of admission. The no-frills versions are a welcome contrast to the finished product’s often over-produced slickness, and such oddities as a four minute in-studio jam on drummer Sandy Nelson’s 1959 instrumental “Teen Beat” with Buckingham at his most frazzled and unhinged is a major find.
But the real excitement is relegated to the pricey “deluxe” package that includes not only a 5.1 surround audio-only DVD of the album and a remastered vinyl reproduction, but a live show from the ‘82 Mirage tour. This 74-minute concert catches the band on a particularly inspired and improvisation filled night in LA as Mirage was ensconced atop the Billboard charts. It kicks off with a propulsive seven-minute “The Chain” that smokes the studio take into oblivion and features extended performances of two Tusk tracks with a nearly 10-minute “Not That Funny” along with another 8 minutes of “Sisters of the Moon,” closing with an unplugged emotional “Songbird” all in front of a clearly engaged audience.
Whether that’s worth dropping nearly $90 is up to you, but this is an invigorating presentation. It captures these five musicians (before they added an unnecessary backline to bolster the live sound) bouncing energy off each other and feeding from the crowd with exhilarating results.

I just bought the 2 CD package- sorry, but no way in hell was I gonna pay $90 for an album I didn't want, along with an audio concert of a video I already own. Rip off! Now if it had included the entire concert, then I would have buckled and bought it, like I did with the Deluxe Tusk.
Nothing against those folks who did pay for the Deluxe Mirage... I just wish the label had offered more material for the price they're asking.

EDIT: Holy Hell! This version of Empire State is epic! Sounds like it's straight from Tusk with a little bit of the Go Insane album thrown in.

Just listened to Smile at You from the new album for the first time as a thunderstorm swept over Austin...perfect timing. I liked hearing this version, but would have preferred the "Angry" version. At least it's better than the SYW track. Oh well....

Just notified by Amazon I'm getting $10.51 refund for pre-ordering. Sweet.
Strange, that from the live version of Not that funny nearly two minutes were deleted; Mick's drum solo (which starts at app. 7:00) has been edited out.

I could listen to this outtake until my dying day.

Stevie's Mirage songs are my fave of all her FM songs except SYW.
I'm only 1/3 of the way through the remastered album versions

A few thoughts (delux set not arrived yet, so these are based on itunes version)
1. Mirage was my first Fleetwood Mac album, so this was always going to be a bit special. Indeed, I always thought that the production/sound was always top class, even on the original release. In comparison I always think Tusk and Tango 'over produced'.
2. Alternates are wonderful, especially 'Love in Store', 'Hold Me' and 'Gypsy'(long version). But at the end of the day, it's the finished album that is the main deal for me - not sure how often I'll be listening to these tracks in years to come.
3. As I write I'm listening to L.A. Forum disc. What can I say? One of the best versions of 'The Chain' EVER. Would love to have full show released on CD. Can't say I'm too bothered by non release of DVD of this show: full show in audio will do nicely thanks.
All in all - Remastered Mirage was a long time coming and something I didn't think we would ever see, so for that I'm grateful.

The highlight of the 5.1 mix is "Straight Back." It's an entirely different and amazing song. New parts, new vocals, etc! I urge all of you to play this song on your DVD player. While it wont be in 5.1, you'll still hear all the new, amazing parts!!
Does the ending of "Gypsy" on the DVD-Audio sound weird to anyone? Could it be my speakers or system?
At one point it I hear several Stevies and Lindseys singing "I still see your.." but NOT at the same time. Less than a second off for each. Was this intended?!

In case you do want to buy it, I got it for under $50 from the Amazon UK site. :)

That early version of Empire State is bringing me much joy. :woohoo:
It's so many shades of awesome. I love the grittier vocal and the guitars chugging along like a freight train. Lindsey should have saved it for a solo record, but it's nice to hear Empire State in this deliciously raw form.

Much prefer it to the flimsy final version on the record (one of the weakest points on the album). This rawer sound is more in tune with Tusk and Law and Order.
In fact, as with the Tusk Deluxe I find I prefer the majority of the alternate versions.

Is the only way to get the Live CD by buying the 3CD+LP+DVD set?
The digital packages is far cheaper. I miss the pictures, but the CDs&DVD package was too expensive for me this year.
Happy to finally listening Mirage with a decent sound. The original CD sucked. I really like the additional material.

Album Review: Fleetwood Mac - Mirage (Deluxe Edition)
September 26, 2016 By Jeff Burger, Contributor
If ever there was a case of the media building up and then knocking down a band, it was the one involving Fleetwood Mac in the late-'70s and early-'80s. The critics cheered when the group—newly energized by the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks—delivered its chart-topping eponymous album in 1975 and the even better Rumours a year later. But many of those same critics spoke less kindly of the follow-up to Rumours, 1979’s Tusk. According to them, it eschewed commercialism in favor of self-indulgent experimentation, though major experimentation was in fact largely limited to the excellent title cut. Then, when the group reverted to fully accessible form on its next studio album, 1982’s Mirage, reviewers griped that the band was going backwards; never mind that this radio-friendly LP delivered exactly what the critics claimed was missing in its predecessor.
Well, as I noted last year, Tusk ranks among the most underrated albums of the rock era. But Mirage—which Fleetwood Mac’s members recorded in France after pursuing solo projects—is arguably even more underrated. Rolling Stone, for example, allowed that it found the group returning to “simple pleasures” but awarded it only three stars and said “the band seems to have lost its spirit.”
As the fans who took the album to the top of the charts apparently knew, nothing could be further from the truth. This is the sound of a band at the peak of its powers, delivering one great piece of ear candy after another. The melodies are irresistible, the hooks will hook you, and the harmony vocals are impeccable. “Love in Store,” “Hold Me,” and Stevie Nicks’s “Gypsy,” the album’s three hit singles, are all on a par with the tracks on Rumours, and “Only Over You”—which Christine McVie dedicated to the Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson, her love at the time—ranks with her most sublime efforts. And I defy anyone to turn down the volume during the infectious “Oh Diane,” which draws inspiration from early pop/rock.
This deluxe edition of Mirage, the latest in a series of Fleetwood Mac reissues, contains three CDs, an audio-only DVD, a vinyl LP of the original album, and a 12-page, oversized booklet that includes lyrics, credits, photos, and liner notes. Disc one preserves a remastered version of the original album while the second CD collects 20 oddities, including outtakes, demos, and alternate takes, all but three of them previously unreleased. Some of the early renditions of tunes that wound up on Mirage pale by comparison with the final recordings, but fans should enjoy such curiosities as “Suma’s Walk,” the instrumental that evolved into “Can’t Go Back” and a somewhat stripped-down version of “Oh Diane.” And there are some gems here as well, most notably “Goodbye Angel,” which features a compelling lead vocal by Buckingham.
If you already own the original Mirage, though, the biggest reasons to upgrade to this package are CD number three and the audio DVD. The former preserves 13 songs culled from an October 1982 concert at the Forum in Los Angeles, including Mirage’s “Gypsy,” “Eyes of the World,” and “Love in Store” plus such earlier high points as “You Make Loving Fun,” “Go Your Own Way,” and “Rhiannon.” As for the DVD, it features a spectacular 5.1 mix of the original album, plus a reading of “Cool Water,” the Western classic popularized by the Sons of the Pioneers, that shows off the Mac’s vocal prowess. On a good sound system, even longtime fans of Mirage will hear things in this immersive mix that they never heard before.

I've just listened to the remastered version of the album.
Stunning....
I've always maintained that Mirage is a beautiful album that was cruelly punished with a disastrous transfer to digital on the initial (and most widespread) CD release. It saddens me that most will only ever hear that horrible edition of the album. The remaster is one of the best I have experienced...in fact, I would say that the current redux editions of FM material (2013's Rumours, 2015's Tusk, and now Mirage) are among the best remastered collections in terms of sonic quality.
The remaster really allows for the lush production of this album to be truly experienced. This is certainly true of "Gypsy"...in my opinion the best track FM ever made in terms of production quality. In the new remastered form it is stunning...especially on a good sound system. "Love In Store" is equally impressive...those harmonies are (in my opinion) the best the Mac ever put to tape in the studio. "Empire State" is truly a new experience to listen to with the new edition...so much of that track's quirkiness was muddled in the first CD edition. I have never been a fan of "Wish You Were Here", but this has changed. The music to me as always been great, but the lyrics of that song leave a lot to be desired. However, the jam session that takes place in the last minute of the track really shines on the new release...Christine and Lindsey play off of each other so well, and it's apparent more than ever listening to the remastered version.
I am beyond happy that this album...the forgotten jewel in Mac's catalogue...finally got the treatment that it deserved. There are so many wonderful hooks, melodies, and studio magic on this album; the songwriting and craft shine more than ever on this edition.
I have rarely listened to Mirage in the past due to its poor digital release and sound quality (admittedly I have never heard the original vinyl version...). Having a good sonic experience is important to me, and it is why I rarely listen to CDs from the 1980s or early 1990s. So glad that now I can enjoy Mirage the way it was meant to be experienced.

Also love the alt Only Over you it reminds me off That's All for everyone with the wave sounding effect.

So many surprises on the 5.1 surround mix, if you haven't listened to it yet and you have it you should listen to it. Almost like a new album with so many added extras ... I was blown away by all the extra vocals and harmonies I heard for the first time. "That's alright" has a totally different feel, landing somewhere between the original and the new alternate mix. I can see me coming back to this DVD many many times.

I have been listening to the 3 "disc" digital edition from HD Tracks - and have been loving the revisit of Mirage over the last couple of days. The Mirage live concert really cemented my love of Fleetwood Mac all those years ago, after I got over the initial cringe of the moments of drug-fuelled excess, I learnt to see the amazing musicianship and creativity and it become one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac live recordings ever, particularly "The Chain" and "Sisters of the Moon". The version of "Songbird" on that is also unique to that tour, at least to my knowledge, with Christine doing some really beautiful, tinkly piano playing from the 1:55 mark....I always miss that little instrumental part in other live recordings as the song evolved.
One thing I did miss from the set is the 5:21 version of Gypsy....as it extends my favourite part of the song significantly....lots more calls out for the "Bright Eyes" and more guitar solo....but no biggie, as it is readily available on the Chain box set.

I love all the "new" vocals that you can't hear in the regular mix of the album. "That's Alright" is truly superb. The 5.1 mix is bright and brings up Lindsey's incredible guitar work. And yes, those harmonies are classic Buckingham Nicks.
I'm also hearing new "I still see your bright eyes" in "Gypsy" just before Lindsey's solo. Maybe it's a studio trick, but I've never noticed it before. I like how the solo runs about 10 seconds longer, with a nice cymbal crash at the 5:01 mark.
"Eyes of the World" is another standout 5.1 track. Wow, so much goodness going on there. It almost sounds symphonic is parts.

I'm curious... why or how is it that the DVD audio sounds so different and better than the CD? Is it the technology of the DVD itself, or do you have to have surround sound? I just don't understand why there are differences and would appreciate an explanation, preferably in as simplest terms as possible. I have a DVD player but I never use it to listen to music.
Thanks!

DVD audio uses a higher bite rate and broader frequency spectrum. I'm simple terms it is less compressed than what a CD can do. It's closer to being Vinl quality of sound. This is why Super Audio CD and DVD audio are what audiophiles buy when thy are not hoarding vinyl. CDs are nice but even a well mastered CD pales to a good vinyl. This is why having the remastered vinyl will be nice

Thanks, AnthonyMI! It's so odd to me there's such a difference in quality, since on the surface a CD and DVD look the same. I wonder why companies don't sell the audio DVDs on their own then?
And just to be clear, the audio DVD is the original recording, and not something that the band added to the recording later, right?

How much difference is there playing it on a 5.1 surround system as opposed to decent computer speakers or a tv soundbar. Cause I've played it on both the latter options and am still hearing some significant and cool nuances of the songs. Is it worth the investment of buying a 5.1 surround system? I believe they are relatively cheap, so I may just do it anyway.

The other benefit to 5.1 is there is potential to "spread out" the music more...as an example, an instrument could get it's own speaker and therefore not be lost in the mix.
Think of it as the difference between a "constructed" dessert where everything is mixed together into one plate.....compared to a "deconstructed" dessert where you can see all the ingredients and be able to focus on each one.
I'm not the best with analogies, but I tried :)

To get the true benefits of the DVD Audio, it's best to have a 5.1 surround sound speaker system. Without it, the DVD will still sound fab, but you'll be missing all the cool stuff that comes out of the other 3 and a half speakers.

I'm fine that it was cut from Mirage. It always sounded like two different songs to me. The verses, the way she sang them in the '80s, were delicate and beautiful. And then it transitioned into a funky chorus that really clashed. Whenever I listen to it, I'm reminded of Gilda Radner and Steve Martin dancing in the dark on SNL. I tried to find that clip to embed, but it's strangely not posted anywhere, so here's the visual.

5.1 has been around since early 2000s. You can pick up a pretty good 5.1 at Walmart. Problem is they are crappy components.
Your best deal is to hunt at Salvation Army for one someone has gotten rid of. Something like a Onkyo or Denon or even a Sony NON integrated would work. Then get some nice speakers. Not the puny tiny ones you see for watching movies. I have old JBL and Klipsh speakers for watching movies. They are big so they do not need Subwoofers, but you can still use a subwoofer with them.
That is about as good a sound as you are going to get out of 5.1.
Most 5.1 cds also have ANOTHER layer that has ANOTHER even BETTER quality mix on them. This is the DVD-A layer. I know the 2002-ish Rumours DVD had a 5.1 AND a DVD-A layer. The DVD-A layer is supposedly better, but you need a special player that can decode that layer and I think you have to have individual channel outputs on the player to send it to a 5.1 receiver. Most of you wont need that and its too complicated to explain!!
Stick with a nice regulat 5.1 Dolby Digital used from Salvation Army connected to ANY blueray or DVD player and it should decode fine as long as you use the digital outputs.

I purchased the 3CD/DVD/Vinyl Deluxe box set of Mirage purely to get the Live CD (disc 3).
I don't have a record player to play the vinyl and this box set just takes up too much space, so I've decided to sell the box set and purchase the 2-CD edition instead (without the live tracks).
I know you can download or stream the live tracks separately, but as far as physical media goes... why do you have to buy the box set which includes the vinyl just to get the Live CD?
They did the same with the Tusk reissue. I suppose it's some sort of marketing ploy... a bad marketing ploy in my opinion.

They later released the Alternate Tusk as a stand alone vinyl double LP and I believe they released the stand alone Live tracks for download on ITunes

So I finally got around to playing the vinyl copy of Mirage tonight. That is one thick piece of vinyl! No snaps, crackles, or pops! Sounds rich and very clear. Nice addition to the deluxe release.
I think I've played Mirage more in the last two weeks than I've played it since '82. I really appreciate this being done for the fans, unearthing the treasure that this album truly is. I've fallen in love with Mirage, in particular "Only Over You" and "Straight Back". The alternate versions and 5.1 tracks reveal so much more than what the original release did. I'm a happy FM fan!

I agree with you 100% on IYWML.
However, what is on 24 Karat Gold is very similar to her Bella Donna demos/outtakes. Like she wrote it. This is, really, at heart, another example of Stevie not liking the way her song was changed - even if it were for the better - by working with FM, and probably pulling it for that reason.
I am reminded of Natalie Merchant telling why she left 10,000 Maniacs - because she was tired of writing songs by committee. Stevie made a comment of a similar nature in her 24 Karat Gold interviews, where she described working with the session musicians in Nashville, and how they played what she asked them to play, and how that was so unusual because she's used to being argued with (clearly a dig at Lindsey)
"Working at the city’s clockwork pace proved an adjustment for Nicks, who’s accustomed to keeping odd hours while waiting for the muse to strike, but she found the businesslike tone of the sessions refreshing in at least one way — as she joked during the interview, “I’m used to bands where we argue over how to do the song. These Nashville guys just say, ‘Yes, ma’am.'”
Stevie made a comment of a similar nature in her 24 Karat Gold interviews, where she described working with the session musicians in Nashville, and how they played what she asked them to play, and how that was so unusual because she's used to being argued with (clearly a dig at Lindsey)
sounds like you think Stevie should have left FM long time ago. wonder why she hasn't?

looking through threads here today they read like tons of unnecessary negativity towards LB and some of the other FM members. not sure what prompted that in recent days, and especially today.

No, not what I was saying. But...what I am saying is that I understand Stevie's reluctance to work with FM on anything at this point in time. Whether she will or won't, should or shouldn't is not my place to speculate. I'm just saying I understand why it's not fun for her. Stevie wants to make music, and have a good time. It shouldn't be an unpleasant, meticulous chore.

Seriously? This entire forum has been a hate-fest directed at Stevie since Christine came back to Fleetwood Mac. Nearly daily, there are ugly, truly loathsome, revolting, repulsive, and even sickening posts in multiple threads about Nicks. There are some folks here with serious and gross entitlement issues. I might say turn-about is fair play - but I don't have any bad feelings towards Lindsey and would feel equally grossed out if he were getting the same treatment.

i don't know. just look at the threads about possible FM album release and tour without Stevie. there are number of threads diminishing Christine's role and contributions in the band, her musicianship, etc etc. the thread title such as "FM album without Stevie is just a LB solo album" doesn't strike you as a complete dis especially on Christine as a songwriter and then on Mick and John? a number of people here tried to pull these threads of the utter negativity they seem to go to really fast but they quickly get pulled down again.
i won't even comment on all LB blaming, dissing and attempts of diminishing his role in the band that always goes on here, and still does. it should again be enough to look at recent threads here to see plenty of examples. so if there would be any turn-about maybe people are getting tired of that particular line of bashing?

OK, yeah. There has been some of that. But in comparison - no one is talking about Lindsey or Chris in the same way they are talking about Stevie - it hasn't been *personal* with Lindsey or Chris. But Stevie? She's apparently fair game for whatever. She's the scape"goat" for the disappointment of so many regarding the lack of a new FM album. There are comments about her weight, her clothes, her voice, the way she talks, how she's selfish, she's jealous, people saying they *literally hate her*, that she's a bitch - it never stops. It's been every. Single. Day. You should know - you were in all those threads.
If I didn't have a job I am supposed to be doing, I'd spend my day compiling all the vitriol posted here about Stevie over the past 18 months.

i have no idea what she's saying but seems pretty clear she's working real hard trying to instill negativity between fans.
Lindsey sometimes speeds himself up so much he sounds like a chipmunk, Stevie seems to be often nasal enough that she sounds like a goat. neither thing is nice but it is what it is.
Can anybody tell me who wrote 'Put a candle in the window'?

My copy finally arrived last night. I listened to some of it on the ride in to work this morning. The sound quality is fantastic. I love the early take of Love in Store. The alternate take of Only Over You is interesting. The early version of Eyes of the World is great, too.
Have to listen to other stuff soon.
I echo the poster above: who wrote "Put a Candle in the Window"? Nothing on the package indicates the songwriting credits for non-album tracks.

Would anyone else support download stores like iTunes including digital booklets with these Deluxe reissues (such as Mirage), which are usually provided in PDF?
These can be viewed on all portable digital devices and are an alternative to physical booklets that can suffer from wear over time if viewed a lot.
I'm currently having to scan the CD booklets with my scanner/printer, which is the closest I can get to digital artwork.
Some artists now provide all digital booklets with their albums, but not Fleetwood Mac.

No, it's £38 British pounds. So after the conversion and shipping, it will be about $55 US dollars. That is of course if your bankcard does not charge for the exchange in addition.
Are you quoting Amazon UK Marketplace when you said £38? That was me selling my copy. I was the only one selling it at £38. Unfortunately, it's now been sold to someone in the UK.

They seriously need a better marketing team... If they have one, it's definitely stuck in the pre-internet/computer age. :distress:

Nope. that was the price when I pre-ordered it back when it was first announced. The shipping was around $2.99 and the "foreign transaction fee" was $1.99.
Altogether it was $55. Worth it!

This band is a train wreck when it comes to marketing and publicity. The alleged web site Fleetwood Mac.com is dreadful, last updated in 2015 and no mention of the new Mirage release. I get my FM news from the unofficial Fleetwood Mac News and Reviews web site, not the bare bones, uninspired "official" site.

Yes. It's really sad, especially when compared to other bands. The Rolling Stones do a superb job.
Stevie's team is a little better now with the upcoming tour, let's hope it stays this way.

Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage brought the on-again, off-again band into the Reagan era, and now the classic 1982 album is getting a deluxe reissue that adds two discs of rare gold. A disc of demos covers early versions of every song on the album—a highlight is Christine McVie’s initial take of “Hold Me,” which had a traditional piano-rock chorus rather than the smooth, layered experimental totally ’80s vibe the final cut got. (I kinda like the piano-rock version better?) The third disc is a Mirage tour concert from the LA Forum that’s been circulating for years as a crappy bootleg. Nice to have it all cleaned up.—Chris Kohler

Just listened to the surround mix. It's great that many of the surround tracks run longer than on the original album
I think someone mentioned that the video version of Gypsy on disc 2 is cut short? That's it's not really the video version. But it runs 4:26 and that's how long the video is, isn't it? The version on The Chain box set was 5:21 I think, but that one was extended. The 5.1 mix runs 5:02, by the way.

I've no knowledge but my guess is that it is not available because (much of) the pre-rumours music isn't on iTunes. I know you've asked about this (iTunes & early music) before so why not buy the CDs and load them to your iTunes?

The 5.1 mixes of this album are astounding. If you have the box set -- but NOT a surround system, stick the 5.1 disc into you computer (I dont know if this will work on a PC -- but it does on a MAC.) Hit the "TITLE" button on the DVD controler and select either DTS or DOLBY SURROUND. This will unlock a compressed 5.1 mix that you can listen to on your stereo headphones. Some of it is wonky -- but some sound amazing. Try it out on Straight Back or Only over you for a competely different mix. I know not all of you can do that, so here's a quickie sample of the different instruments and mix http://derekbishop.net/straight51.mp3

It was a strange time for Fleetwood Mac when it released Mirage in June 1982. The album came three years after the band’s excessive, coke-fueled double-LP Tusk. It was also the longest gap between albums for the band up to that time, a period filled with solo records from Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The group entered the 1980s—after owning the decade prior—at a bit of a crossroads. To this day, Mirage stands in the shadow of Fleetwood Mac’s classic work. But the back-to-basics pop of “Love in Store,” “Gypsy” and “Book of Love” is as good as anything they’ve done. This reissue deluxe set—in particular the disc of demos minus the gloss and layered harmonies (“Empire State” is especially good)—will also remind listeners that, while Fleetwood Mac’s music has come in and out of vogue, the band’s influence on modern rock will always be enormous.

Wow, that 5.1 mix of Straight Back is like a completely new song. Here's something I don't get though, are all of those extra vocals and instruments on the regular album cut and you just can't hear them? Or were they just mixed in especially for the surround mix?

I think it's a little of both. Based on what Ken & Lindsey said during the Rumours 5.1 interviews, it was pretty much about "how much sound you can fit into a 2 speaker (stereo) mix and still have the song not feel crowded." I think the 5.1 and all those extra chanels allow them to open up the mix and turn up vocals and intruments that were either burried deep in the stereo mix -- or just bring in takes and tracks that werent used becuase there just wasnt room in the mix for them.

I've just watched the "Live At The Forum" concert from 1982, which is featured on the Super Deluxe of Mirage (audio CD only).
Is it just me or did Stevie forget half the lyrics to Rhiannon?
I realise that she was probably off her face at the time. She was much better when she performed that track in 2015 in London, when I saw them live.
