I know we're talking about absolutely different styles but I grew up listening to progressive rock, so I appreciate long songs. I think (the) Lady is perfect the way she/it is.

I'd be okay with Stevie Doing an Album with songs all comparable to that of a Rush Album. A Ten minute Stevie Suite would be okay in my book.

Disagree. The length sometimes makes the song truly epic. Annabel Lee's coda is my favorite part of the song. Moonlight is about perfect. I also love the long versions of Gypsy and Planets Of The Universe.

Nope. You are just wrong. Almost half of the songs on IYD were too long. Annabel Lee was no more epic than this song. Lady is more meaningful however and sinks in a little deeper.

it's not the length, unto itself, that is the problem, it's what she does with all of that time. She doesn't add any new nuance to the story, she just repeats the same material (which is great the first 3 or 4 times) another 2 or 3 times which doesn't add any new color to it. Just have a couple fewer repetitions at the end, (taking about a minute or so from the part starting around 3:10 or so where you *think* its over) do the big build up and let it have the same smashing ending.

See, I think "Without You" is too long by about half a minute, because all Stevie & Lindsey are doing is "oohing," "ahhing" and "yeahing." But, to me, "Lady" offers something essential in its final two minutes. While she may simply be repeating lyrics that had already come before, her voice is saying so much more. At least to my ears.

I do agree, however, that it needs to be shortened if they're hoping for any radio play.

I think those oohs, ahhs and yeahs are better than the sung verses, so I definitely don't think those need to be cut.

CHILL, Jondalar! It has nothing to do with right or wrong and EVERYTHING to do with personal tastes and opinions.

I agree that A LOT of Stevie's tunes are way too long. I'm right there with you on "Annabelle Lee" - it does just go on forever and ever...the "my life, my life...I lie down" part. It's like SHUT UP already, Stevie! LOL

However I LOVE the extended "Planets" and "Gypsy". Are they long? Yep. Are they TOO long? Nope. Just my own personal opinion.

The lyrics are a bit repetitive, but I think it works, because there are different nuances each time she sings them.
Maybe it's rather the fact that most of you listened to nothing but that song during the last days. :D

I agree that where you have a different nuance when you sing it, it is not monotonous, which is what I always say about Hold Me. But in the case of Lady, I think the point was that the repeated end is no different than the one before the break.

I was thinking of the oohs and aahs in Without Love and they add variation and interest in much the same way that I thought the vocal break down in the live version of Destiny Rules did. This (mercifully) broke the monotony, but I'm afraid in both instances it came too late in the songs to completely salvage them.

That's my favorite part of the song because it was the only new part added from the original. This was a song that was just begging for an updated sound and usually I don't like when demos get re worked but this new version sounds too much like the demo.

Did you order yours from the Australian store? I was overseas when the pre-orders started, so I only ordered mine last week. (And to tell you the truth, I'm not really sure what I've ordered but I knew damn well I wanted it!) Initially I didn't think I was getting any digital downloads with mine, and then The Dealer appeared in my inbox this morning, but still no Lady. I also don't seem to have an account with the store, even though I thought I did. So confused.

No. I ordered from the US site.
If you got to the WB and go to make an account
just make it with the same email you purchased with
and it will list all your previous/pending orders

Well actually the end of Lady is a bit different she sings"Maybe you don't need to see" instead of "Lady you don't need to see"

That's exactly how I think about it. The song builds up perfectly towards the end. It gets more emotional with every note.

It may be too long for radio play, but I must admit, I don't care about radio at all. Probably it won't get much airplay anyway, short or long.

Neither Lady and Without You are made for radio. They are too good of songs sung by people who are brilliant singing artists. The radio largely plays crap, **** that makes your ears bleed. It's sad, really.

Agreed. I barely listen to the radio these past couple of years because of that reason. Even the worst songs of our favorite artists are better than 98% of the music that is out there these days. IMO.

I don't think Lady is too long. It needs to build up to the end. Although I can see where people are coming from about the repetitive lyrics.
Is it just me or did anyone else wish she got even louder and maybe almost scream the words at the end of the song? Drive it into epicness!

Without You was terribly, terribly produced. It sounded weird - that's the only word for it. The so g itself wasn't bad; I thought it was quite nice live, and I love the demo. But he final version was awful. I don't know what the deal was with it.

Lady is long and repetitive but it's all so pleasant that I can't find it in myself to mind. It could be shorter, yes, but I don't really notice it being long because it's nice to listen to.

I can see why some people find it too long and maybe repetitive. Personally I think it's the perfect length, the extra verse accentuates it's beauty :) I think if you really like the song, you're happy for it to go on and on and on... ;)

And I'm also not bothered about whether it's right for the radio, it's in a different league from most of the crap they play.

I agree with you completely about the EP version of Without You.could not even get through it once. but I don't think I could describe Lady as pleasant IMO it is more harrowing and gut wrenching a listen and really one of the most despondent things she has ever written.

I don't feel it as "harrowing and gut wrenching", but I have found after a few more listens, that I don't necessarily want to listen to it more than once at a time. It seems to suck the energy out of me. Someone said earlier that it made them feel like being quiet. I think it does that to me as well. (Not to take anything away from the fact that it is pretty, just wistful and lonely as well)

I'm not grumpy, I'm happy to have this music, I think "Lady" is at least a minute too long and overly repetitive and would be more effective condensed, my production opinions tend to be atypical (e.g. I love OSOTM: production, vocals, lyrics, wardrobe, etc.), and I enjoy the music but am happy to share my opinion (and enjoy reading opposing opinions) whether I enjoy the music or not. I'm inclined to politely agree or disagree; like or dislike and state any or all or none of the above. In my opinion that's the essence and the beauty of The Ledge, but again, that's just my opinion. Thanks for sharing and letting me share;)! Ricoh

Lame! I wish she'd just do new interviews (at the very least, via phone) and expound a little bit more on this project. I think Rolling Stone is the first time we've heard anything else other than the..."demos taken from my home", "fastest I've ever recorded", "these songs are for you" statements that EVERY media outlet has repeated and rehashed these past three months.

I'm chomping at the bit to hear more details. Why she picked these certain songs, why she wanted to record just old demos instead of new stuff, and I wanna hear a little more about each song.

We're a little over a month out from this album dropping. At this stage in the game, a month before IYD dropped, we'd read so many news articles about the project. Even if a lot of her statements were a little repetitive (the "Lennon/McCartney" writing team comparisons) we still had learned a lot more info about the songs, the recording process, the videos, the documentary and much more.

Stevie Nicks — “Lady”

Stevie Nicks’ forthcoming album, 24 Karat Gold (out Oct. 7), had her mining the past and recording songs she wrote decades ago. Simple, stripped-down piano ballad “Lady” sounds more like Nicks’ pre-Fleetwood Mac days than her recent albums, which is exactly what it is; the song previously surfaced as a Buckingham Nicks demo called “Knocking on Doors.” Listening to “Lady” and “Knocking on Doors” back-to-back points out the ways in which Nicks’ voice has matured: both are beautiful, but when the husky-voiced Stevie circa 2014 wonders aloud “what is to become of me,” it feels like wisdom instead of childish pitying.

'Lady" is the most underwhelming, creative-free , nonsensically lame title for the song. "Lady" has no legs; a crappy monosyllabic word referenced in the verse, with more association with a popular Kenny Rogers song.

99.9% of people would listen to the chorus and assume that "'Knocking on Doors" is the title. And rightfully so, since that is the essential concept of the song.

I don't know how this demo escaped me for so many years, as I first sought it out when Lady was listed as one of the tracks for 24 Karat and fans thought it might be "Knocking on Doors." Fell in love with the demo from the start, and the released version only deepened my love for "Lady." I love, and mean LOVE, that it is just Stevie's sad voice singing about her fear of loneliness and the subtle, but haunting piano... It's just what I want from a Stevie Nick's song.

"..the sun keeps throwing out the light from the clouds, but there's no light in here.."

"..I'm tired of knocking on doors when there's nobody there..."

I like the song overall. I find the lack of background besides a piano, and the lack of any backup vocals gets a bit tiresome, though, and it makes Stevie sound like she is shouting as the song progresses. The drama cannot sustain itself with just the loud vocals. I wish someone had been there to coach her to nuance and soften the vocals a bit rather than relying on volume alone.

I am the only creature in the universe who feels this way.

No, you're not the only creature in the universe who feels this way. Though I love the song and her overall performance, I do think that Stevie sounds a bit harsh and loud toward the end, as if she's shouting rather than singing. A more nuanced approach would have been more emotional, I think.....But that's just me.

Stevie Nicks Debuts New Single; ‘Lady’ Goes Viral On YouTube

Social Buzz

On August 25 singer Stevie Nicks debuts her new song ‘Lady’ and that song is now a viral hit on YouTube. The track, the second from her new album 24 Karat Gold: Songs form the Vault, has received more than 119,000 views on YouTube. The new single has already racked up more than 1,220 upvotes from fans eager to hear more from the famed Fleetwood Mac singer.

24 Karat Gold will debut on October 7, 2014, and if this first song is any indication, Nicks is on her way to another hit record. The album unearths old demos and several unreleased tracks from Nicks’ personal collection. ‘Lady’ follows the more mid-tempo track titled, ‘The Dealer.’

If ‘Lady’ seems familiar, that’s because it is actually an updated version of the track ‘Knockin’ On Doors.’ The original track featured Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. In the song Nicks sings about growing older, while questioning her fate. At one point she laments, “I know that things gotta change/But how to change them, isn’t clear.”

The album will be released by Warner Bros. with a limited-edition double LP dropping on September 29.

So maybe instead of a cleaning lady...Stevie was worried about being a sales person? I mean "Knocking on Doors" COULD be about Stevie going door to door selling something...when she's not in the office making sales calls, as in "Dial The Number"!

yes, she's a little loud but you can't deny the passion in her singing, especially the last three lines..the "maybe you don't need to see..." end when she holds that last note...it just goes right through me.

No, I agree.

But then I think it's honestly more of a range issue than anything - I don't think Stevie has much of a head voice anymore [ or she's not very comfortable using/controlling it ] so she has to power through her chest to hit the high notes. You can't sing those high notes in your chest without a bit of a push. If she wanted to float them, they'd have to be head-y...and she's very seldom gone that route in the past 15+ years.

I think Lady is the most beautiful recording of Stevie since 1984. Even the production couldn't ruin this. It's beautiful.

Who could be the 'he' in this lyric?

Yes thank you Suite Shangrila.

It is a cool picture. The hair mussing is sexy.

Yes the vocals have changed since the vocal coach came along. She now enunciates clearly, and tries to sing from the chest. But it takes away from the songs sometimes. I remember how horrified at what happened to "Storms" on the Unleashed tour, for example. Instead of the melancholy whisper it became a monotone blare. I find the current voice is hard sometimes to take, especially in mid and uptempo numbers, unless embellished in some way by clever arrangements or richer production. On ballads it mostly still works.

Lady is just too long. Most of the shouting occurs in the final minutes of the song.

Her voice now a perfectly ruined rasp. I like that.

I love that too. Reminds me of a reviewer of TISL referring to her vocal on Love Is as "scorched by the desert sun and full of tragic beauty."

I'm guessing it's also from Entertainment Weekly.

No, that's from the Rolling Stone article.
