I don't think it's that simple. If this album is going to be good, they need outside producer(s), not Lindsey Buckingham. His production did not do favors to many good songs on Say You Will. I'm tired of his over produced, distorted vocals. I think they need a fresh sound, yet someone who understands how important Mick and John are to the music. I'm not crazy with how the songs sound on the EP or SYW...I'm having a hard time describing what it is exactly, the synthesizers, the "adult-contemporary-ness," having too much going on, etc.

Regarding his handling of Stevie's songs on these projects I agree (vocals were subpar on several tracks), but can go back further to Twisted and Tango in the Night in terms of production. I can see why she's concerned. Mirage was the last time he consistently got it right. That's a long time ago!

Stevie has a lot of songs on 24k that should be played all over the radio. Not happening. Ageism is alive and well in Rock N Roll.

And misogyny. Don't forget misogyny.

We'll like I said before there is no accounting for taste and some people just don't have any.

Oh, for the love of god, get a grip you ridiculous person!

Just because you have an opinion on something does not make you instantly right. Nor does it make anybody else's opinions any less valid.

4) Everywhere got to #15 on the UK singles chart last year because of that commercial with the moon-walking horse.

The "Rumours" reissue from last year went to #3 in the UK album charts and stayed in the top 20 for 3 weeks. "The Very Best Of" reissue from 2009 and the reissue of The Chain boxsett also went top 10 in the last 3 years. Considering that there are more contemporary artists barely scraping the top 20 at the moment in the UK album charts, that's not bad going.

All 3 nights at the O2 last year were sold out in less than an hour - that's 54,000 tickets. The press here for the tour last year and the hype surrounding Christine's return was MASSIVE. It was splashed all over the music magazines and they had a big spread in the Metro newspaper. I've never seen so much Fleetwood Mac related hype in the UK.

I disagree. If there is any question of quality regarding Stevie's songs on Tango, the fault falls on Stevie, not Lindsey. Recall that Stevie didn't dedicate much time or effort to the Tango album. The songs she contributed needed a lot of production to save them, and Lindsey stepped up to plate.

While it is a matter of opinion in regard to the production qualities of Stevie's songs on Say You Will, Lindsey's production approach to Stevie's songs was equal to that of his own songs. And the quality of Stevie's vocals and songs are her responsibility, not his.

The sound of the Say You Will album was of it's time, just as Tango in the Night was. It's very likely a new Fleetwood Mac album will have it's own particular feel and texture. Lindsey is initially responsible for refining the initial Fleetwood Mac/Stevie songs that launched his and her careers. Why would he have an agenda to sabotage her songs?

No one knows Stevie's strategy. Yet, I don't think her perceived hesitance is just about Lindsey's production skills.

To be fair Lindsey was 'polishing a turd' with Stevie's songs for Tango In The Night. In the end I think he did a damn fine job to turn them into something worthwhile. In particular Welcome To The Room Sara is a very average offering on her part but Lindsey crafted it into something I really like (I think it has a nice vibe and stands out on that album as a really earthy rock song).

I am listening to Tango this evening, and although I think Welcome to the Room.. Sara.. and If I See you Again are ok, they just don't fit with the Tango sound. So I created a Tango playlist swapping out Sara for All the Beautiful Worlds and If I See You Again for She Loves Him Still. Flows better and they could have been on that record. Just having fun...

Although I never cared for WTTRS, I see your point. And I don't include Seven Wonders as a Stevie song since she really didn't write it.

I agree and disagree with you. Definitely Nicks' quality (songwriting wise and performance wise) was heavily impacted by her drug use, so I agree with you there. But when you listen to the demo of "Welcome to the Room...Sara" it sounds more serious and works better as a song. Lindsey's "island feel" production for it just really blows the song to smithereens...it doesn't fit the lyrics, it isn't catchy, it basically makes "Welcome to the Room...Sara" a meandering mess (or more of a meandering mess than it initially was).

Yes! This is what baffles me about Tango.....why, when Nicks had vaults of decent songs sitting around, did they accept "Welcome to the Room...Sara" and "When I See You Again", which are pretty subpar for Nicks?

Nicks really made "Seven Wonders" her own, even though she didn't write it.

Did he think the songs where sub par but went along anyway due to a variety of factors including Stevie's lack of involvement in the project? Maybe he was pissed at her and said he thought they had promise knowing they were duds. It's obvious he was pissed at her during that period.

Not sure but what a missed opportunity! Buckingham and McVie both turned in really great songs. If Nicks had been up to the standards of her work on the previous Mac albums, Tango would have rivaled Rumours in song quality.

What I don't get is how "Whole Lotta Trouble" ended up on a solo album when she was in a band with THE Queen of the British Blues and THREE former Bluesbreakers at the time. That would have been epic as a Fleetwood Mac song.

I know. I was wondering why she didn't give it to Fleetwood Mac for BTM, when Rick Vito was in the band. Mick, John, and Christine are British blues legends and Rick is one of the best blues guitarists around. The one time Stevie wrote a blues song and was in a band with four of the best blues musicians, she did it as a solo artist.

The idea of a Stevie-less Fleetwood Mac album, but with Chris and Lindsey, sounds really refreshing.
I finally saw In Your Dreams recently and kind of wished I hadn't. It was so self-indulgent -- a home movie that really did very little other than feed her ego. I thought from about the point of the Soldier's Angel story to the end was the most interesting. But for the most part, it was too close of a look into someone who I'd rather know through just her voice and harmonies.

Christine and Lindsey are a breath of fresh air. It's all about the music for them and it's kind of nice that way. You get the music without the overboard narcissism.
I hope Stevie is on the new Fleetwood Mac album; but I'd also find it really interesting if she wasn't.

It would be very interesting to have and I would certainly enjoy reading the critics' take on that album too. I know it would not sell well.

It's important to remember that if they did record without Stevie, there's no reason it would have to be the last FM album. In fact, recording without her would probably ensure it would not be their last. Just as they all say they didn't want to leave FM with Mirage being the final word from the band, none of them would want to leave the band with a Stevie-less FM album as their sign-off. So, they could record without Stevie in 2015, if she's not ready to participate and then convene for a "final" album with her in 2017.

But if Stevie is willing to do one last "5 Fireflies" album to cap their legacy, why would it not be this one?

Nobody said anything about doing an album without her against her will. If she is willing to do it she should and will do it. People are just saying if she's not willing then a Stevie-less album, which likely wouldn't happen anyway, wouldn't be such a bad thing. She's held off a FM album for far too long except before she was half of songwriting. Now she's a third.

I bet Stevie is OK in principle with making a new album with GFM. No doubt She and her team are putting pressure on the band, slowing things down a lot. She probably wants control over things like production and her cut of the profits etc. which take a long time to negotiate.

Yep. Everyone wants an album with all 5 of them, but if that can't be done in 2015 then I would MUCH rather have an album with the four than have no album at all. The idea of waiting 4 years, if that's how long it takes for her to come around sickens me. This is not the distance between Mirage and Tango any more. This is the distance between the present and the grave or the sickbed.

They are in great shape. Even John is doing something physically that I would be hard pressed to do, for 2.5 hours a night, much less the rest of them. But we have no promise that their youthful energy will last.

They should make a target date and if she's not on board in 2015, then they should go on without her. Waiting indefinitely for her to participate is not a viable option for me, but, to my chagrin, you're right that it "likely wouldn't happen anyway." But doing an album without her isn't putting an end to anything. If everyone is still around, they can always do another one with her, after she's had a chance to take a break from FM and explore her solo oats. Then, in 2017 or so, they can do another album with her and a "farewell" tour.

Not sure what you mean. I know no one was talking about doing something against her will. I just meant that it seems like if she is willing to do another FM album at all, she doesn't benefit by having them do one without her now and one with her later. I don't. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. The truth is, when this tour is over, she probably wants to be away from FM for awhile. The last thing she will want to do is go into a studio. The idea of going into the studio after a tour is not one that has the probability of success.

It would have been better to do an album between tour segments. I think that would have made it much more likely to happen. When I saw the new leg tour dates were starting early next year it saddened me a little. I was hoping that they would start in May or something.

I totally agree. They should have resumed work on the new songs throughout the spring and then commenced a summer tour where some of those new songs could be introduced.

Whenever this tour ends (more additional dates could come...) I wonder what the next step will be and when--if ever--those new "profound" songs will ever come to light.

I think it would have been best if they had gotten basic tracks done on a bunch of songs that included Stevie through the spring of this year so they'd have the foundation of an album well underway to go back to after the tour. Something to keep the momentum going. Right now Stevie's got nothing (tangible) invested in an album, whereas Lindsey and Christine have the real meat of an album started

Yes, that might have been good to make everyone feel all in. If the band had had her demos to flesh out even, like they did in 2003, that would have been helpful. So, after the tour, they could finalize the demos and she might be inspired to give them new songs then too, like she did with SYW.

That would have been ideal.

<sigh>

Why does everything have to be so hard with this band?

Stevie is my least favorite of the songwriters, but I don't dislike her work. In fact, "Landslide" is possibly my all-time favorite FM song, and I would place "Sara" and "Gypsy" in my all-time FM top 20. I think "Thrown Down" and "Say You Will" are as good as Lindsey's songs on SYW.

So, the best option out there---assuming it's truly an option---is to have the full RUMOURS line-up on board for the reunion record. It's better for the chemistry, it's better for the marketing, it's better for sales.

But if Stevie wants the band to wait another six months or a year, or Stevie doesn't want to participate at all, then they should move forward and finish the thing without her.

So, help me out here. Didn't Stevie sort of wonder out loud about whether or not albums are still a viable product in the music industry these days? And yet, she has a new solo album out, presumably to complete her contract requirements? [Did we ever get official confirmation of that?]

The band really missed an opportunity with the current tour and the reunion media coverage. They should have completed a couple of the new songs and released, at the very least, another EP, to sell during the tour.

"Oh well," indeed.

No, in fact I don't think there's been anything suggesting that to be the case. She has said she had "free time" (while her band was in the studio) before tour rehearsals and wanted to make an album so she called up Dave Stewart and went to Nashville with her old songs. No one's ever said anything about a contractual obligation except people trying to rationalize why she was not in the studio with FM.

Actually, yes, I was correct, though I think I didn't explain myself well. When I asked about Stevie making comments about albums not being viable in the current market, I didn't mean that she made those comments regarding her most recent record. I was simply trying to confirm if she'd made those comments in the recent past.

She did, indeed, make them to Rolling Stone in Dec. 2012:

"We have two new Fleetwood Mac songs and one Buckingham-Nicks song. We have new product, but I don't know what we're going to do with them. Maybe we'll throw one of them out in January and the second one in February. The music business is very different right now. I don't understand it. I don't have Internet. I don't have a MySpace Face page. I don't have all that and I don't want it. Nobody is really interested in buying albums with 14 songs on them anymore. It breaks my heart, but that's the way it is and I have to accept that.

Maybe the thing to do is release five or six songs at some point during the year. We can record four new songs and throw them out when the tour is done. I don't really know. I'm so not a part of today's music scene. I really couldn't tell you because I just don't know."

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/q-a-stevie-nicks-and-lindsey-buckingham-reveal-lingering-tensions-in-fleetwood-mac-20121205#ixzz3HNQtlwIf

I'm not saying she's wrong. But if releasing a full-length album isn't a good idea for Fleetwood Mac, why was it okay for her as a solo artist? This is, of course, a rhetorical question. The answer is that she's Stevie Nicks, and she'll do what she wants because it's her career. Can't blame her there!

So, for the record, she recorded an album faster than she's ever done ever, of songs most fans already had, right on the heels of Christine's return, while she had a contractual obligation with WB, but is being coy about her future with the band because of drama with Lindsey Buckingham, not because she is under contract right now??? The idea that her being under contract with WB somehow seals her lips defies all logic and past history. .
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if WB told her that she had to play it coy if Fleetwood Mac wanted the opportunity to even be on the label.

Why wouldn't WB tell the rest of FM to play it coy too, if that's the case?

Mick was talking about their uncertain future with a label. He doesn't know if it will be WB or not. No conflict exists between 24K promotion and FM promotion, but if it did, I would think WB would tell Christine, Mick and Lindsey to shut their traps too, not just force Stevie into unaccustomed reticence.

Agree. And even if it did the band would know it. They're not naive. Not with all the experience they have. If they knew Stevie couldn't talk about it (which, again, defies all reason) they would give her more of a pass in interviews rather than emphasizing her lack of commitment.

I always appreciate your talent for getting to the heart of the matter in a clear, concise manner, Michele. Good on ya.

I don't really understand the notion of FM not being good for Stevie's solo career. Really, Stevie is coming across as the smartest person in the room right now. She's got a solo album out, and while the band isn't playing her new solo songs, just the very fact that they're doing the reunion tour keeps Stevie's face and name out there in the media. Many of the articles I've read make a brief mention of the solo record. Surely, she's getting at least some sort of sales bump, and she doesn't have to share a piece of the pie with the rest of the band members. She owns the whole pie.

I'm wondering if she's waiting to see whats in Mick's new book. She claims she didn't read the 1st book but someone must have informed her of the contents because she was pretty miffed by it. Also, in the IYD documentary she mentioned that she didn't like Lindsey trying to change her lyrics on SYW, although she did say she had a good experience recording the EP and Solder's Angel with him. Honestly I don't think shes knows what she wants but I do think that she needs someone to offer more constructive criticism than Dave's been able to provide on the last recordings. I think she holding out to get her way, which is to probably have Dave produce her tracks on the new recordings.

Please. No.

Lindsey or Rick Rubin.

If that's a deal-breaker for Stevie, then I'm fine with no Stevie. Hopefully, it won't come to that, though. Because the best option is for all five of them to be present.

I've thought about Rubin as a possible candidate for years. Lindsey is my first choice, but if he doesn't have the energy to fight the battles or the band insists on someone else or a co-producer, Rubin is the guy.

Honestly, I don't see it happening, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't.

Rubin already has connections to the band---Tom Petty has worked with him several times, and we all know Stevie is in Tom's corner.

Interestingly, Lindsey has most likely worked with Rubin, too, and it's again through the Petty connection. Lindsey sang some Brian Wilson-style backing vocals on Petty's "Walls (Circus)," which Rubin produced.

Rubin seems to love high-profile gigs for well-established acts that need to, for lack of a better phrase, "rediscover their roots" or re-establish their stature. He did this successfully with Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, and others.

He has a very no-nonsense style, and he encourages acts to be who they are.

It would seem to be a perfect fit. But I still don't see it happening. I don't see Lindsey giving up the chair unless it's HIS choice to do so. And if Rubin is smart, he won't get in the middle of the Mac's mess. It's like people who run for president of the US. Who would really want that job?

I think she likes Dave because he tries to keep her songs true to her demos. As a fan this is both good and bad…. I've said it before and will say it again, she desperately needs a keen editor on her music.

Dave is not that. He lets songs go on too long, too repetitively. Lindsey held her feet the fire with the lyrics and also tweaked her melodies (listen to her original demos of Silver Springs or watch him work on Angel in the Tusk doc).

Jimmy understood what fans liked in her music-- the echoey vocals, the "chanting" lines and vamps in the outros and kept those magical things in and tightened up the rest.

I find her vocals with Dave very "flat" (speaking as a non-technical listener). There's none of the depth that some reverb always gave her voice. It's too upfront and flat and frankly auto tuned or otherwise tweaked in Dave's productions. She sounds more "generic" for lack of a better word in Dave's production.

I don't know if Rick Rubin would be mindful or respectful of that traditional Stevie sound or not. I thought Dave Grohl was in his work with her on You Can't Fix This (mind you, I am NOT suggesting he work with her and the Mac). They need someone who gets what makes her "her" and not someone who wants to transform her into whatever their sound is. Unfortunately, it seems to me that over time that's what's gone wrong with LB working on her stuff-- they have diverged so much musically that he can't make her music come out the way she wants. He wants to make clever musical statements and she just wants commercial hits.

She needs an editor, badly. This is why I give Jimmy and Lindsey so much credit. They did excellent jobs doing that. The music arrangements are sometimes pretty cool with Dave, but the mix kills me with those lead vocals. uhhhh

Great post.

FM will not put out a record without Stevie while she is still a member of the band and Fleetwood Mac ( MF in particular and possibly LB not sure about JM or CM) will not do anything that will potentially put their "cash cow" touring revenue at risk ( cash over creativity ) so if FM want's a new album Stevie will get her way.

Oh wow -- am I the only one who LOVES the idea of Jeff Lynne producing FM? I'd never thought about it before, but now that you mention it, there do seem to be some sonic similarities between Lindsey's production style and Lynne's -- lots of layers, feather-beds of harmonies, etc. Of the outside producers mentioned so far in this thread, this is the only one I like the idea of!

On a different note, I've always wanted to hear Lindsey produce Elvis Costello, a pairing that seems unlikely to ever happen.

I highly doubt that. If Stevie insists on Dave producing her songs I don't believe Lindsey and Mick would stand for such a terrible producer to put his sound on an FM album. The other four members are far too talented to be charmed by that snake oil salesman. Dave sees himself as some sort of ringleader, I see him as a talentless ego maniac. Stevie may be enchanted by him but I think Lindsey is far too talented a producer to allow Dave's bubble gum crap sound to cross his threshold. Even her die hard fans are complaining about the crappy production and mixing of her latest cd.

I say they shouldn't give into her. It will be interesting to see and hear the sound of just the four members. Remember Mick, Christine and John only wanted just Lindsey to join the band, Stevie just came as excess baggage. Yes, it was the most amazing lineup and yes they all got very rich from it....but they have come a long way since then and have made enough money that they can tell Stevie to go pound sand.....the show can and will go on without her.

I don't know -- last year, it seemed that Lindsey was more in a we'll see if Stevie wants to do anything but I'm not pushing sort of vibe, but now that Chris is on board to do an album, and they've enjoyed working together in the studio, you've got 3 people who want to do an album (Mick, Lindsey, Chris, though Mick could flip-flop), one who'd probably be fine touring forever (John), and Stevie, who still seems to want no part of it.

I also think that this is probably a source of real tension among the band, if only because of the press that everyone is doing. And I get it -- Stevie has 100% control of the situation. And this has been the situation for FM albums going back to when she put out Bella Donna and became a huge solo star.

I don't think it would work for them to release the everyone-but-Stevie stuff if they're going to hold themselves out as a five-piece for the long, lucrative tours (that have, for the past decade, largely banked on the Stevie-Lindsey reconciliation, though the Chris comeback has changed that a bit).

That Say You Will ended up being a negative situation for Stevie, subjectively, is huge here. Did they ever say what the big sequencing fight was at the end? Clearly it was big, since she gave a lot of interviews after the fact that she was unhappy, and Lindsey alluded to it during his Under the Skin solo jaunt. I always suspected it was about Lindsey's songs ("Come" in particular), and how they were sequenced in the album. And I just think that, given that she has an outlet for her solo work, is fine with its quality, and it probably sells the same or maybe even more than a new FM album would, given her iconic status (and FM's demographic and poor album sales generally), she just can't be bothered to give up any songs for a new album.

But this band, and its politics, are a moving target, so we'll see. They will likely tour through a good part of next year, so I wouldn't expect that album anytime soon.

Great points and I believe you are correct about the sequencing fight. I don't know that it's ever been clarified. Mick mentioned it, I believe, and Lindsey definitely did. The only sort of reconciliation after that time I can remember is Stevie telling Lindsey something along the lines of she makes a better friend than an enemy or something along those lines. Anyone remember more specifically? Whatever that "talk" was, there seemed to be a bit of peace for a while. Of course any peace with those two is always tentative at best.

I'll add a couple of other thoughts. It seemed that, as of last year, Lindsey was pretty much prepared to take whatever Stevie was willing to give in terms of participation on studio efforts. He was happy with the EP, did "Without You" as her songwriting contribution, and said things to the effect that the other stuff he had done with Mick and John would find their place somewhere (and didn't seem too concerned with whether that somewhere would have a Fleetwood Mac label on it).

But, you add Chris into the mix, and it's a totally different situation, so now it's understandable that Lindsey is more keen to do a Fleetwood Mac album than last year, and now Chris and Mick agree. So, Stevie's got more pressure on her, which she resents and characterizes as "Lindsey doesn't want me to do anything but FM." I'd guess that comment probably comes out of some expression of frustration from the band and/or Lindsey that she went and did the 24 Karat Gold sessions in Nashville while Chris/Lindsey/Mick/John were in the studio. That can't have sat well with the others, regardless of what they say now.

But, at least they're getting along well enough (or making enough money) to keep touring. I think that the album may happen though, because there is a lot of momentum towards it. But I also think that Stevie will delay and possibly try to put more of her favorite demos out on another album, and give Fleetwood Mac new and/or less precious songs.

It just occurred to me that Stevie has never had a song as a FM album's opening track, and very rarely had a song in the #2 spot. Wonder if this could be a bone of contention for her?

And although I do like "Come" as a song, I have to admit that it doesn't fit at all well on SYW. And because of that, it sticks out as having been placed there very deliberately by Lindsey.

Stevie has had as many or more #2 slots than the others have. She had 2 of that eras 5 albums. Seems odd that she would have a problem not having an opener at the very same time that you realized she'd never had one. Plus she'd have to actually record something for that to be an issue anyway.

I think they're all kind of obsessed with sequencing, which seems less and less important and time goes on (certainly a lot less important now than in 2003 when SYW came out). I'd guess that having an uptempo song in the #1 position is important to them, and Stevie's songs, often, though not always, are more mid-tempo, which was probably the issue.

Well, except this has only been true during the Tusk/Bella Donna era. Bella Donna did outsell Tusk, but since then Mac albums have tended to sell more than Nicks' albums have: Trouble in Shangri-La moved nearly 700,000 while Say You Will did nearly 900,000, I believe. A Mac album has a good chance to go Gold while it's a bit of an uphill battle for Nicks to do so anymore.

I doubt it, because Nicks is usually the person who has sequenced Mac albums.

I think with SYW it boiled down to she didn't want "Come" on the album, she didn't like how Lindsey produced "Smile At You," and they had that argument over who was going to mix the album (the scene where John asks how much it will cost and Lindsey gives him an estimate and he's like "I can't afford that!" is priceless).

See above. In the case of TITN, you have Stevie on track 2, then nothing... then her last two songs nearly back to back at the end. I think the version of Tango that I made myself (which includes the B-sides + "Joan of Arc") has a much better sequence... ;)

This all amuses me because the first time we ever heard that Dave could possibly produce for Fleetwood Mac? That was Lindsey in 2009...

How far along are you in planning a new Fleetwood Mac album?

We aren't far along in any specific sense. My mantra is to work on my dynamic with Stevie. She was a little uncomfortable when we got on the road last time, for whatever reason. Part of it was that she missed Christine, part of it was that I was getting 50 percent of the face time onstage and she wasn't used to having a guy get all that space. I think it threw her context out a little. So this time around I am very much wanting to make everyone as comfortable as possible and have that be the most important thing. But we have discussed, when this tour is done, going into the studio. The only specific we know is that we are leaning toward finding an outside producer. I think it would help to have an overviewer. It was pretty hard taking the reins last time. Not so much with the music but with the band politics.

Have any producers in mind?

We had a short a list, but I have no idea. We've talked about everyone from Daniel Lanois to Dave Stewart to Rick Rubin. That pretty much runs the gamut of approaches. We have to meet with a few people and see how it feels.

I'm pretty sure it was a sequencing issue, for the most part. I seem to remember it was that she didn't want to frontload it with the dark/heavy songs according to Linds, IIRC. Whatever the case, she was not happy with the end result which occurred while Linds stayed back in LA and the band was in Hawaii.

But he sounded peeved that, while the rest of the band went to Hawaii on vacation, he had to remain behind to complete mixing and sequencing the album. "Well, somebody had to finish the record!" he said. "So that (process) went through a whole series of political spasms and not-very-pleasant phone conversations. But we got there."

Quite a blow because usually...

"I'm a master at sequencing. I'm the one who sequenced for Fleetwood Mac. I sequenced "Rumours.' Everyone loves my sequences. They're fun."

Some believe THIS refers back to it:

I hear the islands calling
I hear angry words
Fly across the ocean
Like some, sea birds
Never stopping
I feel my blood racing
Can't believe what you are saying
I used to love you so much

I read in Mick's book that Nile Rodgers was considered for the production of Tango In The Night (they got to the point of meeting with him). Nile Rodgers' name has been banded about by a few people (me included) as a potential producer of the (definitely coming out...think positive thoughts) new album. I wonder if they may consider him again given his considerable commercial success of late. I do hope so. I'm imagining a funky Fleetwood Mac album- lots of YMLF-style tunes.

I would absolutely lose.my.MIND. if they brought in Rick Rubin. They could really do something amazing with him.

Just anyone. ANYONE. But Dave Stewart. There's a reason there hasn't been the fanfare for Stevie's recent solo stuff. The music is just kind of there. Nothing really that special in terms of production/ideas/etc. Stewart is just "blah" now. He's not bad. Just "blah". He doesn't transform her music the way people like Lindsey and Jimmy did.

Butch Vig would be another great choice.

So, Stevie's new Access Hollywood interview kind of confirmed what I suspected about 24KG: that it was made because she owed Warner Bros. another record and that she did it when she did and as quickly as she did because of Fleetwood Mac's schedule. That it was an album of leaked demos only strengthens my hunch that it was basically a contractual rush job she did so that she could dedicate the foreseeable future to Fleetwood Mac.

She said that she had no current plans on touring behind it, but would eventually tour it after the current Fleetwood Mac tour was over. That really doesn't say anything about Fleetwood Mac's future either way, because it's not like Fleetwood Mac hasn't worked on albums while Stevie has been on tour.

Better known as Europe and Australia, which though not yet announced, are still part of the current tour.

How long do they usually tour the world in a full blown tour? Is that going to take them a year?

These giant world tours usually last about a year and a half. For the band to hit Europe, Australia, & New Zealand they will easily tour into late 2015, possibly into early 2016.

so why did SN say she's busy with FM for the whole 2015? is it her usual confusion about the meaning of numbers, or did she finally agree to go into studio with them and work on getting that album out the second half of 2015?

I think the "with Fleetwood Mac through the rest of the year" definitely means joining them for the album. Plus McVie said recently that they plan to have the album out prior to starting a Mac tour in Europe, which she thought would be starting 2016.

nope, Christine said that UK/Europe tour would start in May 2015, and they were hoping to have the album out before that. obviously the album part is not happening in that timeframe, considering they have only 3 week Christmas break, and Stevie hasn't contributed so far.

i do hope you are right about the album and Stevie finally deciding to join in, but i suspect they'll just be finishing the world tour through the end of 2015. if SN adds her contributions to that FM album, maybe it could be during the summer break that they usually seem to take from touring... that is if we take the FM timeframe from things that both LB and SN said about possibly going back to their respective solo stuff in 2016.

don't know whether that's been reported here, but Mick said at DC m&g that they might just put that album out as LB solo album. of course, considering Say You Will didn't come out as LB solo album and had just 4 out of Rumours 5 members, why would this next one with 4 out of 5 Rumours era FM members be LB solo album is completely beyond any logic and reason.

Well you're right it doesn't make sense to put it out as a LB solo album because it involves Christine. But I can see why they couldn't put out a FM album without Stevie. The difference between SYW and the situation now is that Christine had quit. She was not part of the band. Stevie is part of the band so that complicates things. They do all have a personal and working relationship with her and I don't think they wish to throw that away so they aren't going to kick her out or use her as a touring only member. And if they did go to that length to put this music out it would amazing that Stevie was let them do it and not feel any guilt about holding back the band.

maybe Richard is right that this is their last tour, and they are definitely making gazillions, so commercial part will not be important anymore?

Beach Boys did just one tour with the whole old lineup back, and then they all fractured back to their merry ways.... it is conceivable band like FM can do that too.

obviously, SN has been stalling any artistic aspirations these people still seem to have and are eager to pursue together as a band. so it's weighing commercial vs artistic and what is more important to FM as a band.

but you are right re Mick, other 3 would be fine i'm sure, but Mick seems to always live way beyond his means.

Well, she's using what little time she has with the press to promote the album she's not touring behind. Remember, 24KG completed her obligation to Warner Bros, and I'd be willing to bet there's a little politicking going on. No need to unnecessarily alienate the label, especially since the band might want to re-sign with them.

Just put it out as a Lindsey and Christine album, featuring John and Mick. Sorry, Stevie.

It would seem if it were to be released as an LB solo album it would not contain Christine-penned songs (unless everything they did is a cowrite-- but all interviews said she wrote plenty of her own stuff and sent him demos to work on-- that would make him arranger/producer but her the writer) which is a shame-- her material should see the light of day and whatever format they appear in should have her name attached and not be buried on an LB album under his name (FM presumes all of the writers and doesn't highlight any writer's name on the cover so that's fair). Again I don't mean her actual co-writes with LB (if she's ok with being a featured player on a Lindsey headlined album for their cowritten stuff, so be it) but rather her own stuff she brought in for FM.

It sounds in any case like they don't want to wait on Stevie to tack her sh*t on and drag this all out forever. I love that they are considering putting out a de facto FM album without her. Calling it a LB album or a Travelling Dingleberries album or whatever avoids the legal sh*tstorm of putting out an official FM album w/out her while actually putting out an FM album w/out her. I say bravo to them!

Or, just call it Fleetwood Mac. They've already done two with three out of four members, why not one more?

But Stevie's really not holding them back right now. They're playing a political game so that they don't burn their bridges with the record label the band has been on since 1970. Lindsey and Christine have both said Stevie's on board for the next record, it's only Mick and Stevie that haven't gone quite that far. Do the math. Stevie is the only one promoting a solo record while not touring it, and has even said that she owed the label a record.

I mean, it doesn't take a lot of brains to figure out a Fleetwood Mac album with all five members of the classic lineup will certainly do better than anything anyone of them could do outside of Fleetwood Mac. Even if it was just to further her solo career, Stevie would do whatever it took to be a part of a new Fleetwood Mac album if Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham were in the band.

it's a nice conjecture and i respect your expertise in the industry, but these people are... well, weird. rime or reason may not actually apply to them. and i hope they are not courting WB for this album. if they want to be on the big label cause they are too lazy to hire the right people to promote them if indie, then at least go court Interscope or something!

Exactly. Warner is big but they seem to be horrible with promotion (at least with Fleetwood Mac).

The same way I figured out 24KG was a contractual rush job done to enable Stevie to dedicate the foreseeable future to Fleetwood Mac. Just a basic understanding of industry politics.

as I said, I believe there would be business/legal complications. If Stevie says I didn't quit FM, but they've released an album without me there could be problems. I am sure there are contracts in place that define what/who "Fleetwood Mac" means unless otherwise agreed to by the parties involved.

I'm not talking about how can they put out an album to sell the most copies. That's a bit of a moot point these days.

I'm saying that if this group of people minus Stevie has a collection of music that they would like to put out as the next (possibly final) collection for people to hear for ARTISTIC reasons, not especially sales, then they should do it. Call it whatever.

I still believe the producer issue is the sticking point for Stevie, followed by time that she wants to spend on solo stuff. She wants to do her alternating back-and-forth between careers thing. Understandable. But time is running out. She's made it clear she's likely NOT going to do the Goldfish & Ladybug project, doubtful on the Rhiannon project, or the memoir in the next five or ten years. She's mentioned a SFV vol 2…well, how long did it take her to do Vol 1? So realistically, how long would it take her to do Vol 2? A couple months? 6 months? In any case it won't eat up an amount of time that precludes a Mac album.

I agree with those who say it makes absolutely zero sense that she doesn't at least say "Fleetwood Mac still has some chapters to be written" or "This band's not over yet, we may surprise you with more new music" or something that doesn't pin her to a timeframe but does indicate she is indeed onboard.

But like others have said, this band is special. Bless their hearts. :p

I don't think that's true at all. Considering musically she has very little to do with the other two songwriters songs I think they would carry on without her if she decide she wanted to focus on her solo career instead of continue with the band. Christine's all in now she's not going to quit and I don't see Lindsey quitting either. I don't think she would ever quit though even if she wanted to.

I think she's the only one who's said something to the effect of "I hope this tour goes on forever". The others have all expressed a strong desire to make an album. Well John hasn't said much of anything as usual, but he's participated in everything. I'm sure he wants an album too.

I would doubt it. There's so much interest in the tour (and many of the punters only casual Fleetwood Mac fans) that you can almost guarantee decent, if unspectacular, album sales whatever the line-up.

I think an album under a moniker such as 'The Mini-Mac' would do well simply due to the fuss it would cause. There'd be a lot of debate in the music press which would give it a high profile. You never know, if Christine and Lindsey have been able to do their magic together they could even pop out a hit song which would boost sales. If FM do ever have another hit single it will undoubtedly come from Christine.

I don't know about the Monkees, but Steve Walsh of Kansas just recently retired from the band and immediately in the band's introduction press release they brought up the possibility of new music with the new singer when they haven't released an album since 2000. Clearly Steve was holding them back in the regard. They'd even released an album about 5 years ago under a different band name even though it was essentially Kansas (the current lineup at that time) without Steve Walsh.

I would love a new Fleetwood Mac album with Lindsey and Christine, without Stevie. I think the musical partnership between Lindsey and Christine is one of the strongest elements in this band, and we haven't heard anything from this partnership in a long, long time. If Stevie isn't on the new album, it gives the Lindsey/Christine duo more space to shine.

To imply it can't be Fleetwood Mac without Stevie is just absurd. It can't be Fleetwood Mac without Mick and John; in this band, everyone else is a temp.

 you are so funny, posting this similar comment all over the place.

LB solo was playing those kind of venues his last 2 tours, so how could that be true for FM? and i can tell you, almost nobody recognizes his name. everyone has at least heard of this legendary band, Fleetwood Mac, while they may be unfamiliar with who exactly are the band members.

without Christine (and with Stevie!), just a year ago, Fleetwood Mac was playing 80% full arenas for less than $100 for floor ticket. with Christine, now, they are playing sold-out arenas, same ones as last year, for more than $200 for floor ticket. do the math.

without Stevie, FM would be less commercial, but less stuck in a rut and far more prolific, as their recent recording sessions make it quite clear.

i expect that most people on these boards are huge fans, who care about output and having new music and seeing [different] live shows more than about whether these multimillionaires will make a bit more money.

It seems Stevie is not co-operating. What exactly is the reason for this? She is so happy Christine is back and yet she doesn't seem to want to have a long term commitment to Fleetwood Mac as a productive band.
Things don't seem good between her and Lindsey at the moment. Has she now just reached the point where she genuinely hates being with Lindsey and just doesn't want to work with him? Does she just not want to be committed to a band anymore? Has she just lost all confidence in her songwriting ability? Does she just want to focus on her legacy as a solo artist?

There are two reasons why musicians do solo work; either because their ego leads them to want to be a big star in their own right, or secondly for artistic reasons. Undoubtedly Stevie originally went solo for artistic reasons as she didn't get the album space for her huge creative output. At some point that became more of an ego thing. Surely as far as ego is concerned an individual would feel better playing huge arenas for massive ticket prices as part of one of the biggest acts of all time rather than the smaller, non-sold out gigs she gets solo. With FM she is a huge star. On her own she's a star, but not really that big.

In short, where exactly are we at?

It has taken her decades to find another producer who can help her bring her solo songs to their potential. And going into the studio and making a solo album is actually an ENJOYABLE experience.

Why would she give that up? She doesn't need the money and she is running out of time. Doing a Fleetwood Mac album means doing another tour and putting off more solo work. She is tired of dropping everything for Fleetwood Mac.

She likes making albums with Dave and Waddy.

But these days, all she does is moan (okay, its not quite all she does) about making albums because nobody wants to buy them. At least with a band she only needs to give up a small number of songs rather than invest her emotional commitment to a whole album's worth of material. In terms of sales, surely she knows slightly more people will be interested in new Fleetwood Mac music than new Stevie Nicks music.

Yes, she used the break to rush out 24KG, but tour rehearsals started over 3 months ago, and the've been on tour since the end of September, and more dates keep rolling out. There's really nothing new to say about Stevie's cooperation, or lack thereof, and there won't be until the middle of next year. Excuse my soapbox, but I'm off to read the more interesting threads.

Nobody is expecting her to record while on tour. You've missed the whole point of everything if that's what you think people are complaining about.

We'll, I'd love to think that. All the messages that seem to be coming out would suggest that isn't the case. Without coming out and directly saying so, Mick and Lindsey are intimidating Steve's not on board. If she was then I don't see why she wouldn't just tell them- they are band mates after all.

Seems like a strange tour at the moment- an odd atmosphere

As I've said, she probably has every intention of recording with the band, but can't say anything, not even to them, until she has finished working 24KG. If Stevie doesn't want to kill the promotion of 24KG, the last two people she would tell she was on board for a new Fleetwood Mac album would be Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham, because once they know, that's where the story goes, and any promotion for 24KG, which is already limited, goes out the window. Ultimately, that alienates the label that invested in the album, and considering that label is the one most of the catalog is on, it makes even less sense to unnecessarily burn a bridge.

And Stevie's got to be aware that Mick's been saying this for the last month. Yet, she still won't discuss an FM album. The fact that her silence on the subject has persisted since January (when Mick first said that some of them would be going into the studio, leaving fans to wonder which ones wouldn't be going into the studio) is itself news. Two months of silence may be insignificant. Ten months of it ... not so much.

Call me crazy, I'd rather have a SFV 2 rather than a Fleetwood Mac album! I have not been impressed by anything Lindsey has produced since 1987...

24k gold was 20x better than Say You Will and the EP combined because it didn't have the production that sounded stuck in the 80's. I love Lindsey to death, but I'm sick of the cheesy sounding guitars, the moaning, and the god awful whispering
I totally understand Stevie's worry of Lindsey producing because IMHO he ruined alot of good songs on SYW with awful production (although Stevie did bring some crap songs)

I swear I'm not trying to tear down his achievements, I'm just speaking truthfully

we've already had this discussion previously…. talking about doing a FM album sometime in the future is NOT going to in anyway impact her promotion for 24k or lose her sales. That's just silly.

Again, she can be imprecise about the timeline… all she has to do is say "RIght now we're on tour and I've got my solo album, so what comes after that for FM will be worked out after that"
or
"there's still more to come from this band and when we finish this tour and I do my solo thing we'll reconvene and decide our next move"

I mean how much more vague can you get than that, but yet at least acknowledge the pink elephant in the room that yes there will be SOMETHING else for FM down the line besides this tour

Well if you find calling 24K's sound very much like Bella Donna not stuck in the 80's....
Lindsey's last couple of solo albums have gotten rave reviews, even Stevie loved his last one.

Odd perspective. She's never played casinos (she did a standing show in Vegas like Elton John and Celine Dion have...that's not the same thing). Her least selling solo album has sold 300,000 copies. And she got great notice for her AHS appearances.

You don't like her, but that's no reason to just make stuff up.

well yeah, but how exactly is that different from ~80% of posts here?

i'm looking at the several threads about my topic of interest, like the new FM album one, why are S and L fighting one, and Stevie still not on board one, and i can just laugh. cluelessness plus self-righteousness is a potent combination. ;)

Actually I do like her (so maybe it's you making stuff up with poor assumptions.) I just think she's very full of herself at times and don't have no problem calling out any of FMAC.

Whilst driving to Palm Springs saw an ad of her concert at a local casino and hotel. Also, didn't want to see Rod Stewart with her. That's a downgrade. My point being, she's not quite the draw you think she is. I didn't see her selling out venues all across the USA.

Glad she got great reviews on AHS. I just thought she looked ridiculous. Everyone has an opinion.

Why is it 'evidently clear they are speaking nonsense'. You might not agree with a point of view but that doesnt make something nonsense.
Joining dates make no difference.
A rather unnecessary comment.
