OMG!!! One from my wishlist! And it sounds sooooooooooooo much better than Mirage and Street Angel outtakes already. Even though it's only 10 seconds long, it seems like they are focusing on her vocal and harmonies rather than a big musical production. Smart!
P.S. LOVE that picture as well!

yeah it seems like she's just keeping them close to the demos rather than trying to finish the more rocking arrangements that might have been done. Smart!

It really is a snippet. I hope we get an official video soon to boost interest. A 15 second clip isn't enough. Hopefully we'll get another one this week. Her vocal is great though. :)

It sounds beautiful. I love the guitar work.
And to those complaining it's only snippet, they can't release a bunch of singles at once. The first single (The Dealer) has been released and it needs it's time. We're lucky we're even getting snippets of anything else. Chill, people, and appreciate what we have. :)

I've just listened to the clip a couple of times on my phone at lunch, but it sounds absolutely gorgeous. If You Were My Love is far & away my fav unreleased demo, and it sounds like they got it right.

I agree, but should it take this long for The Dealer to be played on radio? It has been played once on UK radio which is terrible and I'm not sure about the US. I just want this album to be really successful and a single with an accompanying video and decent radio play is what's needed. Hopefully this will happen within the next 2 weeks or so.

well, but neither Stevie nor her team have any control over that. Radio is very corporate-controlled, playlists come from headquarters of these large chains of stations who then all play the same stuff and nothing else. So, frankly, I wouldn't hold my breath (at least in the US) that this will get much airplay because the DJs don't get any input into what they play. And the corporate types look at demographics and who "the kids" are listening to/buying. I think by now Stevie has resigned herself to this and is embracing social media finally because she's learned that that's the way to generate 'buzz' and get media coverage. But not radio airplay.

Yes, promotion wise I don't think it's helpful. I mean, people don't actually expect them to sell records, but even if the snippets are used to simply create interest, I don't think they do. In fact, my feeling is that they could decrease or dull interest when you still have almost 2 months to go until the album release.

I actually agree with the comment that the single needs its time. It does. Put the single out there and leave things alone for a month. Maybe release the official video for The Dealer, to maintain excitement. As for the other songs, they can do more teases of those when they're two weeks ahead of the release -- or not at all.

It's crucial that "Camp Stevie" realize that the days of "Radio Promotion" are dead and gone...If they want to promote Stevie they will have to do better than a 15 second clip and a few tweets here and there...Yes they are dipping their toes in the social media waters but that just will not do...Time to jump in head first and get it over with after which they will see "Social Media" isn't all that bad...

It just absolutely irks me to no end when people b*tch and moan and b*tch and moan about the lack of updates (which is understandably frustrating) but then continue to b*tch, moan and complain whenever they are finally given the updates. Some people are just never happy about anything.
And yeah, to reiterate Louie's previous post, Instagram only lets people post 15 seconds worth of video. Let's be happy that we're getting SOMETHING people! Quit complaining! Enjoy the ride! They're posting snippits to get us excited, not to sell records! They'll post longer clips on sites like Amazon for that purpose!

Well, it's not the same people complaining about the same thing. Different people have different preferences, so yes, there will always be someone who is unhappy, someone who is happy and someone who doesn't think that happiness or unhappiness should be expressed. Some people are happy about anything and everything. Some are happy about nothing and, fortunately, some opinions vary depending on the circumstance.

Sounds great! Almost Street Angel-ish, but without the tropical vibe that the SA outtake had going. It also reminds me very much of certain Bella Donna outtakes.
I am thrilled with the old photos being used for song art. I hope If You Were My Love comes with another one; if so, assuming it's going to be the one in the clip.

According to Amazon UK, the other digital downloads will be rolling out...
"Lady" on 8/25
"Starshine" on 9/16
"24 Karat Gold" on 9/23
I wonder if that's just the UK Amazon, though? Maybe the US Amazon will get the other three that were listed with running times ~ "Blue Water", "I Don't Care" and "IYWML".
Exciting times, indeed!

I don't know. You could wait to "debut" the video until late September and that could amp up interest all over again, in both the single and the album.
But if The Dealer doesn't have a video, it will be interesting to see what song captured their minds more visually and made them want to do the first official video for it.

Ultimately, I think we will have 7 downloads before the album is released:
Starshine
If You Were My Love
24 Karat Gold
Lady
I Don't Care
Blue Water
The Dealer
These are the songs with running times currently listed in iTunes. I think there will be the digital singles on the dates provided by Amazon, but I wouldn't be surprised if the others just mysteriously "became available" at some point between now and October.

No, I'm not happy with the way Stevie is promoted, but this isn't about that. This thread is about the fact that we got a new snippit today on Instagram.
Apparently, they will continue to give us snippits of each song from this new album weekly (or twice weekly if we're lucky) up until the album release. I for one am very grateful for that. They absolutely don't have to give us anything at all.
Most upcoming releases give us one single and video before release day. We've been given one single and (according to Amazon) will be getting THREE MORE digital singles before release day. How many times has that happened with a Stevie release in the past? Oh, wait! It hasn't!!! How many times in the past has Stevie given us song snippits of most (and maybe ALL in this case) of her songs before release day? What's that? Did you say none? I thought so. Right answer.
Show some gratitude!

Here's the way I'm looking at it- Stevie is a "legacy artist" who hasn't even had a Gold album in over a dozen years. It's been 2 decades since she's had a Platinum album. Now she's 66 years old and is releasing an album full of reworked unreleased songs. All of these things aren't exactly the makings of a mega success for Warner Bros. The fact we're getting Twitter updates; finally an Official Website which is updating itself; multiple goodies are being made available to fans such as a VINYL EDITION OF THE ALBUM!!! :], a choice of 2 posters, a photobook, etc; an Instagram account posting weekly snippets from the album; the track listing, album cover, and lead single were all released 2 full months before the album dropped; Dave Stewart posted clips of the recording of the songs along the way; Dave has also responded to various fan inquiries... all of these things are a pleasant surprise. I went into this album-making process with no real expectations of how it would be handled, and I'm really happy so far with what I'm seeing. Because let's face it, odds are highly against this album being a lucrative investment for Warner Bros.
I still think it's a bit early to be lodging major complaints about promotion, too. We've gotten an awful lot very quickly, and it's still 2 months before the album drops. Plenty of time for additional songs to be released, which we know is happening. Plenty of time for Stevie to be booked on various tv shows, which we know is happening (the Voice is just the start, I'm sure of it). We don't have an official music video yet, which is a bit weird... but we know one has been filmed.
I guess seeing how I've been a fan since 1993, I just have a tempered outlook on all of this. I remember the dark times before Street Angel & the Dance... and the excruciatingly long wait between the Dance & Say You Will; not to mention the full decade between Trouble In Shangri La & In Your Dreams. It's been nearly a dozen years since Say You Will. To me, this whole album announcement & roll out is happening at a breakneck speed for the Stevie/Mac world. We're being updated on the process better than we ever have. I'm a happy camper.

EXACTLY!!! It might be different in the US but it sure isn't here in the UK. Artists like Stevie are almost guaranteed a place on BBC Radio 2's playlist and yet she isn't on there yet. The Dealer was played last Thursday, the 7th, and was given a lovely introduction saying how Stevie's got a new album coming out and this is the first single and how this is the first listen of the song. The fact that the BBC totally overlooked it is a slap in the face for Stevie as without the BBC, the single won't be played AT ALL. I'm waiting until Saturday to see if The Dealer will be added then, because there's a small chance it could, and if it's not then I'm praying that the next song released will get added and played on BBC Radio 2.
Stevie needs the older generation to know about all of this because many fans of the Rumours and Bella Donna era won't be checking their Twitter accounts and refreshing their Instagram accounts every 5 minutes to get the latest info on the album. :o

This sounds beautiful! And her voice sounds great!.
Once again, as with "The Dealer", they appear to be staying true blue to her original solo demos & outtakes...stripped down! This newly recorded version sounds just like the acoustic guitar/harmony demos for IYWMY Stevie recorded 2/20/1981 (take 1, 2 & 3) from the Bella Donna Master Reels.

On occasions where I feel like covering a song for fun, with my recording software, something I will often do is load up the track in the sequencer, and then build my version up around the original track. If I'm going to play with tempo or extra instrumentation, I will do that before I add the vocals. I think that's what they did with both the The Dealer and If You Were My Love. Notice that the track lengths are within seconds of being the same length as the demo versions. I'm not saying it was recorded with software, but I bet they captured the track off of YouTube or whatever and used that as the base track before building the new recording on top of it. It makes for a very fast recording process, which probably helps. So I think she's basically "covering" her demos - for at least some of the songs. And that's great, because it means it's very likely to be very true to the demo versions. :D

Once again, as with "The Dealer", they appear to be staying true blue to her original solo demos & outtakes...stripped down!
I totally dig that aspect of both songs. The snippet we've heard of Starshine sounds to be in exactly the same vein. Other old demos which made it onto modern albums have been produced with far too heavy of a hand, in my opinion. Songs like Secret Love, Lady From The Mountain/Moonlight, even Planets Of The Universe. Not that any turned out terribly, but there was something more atmospheric about their earlier, simpler origins.

Now if they would start posting a few Polaroids from the "picture book" I might be happy...
 Did you notice this? If you save the image, you can zoom in pretty good to see some of the mock-up shots.
I got this from the Warner store site, by hovering over the preview button, then saving the preview image.

Agreed. Especially with Planets Of The Universe. I will always prefer the version on the expanded edition of Rumours over the version on TISL. I generally prefer the piano demo over the Rumours version as well.

I want my "If You Were My Love" to be a rocker, and this doesn't sound like it's that. It sounds like the Street Angel version, and I am hoping I'm wrong.
I was thinking a good approach would be to start it off as the ballad version, and morph into the upbeat Mirage version.

That could happen.
I asked Stevie at the Grammy Museum event how she decides which poems are to turn into fast songs and which to turn into more of a slower-tempo. Her answer was all of her songs/demos start out at the same "fastness/slowness" (her words), then she hands it over to a producer that slows it down, or speeds it up. Then it is presented back to her, and depending on whether she likes the tempo they came up with, they change it (or not).

I beg to differ regarding "Secret Love" - the original demo was completely perfunctory and utterly devoid of atmosphere. This track is probably the dullest demo recording of Stevie's career and yet it was transformed into a shiny pop gem for IYD, resplendent with ambience to spare. It was still an average song, but the production definitely improved it.

That raises the question...Will the singles be different from the "digital downloads" we received with the pre-order???
Well, I don't think there will be as many singles as there are digital downloads. So, like The Dealer, I think we'll get a download of the next single.
Will there be more than 2 singles?
Then, I think we are going to get some bonus songs as our remaining downloads, songs that aren't single.s

I NEED MOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR than that clip d @mmit
but plain and scaled back not too fancy
and drowning out her vocal, me like:nod:
Is this the same unreleased song from "Street Angel" ???
it was an outtake
but there's a version from like every album
it just never seemed to make the cut.

The vocal sounds great from what one can glean from a 10 second snippet.I think the more live and organic feel of this album is going to work in her favor vocally.

I've been thinking that too. I hope she records this fast on all her future projects, because then there's not much time to oversing anything.
I agree that a 'live' approach is the correct one for Stevie, but just reflect upon the recent criticism of her vocal for "The Dealer". Ultimately, most fans seem to seek perfection, particularly with studio recordings. You just can't please all the people...

I believe it was comedian, Mitch Hedberg, who said, "You just can't please some people, and last night ALL those people were at my show."
So we'll just borrow that and say, "You just can't please some people, and ALL those people are on this forum."

Loving this, but I can't help but feel that Lindsey should have been brought in on this track. I'm hoping she gets angrier/more intense as the song unfolds.
Gee, I guess I'm just hoping for 1982 huh...

it seems like she's keeping them close to her songwriting demos. Not FM or solo productions-in-process. Probably a good thing, or we wouldn't be getting them so soon.

Me too. I really like the rockin Mirage take but the haunting BD one isn't bad either. Going by the snippet, it sounds like the latter. Hopefully I'm wrong and this turns out to be a rocker or a little mix of both. I will reserve my full opinion until I hear the song in it's entirety.
On a positive note, I think her vocals are great!

Love this! Her vocals are so strong from what I can tell. I love the Mirage outtake. It sounds like she's channeling the BD demos, though, and I'm totally happy with that. Finally, she has made amends for that awful SA production. I'm particularly struck by how much better her vocals are in this (concededly very short) snippet as compared to her SA vocal.

Oh, my God! I need to go to the mental institution, or as we say here in Virginia, "the nervous hospital." I am so emotional right now about this little clip. "IYWML" has been my favorite song for years, and all I have is this sad, almost inaudible download of it that I have listened to a million times! Oh, my gosh, this made my day. It sounds beautiful. :xoxo: I'm going to cry. This will hold me over til Halloween in DC! :]

In this case, I don't think I can accurately gauge my opinion on the song based on the snippet. This is going to be one that if the sound & arrangement we're hearing in that clip is stagnant throughout the whole piece is really not going to be one I'm crazy about. I like the sound of it - but I don't think I'd like an entire song just like that. So I'll have to see how the arrangement progresses before I can pinpoint how I really feel about it.

I'm looking forward to hearing the whole song- Stevie has that sort of vibrato-tremulo-- contralto voice that makes this song sound amazing, even on just a few seconds of play. Thanks to KarmaContestant for putting up a bit of historical perspective on the song. It's great to have all of them right in a row like that.
